Sloan Foundation The Oxford Internet Institute at the University of Oxford is looking for a full-time Researcher to work on the newly funded project, "Accessing and Using Big Data to Advance Social Science Knowledge". The project will use mixed methods to follow 'big data' from its public and private origins through open and closed pathways into the social sciences, and document and shape the ways they are being accessed and used to create new knowledge about the social world and the behaviour of human beings. This will be done primarily through five case studies, interviews of approximately 125 participants, and observations of data scientists in their workplaces. Applicants should hold a PhD in information science, sociology, anthropology, political science, internet studies, or related disciplines, have a strong interest in the social aspects of online technologies and proven experience in qualitative and quantitative research. CALL FOR PAPERS / Call for Mobile Films 2nd International Mobile Creativity and Mobile Innovation Symposium #MINA2012 Mobile Innovation Network Aotearoa 23rd -25th November 2012 Massey University, Wellington, NZ As part of the BLOW Festival 2012, the MINA symposium will take place in the College of Creative Art’s magnificent new Te Ara Hihiko building. MINA [www.mina.pro] is an international network that promotes cultural and research activities to expand the emerging possibilities of mobile media. MINA aims to explore the opportunities for interaction between people, content and the creative industry within the context of Aotearoa/New Zealand and internationally. The symposium will provide a platform for filmmakers, artists, designers, researchers, ‘pro-d-users’ and industry professionals to debate the prospect of wireless, mobile and ubiquitous technologies in art and design environments and the creative industries. Matt Hills has written some on the phenomena, and Lawrence B. McBride and S. Trolling is a big problem in the blogosphere, and I am interested in ways to combat it. I come from a bioinformatics background, and I have devised an experiment, based on randomized double-blind controlled trials, to test the various ways to combat trolling. P {margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;} [Apologies for multiple posts] “Bio/Hardware Hacking”: a new special issue of the Journal of Peer Production is now published - http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-2/ During the past two decades, hacking has chiefly been associated with software and computers. This is changing with the surge of synthetic biology, fablabs and hackerspaces, all of which suggests the wider diffusion of hacking practices and hacker politics. Hardware development and biological science are about to be infused with the same kind of contestations and contradictions that already characterize software hacking. This is because hackers are not simply innovating new technology, but are at the same time discovering new ways of engaging with the world. The issue highlights how hacking practices are inscribed in and shaped by the cultural and political contexts in which the hackers find themselves, with implications for the ways hacker politics are framed.
