IR 13.0 keynote speaker

We are delighted to announce that our keynote speaker for IR 13.0 will be Liesbet van Zoonen. The title of her speech is ‘Fixating the fragmented self: converging cultures and technologies of identity management’. Liesbet van Zoonen is professor of media and communication at Loughborough University, UK and professor in media and popular culture at Erasmus University Rotterdam, Netherlands. For more than 20 years she worked at the University of Amsterdam and she has held positions as professor II at Oslo University, and as visiting professor at the University of the West Indies (Jamaica) and the Hochschüle für Film und Fernsehen (Germany). She is the editor of the European Journal of Communication. Her research covers a wide range of issues in the social sciences, but all concern the question whether and how popular culture is a relevant resource for civic understanding and social participation. She has applied the popular culture perspective to religion and analyzed the connections between political communication and popular culture in her book Entertaining the citizen: when politics and popular culture converge (2005). She is internationally known for her work on gender and media (Feminist Media Studies, 1994), which has been translated into Chinese, French, Portuguese, Serbian and Italian. Her work currently is focused on future technologies of ‘identity management’. The three-year IMPRINTS project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). An additional grant has been awarded by the Department of Homeland Security in America to simultaneously conduct the study in the US. IMPRINTS aims to assess how and why UK and US publics will engage with particular future practices, services and technologies of identity management, while resisting others. Iris and full body scans, and face or voice recognition have already become well-known practice, but innovations like implantable chips, odour scans, online ‘object’-passwords and mobile identity sharing are on the horizon. It is unclear whether and why members of the public will embrace these innovations or reject them. The project brings together experts in design, computer science, political science, media, psychology, sociology, and risk management, and findings will inform future government and security policy on identity management and its implementation, as well as provide resources for further research.

We are now accepting submissions for iConference 2013, our eighth annual gathering of scholars, researchers, and professionals who share an interest in the critical information issues of contemporary society. In keeping with our ongoing effort to push the boundaries of information scholarship, we have added several new areas of participation this year. In addition to the usual peer-reviewed papers, posters, alternative events, and workshops, this year’s submission options includes Notes, a Research Paper Development Roundtable, a Social Media Expo, and a Doctoral Dissertation Competition. The official proceedings will be published in the open access Illinois Digital Environment for Access to Learning and Scholarship (IDEALS). All submitting authors must provide basic information and agree to the IDEALS Deposit Agreement: Non-Exclusive Distribution and Preservation License. iConference 2013 takes place February 12-15, 2013, in Fort Worth Texas, and is hosted by the College of Information at the University of North Texas. Those changes are being precipitated by the remarkable development of almost ubiquitous mobile telephone access into even the most remote of rural areas, the development of low cost mobile phones, and the dramatic lowering of communications costs through widespread deregulation and the related competition between mobile carriers. Related to this and of particular interest from a "development" or ICT4D perspective are the design and implementation of services meant to be of particular interest to the rural sector and their offering in many cases at very low or even no cost to the user (supported in some cases by advertising, in others simply as a loss-leader to boost subscribers and usage).

Hello AIR members! My name is Danilo Giambra and I am a PhD Candidate at the University of Otago, New Zealand. My research focuses on Japanese New Religions online communication, and in particular looks at religious communication over the Social Networks. I need to collect posts and tweets (in Japanese) of users from multiple social platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and Mixi.jp. I would also like to build a private database containing the collected data, so that they remain searchable and can be analyzed later. Would you have any suggestion about 1) how to save users' contributions (possibly including pics and geospacial info)?, 2) how to create a database like this, and which software to use (open source or affordable options preferably)? Fee Waiver/Travel Stipend for IR13.0 (deadline Aug. 15)

Conference Scholarship In order to increase the diversity of participation in the AoIR annual Internet Research (IR) conferences, the Association of Internet Researchers makes available up to three conference fee waivers and travel stipends per year. The number of fee waivers and travel stipends will depend first of all upon the ability of the conference budget to sustain such waivers (a judgment to be made by the AoIR Executive Committee upon the advice of the AoIR Treasurer and the local organizing committee) as well as upon the quality of the applications for fee waivers. Applications for fee waivers are invited from student or faculty authors whose paper or panel proposals have already been accepted via the AoIR IR conference reviewing process. All applications should be directed to the President of AoIR (Alex Halavais, prez(a)aoir.org) and must be received by August 15, 2010. Late applications cannot be considered. Applications should be no longer than 2 pages, and must include the following information: 1) A brief description of how the author’s presentation or contribution to the AoIR IR conference will uniquely articulate and/or represent a distinctive perspective (e.g., of persons and/or cultures) otherwise unlikely to be represented at the annual AoIR Internet Research conference. 2) An explanation of the author’s distinctive circumstances that would warrant a fee waiver. These may include, but are by no means limited to: * exceptionally limited financial resources (e.g., as a graduate student or scholar in a non-OECD country, as a disabled person on a limited income, etc.); * exceptional limits on institutional support otherwise normally available (e.g., travel funds, grant funds, etc.); * other exceptional circumstances that render the usual AoIR IR conference fees an insurmountable obstacle to attending the IR conference in order to present one’s own work. Applicants may also include a letter of support from someone familiar with her / his circumstances, special needs, etc. Such a letter is optional, however, not a requirement. Applications will be reviewed by the AoIR Executive Committee. Fee waivers and travel stipends of up to $500 will be awarded on the basis of the Executive Committee’s collective judgment as to which presentations will make the most distinctive contribution to the AoIR IR conference. In order to respect and protect the privacy of the applicants, all Executive Committee discussions and deliberations will be held in strict confidence. The AoIR Executive Committee regretfully acknowledges that there will be more fully meritorious applications than we will be able to award and support. Nonetheless, we hope that awarded fee waivers and travel stipends will not only assist deserving scholars and researchers, but also thereby enrich the IR 13.0 conference in important new ways.

Hi All, I'm co-guest-editing an issue of IEEE's Internet Computing on Internet Censorship and Control with Steven Murdoch. Internet Computing is mostly read by geeks, including a combination of industry and academic folks. But the hope is that we'll get submissions that combine social and technical thinking, to expose that audience to an integrated view of the problems. Thanks! -hal Internet Censorship and Control (May/June 2013) Final submissions due 1 September 2012 Please email the guest editors a brief description of the article you plan to submit by 15 August 2012 Guest Editors: Hal Roberts and Steven Murdoch (ic3-2013(a)computer.org) The Internet is a battleground where fights for technical, social, and political control are waged, including between governments and their citizens, separate governments, and competing commercial interests. These fights take many forms, such as Internet filtering versus circumvention, surveillance versus anonymization, adversarial attacks versus protection mechanisms, and on- and offline persecution and defense of online activists. These battles impact and are impacted by the Internet’s technical structure. As the Internet continues to embed itself into our world, its structural changes will have an increasing effect on our social and political structures and vice versa. This special issue seeks articles on the technical, social, and political mechanisms and impacts of Internet censor- ship and control. We’re soliciting both technical and social science articles, and especially encourage those that combine the two. Appropriate topics include * explorations of how the Internet’s technical, social, and political structures impact its censorship and control; * evaluations of how existing technologies and policies affect Internet censorship and control; * proposals for new technologies and policies; * discussions on how proposed technical, legal, or governance changes to the Internet affect censorship and control; * analysis of techniques, methodologies, and results of monitoring Internet censorship and control; and * examinations of trade-offs between control and freedom, and how these sides can be balanced.
