Re: [Air-L] Wikipedia article edit history extraction tools?

Is is possible to get access to non-public data http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Index Marj Associate Professor Marjorie Kibby, B.Ed, M.A, Ph.D, FHERDSA Director, Student Experience FEDUA Head of Discipline: Film, Media and Cultural Studies School of Humanities and Social Science The University of Newcastle Callaghan NSW 2308 Australia Marj.Kibby(a)newcastle.edu.au +61 2 49216604 >>> Peter Timusk <ptimusk(a)sympatico.ca> 15/08/12 9:04 AM >>> Monika I am not sure how you will get the demography variables you obviously need. I use a handle to do my edits on Wikipedia. That's all you see in the edit history. Of course some like me may have a male first name in this handle or a female first name. In my legal studies BA we learned that we had to cite the first names of scholars because this allowed us to see the gender. Wikipedia do not know my gender. Unlike some paid web site that may have my credit card data and access to my gender which they could in turn share with a researcher I don't think Wikipedia have much real data about me they can share. -----Original Message----- From: air-l-bounces(a)listserv.aoir.org [mailto:air-l-bounces@listserv.aoir.org] On Behalf Of Monika Sengul-Jones Sent: August-14-12 6:39 PM To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Subject: [Air-L] Wikipedia article edit history extraction tools? Hello Air-L list: This summer I'm doing research on Wikipedia entries in the field of Science and Technology Studies. A central question I'm asking is the extent to which this field, as it is now on Wikipedia, includes/features/references contributions made by women, feminist theorists, and feminist theory. To answer this, I'm gathering data on existing pages using a variety of mixed methods. I would like to ask for recommendations on tools for extracting the history of editing on a page. I want to see how many times a given article has been edited, by whom, and what types of edits and content contributions are made over time. So far, I've found the "history" tool on the Wikipedia page limited. I cannot see how many edits have been made on a particular article and understanding what kinds of edits are made (e.g. grammatical, content) requires going into each historical page view. I'd love to find a way to download the history of an article and extract the data into a spreadsheet -- perhaps this is a tall order. So far, I've found tools for extracting data on Wikipedia from the Digital Methods Initiative website (which was first introduced to me by this list serve! :)). Specifically, the program History Flow is useful to an extent for visualizing types of content contributions and edits over time. But there is no way to translate these visualizations into a spreadsheet format -- as far as I can tell -- so I've been doing that manually, somehow piecing together the history of edits on an article. Meanwhile, I was recommended a tool called WikiChecker ( http://en.wikichecker.com/article/?a=science_studies) but the summary format is limited and, at times, contradictory to data I get elsewhere. If anyone has any other tools or methods to suggest for ways to collect data on content contributions and edits on Wikipedia I would be most grateful. I'd also be happy to be in conversation with anymore interested in the concept of the project. I'm working on it as a part of the FemTechNet Initiative, spearheaded by Anne Balsamo and Alexandra Juhasz. I'm not sure if information on the initiative has circulated here, so I'll paste in a copy of the "call" which took place last spring. * http://aljean.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/femtechnet-long-form-invite-may-20 12.pdf * Thank you, Monika -- Monika Sengul-Jones Graduate Student Communication & Science Studies University of California, San Diego msengul(a)ucsd.edu _______________________________________________ The Air-L(a)listserv.aoir.org mailing list is provided by the Association of Internet Researchers http://aoir.org Subscribe, change options or unsubscribe at: http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org Join the Association of Internet Researchers: http://www.aoir.org/ _______________________________________________ The Air-L(a)listserv.aoir.org mailing list is provided by the Association of Internet Researchers http://aoir.org Subscribe, change options or unsubscribe at: http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org Join the Association of Internet Researchers: http://www.aoir.org/

Looking for a free Wordpress site that allows template programming
by Lois Scheidt 14 Aug '12

14 Aug '12

I teach an Advanced Web Site Design course for undergraduates at the community college level. I would like to give my students some experience designing for dynamic websites but I do not have that option on the college server system. To that end I am asking if anyone on the list knows of a free online Wordpress host that allows users to design their own templates? The ones I have found only allow access to a limited family of predesigned templates and do not allow editing the templates. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Hi everyone, Thanks for the great suggestions. I am only teaching one class on piracy so I could not fit most of them in but I suspect they will come in handy for me or my students in the near future. Biella

Re: [Air-L] Air-L Digest, Vol 97, Issue 10

Hi Kevin, I'm finishing up my Master program at Rutgers University. For my capstone project I tackled markers of online identity deception by doing a content analysis of comments associated with about a dozen YouTube videos. Also, about a year ago, I did an ethnographic study of the community associated with a blog so in that case I was analyzing the content of the message boards associated with the blog. I hope you find this helpful. Our initial use case is looking for evidence of various group processes reflected in email messages of online groups (e.g., showing appreciation). However, we want to the tool to be generally useful and so are planning to extend the tool to handle other kinds of texts. We spent some time discussing what a reasonable next target would be (e.g., generic text files, web-based discussion groups, tweets), but I thought I should solicit opinions from other researchers. Hi Biella, Let me point you to the M.A. major research project of Lisa Dobbin at York University, Toronto, which focuses on the pirate parties. The project is nearing conclusion and includes a comprehensive bibliography on the topic. I don't think she's on this list, so I'm forwarding this msg to her and imagine she'll be in touch soon. Best, Martin P.S.: Do you read German? This collection just came out: http://www.transcript-verlag.de/ts2071/ts2071.php On 2012-08-12, at 12:00 AM, air-l-request(a)listserv.aoir.org wrote: > > > Message: 1 > Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2012 18:36:25 -0400 > From: Gabriella Coleman <gabriella.coleman(a)mcgill.ca> > To: <air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org> > Subject: [Air-L] Good articles on the Pirate Party and Pirate Bay > Message-ID: <50258CE9.4070604(a)mcgill.ca> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="ISO-8859-1" > > Hi all, > > Can folks recommend articles on the Pirate Party and the Pirate Bay) > they find compelling or provocative? > > Thanks, > Biella > -- > > > >

Hi Biella, You might want to also check out a book called "No Safe Harbor". It's a collection of essays that was published by the United States branch of the Pirate Party to introduce people to their platform, and to clear up the common misconception that they're a single issue party based around file sharing. You can find the book available for free under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA license at http://www.nosafeharbor.com/ Cheers, Liam *** Liam Pomfret PhD Student UQ Business School University of Queensland Brisbane QLD 4072 AUSTRALIA E: l.pomfret(a)business.uq.edu.au

tools to extract data from Facebook public pages and open groups
by Hale, Timothy M. 11 Aug '12

11 Aug '12

Hi everyone, I am looking for a tool that will extract content from Facebook public Pages and open Groups. I am not interested in collecting user profile data or conducting any type of network analysis - although tools that can collect additional data that fits my needs might work. Ideally, I am looking for a tool that can collect from specified Pages/Groups the entire set of comments and posts to the Page/Group, and if possible, "Likes" and other forms of user activity. I am considering a research project analyzing content of Pages and Groups and would like an alternative to creating PDFs and manually entering data. Thanks for your help!
