Dear Colleagues, I am currently looking for submissions for a special issue of the online journal Future Internet. This special issue of Future Internet is dedicated to exploring inequalities between groups in the digital environment. The “digital environment” here refers to the interconnected online environment, which includes all devices that allow users to go online (mobile phones, desktop computers, tablet computers, some household appliances). Inequality here refers to disparities in material access and quality of usage between groups. Papers should explore inequalities in the digital environment between economic classes, racial groups, communities, and other types of social groups and categories. Some potential topics include inequalities in: Material access to the Internet Civic and political participation in the online environment Digital literacy Social capital Telecommunications infrastructure between and within nations Social support Diversity of usage (With respect to both hardware and software) Much research has been done on the technological and economic aspects of the inequality online, but relatively less has been done on inequalities in content production. Immediate Opening for Privacy/Security Postdoc at Carnegie Mellon University

The CyLab Usable Privacy and Security Laboratory and Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University have an immediate opening for a post doctoral fellow to work on a four-year project that will have unprecedented access to and explore in-depth privacy and security-related behavior from a large panel of home computer users. This is an interdisciplinary project. It involves interacting with other faculty and students with diverse (economics, behavioral, and computer science) backgrounds. The ideal candidate would have experience doing research in usable security, security economics, behavioral decision making, or a related field. In addition, the ideal candidate should have substantial systems programming skills, including knowledge of Windows internals. Strong Java background a must. Candidates are expected to be capable of working under limited supervision and should have strong communication skills. The successful candidate is expected to publish papers in top-level journals and conferences along with other faculty and students. The postdoc will work with professors Lorrie Cranor, Nicolas Christin, Alessandro Acquisti, and Rahul Telang at Carnegie Mellon. The initial appointment is for one year with option of renewal for another one to three years. The start date is negotiable, but ideally no later than October 1, 2012. Apologies for Cross-Posting More information and submission instruction here: http://peerproduction.net/the-critical-power-of-free-software-from-intellec… Maurizio The Critical Power of Free Software: from Intellectual Property to Epistemologies? *Edited by: Maurizio Teli and Vincenzo D’Andrea * >From the perspective of social organization, Free Software can be conceived as a form of critique by adaptability and modifiability, as pointed out by anthropologist Christopher Kelty [Two Bits, 2008], standing outside institutionalized forms of power and providing working alternatives as critical tools. Starting from this kind of understanding, Free Software has been interpreted as a form of critique toward consolidated and contemporary capitalistic forms, such as the extension of Intellectual Property over any kind of common pool resources, or the forms of organization of labour of distributed developers. Nevertheless, the increasing adoption of Free Software by multi-national corporations points to increasing domestication of free software practices by contemporary global capitalism and to the expansion of hierarchical forms of social organization. This is particularly apparent in the form of the Open Source dialect, through the extensive overlapping of open source discourse with capitalistic discourses, such as that on legitimate hybrid business models, combining open source and proprietary licensing. Such perspective requires that the critical power of Free Software be brought under scrutiny, moving from the undermining of the discourses of Intellectual Property, organization of work or hierarchy, to the understanding of the epistemological implications for computer science and software engineering. From this point of view, arguments that see the epistemology of computing as the locus of production and reproduction of long-standing inequalities in power relationships, are suggesting new areas of enquiry. Is Free Software a form of critique of the epistemological basis of computing? Is it possible to connect its critique of Intellectual Property and organizational forms to the critique of software development premises as a professional and research practice? Those are the questions this special issue is trying to answer. To promote an interdisciplinary debate, we encourage submissions of theoretical and empirical papers authored both by social scientists, in a broad sense, and by computer scientists (joint papers are most welcome). It's textbook choosing season, and I hope you'll think about our Networked book. I taught nicely from the pdfs last year. And it's less than $20. Here's the jacket blurb: Daily life is connected life, its rhythms driven by endless email pings and responses, the chimes and beeps of continually arriving text messages, tweets and retweets, Facebook updates, pictures and videos to post and discuss. My talk is titled "New Media and Selfhood: Democracy 3.0 and the End of Equality?" and collects some recent work on third spaces by Stine Lomborg (Copenhagen), Maria Bakardjieva's account of "subactivism," contemporary Chinese legal developments regarding privacy, and Pak Wong's recent PhD (Twente, the Netherlands) on Confucian tradition and the Chinese Internet (among other things).
