CFP Reminder: Doctor Who Fan Phenomena (15 AUG)
by Paul Booth 30 Jul '12

30 Jul '12

Hi! Apologies for the cross-post. I just wanted to let everyone know that the deadline (15 AUG) is rapidly approaching for submitting abstracts for the Doctor Who Fan Phenomena title by Intellect Press. This series aims to explore and decode the fascination we have with what constitutes an iconic or cultish phenomenon and how a particular person, TV show or film character/film infiltrates their way into the public consciousness. The Doctor Who (Fan Phenomena) title will look at particular examples of Doctor Who fan culture and approach the subject in an accessible manner aimed at both fans and those interested in the cultural and social aspects of Doctor Who and fan culture. The editor is particularly interested in exploring the changing characteristics of Doctor Who fandom, from scholars and fans alike, over the fifty-year history of the programme. As such, we invite papers that address the nature of fandom, the unique attributes of Doctor Who fandom specifically, or the relationship between Doctor Who as a multi-generational text and its fans. Other topics could include (but are not limited to): • Fandom of specific Doctors • Changing norms of fandom • How one knows he/she is a fan • Aca-Fandom • The influence of other factors on Doctor Who fandom • Fandom of Doctor Who ancillary products, like the Big Finish audio or Virgin book titles • Specific fan practices (vidding, fanfic, cosplay, et al.) • Multi-generational fandom • Doctor Who conventions • Gender/Sexuality in Doctor Who fandom • New Who vs. Classic Who fandom • Fandom of Doctor Who DVD • Fan collecting • Learning through Doctor Who This book is aimed at both fans and those interested in the cultural and social aspects of Doctor Who. The book is intended to be entertaining, informative, and generally jargon-free (or at least jargon-lite). Abstracts should be 300 words long. Please also send a CV or resume with your abstract. Abstracts due 15 Aug 2012. Final chapters of 3000-3500 words will be due 01 Nov 2012. The final book will include ten chapters. Please direct all questions and submissions to Paul Booth, pbooth(a)depaul.edu. -- Paul Booth, PhD Assistant Professor of Media and Cinema Studies/Communication Technology College of Communication DePaul University 14 E. Open access e-book: Digital Passages. Moroccan-Dutch youths performing diaspora, gender and youth cultural identities across digital space
by Leurs, K.H.A. (Koen) 30 Jul '12

30 Jul '12

Dear AIR-L members, Apologies for my shameless self-promotion: over the last couple of years I have benefited from discussions on the mailinglist during the research for and writing of my dissertation. After defending the thesis, it has been published as an open-access e-book: Digital Passages. Moroccan-Dutch youths performing diaspora, gender and youth cultural identities across digital space The book can be downloaded in pdf form from: http://igitur-archive.library.uu.nl/dissertations/2012-0614-200543/UUindex.…<blocked::http://igitur-archive.library.uu.nl/dissertations/2012-0614-200543/UUindex.html> Summary: Digital Passages considers how the relations between gender, diaspora and youth culture are digitally articulated by Moroccan-Dutch youths between the age of 12 and 18 years old. Combining new media, gender and postcolonial theory, a transdisciplinary analysis is carried out of a young ethnic-minority population whose contribution to digital culture was undertheorized. In particular I explored how Moroccan-Dutch youths appropriate digital spaces in order to convey their belongings across multiple axes of identification such as gender, sexuality, diaspora, religion and youth-culture. The study was conducted in the context of Wired Up, a research project funded by a Utrecht University High Potential grant, bringing together humanities and social science scholars to analyze digital media use among migrant youths. Together with other Wired Up researchers, a large-scale survey was developed. 1408 students in seven secondary schools completed this survey. Furthermore, in-depth interviews were carried out with a group of 43 Moroccan-Dutch youths, 21 girls and 22 boys, between the age of 12 and 18 years old. Online, narratives were gathered through participant observation. >From the survey I learned that Moroccan-Dutch youths consider online discussion forums, instant messaging (IM), online social networking sites (SNSs) and video sharing platforms most important. These four types of digital space were analyzed on a case-study basis. Survey data showed computer ownership and Internet access is widespread among Moroccan-Dutch youths, however I revealed that digital divides go beyond ownership and access. Exploring how offline exclusionary mechanisms travel online and establish new digital divides, I unraveled how technological decisions and mainstream user preferences contribute to medium-specific spatial hierarchies. The focus was in fact on the ways in which hierarchies are subverted from below and how the medium-specificity of each of the four applications studied informs these processes differently. An inventory was made of space invader strategies Moroccan-Dutch youths employ to cope with multiple forms of inequality. With the title Digital Passages, I referred not only to their navigation across bordered digital spaces, but also capture the digitization of key identity formation processes such as voice, romance, affectivity and the negotiation of coming-of-age, gender, diaspora, generational, religious and youth cultural expectations. Rather than a straightforward continuation of migrant cultural legacies the informants are actively transforming those legacies in ways that resonate with the dominant local and global youth cultures in which they grow up. My cartography of Moroccan-Dutch youths' multi-spatial digital identity performativity provides a history of the present full of promises but also full of personal experiences of struggle. The relationship between profit-driven digital templates and user cultures and conveying belonging across multiple axes of identification remains intricate and complex. At certain points, the private/public and online/offline world overlap or augment one another and at others they collide, providing room for re-signification. The boys and girls I interviewed are confronted with various aspects of Dutch multicultural society: while they are often considered the other, in their everyday digital convivial encounters they nevertheless also establish and connect new passages between their Dutch, Moroccan-Dutch, Muslim, gender, diaspora and youth cultural belongings. I'm looking forward to receiving any comments and/or questions you might have. need help - sample surveys of social media advocacy campaign usability?
by Radhika Gajjala 29 Jul '12

