Dear AoIRists, in articles on Twitter in various internet media I often come across a quote from Geoffrey Nunberg who allergedly called Twitter hashtags an emoticon of sorts and 'plain stupid' (e.g. here http://gizmodo.com/5869538/how-the-hashtag-is-ruining-the-english-language) However, they do not give a source, and I cannot locate it. Does anyone know if Geoff Nunberg really said anything like that, and if yes, where? It seems to me that wider context would be important in this situation. Thanks! Daria -- Wiss. Science Fiction and Innovation Research Assistant needed - to contribute to a NESTA-funded study of Science Fiction and innovation. The research is based at Sussex University (School of Media and Film and SPRU). The person appointed will need to be able to generate concepts, find ways to represent complex ideas, and be able engage with the material of study (science fiction). We are not looking for fan identification but do seek people interested in science fiction productions of all kinds (visual, literary, and digital) and prepared to consider their connections with other cultural formations (politics, style, technology). The candidate must be able to see patterns, write lucidly and be able to produce work designed both for academic (journal outputs targeted at various areas) and industrial/creative industry (NESTA) audiences. The RA will be employed on a day rate for around 30 days over a six-month period. They will assist with developing framings, with necessary desk research and critical analysis, be responsible for web outputs, and will also be involved in some interviewing. You may come from areas including English, media and film, cultural studies, innovation studies, new media and sociology, digital humanities. You will be a post-doc or equivalent and will be employed at a Grade 7 hourly paid Associate Researcher level. Applicants need to be available to begin work in June. Dear colleague, This is a call for papers for the newly established, peer reviewed Journal of Problem Based Learning in Higher Education (PBLHE) to be launched in winter 2012/spring 2013. PBLHE will be launched to provide an opportunity for scholars from all disciplines to publish: *High-quality research articles that contribute to the current and future development of problem-based learning in higher education. *Review articles examining the development of problem-based learning in higher education. *Articles examining the intellectual, pedagogical and practical use value of PBL or which extend, critique or challenge past and current theoretical and empirical knowledge claims within PBL in higher education. *Articles examining theoretical, pedagogical and practical aspects of how networked technologies or ICTs can be used to support or develop problem-based learning. For details on the call, please consult the attached PDF-file. For this very first issue of the Journal of Problem Based Learning in Higher Education we ask authors to send an abstract (between 250-500 words) as an indication of interest. CFP: Doctor Who Fan Phenomena

Pardons for cross-posting! Now accepting abstracts for consideration for the new Doctor Who (Fan Phenomena) title from Intellect Press. This will be part of the second series of Fan Phenomena books, which aim to explore and decode the fascination we have with what constitutes an iconic or cultish phenomenon and how a particular person, TV show or film character/film infiltrates their way into the public consciousness. The Doctor Who (Fan Phenomena) title will look at particular examples of Doctor Who fan culture and approach the subject in an accessible manner aimed at both fans and those interested in the cultural and social aspects of Doctor Who and fan culture. The editor is particularly interested in exploring the changing characteristics of Doctor Who fandom, from scholars and fans alike, over the fifty-year history of the programme. As such, we invite papers that address the nature of fandom, the unique attributes of Doctor Who fandom specifically, or the relationship between Doctor Who as a multi-generational text and its fans. Other topics could include (but are not limited to): • Fandom of specific Doctors • Changing norms of fandom • How one knows he/she is a fan • Aca-Fandom • The influence of other factors on Doctor Who fandom • Fandom of Doctor Who ancillary products, like the Big Finish audio or Virgin book titles • Specific fan practices (vidding, fanfic, cosplay, et al.) • Multi-generational fandom • Doctor Who conventions • Gender/Sexuality in Doctor Who fandom • New Who vs. Classic Who fandom • Fandom of Doctor Who DVD • Fan collecting • Learning through Doctor Who This book is aimed at both fans and those interested in the cultural and social aspects of Doctor Who. NordiCHI 2012 invites workshop proposals addressing basic research, applied research, new methodologies, emerging application areas, design innovations, and HCI education. The goal of the workshops is to generate ideas that might give the NordiCHI community new ways of thinking about well traveled themes and topics or that might suggest new promising directions for future work.
