Dear all, In the spirit of the recent Arab Spring literature collection I and colleagues produced <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DU8AOlkTV6F0ZyoGcbk_060iBZG5tWKwj_n97EJ…> I was thinking I might try to pull together the many texts mentioned recently and commentary and make a public document to help other scholars and act as a convenient record. Any objections? Should it be limited to the texts or can I use some of the valuable commentary? If so would those who commented on texts wish to be identified and have their email addresses (suitably spam-protected) added? -- David Brake (@drbrake http://davidbrake.org/) Senior Lecturer, Journalism & Communications, University of Bedfordshire http://www.beds.ac.uk/departments/jc +44 (0) 1582 743028

Re: [Air-L] Wikipedia article edit history extraction tools?

Wikipedia has its own API which makes a variety of data acquisition tasks trivial once you get the hang of it. Documentation for API: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php For example, extracting the revision IDs, timestamps, users, userids, and article size (rvprop=ids|timestamp|user|userid|size) for the 500 (rvlimit=500) most recent (rvdir=older) revisions (prop=revisions) to the article "Feminism" (titles=Feminism) is: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=revisions&titles=Femini… Adding the content of each revision (rvprop=ids|timestamp|user|userid|size|content): http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=revisions&titles=Femini… This will return the content in XML, JSON, or other structured data formats which could be read into Excel, MySQL, etc. with some basic scripting using Python. The API offers a variety of other options to return data like which categories an article belongs to (prop=categories), which other articles the article links out to (prop=links), which articles editors have contributed to (list=usercontribs), and parsing prior versions of articles (action=parse) like what they previously linked to, and many other things. Analogous to the Twitter API, the Wikipedia API imposes limits on how many revisions you can return on a single call (500). Libraries like python-wikitools (http://code.google.com/p/python-wikitools/) will seamless handle making the calls so that you can get the complete history. Example Python 2.7.3 code using python-wikitools: from wikitools import wiki, api def do_complete_wikipedia_query(query_params): site = wiki.Wiki() # This defaults to en.wikipedia.org request = api.APIRequest(site, query_params) result = request.query() return result[query_params['action']] def get_article_revisions(article_name): ''' Input: article_name - A string containing the title of an article as it would appear in the URL, e.g., "Northwestern University" Output: revisions - A list of revisions for the given article, each given as a dictionary. This will include all properties as described by revision_properties, and will also include the title and id of the source article. ''' revisions = [] try: result = do_complete_wikipedia_query({'titles': article_name, 'prop': 'revisions', 'rvprop': 'ids|timestamp|user|userid|size', 'rvlimit': '500', 'rvdir': 'newer', 'action':'query'} ) if result and 'pages' in result.keys(): page_number = result['pages'].keys()[0] r = result['pages'][page_number]['revisions'] r = sorted(r, key=lambda revision: revision['timestamp']) for revision in r: revision['pageid'] = page_number revision['title'] = article_name # Sometimes the size key is not present, so we'll set it to 0 in those cases revision['size'] = revision.get('size', 0) revisions.append(revision) print u"{0} revisions found in {1}".format(len(revisions),article_name) except api.APIError: print u"{0} does not exist".format(article_title) pass return revisions feminism_revisions = get_article_revisions('Feminism") On Wed, Aug 15, 2012 at 3:00 PM, <air-l-request(a)listserv.aoir.org> wrote: > > Message: 1 > Date: Tue, 14 Aug 2012 15:38:53 -0700 > From: Monika Sengul-Jones <jones.monika(a)gmail.com> > To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org > Subject: [Air-L] Wikipedia article edit history extraction tools? > Message-ID: > <CAD_EfP+5jdaG8MDPfGMSwMO= > vCifMU_bR8+7MPvDUF5Yb2AVyQ(a)mail.gmail.com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 > > Hello Air-L list: > > This summer I'm doing research on Wikipedia entries in the field of Science > and Technology Studies. Internet, Mobile Media, and Journalism: Technologies of News in the 21st Century, AoIR pre-conference
by Holly Kruse 17 Aug '12

