International in scope and multidisciplinary in approach, the purpose of Audiovisual Thinking is to develop and promote academic thinking in and about all aspects of audiovisuality and audiovisual culture. Advised by a board of leading academics and thinkers in the fields ofaudiovisuality, communication and the media and hosted by Copenhagen University, the journal seeks to set the standard for academic audiovisual essays now and in the future. We study, teach and research the moving image, media and audiovisuality, yet we rarely mediate in these same forms and media. Audiovisual Thinking hopes to change this. CALL FOR MANUSCRIPTS -- Special Issue: Culture, Technology and Globalization in the Information Age Issue Editor: Shaheed Nick Mohammed, Pennsylvania State University at Altoona Culture as lived experience and academic concept exists and evolves under the pressure of global trends in the modern information age. Outdated notions of culture as a set of parochial markers of identity lose their relevance in a world where identities are not only hybrid, but also fluid and (often deliberately) constructed from multiple competing influences. Technologies of the information age enable cultures to exist outside of the confines of geography, history and politics traditionally associated with cultural emergence and maintenance. These technologies foster transnational and diasporic communities, enabling traditional migrants to reconstruct the traditions of home wherever they may wander. At the same time, these technologies also enable non-traditional groups with members of diverse geographic and historic backgrounds to evolve into their own "cultures" that feature membership, participation, mythology and lore in evolving forms. The Electronic Journal of Communication (http://www.cios.org/www/ejcmain.htm) invites papers on the multiple intersections of Culture, Technology and Globalization in the Information Age for an upcoming special themed issue to be published in early 2013. Manuscripts may take a variety of empirical or theoretical perspectives; topics may include, but are not restricted to, the following areas: * virtual diasporas, * identity and technology, * hybridity and group/identity construction, * "culture" in the Information Age, * ethnogenesis and imagined communities. The controversy stems from his lede, "MEN invented the Internet'. You may also be interested in the response from tech journalist Xeni Jardin<http://boingboing.net/2012/06/03/nyt-men-invented-the-inter.html> . I also wrote a response piece about the controversy from an historical perspective for Ms. Magazine<http://msmagazine.com/blog/blog/2012/06/04/the-women-and-people-of-color-wh…> today. Interesting to think about the history of the Internet in terms of gender and 'race' consciousness, no? I am part of a global effort--FemTechNet--to archive and teach the history of feminism and technology and invite members of this list to join us in our collective efforts in building the world's first MDCLE. “Dialogues in Feminism and Technology” is a Massively Distributed Collaborative Learning Experiment: a feminist rethinking of a MOOC. For our feminist endeavor, teaching and learning are adaptive, dispersed, and shared. As technology remakes academia and the arts, we see that critical analysis of gender, sexualities, and race have been absent in much of this re-thinking of disciplines and practices. Feminist scholarship that made great strides in the pre-Internet era may be lost in the digital one. Feminists who work in a variety of disciplinary and institutional homes may not share their histories or current work. Course Description Produced collectively by FemTechNet—a network of hundreds of international feminist scholars in a variety of fields and disciplines—“Dialogues in Feminism and Technology” delivers (and grows) ten weeks of course content covering both the histories and cutting edge scholarship on technology produced through art, science and visual studies. Recorded conversations between luminaries in these fields will anchor each of ten weeks of themed content, but from there, each professor will tailor a course best-suited to her students, institution, locale, and discipline from a diverse, robust, and growing database of “Boundary Objects that Learn”—readings, media, web-resources, and conversations that are submitted and peer-reviewed for teaching by the network. Shared assignments will link learners across disciplines, institutions and national boundaries as their own efforts become part of the feminist database and dialogue. Feel free to disseminate this CFP! *Blind Spots*<http://ivc.lib.rochester.edu/cfp-invisible-culture-issue-19-blind-spots/> *InVisible Culture* <http://ivc.lib.rochester.edu>, Issue 19 To set up a critical conversation under the thematic framework of “blindness” runs the risk of holding one mode or locus of vision above others. In other words, by inviting our peers to carry out their thinking with the question of “blind spots” in mind, do we mean to encourage a purely negative criticality or counter-discourse aimed at new technologies of vision: of revealing their artifice and lamenting their hegemony? Such concerns might provisionally be put to rest when we consider blindness less as a metaphor for criticism and more as an actual phenomenon, even how blindness itself might ground a phenomenology. In considering such questions, we began by inquiring into the horizon of vision as it currently presents itself. It is as if everything increasingly makes itself available to sight. Google now not only seeks to “organize the data of the world” but evidently has in mind the visualization of that data as well--of turning seeing itself into a question of data, as evident in the company’s various projects (or products?) such as Google maps and its latest Google glasses technology. In part because of this hyper-availability of information by way of (for instance) technologies of algorithmic vision, seeing has not only become de-centered from the eye: the eye is itself becoming an obsolete organ, at best a point of *support *for the manifold ways in which technology narrows the space between itself and bodies. And yet, how might the blindness of the eye—its “ability” to falter—assist us in thinking about these new and complex modes of vision? In what way can sensorial limits be understood as horizons of possibility? What fresh insights might a critical examination of past discourses on technological vision and blindness offer to our current understanding of contemporary technologies of augmented vision? Another question we hope to address with this issue, then, concerns the relationship between blindness as a condition of the lived body and blindness as a condition attributable to certain media. In Derek Jarman's 1993 film *Blue*, film itself is taken up as a medium that might provide the basis for reflecting upon and even substituting for the AIDS-stricken artist's own faltering vision. Comprised entirely of a single, seamless blue image, *Blue *incorporates voice-over from a variety of sources (including Jarman himself) as a means of envisioning what is “technically” absent to sight. Both the eye and the film camera lens are, in the case of * Blue,* mediated by a larger “poetics” of blindness. By mentioning the examples of emergent technologies of algorithmic/augmented vision as well as a film such as Jarman's, and by generally proceeding under this rubric of “blind spots,” we at *InVisible Culture** *wish to encourage a cross-disciplinary and vibrant conversation as well as creative/artistic expression concerning the rhetoric of vision and blindness from the perspective of our culturally, historically, and technologically unique moment.
