New open access Living Book about Life: Life in Code and Software by David M. Berry

LIFE IN CODE AND SOFTWARE: Mediated Life in a Complex Computational Ecology Edited by David M. Berry http://www.livingbooksaboutlife.org/books/Life_in_Code_and_Software Open Humanities Press is pleased to announce the publication of Life in Code and Software, the 23rd book in its open access Living Books About Life series. The essays in this collection, edited by David M. Berry, Senior Lecturer in Digital Media in the Department of Political and Cultural Studies at Swansea University, explore the relationship between living, code and software. For Berry, technologies of code and software increasingly make up an important part of our urban environment - indeed, their reach stretches to even quite remote areas of the world. Life in Code and Software introduces and explores the way in which code and software are becoming the conditions of possibility for human living, crucially forming a computational ecology, made up of disparate software ecologies we inhabit. As such we need to take account of this new computational environment, Berry argues, and think about how today we live in a highly mediated, code-based world - a world where computational concepts and ideas are foundational, and within which, code and software become the paradigmatic forms of knowing and doing. *** LIVING BOOKS ABOUT LIFE http://www.livingbooksaboutlife.org Living Books About Life (http://www.livingbooksaboutlife.org) was launched by Open Humanities Press (OHP) (http://openhumanitiespress.org) in October 2011. Funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), and edited by Gary Hall, Joanna Zylinska and Clare Birchall, Living Books About Life is a series of curated, open access books about life -- with life understood both philosophically and biologically -- which provide a bridge between the humanities and the sciences. Produced by a globally-distributed network of writers and editors, the books in the series repackage existing open access science research by clustering it around selected topics whose unifying theme is life: e.g., air, agriculture, bioethics, cosmetic surgery, electronic waste, energy, neurology and pharmacology. Peter Suber, Open Access Project Director, Public Knowledge, said: 'This book series would not be possible without open access. On the author side, it takes splendid advantage of the freedom to reuse and repurpose open-access research articles. On the other side, it passes on that freedom to readers. In between, the editors made intelligent selections and wrote original introductions, enhancing each article by placing it in the new context of an ambitious, integrated understanding of life, drawing equally from the sciences and humanities'. By initially creating twenty one 'living books about life' in just seven months, the series represents an exciting new model for publishing, in a sustainable, low-cost, low-tech manner, many more such books in the future. These books can be freely shared with other academic and non-academic institutions and individuals. Nicholas Mirzoeff, Professor of Media, Culture and Communication at New York University, commented: 'This remarkable series transforms the humble Reader into a living form, while breaking down the conceptual barrier between the humanities and the sciences in a time when scholars and activists of all kinds have taken the understanding of life to be central. Brilliant in its simplicity and concept, this series is a leap towards an exciting new future'. One of the most important aspects of the Living Books About Life series is the impact it has had on the attitudes of the researchers taking part, changing their views on open access and raising awareness of issues around publishers' licensing and copyright agreements. Many have become open access advocates themselves, keen to disseminate this model among their own scholarly and student communities. As Professor Erica Fudge of the University of Strathclyde and co-editor of the living book on Veterinary Science, put it, 'I am now evangelical about making work publicly available, and am really encouraging colleagues to put things out there'. These 'books about life' are themselves 'living', in the sense they are open to ongoing collaborative processes of writing, editing, updating, remixing and commenting by readers. As well as repackaging open access science research -- together with interactive maps and audio-visual material -- into a series of books, Living Books About Life is thus involved in rethinking 'the book' itself as a living, collaborative endeavour in the age of open science, open education, open data, and e-book readers such as Kindle and the iPad. Tara McPherson, editor of VECTORS, Journal of Culture and Technology in a Dynamic Vernacular, said: 'It is no hyperbole to say that this series will help us reimagine everything we think we know about academic publishing. It points to a future that is interdisciplinary, open access, and expansive.' Funded by JISC, Living Books About Life is a collaboration between Open Humanities Press and three academic institutions, Coventry University, Goldsmiths, University of London, and the University of Kent. Hi Emily, Another resource to consult would be your university librarian. They are used to working with academics who want to use various types of media in their classes and research. If they don't have a definitive answer for you they may have a good sense of the best place for you to check for an answer. I hope this helps. Re: [Air-L] tools to extract data from Facebook public pages and open groups
by Jen King 16 Jul '12

