The overarching theme of the conference is "Crises, 'Creative Destruction' and the Global Power and Communication Orders". > > The conference theme engages with the concepts of crisis and "creative destruction", associated with historically-rare periods of intensified flux, change and all-round, multi-dimensional processes of innovation. > The theme invites reflections on whether or how the current deep economic/financial crisis and its attendant gales of "creative destruction" may promote deep, fundamental or multiple shifts in the geo-political and communication orders globally. Examples of specific sub-themes here include considerations of whether and how the current crisis may serve to: > > Reshape the roles, operations and key features of mediated communication, not least the enhanced role of social media forms and practices; > Amplify tendencies or shifts towards new geo-political configurations, including an expanded role for the media and cultural services in the operation of global power and hegemony; > Accelerate change in the inter-play between "new" and "mature" media institutions and their typical practices, cultural forms, and policy frameworks; > Amplify the search for new and more globally attuned theories and concepts within the expanding and rapidly diffusing field of media communication studies. > For further information on this conference theme, please see the Call for Papers at on the IAMCR 2013 conference website. > > KEY DATES: > 28 Jan. 2013: Deadline for submission of Abstracts > 28 Feb. 2013: Results of Abstract Review process > 21 March 2013: "Early Bird" Registration closes. > 15 May 2013: Closing date for Registration. > > WEBSITE: Version 1.0 of the special website for the IAMCR 2013 conference is now available at www.iamcr2013dublin.com. research of technology use among people with intellectual disabilities
by Eija Luhtasela 08 Aug '12

Hi, I have been seeking research of technology use among people with intellectual disabilities (ID). Especially those research which concern where, how much and for which purpose people with ID use computers and Interent. I have found a couple of research (Parette & VanBiervliet 1992; Wehmeyer's 1998 &1999; Carey, Friedman, Bryen 2005). I would appreciate if someone could tell me if there are another relevant research. Thanks, Eija ////

