*8th International Symposium on Wikis and Open Collaboration (WikiSym) *August 27-29 -- Linz, Austria Call for Participation: *Early Registration Deadline is July 29* The International Symposium on Wikis and Open Collaboration (WikiSym) is the premier conference on open collaboration and related technologies. In 2012, WikiSym celebrates its 8th year of scholarly, technical and community innovation in Linz, Austria. We are excited this year to be collocated with Ars Electronica <http://www.aec.at/news/en/>, the premier digital art and science meeting that attracts over 35,000 attendees per year. WikiSym will take place in Linz, Austria at the Ars Electronica Center. Hi, Has anyone of you received an invitation to WCEIT2012 "Emerging infotech" conference taking place in China, at the end of August. Or have you heard about the conference at all? During the past two months, I have received some emails from "Mavis", "Hailey3@" etc. inviting me to give a speech (no one invites a PhD students to give a speech) and paying the registration fee of about 1500 dollars. Dear All, While doing my research on the online forum-based interactive gaming site ( www.gaiaonline.com) I have encountered another problem. The site's Terms of Service mention that "The visual interfaces, graphics, design, compilation, information, computer code, products, software, services, and all other elements of Gaia Online provided by Gaia, including without limitation any artwork, Gaia virtual items, Gaia Gold, Member Submissions, Gaia Member Online Accounts or User IDs, or visual art and any combination thereof (all of the foregoing, collectively, the "Materials") are protected by copyright, trade dress, patent, and trademark laws, international conventions, and all other relevant intellectual property and proprietary rights, and applicable laws. Except as expressly authorized by Gaia, you agree not to buy, sell, license, distribute, copy, modify, publicly perform or display, transmit, publish, edit, adapt, create derivative works from, or otherwise make any unauthorized or commercial use of the Materials. In this case, can I still include screen capture images in my paper? How should I deal with the issue of copyright or authorization? This research report focuses on the analysis of the political economy of one such communications surveillance technology - Deep Packet Inspection (DPI). It analyses societal implications of DPI Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) surveillance technologies are communications surveillance tools that are able to monitor the traffic of network data that is sent over the Internet at all seven layers of the OSI Reference Model of Internet communication, which includes the surveillance of content data. The analysis presented in this paper is based on product sheets, self-descriptions, and product presentations by 20 European security technology companies that produce and sell DPI technologies. For each company, we have conducted a document analysis of the available files. It focused on the four following aspects: 1) Description and use of the Internet surveillance technologies that are produced and sold. 2) The self-description of the company. 3) The explanation of the relevance of Internet surveillance, i.e. why the company thinks it is important that it produces and sells such technologies. 4) A documentation of what the company says about opportunities and problems that can arise in the context of Internet surveillance. The assessment of societal implications of DPI is based on opinions of security industry representatives, scholars, and privacy advocates that were voiced in white papers, tech reports, research reports, on websites, in press releases, and in news media. The results can be summarized in the form of several impact dimensions: 1. Potential advantages of DPI 2. Net neutrality 3. The power of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) for undermining users’ trust 4. Potential function creep of DPI surveillance 5. Targeted advertising 6. The surveillance of file sharers 7. Political repression and social discrimination The conducted analysis of Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) technologies shows that there is a variety of potential impacts of this technology on society. A general conclusion is that for understanding new surveillance technologies, we do not only need privacy and data protection assessments, but broader societal and ethical impact assessments that take into account the political economy of the security-industrial complex.

It gives me great pleasure to announce the winner of this year's book award: Jason Farman for his book "Mobile Interface Theory: Embodied Space and Locative Media." In addition, the committee selected for honorable mention Thomas Streeter's "The Net Effect: Romanticism, Capitalism, and the Internet" ( http://www.uvm.edu/~tstreete/Net_Effect/ ). The book award committee had this to say of Prof. Farman's book: "The committee was particularly impressed with Farman's ability to bring into focus the centrality of place and lived time to the current and future analysis of connectivity and mediated communication. The book provided a nice combination of forward-thinking, theoretical yet empirically solid work grounded in a strong historical understanding of new media that opens up avenues for new research and new theory. 'Mobile Interface Theory' also makes us look at the unfolding present and accept the changes foretold within. It has the potential to inform new scholarship, re-set directions, and remind us that, now, the Internet is not somewhere else, but right here, in our pockets, our minds, our places." Thanks go to the committee members--Steve Jones, Sonia Livingstone, and Matthew Allen--for taking on a hefty amount of analytical reading in a short period of time.