Tim - it was mentioned to me recently (and I confirmed it today by revisiting old posts that I've cited) that Facebook appears to have removed comments (at least in their original format) from their company blogposts. It looks as if they've been replaced by something called "shares." Uncertain if this is the case on Pages. Further, if you look through Facebook's blog shares you may notice (as I have) that the multitudes of negative comments that used to be in the comments are missing. I've skimmed user comments to the blog posts on a number of occasions as a way to see what issues people are complaining about so their sudden absence is quite noticeable. If anyone knows more about this change I'd love to hear about it, but I mention it in case you are looking at collecting information people say about Facebook - it appears now that some degree of censorship is occurring. (This may not be true when the subject of the comments has nothing to do with Facebook.) LAK13: Third International Conference on Learning Analytics & Knowledge CFP
by Caroline Haythornthwaite 16 Jul '12

16 Jul '12

> First call for contributions: > > LAK13: Third International Conference on Learning Analytics & Knowledge > > 8-12 April, Leuven, Belgium > http://lakconference.org > > Papers and Workshop/Tutorial Proposals due November 1, 2012 > Doctoral Consortium, Poster and Workshop Participation Submissions due January 31, 2013 > > The International Learning Analytics & Knowledge Conference, now in its third year, is a venue for reporting and advancing research at the nexus of two emerging societal phenomena. First we are witnessing the rapid expansion of the use of technologies in supporting learning, not only in established institutional contexts and platforms, but also in the emerging landscape of free, open, social learning online. Second, the unprecedented availability of data that learners generate in the process of accessing learning materials, interacting with educators and peers, and creating new content in these technological settings, coupled with advances in analytics and data mining, knowledge modeling and representation and open data offer great potential for research into how learning takes place in socio-technical settings and the development of new forms of analytics that can inform learners and educators. Learning Analytics research brings these technical, pedagogical, and social domains into dialogue with each other to ensure that interventions and organizational systems serve the needs of all stakeholders. > > THEME: Dialectics in Learning Analytics > The first two conferences have established the range of issues and approaches of concern in leveraging the availability of data about learning with powerful computational, representational and visualization techniques. This third conference will be designed to consolidate the field by bringing these many voices into dialogue in a "middle space" under the overarching theme of "Dialectics in Learning Analytics", which has these facets: > > The Middle Space: The conference will explore the middle space within which Learning and Analytics intersect, and seeks proposals for papers and events that explicitly connect analytic tools to theoretical and practical aspects of understanding and managing learning. > > Productive Multivocality: Learning analytics is multidisciplinary, drawing on theories and methods from diverse research traditions. Our community includes educators, learning scientists, computer scientists, administrators, and policy makers, among others. The middle space serves as a topical "boundary object", enabling productive discourse between these many voices. > > The Old and the New: We are facing a centuries old problem: to improve learning, but we are trying to solve it using a new set of tools, not available before. We address these problems in the city of Leuven: centuries old, lively new. > > TOPICS > We invite submissions on topics including but not limited to the following: > * Conceptual > -- New models of learning enabled by analytics > -- Personalization and adaptation in the learning process through analytics > -- Learner modeling > -- The analysis of emotion, flow, and affective data in learning environments > -- Ethical considerations (e.g., privacy and ownership) > -- Learning analytics for accreditation > -- The influence of analytics on designing for learning > -- Learning analytics patterns > -- Organizational dynamics and adoption strategies > -- Educational research methods and learning analytics > -- Learning analytics in relationship to other fields (e.g., educational research, educational data mining, web science, etc.) > > * Technical Innovations for Sensemaking > -- Network analysis methods for understanding learning > -- Visualization techniques > -- Attention metadata for learning > -- Data mining and machine learning techniques in learning analytics > -- Natural language processing and text mining in learning analytics > -- The role of knowledge representation and ontologies in learning analytics > -- The semantic web and linked data applied to learning analytics > -- Analytic tools that could be used for learning > -- "Big Data" applications and opportunities in learning and education > -- Learning environments enhanced with analytics > -- Architecture of learning environments and implications for learning analytics > -- Recommendation Engines > -- Interfaces for learning analytics > -- Decision-support systems for learning > > * Applications and Use Cases > -- Interventions based on analytics > -- Visualizations to support awareness and reflection > -- Social and technical systems to manage information abundance > -- Personalization and adaptation of the learning process > -- Corporate and higher education case studies of learning analytics > -- Learning analytics for intelligent tutoring systems > -- Open data and data access for learners > -- Harmonizing individual learning with organizational learning > -- Organizational learning and knowledge sharing models > -- Use of learning analytics in centralized (learning management systems) and decentralized (personal learning environments) settings > -- Planning, deploying, and evaluating enterprise-wide learning analytics > > SUBMISSION TYPES > > Primary Participation > > Full and Short Papers, Design Briefings, and the abstracts for Panels, Workshops and Tutorials will be published in the main proceedings. Submissions in these categories are due November 1, 2012. > > -- Full Papers > Use a full paper to share substantial conceptual, technical and empirical contributions, following the advice to authors given above. Submit up to 10 pages in the conference paper format. > > -- Short Papers, Design Briefings, and Formal Demonstrations > Use a short paper to share preliminary conceptual, technical and empirical contributions, or substantial contributions that can be reported briefly. Short papers can also share a design concept or tool that addresses a challenge of interest to interface designers, system architects and programmers. A formal demonstration of interactive software or tools may also be proposed: such submissions should include at least one link to a current demo movie. Submit up to 5 pages in the conference paper format. > > -- Panels > Panels provide the chance for delegates to hear a range of speakers address a topical issue, e.g. diverse approaches to a problem, or a debate a hot topic. Submit up to 4 pages in the conference paper format suitable for publication in the proceedings, including an introduction to the nature and importance of the issue to be addressed and panelists' position statements. Submit 2 additional pages (not to be published in the proceedings) with the names and qualifications of confirmed panelists and discussants and a summary of how your panel format will ensure that there is interaction between panelists rather than consisting of a collection of disconnected talks. > > -- Workshops > Workshops (8-9 April, 2013) provide the opportunity to explore learning theory, analytics, methods and tools in depth. Hi, Has anyone of you received an invitation to WCEIT2012 "Emerging infotech" conference taking place in China, at the end of August. Or have you heard about the conference at all? During the past two months, I have received some emails from "Mavis", "Hailey3@" etc. inviting me to give a speech (no one invites a PhD students to give a speech) and paying the registration fee of about 1500 dollars. These emails have been sent automatically and they call me by my name. Here's the website: http://www.bitconferences.com/wceit2012/ Maria