Re: [Air-L] trolls and Aspergian "sufferers"
by Stefania Muca 08 Aug '12

Hello, I haven't found the initial post so I'm not sure I understand the point of view of the one who started this topic. From previous posts, I understood that he supports Calcanis' article, which I have read and agree with. I didn't know about Calcanis before, I guess he made and said some questionable things in his life, but that shouldn't be the point. It's not like we're quoting Hitler here. As I see, some persons on Air-l found Calcanis' ideas very controversial. First of all, I didn't read it in the "he compared awful people with disabled people and that's offensive to the ones with disabilities" key. If someone has a child with Aspergers I see how sensitive this issue is, but I also think we shouldn't get our personal feelings in the way of (any kind of) research idea. And like it has been said, research is not the exclusive appanage of academia. One shouldn't look down on someone else who has an interesting hypothesis, simply because that person doesn't belong to a "select club" of university graduates. Call me ignorant, but I don't think I need to study any disabilty from a medical point of view in order to make a simple harmless comparison. My perspective on the issue is that everyone of us is somewhere on a scale from autism to "normality", so very few of us can claim to be completely non-autistic. ICTs are supposed to make us more sociable and emphatic, however its features can lead to seeing the one you discuss with online not a human being, but some sort of a game opponent who you can take down with psychological weapons. Someone pointed out that this ideas not being - yet - accepted (?) by the group, it's safer not to point it out or, god forbid, support them. That may be true in a pragmatical way, but for me it's very intriguing that someone should bring arguments like: - you're a privilegedwhite man; minorities have been discouraged to express their opinions; so didn't give me that "free speech" BS, you don't know a damn thing, boy - what you say here is very aggressive (which part, btw?!) - if I met you offline I'd show you - nobody supports you, hence - you're wrong! and you won't find a job anywhere with this attidude The list can go on with examples of classic cyberbullying which I was dissapointed to find on this list. I'm not a person who's afraid of conflicts, I might even enjoy some of them, but there are things that leave a bitter taste in my mouth. ------------------------------ Message: 5 Date: Tue, 07 Aug 2012 12:58:15 -0700 From: Michael Scarce <scarce(a)mac.com> To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Subject: [Air-L] (What have I started?) Re: trolls and Aspergian "sufferers" Message-ID: <F2BB32A7-46C7-44A7-85EB-EF099462F017(a)mac.com> Content-Type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII Hi everyone, I began the initial thread of this ongoing and surprisingly long-lived conversation. As a new member to the Association, I felt compelled to challenge statements that I found offensive, inappropriate, disrespectful, and unprofessional on the listserv. Even academic freedom has certain boundaries and constraints. It had a chilling effect on me. Rather than simply disengage and abandon the group, which seems largely self-moderated, I took a significant risk. I have not continued to weigh in since my original post, but I have carefully observed the group's dynamics, including how far and wide the discussion has traversed, individuals' highly personal and impressive disclosures in relation to their work, and passionate struggles surrounding ethical relativism and interdisciplinary pluralism. I have received many personal emails of encouragement, gratitude, organizational apology, and even outrage. The messages included far more than compassionate outreach, empathy and care-taking, however. Interestingly, I did not receive any emails of disagreement, healthy (or unhealthy) criticism, debate, and so on. This signifies something to me, which I have yet to sort out. My original post was meant to convey: "You've got to be kidding me. Suffferers? Wow. Really?" Forgoing traditional scientific use of third-person claim-staking, for me, it boils down to: * the notion that science can and should be held accountable for the ways in which it influences society (conceding an artificial distinction between the two as mutually exclusive). I was taken aback by some of the absolutist and elitist entrenchment, and most especially the cautionary tale of "Tread lightly in your disagreement with me, young Jedi. What you express could render you jobless." * certain forms of 'disability' or others forms of 'difference" as constituting cultures deserving of the kind of respect described by this organization's own Internet ethics document (even if it is ten years old) * and an awareness of how the research subjects of which we speak are also researchers themselves, as evidenced by a few members' thinly veiled descriptions of each other as trolls within a context of conducting research on trolls. I'm aware the focus of the listserv is not about organizational recruitment and retention. However, the abundance of self-irony alone is enough to keep me coming back. Specifically, what about well-written, thoughtful analysis from hackers themselves, of which there is a breadth and diversity of discourse? I understand this might fall under "non-journalistic," but I see it as being different in the sense of hackers' voices, in their own words, rather than filtered through a lens of stereotyping, sensationalism, or oversimplification. CFP: Badging and Badge Systems Development Research Competition
by Sheryl Grant 08 Aug '12

