The International Communication Association today announced their fellows, a designation that recognizes an individual's distinguished contributions to the field of communication. Among them, our own Steve Jones: "Jones has been hugely influential in shaping the academic study of new media and the internet within the ICA and through forming the Association of Internet Researchers and editing New Media and Society. He has authored, edited, or co-edited 10 books and 150 chapters, articles and essays. He is grappling intellectually with the huge cultural changes taking place through new communication technologies. Dear all, I am happy to announce the opening of our journal, Mobile Media and Communication. As the title suggests we are welcoming scholarly articles focusing on the different dimensions of mobile communication from a social and humanities perspective. Along with myself, the co-editors are Veronika Karnowski, Thilo von Pape and Steve Jones. The journal embraces both quantitative and qualitative approaches to the study of mobility in communication, but above all aims toward state-of-the-art methodology. While the center of gravity lies in social sciences and humanities, the journal is open to research with technical, economic, and design aspects, provided they help to enlighten the social dimensions of mobile communication. Mobile Media & Communication examines the phenomenon of mobility in communication – that is, what is understood as mobile media and communication, but also emerging phenomena such as mobile and ubiquitous computing. Appointment Rank and Qualifications: Qualified candidates should have one or more of the following: a Masters or higher degree, professional experience, and/or teaching experience in New Media or relevant field. Candidates must have proficiency in PC and MAC-based computer environments, as well as in software in the areas of design, web, interactive media, audio, video, and within different industry-standard applications (including Photoshop, In Design, Illustrator, and Final Cut). Duties. Teach one or more of the following courses in Fall 2012: 1) Digital Toolbox, an introductory course required of all Communication and Media Arts students pursuing a BA in Communication. This course introduces students to the current tools for developing and designing digital media, including websites, blogs, image manipulation, simple animation, audio, and video. Students learn the basics of Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere (or Final Cut Pro), Audition, and Wordpress. 2) Media Literacy, an introductory course required of Advertising and Interactive Media students. Students engage in critical thinking to evaluate media, how it is produced, received, and read, and how it influences beliefs, attitudes, values, behaviors, and identities. Students learn the essential vocabulary relevant to digital media applications and are able to create digital asset-based narratives for the Web (still image, audio and video elements). 3) Interactive Media I, a sophomore-level course required of Interactive Media students. This course surveys the theoretical and practical aspects of designing interactive media. This includes understanding the principles that can be applied to the design of a variety of interactive experiences, including websites, video games, augmented reality, blogs, digital books, board games, and mobile applications. Instructor should have strong working knowledge of UI/UX, interaction design, game design, and designing for web/mobile apps. Application Process. Some of you who subscribe to CRTNet saw a discussion of predatory journals a week or two ago. In case you didn't see it, though, you should check out this list of predatory open access journals maintained by a U. Colorado-Denver librarian: http://metadata.posterous.com/83235355 I know every discipline has a different culture about this kind of thing, but with great online journals in our field that are truly free and open access (e.g., First Monday, International Journal of Internet Science, Game Studies), I honestly don't know why anyone would want to send their work to a pay-to-publish vanity press. db --- Daren C. 2012 AoIR Dissertation Award

I am pleased to announce the recipient of AoIR's first annual Dissertation Award. The author of the award-winning dissertation, titled "Youth and the Generation of Political Consciousness Online," is Jessica L. Beyer. Beyer received her PhD from the Department of Political Science at the University of Washington in 2011 and is currently a post-doc in the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. Her dissertation examines political mobilization occurring on non-political websites and defines three attributes important to such mobilization: degree of anonymity, formality of site regulation, and opportunities for small-group interaction. The Dissertation Award committee consisted of Lori Kendall (chair), Soraj Hongladarom, and Irina Shklovski. We received twenty dissertations, all of high quality, demonstrating the vibrancy of our field. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Beyer! A personal preface: As president of the International Society for Presence Research (ISPR) and editor of ISPR Presence News, I see a ton of calls for conference submissions. There are a lot of interesting events in interesting places out there. But the presence conferences (I've been at all but the first of the 13 held since 1998) have consistently provided the most useful and enjoyable conference experiences of my career. It's the only conference I go to where I want to attend every session. If you're interested in any aspect of (tele)presence, the combination of single-track format, social events and meals together with a diverse group of unusually nice people, and especially the compelling topics, makes it something special. Technology firms - hardware, software, infrastructure, services - will be encouraged to attend to contribute their findings and projects that support the goals of the conference. ISPR 2012 will retain the single-track format and pleasant social environment of previous conferences while featuring expanded presentations, workshops and hands-on demonstrations of presence applications, services and projects. TOPICS We seek original, high quality papers and demonstrations that contribute to our collective understanding of the power and breadth of presence phenomena and presence applications in any/every aspect of life. The first two days will feature hands-on demonstrations by researchers as well as technology and application vendors; keynote presentations and panels that feature research related to diverse presence applications; and short, dedicated workshops on a variety of topics designed to provide focused educational experiences on subjects related to presence technology, theory and measurement. The final day of the conference will feature additional academic presentations on additional presence-related topics. The language of the conference is English. VENUE The conference will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. The birthplace of the nation, Philadelphia is a city rich in history and steeped in culture. It´s the fourth largest media and telecommunications market in the country, conveniently located between New York and Washington, D. C. (each approximately 2 hours away by train). REGISTRATION Registration will be available online. Fees, which will include meals and social events, will be at or below those for previous ISPR PRESENCE conferences; every effort will be made to reduce fees for participating academics, and particularly for graduate students. SUBMISSIONS We invite researchers and practitioners to submit work in the categories below. Note that all submissions are to be in APA format and (with the exception of panel proposals) not identify the author(s) directly or indirectly (for blind peer review). PAPERS: Comprehensive descriptions of research or design work and/or theoretical investigation within the scope of the conference. Papers must relate to existing literature on presence and make an original contribution to it. Accepted papers will be included in the Proceedings and will be allocated time for oral presentation. SHORT PAPERS: Short papers may be up to 10 pages in APA format. Accepted papers will be included in the Proceedings and will be allocated time for oral presentation. PANELS: Sets of presentations on a single theme or topic within the scope of the conference. Submitters are encouraged to be creative regarding both the topic or theme and the format for panel proposals (formats that encourage guided discussion are particularly welcome). Panel proposals must identify and provide contact information for all proposed participants. Accepted panels will be included in the Proceedings. POSTERS: Visual display presentations. Poster proposals must describe and/or contain early drafts of the visual display. Accepted poster proposals will be published in the conference Proceedings. Posters will be displayed on an approximately 70×40 cm board during a dedicated session of the conference and will be allocated a 2 minute oral preview.