29 Jul '12

Hi all, This is just a call for help. Does anyone on list have sample (and what they think is a good one or two) surveys that are designed to test social media advocacy/social justice campaign - usability survey that they can point me to? I find many usability surveys that test for how the interface is usable or not - but they dont necessarily test for the effectiveness of content in relation to conveying the social change and advocacy part ... thanks, r ---- -- Radhika Gajjala http://personal.bgsu.edu/~radhik [websites under re-construction]

Criteria for proving that online data (especially forum comments) are real?
by Maria Eronen 28 Jul '12

28 Jul '12

Hi, Would anyone know what are the criteria concerning internet material's validity? Is it common that you as a researcher will be asked to prove that the material you have collected from the internet is real. Since a lot of internet data disappears everyday, mere url addresses are not enough. Even html files can be modified after saving webpages. I would appreciate if someone had time to answer. Maria

I've been doing research utilizing a web-based national survey, offering a $25 Amazon.com electronic gift code upon completion. We do not screen them by telephone. In other words, can you validate your data as being a sample of 100 individuals versus one person who responded 100 times with junk data? > >We learned the web survey service to which we subscribe has the ability to gather a number of what I call "paradata" about the survey site visitors. > >I revised the welcome page of the survey to include a privacy statement informing the research subject that if they continue with the survey by proceeding to the next page, their IP address, GeoIP information, web browser UserAgent string, site referrer, etc. will be collected. > >After the survey's initial screening questions, if the respondent qualifies, they are presented with an electronic informed consent document. The consent form explains in very basic language that anyone who access the survey by altering their internet connection in any way that might obscure or misrepresent their online presence will be deemed ineligible. We went several rounds with this back and forth with our IRB on this. In the end, they were quite pleased and have begun referring other researchers my way who struggle with similar issues. > >Our primary problem was this: the web survey could block duplicate respondents based on IP address as well as using cookies. However, we were taken aback at the huge number of proxy users --- some individuals took the survey over 30 times in less than a day, providing 30 different email addresses! > >After implementing the privacy page and revising the consent form, I created an algorithm for weeding out the vast majority of proxy users, in addition to people who know they can simply unplug their cable modem for a few hours, plug it back in, and be re-assigned a new dynamic IP from their ISP. Aside from the high prevalence of "cheaters," I found a wide range of sophistication and motivations behind the techniques people used. For example, there is "marketing" (aka spam) software that can auto-generate a few dozen free email accounts with the press of a button, even configuring them all to forward to the same address, and each of them sounding reasonably realistic like "johndoe631(a)gmail.com." There are web sites selling subscriptions to "professional survey takers." The customer subscribes, and the web site gives them a list of surveys scraped from search engines, offering some kind of reward or incentive. I believe one of the sites was something like "swagbucks.com." > >I've written an article that serves as a methods paper to describe and outline this process of eliminating false data, validating research subjects, and study design that allows for the ability to ethically disqualify those who complete surveys over and over. It had the potential to drain our study's budget and leave us with nothing we could use., I included a case study of how we worked with our IRB in responding to someone who actually complained and demanded their incentive after taking the survey 15 times. It's a tricky game, substantiating their ineligibility and deception without teaching them how they were detected and prompting them to find other security vulnerabilities. The article focuses on the more technical aspects of the process, judgment calls, and the algorithm --- not just a simple statistical formula. In summary, I suggest Internet researchers must begin to think like hackers, which I happen to be. In the process of polishing the paper to submit for public > ation, I'm struggling with what journals I want to target. The survey itself is related to HIV and cancer, so I could go that route, something methodological, or techie, or more obscure like "The Journal of Medical Internet Research," and so on. > >I'm working on a second paper that addresses the many ethical aspects and considerations for collecting data from Internet research subjects, sometimes without their knowledge or consent, for purposes of data validity. For example, IP addresses are among the list of HIPAA-defined identifiers of personal health information. > >Any suggestions for publication submission, or how to better frame the piece within a particular discipline or field of study, would be greatly appreciated. > > >- Michael Scarce > >_________________________________ >Michael Scarce >Michael.Scarce(a)ucsf.edu >Research Specialist >UCSF Division of Infectious Diseases / >Center for AIDS Prevention Studies >50 Beale Street, Suite 1300 >San Francisco, CA 94105 > > phone (415) 597-4979 > fax (415) 597-9213 > > >On Jul 26, 2012, at 2:01 PM, Marj Kibby wrote: > >> Is there additional onus of proof for web based material? Re: [Air-L] Criteria for proving that online data (especially forumcomments) are real?

Is there additional onus of proof for web based material? How do you prove that survey responses are real, that notes from interviews are real .... The verification is in how you frame the project and write up the results. Marj Associate Professor Marjorie Kibby, B.Ed, M.A, Ph.D, FHERDSA Director, Student Experience FEDUA Head of Discipline: Film, Media and Cultural Studies School of Humanities and Social Science The University of Newcastle Callaghan NSW 2308 Australia Marj.Kibby(a)newcastle.edu.au +61 2 49216604 >>> Maria Eronen <m85327(a)student.uwasa.fi> 27/07/12 6:24 AM >>> Hi, Would anyone know what are the criteria concerning internet material's validity? Is it common that you as a researcher will be asked to prove that the material you have collected from the internet is real. Since a lot of internet data disappears everyday, mere url addresses are not enough. Even html files can be modified after saving webpages. I would appreciate if someone had time to answer. To: Peter Gloviczki <glovi002(a)umn.edu> Hello Peter, I am glad to see the first answer from the mailing list, I am of course very willing to pursue the development of the Socrator with my team, especially as a phd student. It is too late this year for submission to the annual AOIRL conference, I will keep me updated for next submissions.