08 Aug '12

**********PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY******** A DIGITAL MEDIA AND LEARNING RESEARCH COMPETITION ON BADGING AND BADGE SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT [View the call for proposals at http://dmlcompetition.net] In March 2012, the Digital Media and Learning Competition on Badges for Lifelong Learning (supported by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) awarded 30 development grants to support the creation of digital badges and badge systems that contribute to, identify, recognize, measure, and account for new skills, competencies, knowledge, and achievements for 21st century learners wherever and whenever learning takes place. We seek research proposals that support and inform the design, development, and deployment of the digital badges and badge systems in any of these categories: 1. The Digital Media and Learning Badges for Lifelong Learning general category, which supported the development of badges and badge systems across a diverse range of content, institutions, and approaches. 2. Project Mastery awards focusing on the efficacy of badging systems for learning at Gates Foundation supported Project Mastery sites (School District of Philadelphia, Adams County School District 50, Asia Society). Project Mastery projects promote learning that is mastery based and Common Core aligned. The aim is to support new learning and knowledge, real-world outcomes like jobs, credit for new skills and achievements, and whole new ways to level up in their life and work. 3. Teacher Mastery badge projects that track and promote feedback regarding the competencies, skills programs and subjects over which teachers acquire expertise. These include systems for recognizing and rewarding some of the capacities, skills and content needed to effectively teach math, literacy, or digital literacy skills and/or to effectively teach to the Common Core State Standards. RESEARCH QUESTIONS The Badge Development Research Competition seeks empirical and theoretical research focusing on one or more of the following questions: How have ranking, badging, reputations and achievement systems been used in games, clubs, competitions, and other forms of interest-driven activities? What design principles and guidelines might we glean from past and existing cases that can inform the development of badges for learning? What role have accreditation and certificates played inside and outside of formal degree programs, including areas such as core curriculum, work skills training, arts, crafts, and other trades? More specifically, how might badging help to address some of the challenges currently facing teacher assessment and credentialing? How have learning institutions, groups, and individuals produced, utilized, and exploited various credentialing and reputation systems? How has such credentialing been changing with the shifts to a digital and networked society? How do badge creators define mastery? To what degrees are the competencies represented by the badging system and individual badges clear to the learners? In what ways is mastery assessed? Are learners given productive opportunities to demonstrate mastery (in their application, in producing and not solely consuming knowledge, and in their participating in learning and knowledge production)? How do badging systems conceptualize and operationalize learning pathways/trajectories? Do badging systems offer opportunities for learning connections and interactions with others, as well as for feedback? For leveling up along the learning trajectory? How or to what extent are novice to expert trajectories made available? How is the badging system conceiving and operationalizing validation or legitimacy of the learning taking place, and so too of the badges being issued? Proposed projects would need to consider these questions in ways that directly address the needs and concerns of the DML Badge Competition winners. The nature of the relationship to the Badge Development Competition can take a variety of forms, including: Collaborative design research with Badge Competition winners, where researchers would be involved in the prototyping, testing, and iteration of badge or badge platform development. Proposals of this nature would need to include a letter of support from the collaborating project or projects. Research with using the design, development, and deployment process of one or more of the Badge Competition winners, to examine the general effectiveness of badges and badging systems to motivate, recognize, and assess learning. This can include analysis of designs, or conducting interview or survey work with competition winners. Proposals of this nature would need to include a letter of support from the collaborating project or projects. Research that studies or synthesizes research on existing or historical badging, reputation, assessment, or credentialing system in ways that can inform the design, development, and deployment of the Digital Media and Learning Competition winners. This can include developing theoretical insights, design principles, or conceptual frameworks. View the winning projects in the Badges for Lifelong Learning Competition and Teacher Mastery and Feedback Competition. AWARDS RANGING BETWEEN $75,000 AND $250,000 WILL BE MADE. EXPECTATIONS Proposals must include an account of how your research plans to focus on, illuminate, or give context to the Badge Competition grantees (collectively or by looking at one or more of the projects) or define the larger ecosystem and the role of the Digital Media and Learning Competition within that ecosystem. Proposals choosing to focus on Project Mastery or Teacher Mastery Badge projects should pay particular attention to how the Common Core are integrated and assessed within the respective badging systems. Proposals choosing to focus on Project Mastery projects will be expected to collaborate and coordinate with related research efforts led by RAND. Access to the latter will be arranged for relevant qualifying proposals. Awarded funds may be used for salary replacement, for travel in support of data collection, for modest graduate research assistance in support of the project (no more than one-third of final budget), or for modest technological support for the project. Proposals should include in their budgets any incentives for research subjects, including Digital Media and Learning Badge Competition winners, to participate in the research design and/or research. Awarded research projects may have to complete IRB review, and if so should include in their budgets any associated costs. The grantee will also be responsible for organizing a public forum to disseminate the findings of the research. The grantee is required to produce one publication, which could be a book, a MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning Report, literature review, or white paper. Support for both the public forum and activities resulting in publication are to be included in the grant budget. Research award winners are expected to attend two meetings: Digital Media and Learning Competition workshop to be held for awardees at UC Irvine on January 24-25, 2013; The Digital Media and Learning Conference in Chicago, March 14-16, 2013. Registration and travel costs for both are to be included in the awarded budgets. Participation at the events is a requirement of the award. APPLICATION The application process occurs in two stages, requiring an initial submission of a Letter of Intent and, with authorization, a Final Application that will be submitted for judging. Letter of Intent The Letter of Intent will be used to determine whether your proposed research project meets the parameters of the call. Please include an abstract of your proposal (250 word limit) briefly explaining your choice of potential research partners (where relevant) to help us get a sense of the scope and goals of your project. If determined that your proposed research is in line with the CFP and goals of the Badge Development Research Competition, the DML Competition Team will contact your requested research partner on your behalf (where relevant). Please do not attempt to contact potential research partners on your own. Each research partner has the discretion to determine which projects they want to work with. If your project is chosen as a partner or seeks funding for research on badging and badge development systems more generally, you will be contacted to follow up and provide additional information and to complete a final application. Please note that a letter of support from your research partner (where relevant) is a requirement of the final application. Final Application If your Letter of Intent is accepted, you will be invited to submit a Final Application which must include: Proposal outline, including rationale and work plan, no more than 1500 words Public forum outline, no more than 250 words Budget and budget narrative for proposal Budget and budget narrative for public forum Letter of support from your prospective DML Competition grantee research partner (if applicable) DEADLINE Letters of Intent are now being accepted. They should be submitted in FASTAPPS by 5:00 PM PDT on August 27, 2012 for priority consideration. While Letters of Intent will continue to be accepted after the priority deadline on a rolling basis, we encourage you to submit as early as possible to allow ample time to connect with potential research partners. We can not guarantee that those applicants that submit after the August 27th priority deadline will have sufficient time to connect with and secure letters of support from potential research partners. Research applications that seek funding to pursue more theoretical projects on badging will not be required to partner with a Badge Competition project, and will not require a letter of support. After completing the Letter of Intent, applicants will receive an email with a link to the Final Application. All Final Applications are to be completed at FASTAPPS by 5:00PM PDT on October 1, 2012. Please note: you can save your application by clicking the "submit" button at the bottom of the application form. All applications can be saved and edited up until the deadline at 5:00PM on October 1, 2012. No proposals will be reviewed before this time. This Research Competition on Badging and Badge System Development is supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It is part of the larger HASTAC Competition on Digital Media and Learning supported by grants from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation as well as from the Gates Foundation to the University of California, in collaboration with Duke University and the Mozilla Foundation. The University of California Humanities Research Institute and Duke University's John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute are the principal administering bodies of the DML Competition on behalf of HASTAC. Phone Hacking Articles? (Re: Air-L Digest, Vol 97, Issue 4)