Using screen captures in Thesis paper
by Emily Liu 16 Jul '12

16 Jul '12

Dear All, While doing my research on the online forum-based interactive gaming site ( www.gaiaonline.com) I have encountered another problem. The site's Terms of Service mention that "The visual interfaces, graphics, design, compilation, information, computer code, products, software, services, and all other elements of Gaia Online provided by Gaia, including without limitation any artwork, Gaia virtual items, Gaia Gold, Member Submissions, Gaia Member Online Accounts or User IDs, or visual art and any combination thereof (all of the foregoing, collectively, the "Materials") are protected by copyright, trade dress, patent, and trademark laws, international conventions, and all other relevant intellectual property and proprietary rights, and applicable laws. Except as expressly authorized by Gaia, you agree not to buy, sell, license, distribute, copy, modify, publicly perform or display, transmit, publish, edit, adapt, create derivative works from, or otherwise make any unauthorized or commercial use of the Materials. You agree to abide by all copyright notices, information and restrictions contained in any Materials." Yet I need to include screenshots of the forum and user avatars in my thesis to illustrate my research site and let others understand how forum-based role playing is conducted. I have tried to get authorization to use the site's images by writing to their usertalk email, public relations email, and the site moderator, but received no replies. In this case, can I still include screen capture images in my paper? How should I deal with the issue of copyright or authorization? Thank you Emily -- Min-Ju Liu (Emily) M.A. Student in Applied Linguistics Department of Foreign Languages and Literature National Sun Yat-sen University