17 Aug '12

A reminder that the deadline for submissions to the Internet, Mobile Media, and Journalism: Technologies of News in the 21st Century pre-conference workshop/seminar is Monday, August 27th (the deadline was extended). The pre-conference will take place on Thursday, October 18th. Thanks, Holly ---- http://ir13.aoir.org/2012/07/pre-conference-workshop-the-internet-mobile-me… The Internet, Mobile Media, and Journalism: Technologies of News in the 21st Century Over the past several years, journalism has undergone profound changes as people seeking information increasingly turned to the internet and mobile apps for news and commentary. Some traditional news outlets, like the New York Times and the Times of London, have instituted paywalls to recoup lost sales revenue. Others, like the Christian Science Monitor, stopped publishing print editions altogether and now exist only online. Many journalists working in print media lost their jobs, while reporting done by “citizen journalists” using platforms like blogs, YouTube, and Twitter, became increasingly central to the dissemination of news. A recent poll of prominent U.S. journalists who work for traditional national news media conducted by the Atlantic and the National Journal found that a majority of these journalists believe that journalism has been hurt more than helped by Internet. Is this in fact the case? What is the state of reporting in the digital age, an age in which, for instance, bloggers writing from embattled neighborhoods in Syria give information that is picked up by mainstream news outlets whose reporters can’t reach these locations? Or, conversely, what is the state of reporting when bloggers from less “newsworthy” locations, like inner city neighborhoods, write about experiences that don’t fit traditional news narratives but now have an opportunity to at least try to broadcast their stories via the web? Questions that participants in this pre-conference seminar might address in their papers and papers-in-progress include: How have traditional news media responded to new media – for instance, by offering news on a “third screen” or entering into ventures with new media companies – and how effective have these forays been? What constitutes a citizen journalist, and what effects are citizen journalists having as sources of information for the public and for more established media outlets? How has the internet affected reporting and its practices? What is the role of the online news audience in the creation and dissemination of news when compared to the audience of print news? What effect have the internet and mobile media had on reporting on breaking news and on crisis communication? How has in-depth investigative reporting been affected by the emergence of the internet and mobile media as crucial sources of news? What opportunities has the internet afforded writers, including those in marginalized social and economic groups, that they wouldn’t have had in traditional media? How have print and broadcast media covered the development of digital news media? Has the content of news changed as digital and mobile media as sources of news grown more popular? Who are the gatekeepers in the new news environment, and what role do online gatekeepers play? What are the social and cultural implications – locally, regionally, nationally, and globally – for the declining popularity of print news media and the growth of digital news media? Participants in this pre-conference seminar are invited to investigate these questions and interrogate mainstream understandings of the nature of digital and print news sources and their audiences, and the relations between and among them. This pre-conference will be a half-day seminar and workshop in which each participant will present his/her current research on a relevant topic, and each presentation will be followed by discussion. If you are interested in participating, please submit a working paper or paper proposal of approximately 200-500 words to Holly Kruse at hkruse(a)rsu.edu by August 20th. Submissions will be reviewed, and those accepted to the seminar will be notified by August 27th.

SoLAR Flare Practitioner’s Conference: Using Analytics to Create Real Solutions for Real Problems
by Akesha 17 Aug '12

