Re: [Air-L] Using screen captures in Thesis paper
by Maria Eronen 18 Jul '12

18 Jul '12

Hi everybody, This is a question that also I've been pondering at the moment. I'm analyzing the content of some celebrity gossip sites and showing a print screen of the site's layout to my readers would be significant. But the problem is that those sites are typically overloaded with celebrity images, which makes the copyright issue a tough question (By no means, I'm going to ask separately the permission of every single photographer or media corporation behind those pictures). On the one hand, I would say that if you can justify using print screen pictures as a part of your analysis, the use falls into the category of fair use (although most of websites deny any use of content for any other reasons than merely personal and informational ones). The another problem I have faced is that academic journals have commercial interests as well (nowadays more and more), so it's not so simple. I would say that the use of print screen pictures would fall into "fair use" easier when it concerns thesis papers, not articles meant for academic journals. And if my thesis paper would not be published online, I would not hesitate using a print screen picture if I am able to justify the use. Anyway, I think it's a shame that some copyright issues try to hinder effective academic critique, or at least, make it very complicated. Maria

Deadline Extended: Is it Working? Assessing Broadband Policy
by Richard Taylor 18 Jul '12

18 Jul '12

Call for Paper Proposals (extended to July 25, 2012) With apologies for cross postings. Is it working? Evaluating and assessing broadband policy A by-invitation experts' workshop New America Foundation September 19-21, 2012 With broadband becoming the central means for providing information services in the 21st century, policymakers struggle with choosing the best model to ensure universal access, adoption and usage. Broadband policy choices range from massive government investment to total deregulation and everything in between including various combinations of regulatory regimes, limited government investment and public-private partnerships. Debates regarding the right path to follow often tend to reflect ideological convictions or stakeholder interests. It is thus requisite to provide analytic scholarly input into the debate, delivered through the evaluation and assessment of broadband deployment policies that have been adopted in recent years. The Institute for Information Policy at Penn State University and the New America Foundation are pleased to announce this call for paper proposals discussing the assessment and evaluation of broadband policies and their implementation. Proposals based on new research data and analysis are especially welcome. Authors of the selected papers will be invited to present and discuss them during a three day by-invitation-only experts workshop designed to bring together up to a dozen American and international experts to be held at the New America Foundation in Washington, DC between September 19 - 21, 2012. This workshop is part of a series of events focused on "Making Policy Research Accessible," organized by the IIP, with the support of the Ford Foundation and the Media Democracy Fund. For programs of previous workshops see: https://blogs.comm.psu.edu/iip/?page_id=24) Presenters at the workshop will be invited to submit their completed papers for review by the Journal of Information Policy(www.jip-online.org <http://www.jip-online.org/> ). Topics of papers may include, but are not limited to issues such as: . Methodologies for the assessment of broadband projects . Case studies of assessment of broadband policy implementations . Assessment and evaluation of specific BTOP projects and of the BTOP process . Assessment and evaluation of state-level broadband policy implementations . Case studies of other public and private broadband initiatives . Theory of policy evaluation and its application to broadband . The opportunity costs of delayed reforms and regulations . Impacts of the rate of progress of broadband policy . Comparative studies of broadband policies and their implementation . Proposals for a meaningful set of metrics for broadband evaluation . Identification of a uniform set of indicators for successful broadband policies . Evaluation of broadband training and capacity-building programs and activities . Evaluation of broadband programs for historically unserved or underserved communities . Assessment of broadband initiatives directed at community and civil society institutions Abstracts of up to 500 words and a short bio of the author(s) should be submitted to pennstateiip(a)psu.edu by July 25, 2012. Please write IIPNAFIIWWS: YOUR NAME in the subject line. Accepted presenters will be notified by July 31, 2012. Prof. Richard Taylor Penn State University

Journal of Peer Production - Announcement
by Maurizio 18 Jul '12

18 Jul '12

[Apologies for multiple posts] “Productive Negation”: the inaugural issue of the Journal of Peer Production is now published http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-1/ The Journal of Peer Production scrutinises the contradictions of peer (collaborative) production. It is thus situated in between grassroots initiatives and discussions driven by practitioners and activists and the debates taking place in academia. The inaugural issue's theme, “Productive negation”, aims to interrogate the role of peer production as a “work of the negative”, that is to say as a critical force. As the traditional left is struggling to come up with an adequate response to the mounting crisis of the capitalist system, contributors propose a range of interpretations about the relationship between the profit-oriented capitalist mode of production and the commons-based and oriented mode of peer production. The Journal of Peer Production also strives to make a small contribution to the reforming of scientific publishing. Taking a cue from Wikipedia, the journal publishes original article submissions, reviewers' reports, and signals indicating how reviewers perceive the revised article. Our ambition is to make the process of peer reviewing papers more transparent and more effective. The inaugural issue is coordinated by Mathieu O'Neil. It includes three research papers, four invited comments and three debate papers: George Dafermos, Authority in Peer Production: The Emergence of Governance in the FreeBSD Project Stefano De Paoli, Vincenzo D’Andrea and Maurizio Teli, Why Free Software Is Not the Antonym of Commercial Software: Two Case Studies from Corporate and Volunteer Based Projects Francesca Musiani, Caring About the Plumbing: On the Importance of Architectures in Social Studies of (Peer-to-Peer) Technology Michel Bauwens, From the Theory of Peer Production to the Production of Peer Production Theory Jakob Rigi, Peer to Peer Production as the Alternative to Capitalism: A New Communist Horizon Christian Siefkes, Beyond Digital Plenty: Building Blocks for Physical Peer Production Jean Zin, Changing the System of Production Stefan Meretz, Peer Production and Societal Transformation: Ten Patterns Developed by the Oekonux Project Maurizio Teli, Peer Production and Societal Transformation: A Practice-Based Perspective Toni Prug, A Note on Evaluation Processes for Social Phenomena with Ambitious Claims

