You're probably already aware of it but I guess it's worth highlighting to the list too that the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) does some good stuff (http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/) and Mark Graham (there) did a great talk on the Digital Divide which included lots of stuff a) about representation of demographic groups on Wiki (including dominant language - dominant on wiki, males more dominant both in contributions and pages, etc. which sometimes reflects the historic artefact, e.g. the husband of the woman with most children has a wiki page, while she does (or did?) not). Talk can be found here http://www.zerogeography.net/2012/04/video-of-my-dfid-talk-is-now-online.ht…. Social Informatics Blog
by David Nemer 15 Aug '12

15 Aug '12

Hi there, I'm David Nemer, a PhD student in Social Informatics at Indiana University. About a year ago, me and other PhD students decided to start the Social Informatics Blog with the intent of bringing a meeting place to share our own studies and ideas. It is also a place for us to show what kind of work we do in social informatics and have anyone participating by sending any sort of feedback. It’s an ongoing conversation and opportunity for us, PhD students, to get the word out. I'd like to take this opportunity to invite you to take a look at it, and please feel free to leave any comments there, and if you have any thoughts, don't hesitate to tell me. Our latest post is the book review of "Internet Inquiry: conversations about method" edited by our great Annette N. Markham and Nancy K. Baym. There you can also find posts related to internet censorship, digital divide, interdisciplinary discussions, other book reviews and so on! http://socialinformaticsblog.com/ Thanks! -- *David Nemer* PhD Student in Social Informatics School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University Editor of the Social Informatics Blog - http://socialinformaticsblog.com http://www.dnemer.com dnemer(a)indiana.edu

CfP Experiential Learning in Virtual Worlds Conference 2013
by Moira Hunter 15 Aug '12

15 Aug '12

*************** PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY ********** CFP Announcement for 3rd global conference: *Experiential Learning in Virtual Worlds Conference 2013* *7-9 March, Lisbon, Portugal* *Abstract Deadline 12 October 2012* *Abstract Length: 300 words* *url: http://www.inter-disciplinary.net/at-the-interface/education/experiential-l… * Interest in virtual worlds and their application to learning have increased significantly in recent years. They play an increasingly important role for people in both social and work-based contexts, and they challenge many of our assumptions about how we work, teach, learn, and relate to each other. There are many different types of virtual worlds and they are used for a multiplicity of purposes including gaming, play, social networking, learning and development, work, and also business. The experiences gained in virtual worlds influence who we are in the physical world, and vice versa. What are we learning through those experiences and how transferable is that learning from one domain to another? The main aims of this conference are to increase our understanding of experiential learning in virtual worlds, both formal and informal, to share experience and best practice, and to debate future possibilities for learning in virtual worlds. We believe the conference will be of interest to educators, researchers, students, independent scholars, trainers, virtual world users, and anyone interested in what happens in virtual worlds and what it means for us as human (or virtual) beings. For the purpose of this call for presentations, we define virtual worlds as 3D, immersive, graphical environments, representing realistic or imaginary worlds, in which users are co-presented as animated characters (avatars) and interact with each other and with the worlds’ contents. However, we recognise both the complexity and contested nature of experiential learning in virtual worlds and welcome papers that challenge this definition. As it is such a broad subject area, Experiential Learning in Virtual Worlds precludes a definitive list of sub-topics, but the following themes are indicative of the kind of topics envisaged by this Call for Presentations. Presentations, papers and performances will be considered on any related topic or theme, but we are particularly keen to encourage papers which explore research methodologies in virtual worlds. The Steering Group welcomes the submission of preformed panel proposals. *Education, training and learning in virtual worlds* - Assessment and evaluation - Blended learning approaches - Corporate training in virtual worlds - Education and training in virtual worlds - Scenarios, simulations, role-play and experimentation - Work-related learning in virtual worlds *Identity, presence and self in virtual worlds* - Art of building a virtual persona - Communication modes and etiquette - Identity and citizenship in virtual worlds - Immersion and presence in virtual worlds - Online communities, formal and informal - Psychology and affect in virtual worlds - Sexuality in virtual worlds - Understanding mortality in virtual worlds - Virtual and global teams *Research methods in virtual worlds* - Discourse analysis in virtual worlds - Ethnographic approaches - Ontology and epistemology in virtual worlds - Research design, data collection and analysis - Virtual world semiotics *Virtual world technologies* - Connectivity between platforms and media - Design issues in virtual worlds - Human–computer interaction - Technological convergence - The future of virtual worlds *Types of virtual worlds* - Virtual world technologies in education - Virtual worlds for health and social care - Medical education in virtual worlds - Psychological healthcare in virtual worlds - Social work training in virtual worlds - Therapeutic interventions in virtual worlds *Arts and entertainment in virtual worlds* - Machinima and virtual film-making in virtual worlds - Play, fun, fantasy and horror in the virtual world - Massively multiplayer online role-playing games - Storytelling and narrative in virtual worlds *What to Send* 300 word abstracts should be submitted by Friday 12th October 2012. All submissions are double blind peer reviewed. If an abstract is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper should be submitted by Friday18th January 2013. Abstracts should be submitted simultaneously to the Organising Chairs; abstracts may be in Word, WordPerfect, or RTF formats with the following information and in this order: a) author(s), b) affiliation, c) email address, d) title of abstract, e) body of abstract f) up to 10 key words E-mails should be entitled: ELVW 3 Abstract Submission. Please use plain text (Times Roman 12) and abstain from using footnotes and any special formatting, characters or emphasis (such as bold, italics or underline). We acknowledge receipt and answer all paper proposals submitted. If you do not receive a reply from us in a week you should assume we did not receive your proposal; it might be lost in cyberspace! We suggest, then, you look for an alternative electronic route or resend. *Organising Chairs* *Jim Gritton*:* j.r.gritton(a)gre.ac.uk Rob Fisher*:* elvw3(a)inter-disciplinary.net* The conference is part of the *At the Interface* programme of research projects. It aims to bring together people from different areas and interests to share ideas and explore various discussions which are innovative and exciting. *Please pass this cfp on to others. Thank you. Public Sphere Article?
by John Monberg 15 Aug '12