17 Aug '12

SoLAR Flare Practitioner’s Conference: Using Analytics to Create Real Solutions for Real Problems Purdue University October 1-3, 2012 The challenges facing higher education in the United States and abroad are wide ranging with varying degrees of urgency. In many cases, the use of academic analytics to address some of these challenges is being considered – but generally on a small, highly-localized scale that makes them difficult to justify and continue long-term. The use of “big data” to address challenges in higher education requires ideas for collaboration, development, implementation, scaling, and promulgation. At the Society of Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR) Flare Practitioner’s Conference, you’ll have an opportunity to work with a team of faculty, staff, and administrators from various institutions on challenges to develop big ideas to be put into practice. You won’t be working with real data—instead groups will work under the assumption that access to all data is already secured. Working groups will have access to unlimited resources; however, groups may encounter restrictions during the process. The working groups will produce real solutions to real problems. This won’t be like any other conference that you have attended lately – there will be very little talking “at” you. Concurrent sessions with presenters will not be happening. Instead, you will have the opportunity to connect with colleagues and do practical work – to collaborate with faculty and staff from around the country to tackle some of higher education’s biggest challenges through the application of learning analytics. Through the working group collaborations, you will learn more about the issues and how others are looking to analytics as part of the solution. Topics for discussion may include: · Increasing success among women and minorities in STEM fields · Enhancing community college success and completion rates · Improving access and success rates for first-generation and/or low-income students · Addressing higher education pipeline issues · Developing a means for more students to graduate with a college degree · Altering the design and delivery of gateway courses · Examining the relationship between student engagement, learning outcomes, and performance · Evaluating theory-based programs designed to increase student success · Gathering appropriate data for predicting student success, retention and graduation – and developing interventions based on student success systems Each topic will be facilitated by a thought leader in higher education. Thought leaders will provide a clearly-defined challenge to be addressed by each group prior to the event. Each team will work on developing a practical solution, considering both technical and non-technical attributes, that focuses on sustainability and scalability. Further, solutions should present information to students, faculty, and administrators alike – such that each person at the institution can become instrumental and responsible for student success. The solutions will be presented in two ways: First, at the conclusion of the conference, each working group will present its solution to the larger group. Second, each group will develop a brief write-up of their solution while at the conference. These write-ups will be synthesized into a broader white paper addressing analytic solutions to challenges found in higher education. We believe that collaboration across institutional and commercial boundaries is the only way to fully address the challenges facing higher education today. We look forward to working with people with different roles and perspectives of the education sector to develop solutions for these challenges – and potentially bringing them to fruition. We hope to have you join us as well. Early Registration ends August 17! Wikipedia article edit history extraction tools?
by Monika Sengul-Jones 17 Aug '12

17 Aug '12

Hello Air-L list: This summer I'm doing research on Wikipedia entries in the field of Science and Technology Studies. A central question I'm asking is the extent to which this field, as it is now on Wikipedia, includes/features/references contributions made by women, feminist theorists, and feminist theory. To answer this, I'm gathering data on existing pages using a variety of mixed methods. I would like to ask for recommendations on tools for extracting the history of editing on a page. I want to see how many times a given article has been edited, by whom, and what types of edits and content contributions are made over time. So far, I've found the "history" tool on the Wikipedia page limited. I cannot see how many edits have been made on a particular article and understanding what kinds of edits are made (e.g. grammatical, content) requires going into each historical page view. I'd love to find a way to download the history of an article and extract the data into a spreadsheet -- perhaps this is a tall order. So far, I've found tools for extracting data on Wikipedia from the Digital Methods Initiative website (which was first introduced to me by this list serve! :)). Specifically, the program History Flow is useful to an extent for visualizing types of content contributions and edits over time. But there is no way to translate these visualizations into a spreadsheet format -- as far as I can tell -- so I've been doing that manually, somehow piecing together the history of edits on an article. Meanwhile, I was recommended a tool called WikiChecker ( http://en.wikichecker.com/article/?a=science_studies) but the summary format is limited and, at times, contradictory to data I get elsewhere. If anyone has any other tools or methods to suggest for ways to collect data on content contributions and edits on Wikipedia I would be most grateful. I'd also be happy to be in conversation with anymore interested in the concept of the project. I'm working on it as a part of the FemTechNet Initiative, spearheaded by Anne Balsamo and Alexandra Juhasz. I'm not sure if information on the initiative has circulated here, so I'll paste in a copy of the "call" which took place last spring. * http://aljean.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/femtechnet-long-form-invite-may-2… * Thank you, Monika -- Monika Sengul-Jones Graduate Student Communication & Science Studies University of California, San Diego msengul(a)ucsd.edu

