panel on privacy and search engines tomorrow (leuven)
by Seda Guerses 26 Jun '12

26 Jun '12

dear airs, we look forward to having those who are in the region with us tomorrow evening. please feel free to forward to your circles, cheers, s. > ----- > > As part of the privacy course we will have an evening panel open to the public that will discuss privacy issues in search applications, profiling, and behavioral advertising. > > The panel will feature three invited panelists: Andrew McStay (Bangor University), Joris van Hoboken (University of Amsterdam), and Joss Wright (Oxford Internet Institute). > > The panel will be followed by a reception sponsored by LSEC. > > Please feel free to forward to anyone potentially interested. > > ----- > > Place: > > MTC1 02.07 > Maria-Theresiacollege > Sint-Michielsstraat 6 > 3000 Leuven > > Date and time: > > Wednesday June 27, from 18:30 to 20:30 > > ----- > > Andrew McStay > > Abstract > My panel presentation raises questions about the nature of consent in the context of behavioural advertising and third-party cookies, particularly in relation to the full roll out of the European Cookie Directive (2009/136/EC). In exploring tensions between the Article 29 Working Party and the UK's understanding of consent, the presentation highlights paradoxes in the UK's implementation along with lessons that might be learnt from moral philosophy on the meaning of consent in relation to privacy and positive values of autonomy. > > Biography > Andrew McStay is Lecturer at Bangor University, UK, and author of Digital Advertising (Palgrave-MacMillan, 2009) and The Mood of Information: A Critique of Online Behavioural Advertising (Continuum, 2011). Forthcoming books are The Mode of Seduction: A Discourse on Creativity and Advertising (Routledge, 2013) and Deconstructing Privacy (Peter Lang, 2014). > > ----- > > Joris van Hoboken > > Abstract > Web search engines have played a central role in many of the privacy debates related to the Internet. Amongst the primary reasons for this are the collection of enormous amounts of user data at the individualized level, the indexation and digitization of more and more information (including personal data) on the Web and elsewhere, the ever-growing sophistication of techniques to query data sets as well as the integration of search services into behavioral advertising networks. In his talk, Joris van Hoboken will map the privacy issues that are at stake in the context of search and address some of the most important unresolved challenges in this field. > > Biography > Dr. Joris van Hoboken is senior researcher at the Institute for Information Law. His research addresses law and policy in the field of digital media, electronic communications and the internet. His interests include the implications of the fundamental right to freedom of expression and privacy online as well as the transatlantic comparison of different regulatory approaches to the online environment. He is a specialist in the field of search engine law and regulation and regularly writes, teaches and presents on the issues of data protection and intermediary liability on the Internet. Joris was awarded a Ph.D. by the University of Amsterdam (2012) for his thesis examining the implications of the right to freedom of expression for the legal governance of search engines. He graduated cum laude in both Theoretical Mathematics (2002, M.Sc.) and Law (2006, LL.M.) and serves as the chair of the Board of Directors of Bits of Freedom, a Dutch digital civil rights organization. > > ------- > > Joss Wright > > Abstract > Search has assumed a critical importance in modern networked societies. The volume of information continuously generated and made available through the internet has placed search in the role of gatekeeper to an otherwise unmanageable flood of data. This priviliged position provides deep insight into, and consequently extreme privacy risks for, the users of the search services companies that manage search. This talk will examine privacy in the context of search, the social implications of user profiling in these services, and explore areas where tensions arise between providers and citizens, and whether these tensions can be resolved or entirely avoided. > > Biography > Dr. Joss Wright is a Research Fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford. where his research focuses on the themes of privacy enhancing technologies and online censorship, both in the design and analysis of techniques and in their broader societal implications. He obtained his PhD in Computer Science from the University of York in 2008, where his work focused on the design and analysis of anonymous communication systems. Dr. Wright has provided advice to the European Commission, as well as a number of EU research projects, on the social, legal and ethical impacts of security technologies. He has been featured in national and international media commenting on digital rights issues, and has written articles on topics related to online privacy, social media and internet censorship for, among others, the Guardian and Observer newspapers in the UK. >

[Book] We Are Anonymous: Inside the Hacker World of LulzSec, Anonymous, and the Global Cyber Insurgency
by Thomas Jones 25 Jun '12

25 Jun '12

Hello, Has anyone that has read this book provide some feedback or discussion about it? Perhaps other books that speak to Internet or Digital Activism? It seems that the Amazon ratings page isn't that reliable given the authors exposure on The Daily Show on June 18th, and as a result, many of the reviews seem to be superficially spiteful (down-rated the book) rather than providing genuinely informed feedback. Announcement: International Symposium "The Secret Life of Objects", Rio de Janeiro, August 2012
by Ricardo Oliveira 24 Jun '12

