DRAFT Program(me) for IR13.0
by Alexander Halavais 01 Sep '12

01 Sep '12

Hello, A number of folks have inquired about the program for IR13.0, mostly asking where it is. Although it was mentioned in an email to authors, a draft version of the program can be found here: http://bit.ly/ir13program I will reiterate that this is a *draft*. As the authors' registration deadline approaches (today in most of the world!), we will remove presentations of those who have not registered. Already, you may find your presentation has moved, as we have attempted to reduce the number of parallel panels. In general, we will try to keep your presentations close to where they have already been scheduled, but I urge you to keep in mind that this is a draft program, and subject to change. I recognize some of you are hoping to dash out for Sunday travel, and while I understand the reasoning, please be aware that we are programmed through to the beginning of Sunday evening. And at that point, there will be food and wine at the banquet. And with it, you might expect spontaneous dancing, unintended revelations, over-familiarity with newfound friends, and general carousing. Seriously, who would choose a coach seat on a transatlantic redeye over that? Best, Alex -- -- // // This email is // [x] assumed public and may be blogged / forwarded. // [ ] assumed to be private, please ask before redistributing. // // Alexander C. Halavais, ciberflâneur // http://alex.halavais.net // // Please attribute any stupid errors above to autocorrect on my phone. // (But I probably was typing on a keyboard.)

Ranking Web (Webometrics) of Universities
by Isidro F. Aguillo 31 Aug '12

31 Aug '12

It just have been published the fourteenth edition of Web Ranking Universities. The July 2012 edition includes nearly 21,000 higher education institutions worldwide, classified according to their academic and research performance, prestige and international visibility and their commitment to open access policies. Access to the Rankings portal: http://www.webometrics.info/ In this edition, some indicators have been modified to increase the Ranking utility and reflect more accurately the recent, especially the pursuit of excellence. The Ranking, published by a nonprofit research group belonging to a public academic institution, can be distinguished from other similar classifications because it is not based on prestige obtained from decades old prizes, nor it is mission or discipline biased (biomedical research at the expenses of other activities) or succumb to commercial or political interests as shown by suspicious over-representation of certain countries. The report provides the results for four indicators: Presence, which measures the volume of information published on the web; Impact, built from the links received from third parties; Openness, counting the number of documents that are freely available from scientific repositories and Excellence, which only includes the quality papers that are among the 10% most cited of each discipline. As in previous editions Harvard, MIT, Stanford and Berkeley lead the world ranking. The first non-US University is Sao Paulo (15), which thanks to its commitment to the open publication overcame Cambridge (20) that should improve its current repository. Asia is performing well, with Tokyo, National of Taiwan, Kyoto, National of Singapore and Tsinghua among the Top 100, followed closely by Shanghai Jiao Tong and Hong Kong. Besides of Cambridge, the European universities are represented in the top 50 by Oxford (25), ETH Zurich (29) and the University College of London (43). The Imperial College is still out due to its confusing web naming practices. Charles University is the only Central & Eastern European University with a rank among the top 100. The performance of Canadian (22 in the Top 500) and Australian (15 in the top 500) universities is outstanding. Only two African universities (Cape Town and Stellenbosch) appears in the top 500 Besides the Ranking of Universities the portal provides access to rankings of Research centers (8000), Hospitals (16000) Business Schools (1500) and Repositories (1600). Among the research centers, the U.S. National Institute of Health (NIH) and the NASA in that top the list Ranking of Research Centers: http://research.webometrics.info/ -- **************************** Isidro F. 30 Aug '12