Public Sphere Article?
by Adam Fish 16 Aug '12

16 Aug '12

Dear List, I am teaching an undergraduate course on media and the public sphere and looking for an article that introduces the public sphere. Habermas is too dense; Nancy Fraser probably too. The article could be an anthropological case study that frames the data in the theory of the public sphere or a more straight theoretical article. Any ideas? Thank you! CfP: Book "Social Media, Politics and the State"
by Christian Fuchs 16 Aug '12

16 Aug '12

*Call for extended abstracts for an edited collection -‐ Please circulate widely* Social Media, Politics and the State: Protest, Revolutions, Riots, Crime, and Policing in the Age of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Edited by Daniel Trottier and Christian Fuchs http://fuchs.uti.at/wp-content/CFP_SMPS.pdf “Social media” is a new buzzword, marketing ideology and sphere of imagination in which contemporary techno-optimistic and techno-pessimistic visions are played out. Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have made a considerable impact on contemporary life. A growing corpus of research considers how these platforms have affected marketing, identity construction, social coordination and privacy. The scholarship that this collected volume addresses looks at how state power and politics are both contested and exercised on social media. Because social media are saturated in contemporary life, they have become a tool and a terrain for conflicts between states and a multitude of organized and autonomous actors. Social media are celebrated for “levelling the playing field” by empowering otherwise powerless actors. The ‘Green Movement’ during the 2009 elections in Iran was globally broadcast on Twitter. Marginalized political groups can now promote their agenda on free and easy-to-use platforms. Even rioters and other actors breaking the law can organize and discuss their exploits on these platforms. Yet in practice, social media often lead to asymmetrical power relations, as a result of asymmetrical relations of online visibility. Studying social media politics, there are on the one hand techno-optimistic approaches that claim that social media helps to revive democracy (examples of such talk include the focus on “Twitter revolutions”, “YouTube democracy”, or a “Twitter public sphere”) and on the other hand techno-pessimistic approaches that claim that social media are a new threat to democracy (examples of such talk include focus on the omnipresence of criminal threats, harassments, terrorism and violent extremism on social media, the talk about “Twitter and Blackberry riots”, the stress on the end of political activism due to the lack of real-life contacts between activists and citizens, the focus on how the police and repressive regimes monitor social media in order to repress political activism, etc). The focus of this collected volume is different in that it seeks contributions that give a realistic assessment of the relationship between various forms of collective action (e.g. the Arab spring, the Occupy movement, contemporary student protests, contemporary social movements in Greece, Spain, and other countries, Anonymous, WikiLeaks, various forms of terrorism, various forms of crime, various forms of political activism, etc) and state power (the police, various political regimes, intelligence, the state-industrial surveillance complex, the neoliberal regime of governance, etc) on social media. In the Iranian protests in 2009 just like in the Arab spring, activists have used social media as organizing and communication tool in their protests and governments have tried to censor and monitor social media, often with the help of surveillance technologies produced and exported by Western companies. WikiLeaks has tried to make the power of state actors transparent with the assistance of online leaking, and political opponents of the project have answered with boycotts and large-scale campaigns. Anonymous has advanced a networked form of political hacktivism and is facing the criminalization of distributed denial of service attacks and politically motivated cracking as well as prosecution of some of its activists. Organizations concerned about police brutality, including discriminatory and racist practices have turned to social media in order to ‘watch the watchers’ (regional CopWatch branches on Facebook, leaking personal data about abusive police officers to the public, drone and citizen journalism of police activities during political protests). However, these very sites render political activists visible to the police, and the police have developed an interest in monitoring social media and using them as surveillance tools. Social media and mobile phones have been used as communication tools in the London and Vancouver riots in 2011, to which the police answered with an offensive of policing social media, developing new social media surveillance tools, and publicly declaring the need for laws and technologies that enable the control of riots, crime and terror. Since the start of the global economic crisis in 2008, Europe has experienced an electoral shift towards the right in many countries and a growth of right-wing extremism and fascist activism that has culminated in Anders Breiviks’ mass killing of 69 people. The public and the police have since asked if Internet- and social media-monitoring and