New research report by Christian Fuchs about the polticial economy of the European communications surveillance industry: "Implications of Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) Internet Surveillance for Society"
by Christian Fuchs 14 Jul '12

14 Jul '12

Fuchs, Christian. 2012. Implications of Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) Internet Surveillance for Society. The Privacy & Security-Research Paper Series, edited by Emilio Mordini and Christian Fuchs. ISSN 2270-7467. Research Paper Number 1. EU FP7 project “PACT – Public Perception of Security and Privacy: Assessing Knowledge, Collecting Evidence, Translating Research into Action“. 125 pages. http://www.projectpact.eu/documents-1/%231_Privacy_and_Security_Research_Pa… http://www.projectpact.eu/documents-1 Abstract Internet surveillance technologies have recently received attention when it became public that Western security companies exported such equipment to countries like Syria, Libya, Iran, Egypt or Bahrain, where they seem to have been used for repression agaisnt political activists. This research report focuses on the analysis of the political economy of one such communications surveillance technology - Deep Packet Inspection (DPI). It analyses societal implications of DPI Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) surveillance technologies are communications surveillance tools that are able to monitor the traffic of network data that is sent over the Internet at all seven layers of the OSI Reference Model of Internet communication, which includes the surveillance of content data. The analysis presented in this paper is based on product sheets, self-descriptions, and product presentations by 20 European security technology companies that produce and sell DPI technologies. For each company, we have conducted a document analysis of the available files. It focused on the four following aspects: 1) Description and use of the Internet surveillance technologies that are produced and sold. 2) The self-description of the company. 3) The explanation of the relevance of Internet surveillance, i.e. why the company thinks it is important that it produces and sells such technologies. 4) A documentation of what the company says about opportunities and problems that can arise in the context of Internet surveillance. The assessment of societal implications of DPI is based on opinions of security industry representatives, scholars, and privacy advocates that were voiced in white papers, tech reports, research reports, on websites, in press releases, and in news media. The results can be summarized in the form of several impact dimensions: 1. Potential advantages of DPI 2. Net neutrality 3. The power of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) for undermining users’ trust 4. Potential function creep of DPI surveillance 5. Targeted advertising 6. The surveillance of file sharers 7. Political repression and social discrimination The conducted analysis of Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) technologies shows that there is a variety of potential impacts of this technology on society. A general conclusion is that for understanding new surveillance technologies, we do not only need privacy and data protection assessments, but broader societal and ethical impact assessments that take into account the political economy of the security-industrial complex.

2012 Book Award Winners
by Alexander Halavais 13 Jul '12

13 Jul '12

It gives me great pleasure to announce the winner of this year's book award: Jason Farman for his book "Mobile Interface Theory: Embodied Space and Locative Media." More information on the work may be found at http://mobileinterfacetheory.com/. In addition, the committee selected for honorable mention Thomas Streeter's "The Net Effect: Romanticism, Capitalism, and the Internet" ( http://www.uvm.edu/~tstreete/Net_Effect/ ). The book award committee had this to say of Prof. Farman's book: "The committee was particularly impressed with Farman's ability to bring into focus the centrality of place and lived time to the current and future analysis of connectivity and mediated communication. The book provided a nice combination of forward-thinking, theoretical yet empirically solid work grounded in a strong historical understanding of new media that opens up avenues for new research and new theory. 'Mobile Interface Theory' also makes us look at the unfolding present and accept the changes foretold within. It has the potential to inform new scholarship, re-set directions, and remind us that, now, the Internet is not somewhere else, but right here, in our pockets, our minds, our places." Thanks go to the committee members--Steve Jones, Sonia Livingstone, and Matthew Allen--for taking on a hefty amount of analytical reading in a short period of time. Thanks also to everyone who submitted their books for consideration. The award is intended to encourage excellence in internet research, and it is heartening to see so much good work being done. Prof. Farman will be presenting a paper at IR13.0, where I can do so in person, but for now, I am pleased to be the first to congratulate him on the award. III° Workshop on advanced research methods - Urbino (Italy) Sep, 14th 2012
by Luca Rossi 11 Jul '12

11 Jul '12

Dear air-list members, Apologies for cross-postings. Call for Abstracts: III° Workshop on advanced research methods University of Urbino Carlo Bo Urbino – Italy 14, September 2012 During recent years the growing availability of digital user generated contents and social network sites data led toward new possibilities for social researches and new approaches and methods came on the scene. On one side these new methods (sometimes labeled computational social science) offer the availability of large amount of data that were unconceivable before but, on the other side, these data raise new issues challenging traditional research methodologies on several different aspects: sampling strategies, data acquisition, data management, research ethics, data ownership etc. The availability of these Social Big Data offered computer scientists the opportunity to deal with topics traditionally belonging to social sciences (political participation, communication studies, sociology). This situation is widely recognized and is generating a growing number of venues (both conferences and journals) characterized by a strong interdisciplinary approach that aims at moving beyond traditional research tradition of both fields. Starting from this perspective the PhD program in Communication Studies and Arts of the Department of Communication Studies of the University of Urbino Carlo Bo continues its research plan organizing the third edition of the Workshop of Advanced Research Methods that will be hold at the University of Urbino Carlo Bo on Sep. 14th 2012. The workshop aim to bring together researchers coming from different fields that, in their own research, are dealing with: - UGC production practices; - UGC Sharing practices: cultural and legal aspects; - Online identity - Online Social Data Mining and management - Social Network Analysis applied to Web2.0 data - Online information propagation - Online communities Short abstracts (500 words) have to be submitted through the website: http://larica.uniurb.it/scss/warm Deadlines: - Abstract submission: August 1st 2012 - Notification of acceptance: August 20th 2012 Contacts: Luca Rossi, Larica - Dipartimento di Scienze della Comunicazione Università degli Studi di Urbino “Carlo Bo” email: luca.rossi(a)uniurb.it t. +39 0722305726 f. +39 0722305727

Re: [Air-L] Using screen captures in Thesis paper

Both Taiwan and China allow fair use for education, quotation, broadcasting, and library use. (China also allows a very broad fair use exception to government entities using a copyrighted work to transact their official business.) Taiwan’s Law states four factors used to evaluate fair use in any of its many enumerated circumstances. Regardless of whether the use is for schools, libraries, or personal private use, the nature of the work, the purpose of the use, the quantity and quality of the use compared to the entire work, and the effect upon the potential market are all taken into consideration.