UMR CNRS 6279 Joint Research Unit in Sciences and Technologies for Risk Management Université de technologie de Troyes, 12 rue Marie Curie – BP 2060 – 10 010 Troyes Cedex POST-DOCTORAL POSITION *Title: *Modelling and Simulation of Security for Mobile devices * * *Desired profile: *Doctorate in Computer Science/ Applied Mathematics *Skills: *graph theory, algorithms, mathematical modelling (probabilistic and statistical approaches, etc.),* *and information system security *Organisational assignment*: The postdoctoral fellow will work in the department HETIC (Man, Environment, Information Technology and Communications), and the CNRS Joint Research Unit in Sciences and Technologies for Risk Management (STMR). * * *Position availability*: starting in October 2012 *Type of contract*: 1 year (with renewal possible based on performance) *Type of funding*: *European Regional Development Fund* (*ERDF*), project CyNIC (Cybercrimes, Nomadism and eConomic Intelligence) *Monthly salary*: €2,190 gross * * *Context*: Security for Mobile devices For several years now, the use of mobile information devices has increased on a major scale at both the corporate and private level. The problem of information system security is a renewed concern. In fact, information system security has long been based on a perimeter defence, focused on a defined and controlled geographic area for a given information system. However, with the massive advent of mobile devices and systems (portable computers, mobile phones, smart phones, wireless networks and forthcoming broadband service for mobile devices), companies will see a large portion of their information system operations going beyond their physical borders. This loss of data perimeter control, combined with the massive advent of outsourcing systems such as cloud computing, virtualisation or green IT, is forcing us to rethink security as it is today. The CyNIC project funded by the Champagne-Ardenne region and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) aims to provide innovative solutions to the problem of mobile devices security, and specifically for the new generation of mobile phones named smart phones. The topics for research involve preventing data leaks in the context of mobility, the design of monitoring and diagnostic applications and software. *Job responsibilities: * - Security for mobile terminals - State of the art for methods (statistics, fudging, probabilistic, etc.) to detect the hacking of mobile terminals - Modelling of the interactions between the on-board applications and the terminal, and between the applications themselves - Proposal of an approach to hacking detection - Tests and validations The approach to be proposed as part of this post-doc position will be integrated into an auditing and diagnostic application for mobile equipment systems. * * *Other tasks depending on experience:* - Participation in related research projects. *Contact: * * * Please send your application (detailed research CV and cover letter) by e-mail to: marc.lemercier(a)utt.fr <file://server2008/comun/TRAD/O-Z/Univtet/40271/Traduccio/marc.lemercier@utt.fr%20>and to rida.khatoun(a)utt.fr <file://server2008/comun/TRAD/O-Z/Univtet/40271/Traduccio/rida.khatoun@utt.fr%20> Interviews may be conducted via Skype or in person. Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled. For any information, please contact these address. Université de technologie de Troyes, 12 rue Marie Curie – BP 2060 – 10 010 Troyes Cedex

Earlybird deadline for IR13.0
by Alexander Halavais 30 Aug '12

30 Aug '12

Hello, AoIR members, past members, and members yet to join! Some of you have already heard from me through another email, but just wanted to remind you that the deadline for IR13.0 earlybird registration--September 1--is fast approaching. For those of you who share my academic schedule, and are in the midst of early semester tribulations, it can easily sneak up on you. This is particularly important, of course, for those of you who are presenting papers or on panels in Salford, as we need to see you registered to finalize the program. But it is also important for those of you who will be participating in the conference without delivering a talk, panel, or roundtable, and want to pay the lower earlybird rate. Way back in the wayback days of IR, we had a roommate finder on the wiki. Just in case, I've started blank pages for those in search of roommates or with hotel rooms they are looking to share. Also did the same for pub/restaurant/etc meetups: http://wiki.aoir.org/page/IR13.0_Roommate_Finder http://wiki.aoir.org/page/IR13.0_Pub_Finder If you *don't* have hotel reservations, I strongly recommend you get them, I've heard that space is becoming a premium. Best, Alex -- -- // // This email is // [x] assumed public and may be blogged / forwarded. // [ ] assumed to be private, please ask before redistributing. // // Alexander C. Research on Saatchi online
by Mirko Tobias Schaefer 29 Aug '12

Hi all, I was wondering whether you are familiar with any research on the art online platform 'Saatchi online'. I am particularly interested in research that focuses on the economic side of the platform, but I would be also very happy to learn more about media practices, interface design, terms of use, practises, etc. Our data base at Utrecht University did not retrieve a single entry, maybe you can help. Much appreciated, mirko Mirko Tobias Schäfer | Assistant Professor for New Media & Digital Culture | Department for Media and Culture Studies | Faculty of Humanities | Utrecht University | MCW | Muntstraat 2a | 3512 EV Utrecht | T: +31-644620751 | M: m.t.schaefer(a)uu.nl | W: www.mtschaefer.net

According to the manual it would only appear as an in text citation, not in the references. It says you would show the first two initials of the correspondent, the words "personal communication" and as exact a date as possible. The example they give looks something like this: (T.K. Lutes personal communication, August 28, 2012) . If you reference the name in the author in the text, you can just parenthetically cite that it's personal correspondence and give the date. If it's a public tweet, I would just cite it like any other blog post. I hope this is helpful for you.
