Is there any published research on "trolling"?
by Tom Williamson 25 Jul '12

25 Jul '12

Hello everyone, I am new to Internet research, and I was wondering if anyone had published anything on "trolling"? Trolling is a big problem in the blogosphere, and I am interested in ways to combat it. I come from a bioinformatics background, and I have devised an experiment, based on randomized double-blind controlled trials, to test the various ways to combat trolling. Would anyone be interested in such a trial? Thanks, Tom ------------------------------------- Read by blog at www.skepticcanary.com

(apologies for cross-posting) Hi all, Wikimédia France, a non-profit organization supporting Wikimedia projects in France, is launching an international research prize to reward the most influential research work on Wikimedia projects and free knowledge projects in general. What is quite new about this award is that everyone can participate: 1. by ranking nominated papers to elect the winner (ranking is shared with the award jury). 2. by submitting important articles in this field of research for the Award. Regarding the latter, we are now in the process of proposing papers and we'd appreciate if some of you can lend a hand. If you consider a paper has been particularly important in the field of free knowledge/Wikipedia studies and must be taken into account, do not hesitate to submit it now! Please use this form: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikimedia_France_Research_Award/pap…. Deadline for paper suggestion is August 1st. After that, the next phase is shortlisting nominated papers. The Wikimedia Award Jury will study all proposed papers to submit 5 papers to the final vote in September. The announcement of the winner is planned in November. Please find all details here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikimedia_France_Research_Award If you have any questions, please use the project talk page: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research_talk:Wikimedia_France_Research_Award Thanks!

“Bio/Hardware Hacking”: new special issue of the Journal of Peer Production
by Mathieu ONeil 24 Jul '12

24 Jul '12

P {margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;} [Apologies for multiple posts] “Bio/Hardware Hacking”: a new special issue of the Journal of Peer Production is now published - http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-2/ During the past two decades, hacking has chiefly been associated with software and computers. This is changing with the surge of synthetic biology, fablabs and hackerspaces, all of which suggests the wider diffusion of hacking practices and hacker politics. Hardware development and biological science are about to be infused with the same kind of contestations and contradictions that already characterize software hacking. This is because hackers are not simply innovating new technology, but are at the same time discovering new ways of engaging with the world. The issue highlights how hacking practices are inscribed in and shaped by the cultural and political contexts in which the hackers find themselves, with implications for the ways hacker politics are framed. The special issue is curated by Alessandro Delfanti and Johan Söderberg. It includes four research papers and two invited comments: Denisa Kera, Hackerspaces and DIYbio in Asia: Connecting Science and Community with Open Data, Kits and Protocols Maxigas, Hacklabs and Hackerspaces - Tracing Two Genealogies Sara Tocchetti, DIYbiologists as ‘Makers’ of Personal Biologies: How MAKE Magazine and Maker Faires Contribute in Constituting Biology as a Personal Technology Paolo Magaudda, How to make a “Hackintosh”. A Journey into the “Consumerization” of Hacking Practices and Culture Morgan Meyer, Build Your Own Lab: Do-it-yourself Biology and the Rise of Citizen Biotech-Economies Mitch Altman, Hacking at the Crossroad - US Military Funding of Hackerspaces Feel free to tweet, blog, share, comment the content of this special issue. We hope it will be a good starting point for further studies of the spreading of hacking practices outside the software field. Sincerely, Alessandro and Johan

Hi All, I’m looking for papers or academic researches related to the immigrants & refugees integration. Preferably (if there is any) with more focus on how technology and social media could be helpful to solve the integration problems. But any kind of resources even if they are investigated on social problems would be helpful in this case. Regards, Asreen Rostami Department of Social Media and Computer Science Linnaeus University