24 Jun '12

Dear list members, the International Symposium “The Secret Life of Objects: Materialities, Medialities, Temporalities” will take place in Rio de Janeiro, between August 1st and 3rd. Promoted by the State University of Rio de Janeiro, along with several other academic institutions (such as the Vilem Flusser Archiv and Universität Wien), the event is intended to debate the emergence of new paradigms, epistemologies and intellectual scenarios within the Humanities (see the abstract bellow). The keynote speaker will be the French sociologist Bruno Latour and several other participants have already confirmed their presence (Graham Harman, Siegfried Zielinski, Joachim Paech, Richard Grusin, Steven Shaviro, Ian Bogost etc.). The event is free and open to the public. Enrollment is possible trough our website http://vidadosobjetos/inscricao. The form is in Portuguese, but it’s very easy to fill out: Nome (name) CPF (don’t bother that, something like a social security number) Email Profissão (Profession) Instituição (Institution) Cidade/Estado (City/State) Link para Redes Sociais (Link for social networks) Erick Felinto (President) - UERJ Adalberto Müller – UFF/Letras André Lemos - UFBA Fernanda Bruno - UFRJ Lúcia Santaella - PUCSP Maurício Lissovsky - UFRJ Simone de Sá - UFF Vinicius Andrade Pereira - UERJ Abstract: There are strong indications that a significant transformation is underway in the so-called “human sciences” (Geisteswissenschaften, sciences humaines, Humanities). After a period of intense crisis and uncertainty, in which human sciences have frequently sought to mirror or approach the hard sciences, the beginning of the twenty-first century seems to witness a broad renewal of disciplines, approaches and methodologies. From the questioning of its traditional foundations, humanities are reinventing themselves by a broad reconfiguration of its borders and even of the notion of “humanity” that served as its cornerstone. One of the areas where the wealth of this new scenario is most clearly displayed is that of media studies. Spurred by the impact of new digital technologies, media studies cleverly learned to appropriate the epistemological principles and major theoretical issues that have come to characterize the contemporary cultural scene. The objective of the Seminar "The Secret Life of Objects: Medialities, Materialities, Temporalities" is to sketch a systematization of this scenario from a transdisciplinary perspective, but with a decisive focus on communication studies and culture. The three axes that structure the Seminar represent articulating knots that cut across different disciplines in the humanities, from sociology to philosophy, but acquire special meaning in the context of new media studies. The underlying assumption is that we need to radically rethink the notion of epistemic agency in a context where the action and the impact of the objects, media and technological materialities become increasingly important. Thus, it is not only necessary to investigate the place of human actors in a world enriched by the life of polymorphic objects, but also to highlight the issues that the strong tradition of hermeneutics of the humanities have often obscured: what, without constituting meaning per se, contributes nonetheless to the production of meaning? What is a medium and how mediation processes unfold? In what ways does technological materiality inform cultural worlds and determine forms of cognition? What new models of historical research of techniques and culture are emerging within the current epistemological paradigms? In what ways is the material dimension of experience combined with the intangible dimensions of culture? What does it mean to purport an “object-oriented” philosophy? In what sense does the category of the human reconfigure itself in light of our new relations with objects and nonhuman entities? How important is the legacy of the genealogy and archeology of knowledge (Nietzsche, Foucault) to a perspectivization of the impacts of "new" digital culture? By means of interdisciplinary panels, in which philosophers, anthropologists and scientists will discuss with experts in media studies, we intend to address these issues in order to elaborate a preliminary cartography of an epistemological territory still in its early stages of exploration.

Call for Papers - Youth Movements / Youth Organizations (for Kinder & Braver World Project)
by danah boyd 21 Jun '12

21 Jun '12

Are you working on topics related to youth movements or youth organizations? Do you know people who are? We need your help. We're looking for folks who can help make research publicly consumable. Please check out the CFP below and pass it on to others you know. Thanks so much!!! danah The Berkman Center for Internet & Society is delighted to announce a Call for Papers for The Kinder & Braver World Project: Research Series (danah boyd and John Palfrey, editors) presented by the Berkman Center and the Born This Way Foundation, and supported by the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
For more information regarding the series, please see: http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/research/youthandmedia/kinderbraverworld This working paper series publishes short papers that synthesize existing peer-reviewed research or equivalent scholarship and provide research-grounded insight to the variety of stakeholders working on issues related to youth empowerment and action towards creating a kinder, braver world. The papers grow out of different types of research (e.g., social science, mental health, medical, legal) and are aimed at different audiences (e.g., youth, parents, teachers, school boards, religious leaders, policy makers). It will be developed in phases, and over time will cover a wide range of topics related to youth empowerment and the development of kindness and bravery. For this call, we are looking for papers that are related to two topics: Youth Movements for Social Change. What is known about youth organizing and youth social movements? How do adults and youth work together for social change? How do youth movements leverage technology? What are psychosocial predictors of youth engagement? How do peer norms affect youth activism? What is the relationship between self-efficacy and youth empowerment? What are key research insights that organizations trying to create a social movement with youth need to know? The Role of Youth Organizations. Youth have long participated in religious and secular organizations, including programs like the Girl Scouts of America, 4-H, and Gay-Straight Alliances. How has participation in these organizations shaped youths’ worldviews, civic engagement, and social wellbeing? What kinds of organizational structures work best to engage youth? Does participation in youth organizations predict healthy civic engagement? How is social media used by youth organizations? What are notable successes and failures in creating youth organizations? What are key lessons from youth organizations that anyone working to support youth should know? For more information, see the call for papers: http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/research/youthandmedia/kinderbraverworld. To view previous papers on Meanness and Cruelty, see: http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/node/7491 Important Dates Submissions are due by July 25, 2012 to kbw-series(a)cyber.law.harvard.edu.
