List of Arab Spring and Media-related theory papers and empirical studies
by David Brake 27 Jul '12

27 Jul '12

Dear Colleagues, Several scholars both on-list and off (including myself) have put together a list of academic literature related to the Arab Spring from a media studies perspective - a Google Doc https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DU8AOlkTV6F0ZyoGcbk_060iBZG5tWKwj_n97EJ… (it started as a posting on my Facebook page - evidence it's not all about sharing cat pix!). I then produced a Zotero group https://www.zotero.org/groups/arabspringmedia from it which is now well behind the growth of the Google doc. Please use these docs, redistribute them and most of all add to them. I personally would be particularly interested in theoretical texts and/or textbooks for teaching which may not be directly about the Arab Spring but which would relate helpfully to its study (eg foundational texts about the role of new media in activism). I would also be grateful for help in maintaining and updating the Zotero group which is now 'out of sync' with the greatly-expanded Google Doc list. Contact me directly if you would like to be made an 'editor' of the Zotero group so you can add references to it and contact Patrick McCurdy (patrickmmccurdy [at] gmail.com) to be made an editor of the Google Doc. Special thanks to Patrick McCurdy, Radamis Zaky & Zeynep Tufekci who are the other principal co-contributors to the document to date. Hope you find this useful! -- David Brake (@drbrake http://davidbrake.org/) Senior Lecturer, Journalism & Communications, University of Bedfordshire http://www.beds.ac.uk/departments/jc +44 (0) 1582 743028

Any room for our new social software!
by laetitia le chatton 27 Jul '12

Dear scholars, I am a freshly gradutated master student in digital culture (ex humanistic informatics) from the University of Bergen in Norway. I presented a master thesis describing the vision I had of a new kind of social software you will find different from the existing twitters, facebook and co. Me and my small team of engineers have been developing the Socrator : "Upload your idea and make it chat!" Shortly, the Socrator is a motor for conversations - some users create and store interactive conversations on any topic, uploading all kinds of multimedia material they find necessary to the conversation - other users are meant to have these conversations: they access this material by having a chat with the Socrator -Søkrat was a java desktop prototype for 2 years during the elaboration of my master thesis -now the Socrator is becoming web technology and will have much more elaborated skills ( sept 2012 first version) I was wondering if any of you heard about strategies to get financial support in IT projects from the European Union (i am French) or from scandinavian governments (but the whole team leaves in Norway) Naturally; I am also open to propositions for articles or conferences I could use as a platform to describe the Socrator technology The student lifestyle doesn't get what big ideas are about! hehe Looking forward to see your answers private email at laetitia(a)socratons.com -- Laetitia

MINA [www.mina.pro] is an international network that promotes cultural and research activities to expand the emerging possibilities of mobile media. MINA aims to explore the opportunities for interaction between people, content and the creative industry within the context of Aotearoa/New Zealand and internationally. The symposium will provide a platform for filmmakers, artists, designers, researchers, ‘pro-d-users’ and industry professionals to debate the prospect of wireless, mobile and ubiquitous technologies in art and design environments and the creative industries. Re: [Air-L] Is there any published research on "trolling"?
by Theo Plothe 26 Jul '12

26 Jul '12

This may not be helpful, but in my experience, some trolls are simply anti-fans, and Jonathan Gray has done some excellent work on anti-fans. Matt Hills has written some on the phenomena, and Lawrence B. McBride and S. Elizabeth Bird wrote an excellent piece on anti-fandom and smarks in pro wrestling. -- Theo Plothe Ph.D. Candidate New Media & Technology/Social Networking American University School of Communication