IR 13.0 keynote speaker
by Attwood, Feona 23 Jul '12

23 Jul '12

We are delighted to announce that our keynote speaker for IR 13.0 will be Liesbet van Zoonen. The title of her speech is ‘Fixating the fragmented self: converging cultures and technologies of identity management’. Liesbet van Zoonen is professor of media and communication at Loughborough University, UK and professor in media and popular culture at Erasmus University Rotterdam, Netherlands. For more than 20 years she worked at the University of Amsterdam and she has held positions as professor II at Oslo University, and as visiting professor at the University of the West Indies (Jamaica) and the Hochschüle für Film und Fernsehen (Germany). She is the editor of the European Journal of Communication. Her research covers a wide range of issues in the social sciences, but all concern the question whether and how popular culture is a relevant resource for civic understanding and social participation. She has applied the popular culture perspective to religion and analyzed the connections between political communication and popular culture in her book Entertaining the citizen: when politics and popular culture converge (2005). She is internationally known for her work on gender and media (Feminist Media Studies, 1994), which has been translated into Chinese, French, Portuguese, Serbian and Italian. Her work currently is focused on future technologies of ‘identity management’. The three-year IMPRINTS project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). An additional grant has been awarded by the Department of Homeland Security in America to simultaneously conduct the study in the US. IMPRINTS aims to assess how and why UK and US publics will engage with particular future practices, services and technologies of identity management, while resisting others. Iris and full body scans, and face or voice recognition have already become well-known practice, but innovations like implantable chips, odour scans, online ‘object’-passwords and mobile identity sharing are on the horizon. It is unclear whether and why members of the public will embrace these innovations or reject them. The project brings together experts in design, computer science, political science, media, psychology, sociology, and risk management, and findings will inform future government and security policy on identity management and its implementation, as well as provide resources for further research.

May be of interest to some. For any question, contact details are below. --- On Fri, 7/20/12, Diaz Batanero, Jose Maria <jose.batanero(a)itu.int> wrote: From: Diaz Batanero, Jose Maria <jose.batanero(a)itu.int> Subject: 5th ITU Kaleidoscope academic conference - Building Sustainable Communities - Call for Papers To: "Sustainable Development Announcement List" <uncsd-l(a)lists.iisd.ca> Received: Friday, July 20, 2012, 8:24 AM The 5th ITU Kaleidoscope academic conference Building Sustainable Communities 22–24 April 2013, Kyoto, Japan Call for Papers Deadline: 10 September 2012 The ITU Kaleidoscope 2013 Building Sustainable Communities − is the fifth in a series of peer-reviewed academic conferences organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) that brings together a wide range of views from universities, industry and research institutions of different fields. The aim of Kaleidoscope conferences is to identify emerging developments in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) at an early stage to generate successful products and services through the development of international and open standards. Future technologies should be designed to enhance the quality of human life. ITU Kaleidoscope 2013 will, therefore, highlight multidisciplinary aspects of future ICTs including future services and applications demand as well as socio-economic, cultural, ethical, legal, and sustainable development policy aspects of communities of the future. ICTs can be used as a catalyst for transforming life to meet the challenges of the new millennium, including global economic and financial crises, high unemployment rates, accessibility issues, global diseases, food availability and distribution, climate change, environmental disasters, energy consumption, transport systems, safety, security, and welfare. Sustainable communities will combine human-oriented technologies and human values. Besides technical issues, building sustainable communities also raises ethical concerns such as responsibility for future generations and for the environment, as well as for data and information privacy. Therefore, an improved understanding of technology, its suitable application, and a high consideration of its potential consequences are necessary. To address these issues, and for a co-evolution of technology and sustainable communities, standards are indispensable. Developing these standards will require concerted global efforts by inter-sectoral stakeholders. This conference will help to further such collaborations. Building Sustainable Communities − is calling for original academic papers offering innovative and bold approaches in research and development to build smart, ethical, and sustainable communities. Audience Kaleidoscope 2013 is targeted at all specialists with a role in the field, including researchers, academics, students, engineers, policy-makers and regulators, innovators and futurists from all over the world. Date and venue 22–24 April 2013, Kyoto, Japan Submission of papers Prospective authors, from countries that are members of ITU, are invited to submit complete, original papers with a maximum length of 4,500 words within eight pages including summary and references, using the template available on the event website. All papers will be reviewed through a double-blind, peer-review process and handled electronically; see http://itu-kaleidoscope.org/2013 for the online submission (EDAS). Paper proposals will be evaluated according to content, originality, clarity, relevance to the conference’s theme and in particular significance to future standards. Deadlines Submission of full paper proposals: Mon 10 Sept 2012 Notification of paper acceptance: Mon 12 Nov 2012 Submission of camera-ready accepted papers: Mon 3 Dec 2012 Publication and presentation Accepted papers will be presented during the event and published in the proceedings and in IEEE Xplore. The best papers will be evaluated for potential publication in IEEE Communications Magazine. In addition, selected papers will be considered for publication in the International Journal of Technology Marketing or the International Journal of IT Standards & Standardization Research.