Very cool! Andrew Herman, Ph. D. Associate Professor Department of Communication Studies Director, Graduate Program in Cultural Analysis and Social Theory Wilfrid Laurier University Waterloo, Ontario N2L 3C5 CANADA 519 884-1970 x3693 >>> David Berry <D.M.Berry(a)swansea.ac.uk> 07/17/12 9:33 AM >>> LIFE IN CODE AND SOFTWARE: Mediated Life in a Complex Computational Ecology Edited by David M. Berry http://www.livingbooksaboutlife.org/books/Life_in_Code_and_Software Open Humanities Press is pleased to announce the publication of Life in Code and Software, the 23rd book in its open access Living Books About Life series. The essays in this collection, edited by David M. Berry, Senior Lecturer in Digital Media in the Department of Political and Cultural Studies at Swansea University, explore the relationship between living, code and software. For Berry, technologies of code and software increasingly make up an important part of our urban environment - indeed, their reach stretches to even quite remote areas of the world. Life in Code and Software introduces and explores the way in which code and software are becoming the conditions of possibility for human living, crucially forming a computational ecology, made up of disparate software ecologies we inhabit. As such we need to take account of this new computational environment, Berry argues, and think about how today we live in a highly mediated, code-based world - a world where computational concepts and ideas are foundational, and within which, code and software become the paradigmatic forms of knowing and doing. *** LIVING BOOKS ABOUT LIFE http://www.livingbooksaboutlife.org Living Books About Life (http://www.livingbooksaboutlife.org) was launched by Open Humanities Press (OHP) (http://openhumanitiespress.org) in October 2011. Funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), and edited by Gary Hall, Joanna Zylinska and Clare Birchall, Living Books About Life is a series of curated, open access books about life -- with life understood both philosophically and biologically -- which provide a bridge between the humanities and the sciences. Produced by a globally-distributed network of writers and editors, the books in the series repackage existing open access science research by clustering it around selected topics whose unifying theme is life: e.g., air, agriculture, bioethics, cosmetic surgery, electronic waste, energy, neurology and pharmacology. Peter Suber, Open Access Project Director, Public Knowledge, said: ‘This book series would not be possible without open access. On the author side, it takes splendid advantage of the freedom to reuse and repurpose open-access research articles. On the other side, it passes on that freedom to readers. In between, the editors made intelligent selections and wrote original introductions, enhancing each article by placing it in the new context of an ambitious, integrated understanding of life, drawing equally from the sciences and humanities’. By initially creating twenty one ‘living books about life’ in just seven months, the series represents an exciting new model for publishing, in a sustainable, low-cost, low-tech manner, many more such books in the future. These books can be freely shared with other academic and non-academic institutions and individuals. Nicholas Mirzoeff, Professor of Media, Culture and Communication at New York University, commented: ‘This remarkable series transforms the humble Reader into a living form, while breaking down the conceptual barrier between the humanities and the sciences in a time when scholars and activists of all kinds have taken the understanding of life to be central. Brilliant in its simplicity and concept, this series is a leap towards an exciting new future’. One of the most important aspects of the Living Books About Life series is the impact it has had on the attitudes of the researchers taking part, changing their views on open access and raising awareness of issues around publishers’ licensing and copyright agreements. Many have become open access advocates themselves, keen to disseminate this model among their own scholarly and student communities. As Professor Erica Fudge of the University of Strathclyde and co-editor of the living book on Veterinary Science, put it, ‘I am now evangelical about making work publicly available, and am really encouraging colleagues to put things out there’. These ‘books about life’ are themselves ‘living’, in the sense they are open to ongoing collaborative processes of writing, editing, updating, remixing and commenting by readers. As well as repackaging open access science research -- together with interactive maps and audio-visual material -- into a series of books, Living Books About Life is thus involved in rethinking ‘the book’ itself as a living, collaborative endeavour in the age of open science, open education, open data, and e-book readers such as Kindle and the iPad. Tara McPherson, editor of VECTORS, Journal of Culture and Technology in a Dynamic Vernacular, said: ‘It is no hyperbole to say that this series will help us reimagine everything we think we know about academic publishing. It points to a future that is interdisciplinary, open access, and expansive.’ Funded by JISC, Living Books About Life is a collaboration between Open Humanities Press and three academic institutions, Coventry University, Goldsmiths, University of London, and the University of Kent.