Research into Online Youth Activism
by Roy Smith 06 Aug '12

06 Aug '12

Hi there I am currently conducting a piece of research into Online Youth Activism as part of an MA in European Youth Work at the University of Bedfordshire. I am looking for help contacting 16-25 year olds who are interested in in the subject to join a research forum. Participants might just vote in polls or share articles, or they could host forums and run campaigns. It would be great if you were able to help me distribute the research link or help me find any groups or individuals who may be interested in participating. The link is: http://activistresearch.wordpress.com Here is a standard tweet that it would be great if you could share: 16-25? Interested in online activism? Help with a new research project at http://activistresearch.wordpress.com Please let me know if you are able to help Thanks Roy Smith

Re: [Air-L] Trolling and Asperger's

I tried to not say nothin...i really did. but this statement really got my goat: Re: Academia - I have known no professor to discourage pursuit of a > volatile subject, or to refuse to even listen and/or accept ideas within it > regardless of their personal agreement. This is how we cultivate talent - > how we grow. This too requires and open mind. Dear Thomas, I'm finta call a spade a spade, and point out that your above statement is emblematic of White male privilege. I can assure you - as can many of the female/queer/minority members of this list - that indeed professors DO "discourage pursuit of a volatile subject". This is especially true, but not limited to, of any research project that attempts to avoid deficit-based portrayals of non-whites/"other" and ICT usage. The innate conservatism of the academy stifles not only critical cultural projects, but also the recruitment and retention of minority faculty and students. Please argue this with me...i'm begging you. Moving on... I don't know you..and based on your interactions with others here i'm not sure i want to. That being said, you're entitled to your opinions on academia and the list. What you are NOT entitled to are your statements demeaning the intelligence, training, or ethos of other list members. If you spoke to me like that in person, i'd call you on it - which is why i'm saying something here. While you may have received approval or your actions off-list, note that no-one has stepped forward to publicly defend your words. That should signal to you that your actions fall outside the pale of civility. Even if you don't intend to enter academia after completing your degree, I'm sure that your behavior would be deemed objectionable in either the corporate, non-profit, or governmental sectors. I find it ironic that your paragraph ends with "open mind". IMO (i ain't humble) an open mind requires you to accept that the beliefs/practices of others have equal validity to yours REGARDLESS of whether you believe otherwise. I have yet to see you demonstrate that in your behavior on this forum. In the words of the sage philosopher O'Shea Jackson, "check yourself before you wreck yourself". I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors. /end rant