Two articles that provide an overview of public sphere theories that are sophisticated without being too overwhelming for undergraduates are: Douglas Kellner, (2000) "Habermas, the Public Sphere, and Democracy: A Critical Intervention," in Perspectives on Habermas, edited by Lewis Hahn. Open Court Press. Francis Cody, (2011) "Publics and Politics" Anna. Rev. Anthropol. 40:3.1-3.16 John Monberg

Public Sphere Article?
by Tyler Bickford 15 Aug '12

I've taught Michael Warner to good effect. While his essay "Publics and Counterpublics" is probably too difficult, I'd recommend the first chapter of that book, "Public and Private," which is really excellent and much more accessible. Conceptualizing "privacy" and adding the gender and sexuality lens as a hook really helps students grasp pretty abstract concepts. Or you might consider an "original" text -- say Kant's "What Is Enlightenment?", which is helpfully short and pretty specific about what counts as "public" and what "private" and the implications that follow. Something like that could create an opportunity for collaborative close reading early in the semester, and might also usefully set up a later reading of Habermas and others. Curating Public Sphere readings discussion
by David Brake 15 Aug '12

15 Aug '12

Dear all, In the spirit of the recent Arab Spring literature collection I and colleagues produced <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DU8AOlkTV6F0ZyoGcbk_060iBZG5tWKwj_n97EJ…> I was thinking I might try to pull together the many texts mentioned recently and commentary and make a public document to help other scholars and act as a convenient record. Any objections? Should it be limited to the texts or can I use some of the valuable commentary? If so would those who commented on texts wish to be identified and have their email addresses (suitably spam-protected) added? -- David Brake (@drbrake http://davidbrake.org/) Senior Lecturer, Journalism & Communications, University of Bedfordshire http://www.beds.ac.uk/departments/jc +44 (0) 1582 743028

Dear Adam, While I'm in agreement with some of the other comments in that students shouldn't be coddled, I do know that there are plenty of mature academics who shrink at the mention of delving into Habermas! And Fraser is best with a Habermasian context to respond to. I've found the following really useful as a primer for introducing students to the concept in the context of digital communication/media. No one article is comprehensive, of course, and I also agree that Papacharissi (2002) (as well as Downey & Fenton (2003) 'New media, counter publicity and the public sphere')) are useful texts, particularly given the importance of the concept of counterpublicity. Dahlgren, P. (2001). ‘The Public Sphere and the Net: Structure, Space, and Communication’ in Bennett, W.L. & Entmann, R. (eds.) Fee waiver and Ignite-IR deadline today
by Alexander Halavais 15 Aug '12

15 Aug '12

Just a quick reminder that if you planned to submit a proposal for the Ignite series, today (August 15, or at least before i wake up on the 16th) is your last chance. The ignite talks were a great way to get out fresh ideas last year to a large audience, and a lot of fun to watch. More details: http://ir13.aoir.org/ignite-ir/ Likewise, if you want to apply for the IR fee waiver and travel stipend, be sure to email your application today. More details: http://aoir.org/fee-waivertravel-stipend-for-ir13-0/ For those of you starting out your semesters, best of luck for the fall and I look forward to seeing you in Salford for a mid-semester break. I am already transcribing a map of the local pubs onto a silk handkerchief in case I get lost.
