Love to see the outline, Alison. Andrew Herman, Ph. D. Associate Professor Department of Communication Studies Director, Graduate Program in Cultural Analysis and Social Theory Wilfrid Laurier University Waterloo, Ontario N2L 3C5 CANADA 519 884-1970 x3693 >>> Alison Powell <a.powell(a)lse.ac.uk> 07/04/12 5:12 AM >>> Hi Dan, I taught a similar course last year at LSE, for MSc Media students - the content was much the same but I organized the course around the theme of the transformation of the relationship between the citizen and the state. The first section was theoretical, the second was empirical (case studies of transformations including open data and policing) and the third was methodological. We spent a lot of time working with Scott Lash's ideas about post-hegemony, especially as they might apply to different forms of mediated citizenship. Next year I'm thinking of making the theme civic hacking, and include more on making, what you call 'getting stuff done' and something on citizen science. I'd be interested to know what readings you were working with . . . maybe we could even organize a joint event or symposium for students?? Alison. With or Without Marx? With or Without Capitalism? A Rejoinder to Adam Arvidsson and Eleanor Colleoni.

Fuchs, Christian. 2012. With or without Marx? With or without capitalism? A rejoinder to Adam Arvidsson and Eleanor Colleoni. tripleC - Open Access Journal for a Global Sustainable Information Society 10 (2): 633-645. http://www.triple-c.at/index.php/tripleC/article/view/434 Abstract This paper is a rejoinder to an article by Adam Arvidsson and Eleanor Colleoni: Arvidsson, Adam and Eleanor Colleoni. 2012. Value in informational capitalism and on the Internet. The Information Society 28 (3): 135-150. Arvidsson and Colleoni’s paper is a criticism of and reaction to one of my own articles: Fuchs, Christian. 2010. Labor in informational capitalism and on the Internet. The Information Society 26 (3): 179-196. The 3 debate articles are contributions to the "digital labour debate", specifically to the question if Karl Marx's theory is useful in this context (Fuchs) or shall be discarded (Arvidsson, Colleono). My comments focus on 6 aspects of discussion: 1) Misunderstandings of Marx 2) Autonomous Marxism 3) Corporate social media and the law of value 4) Capital accumulation on social media 5) Finance capital and social media 6) Politics, alternatives, and social transformation -- Christian Fuchs Chair in Media and Communication StudiesDepartment of Informatics and Media Uppsala University Kyrkogrdsgatan 10 Box 513 751 20 Uppsala Sweden christian.fuchs(a)im.uu.se Tel +46 (0) 18 471 1019 http://fuchs.uti.at http://www.im.uu.se NetPolitics Blog: http://fuchs.uti.at/blog Editor of tripleC: http://www.triple-c.se Chair of ESA RN18-Sociology of Communications and Media Research ICTs and Society Network: http://www.icts-and-society.net

Call for Abstracts - Future Internet
by roderick graham 02 Jul '12

02 Jul '12

Dear Colleagues, I am currently looking for submissions for a special issue of the online journal Future Internet. This special issue of Future Internet is dedicated to exploring inequalities between groups in the digital environment. The “digital environment” here refers to the interconnected online environment, which includes all devices that allow users to go online (mobile phones, desktop computers, tablet computers, some household appliances). Inequality here refers to disparities in material access and quality of usage between groups. Papers should explore inequalities in the digital environment between economic classes, racial groups, communities, and other types of social groups and categories. Some potential topics include inequalities in: Material access to the Internet Civic and political participation in the online environment Digital literacy Social capital Telecommunications infrastructure between and within nations Social support Diversity of usage (With respect to both hardware and software) Much research has been done on the technological and economic aspects of the inequality online, but relatively less has been done on inequalities in content production. Thus, special interest will be given to papers that explore inequalities in: Representative content (web content that reflects the culture or interests of the audience) Framing of news stories or events The production of racial and ethnic stereotypes More information can be found on the issue's website: http://www.mdpi.com/journal/futureinternet/special_issues/digital-inequality If interested, please email me at rgraham(a)ric.edu with an abstract or an idea. Call for Abstracts - Journal of Peer Production
by Maurizio 02 Jul '12

02 Jul '12

Apologies for Cross-Posting More information and submission instruction here: http://peerproduction.net/the-critical-power-of-free-software-from-intellec… Maurizio The Critical Power of Free Software: from Intellectual Property to Epistemologies? *Edited by: Maurizio Teli and Vincenzo D’Andrea * >From the perspective of social organization, Free Software can be conceived as a form of critique by adaptability and modifiability, as pointed out by anthropologist Christopher Kelty [Two Bits, 2008], standing outside institutionalized forms of power and providing working alternatives as critical tools. Starting from this kind of understanding, Free Software has been interpreted as a form of critique toward consolidated and contemporary capitalistic forms, such as the extension of Intellectual Property over any kind of common pool resources, or the forms of organization of labour of distributed developers. Nevertheless, the increasing adoption of Free Software by multi-national corporations points to increasing domestication of free software practices by contemporary global capitalism and to the expansion of hierarchical forms of social organization. This is particularly apparent in the form of the Open Source dialect, through the extensive overlapping of open source discourse with capitalistic discourses, such as that on legitimate hybrid business models, combining open source and proprietary licensing. Such perspective requires that the critical power of Free Software be brought under scrutiny, moving from the undermining of the discourses of Intellectual Property, organization of work or hierarchy, to the understanding of the epistemological implications for computer science and software engineering. From this point of view, arguments that see the epistemology of computing as the locus of production and reproduction of long-standing inequalities in power relationships, are suggesting new areas of enquiry. Is Free Software a form of critique of the epistemological basis of computing? Is it possible to connect its critique of Intellectual Property and organizational forms to the critique of software development premises as a professional and research practice? Those are the questions this special issue is trying to answer. To promote an interdisciplinary debate, we encourage submissions of theoretical and empirical papers authored both by social scientists, in a broad sense, and by computer scientists (joint papers are most welcome). We expect the authors to envision the potential for Free Software of being a form of cultural, practical, and material critique. *Call: 500-word abstract* *Important Dates: * July 31st, 2012: Abstract Submission (max 500 words) August 31st, 2012: Abstract Evaluation and Communication December 15th, 2012: Full Paper Submission February 15th, 2012: First Review Completion May 15th, 2013: Final Submission June 2013: Signalling and Publication *Submissions: * Through contact form <http://peerproduction.net/contact/> or straight to the editors, via email at maurizio(a)ahref.eu and vincenzo.dandrea(a)unitn.it The Journal of Peer Production (JoPP) is a new open access, online journal that focuses on the implications of peer production for social change.