Deadline Extended till Sept 15, 2012: Special Issue: Culture, Technology and Globalization in the Information Age
by Harrison, Teresa M 06 Aug '12

Deadline Extended till Sept 15, 2012: Special Issue: Culture, Technology and Globalization in the Information Age Issue Editor: Shaheed Nick Mohammed, Pennsylvania State University at Altoona Culture as lived experience and academic concept exists and evolves under the pressure of global trends in the modern information age. Outdated notions of culture as a set of parochial markers of identity lose their relevance in a world where identities are not only hybrid, but also fluid and (often deliberately) constructed from multiple competing influences. Technologies of the information age enable cultures to exist outside of the confines of geography, history and politics traditionally associated with cultural emergence and maintenance. These technologies foster transnational and diasporic communities, enabling traditional migrants to reconstruct the traditions of home wherever they may wander. At the same time, these technologies also enable non-traditional groups with members of diverse geographic and historic backgrounds to evolve into their own "cultures" that feature membership, participation, mythology and lore in evolving forms. The Electronic Journal of Communication (http://www.cios.org/www/ejcmain.htm) invites papers on the multiple intersections of Culture, Technology and Globalization in the Information Age for an upcoming special themed issue to be published in early 2013. Manuscripts may take a variety of empirical or theoretical perspectives; topics may include, but are not restricted to, the following areas: virtual diasporas, identity and technology, hybridity and group/identity construction, "culture" in the Information Age, ethnogenesis and imagined communities. Regardless of the specific topic, special emphasis should be placed on fundamental social changes that arise from the increasingly important role of information technologies in defining and transforming human culture. Manuscripts should target approximately 25 pages or 7000 words in length excluding notes and references and should adhere to APA (6th ed.) guidelines. The extended deadline for receipt of manuscripts is September 15, 2012. Submit electronic articles as an attachment using doc, docx, pdf, or rtf format with all author-identifying information removed. Address all manuscripts and queries to Shaheed Nick Mohammed (snm11(a)psu.edu<mailto:snm11@psu.edu>). Authors who would like to discuss paper ideas are encouraged to contact the editor. About the Guest Editor: Shaheed Nick Mohammed earned his PhD degree from the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque. He is Associate Professor of Communication at Penn State Altoona. His research examines the various intersections of communication technology, culture and global forces. He has published in outlets such as the Journal of Health Communication, New Media and Society, the Journal of Computer Mediated Communication and the Electronic Journal of Communication. He has recently authored two new books, Communication, globalization and culture: Beyond borders and tradition (Lexington Books, 2011) and The (dis)information age: The persistence of ignorance (Peter Lang, 2012).

Re: [Air-L] Is there any published research on "trolling"?

It looks like my autocorrect got the best of my email ha! I'm didn't mean to state they are highly intelligent in their social awkwardness. I intended to communicate that they (trolls) are often highly intelligent, and often challenged by social awkwardness. I was closely identified but not diagnosed with aspergers myself, but fortunately I "grew out of it" so to speak. There isn't an exact parallel between trolls and aspergers, that isnt really my point, but rather that they share similarities for analogous purposes. About Aspergers sufferers, I dont know what your experience of individuals with aspergers is but I wouldnt say they are highly intelligent in their social awkwardness. They can be highly intelligent yes, but they are not just socially awkward, they have major difficulties with the social, which is a central part of their issue. So to compare trolls as tending to be introverted and akin to aspergers is a bit off the mark. Aspergers sufferers are not just geeky and socially awkward there are truly more complex issues at stake. I have made my suggestions to Tom in an individual email earlier, but I hope you and others dont mind my intervention. I felt I really had to point this out. It are these same people who contribute to the underlying fabric of slashdot for example, who also predominantly created Wikipedia. So, trolls do actually provide a useful purpose, dependent on how they are motivated.