control can prevent such massacres, by detecting early warning signals and help catch criminals and terrorists before they attack. Privacy and civil society activists are the same time concerned that social media policing and surveillance bring about a totalitarian society, in which innocent citizens are criminalized and discriminated against, and in which social media policing turns against civil society, minorities (especially people of colour) and political activists, that conservative law and order politics are advanced, and that a techno-deterministic ideology emerges that overlooks the societal causes of crime and terror and believes in a technological fix to societal problems that are rooted in modern society’s power structures. We are explicitly neither interested in contributions that tell readers which great opportunities or threats various forms of collective action on social media pose, nor in contributions that focus on opportunities or threats posed by various forms of state action on social media. We are rather exclusively interested in contributions that address how collective action and state power are related and conflict as two-sides of social media power, and how power and counter-power are distributed in this relationship. We are compiling a collection of research papers that address one or more of the following issues: - Social media and the Arab Spring, and related regime conflicts - Social media and the Occupy movement - Social media and student protests / austerity protests - Social media and riots / social unrest in urban areas - Social media and political protests and activism - Social media and marginal political groups - Social media, right-wing extremism, and fascism - Social media and religious violence - Social media and organized crime - Social media and policing - Social media and police violence - Social media and the state-industrial surveillance complex - Social media and Anonymous - Social media and WikiLeaks In particular, we invite research that considers a) the two-sided nature of power in relation to social media and politics, and that is b) theoretically focused, c) critical in nature and d) empirically rigorous. - All chapters should give attention to theoretical question that address what political power is all about in general and today and how this relates to social media: What is the state? What is power? What is politics? What is the police? What is surveillance? What is activism? What is civil society? How does the relationship between collective action and state power look like in modern society? - Which critical theories that conceptualize these phenomena are there? Which of these theories are feasible in the context of social media? - How can the relationship of collective action and state power be theorized and how does this relate to social media? - What does it mean to study social media, politics and the state critically? - How should the concepts of power and counter-power be theorized? How can such a theorization be applied to social media? - How can the power relations and asymmetries between collective actors and state apparatuses be conceptualized, theorized, and empirically studied in a realistic and dialectical way? Final versions of chapters should be no longer than 8000 words, including references and notes. We intend to submit a full proposal to Routledge, who have expressed an interest in this collection. We are currently seeking extended abstracts of 800-1200 words. Please send extended abstracts, along with a brief bio to daniel.trottier(a)im.uu.se no later than Monday, October 15th, 2012. Tentative schedule: Extended abstracts due: Monday, October 15th, 2012 Notification of accepted papers: Thursday, November 1st, 2012 First draft of chapters due: Monday, April 1st, 2012 Feedback on chapters returned: Monday, June 3rd, 2012 Final versions of chapters due: Monday, July 15th, 2012 In order to be considered, abstracts should adhere to the following style (800-1200 words in total, please address each aspect separately and include the specific headlines in your abstract): a) Contribution Title b) Full name of the author(s) c) Institutional affiliation(s) d) Postal address(es) e) e-mail address(es) f) Telphone number of the corresponding author Structured Abstract 1 Purpose: What are the overall task and research question the chapter addresses? 2 Scope: What is the scope of the analysis (time period for the analysis, geographical scope, which phenomena are included in the analysis, which one excluded and why, which spheres of society and their interrelations are taken into account (politics, state, economy, ideology, etc))? 3 Method: Which theoretical approaches and empirical research methods are employed for answering the research questions and attaining the chapter’s task? How does the chapter employ and apply critical social theories for studying social media, politics, the state, power and counter-power? How is the power relationship of collective actors and state power taken into account? 4 Results: What are the main results presented in the paper? 5 Recommendations: What are the main recommendations for society that the research allows to draw from a critical and ethical perspective? 6 Conclusions: What are the main conclusions of the conducted research for politics, society, academia, the research field of Critical Internet and Social Media Studies, and the public?
