20 Jun '12

Apologies for crossposting! The international conference 'Digital Crossroads. Media, Migration and Diaspora in a Transnational Perspective' will take place in Utrecht next week 28-29-30 June, 2012. The opening is Thursday 28 June at 9.45 in the Aula of the Academic Building. For more information please find the programma overview attached. The full programme with abstracts and bios is available online: http://www.digitalcrossroads.nl For further information please e-mail: info(a)digitalcrossroads.nl<mailto:info@digitalcrossroads.nl> Keynote speakers: Shakuntala Banaji London School of Economics and Political Science, UK Kirsten Drotner University of Southern Denmark, Denmark Radhika Gajjala Bowling Green State University, USA Eva Lam University of Northwestern, USA Lisa Nakamura University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA Liesbet van Zoonen Loughborough University, UK and Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands Because of the disjunctive and unstable interplay of commerce, media, national policies, and consumer fantasies, ethnicity, once a genie contained in the bottle of some sort of locality (however large), has now become a global force, forever slipping in and through the cracks between states and borders – Appadurai 1996, p. 41, Modernity at Large The rapid development of digital technologies has radically transformed ways of keeping in touch with home cultures and diasporic networks. Moreover, the notion of migration has undergone significant shifts, coming to signifyimaginaries on the move which are not necessarily linked to geographical displacement. The aim of this conference is to address the relationship between migration and digital technologies across national contexts and ethnic belonging. Migrancy embeds many of the local and global paradoxes that alsopertain to digital media with their compression of space and time. However, the link between the two fields is still under-theorized and in need of more situated and comparative analysis. Drawing from approaches from the humanities and social sciences (media theory, communication studies, learning sciences, gender studies, cultural studies, postcolonial theory, migration and transnational studies, among others), the primary aim of this conference is to explore how the study of digitalization and migration challenges existing notions of diaspora, identity, nation, family, learning, literacy, social networks, youth, body, gender and ethnicity, asking for new approaches and a rethinking of traditional social and cultural categories. The conference comes at the end of a five-year High Potential project, entitled “Wired Up: Digital media as innovative socialization practices for migrant youth”, carried out by the Faculty of Humanities (project leader Dr. Sandra Ponzanesi) and the Faculty of Social Sciences (project leader Prof. Dr. Mariette de Haan) at Utrecht University in collaboration with Vanderbilt University, USA (Dr. Kevin Leander, Peabody College for Education). The project was funded by the Executive Board of Utrecht University to stimulate interdisciplinary research. See http://www.uu.nl/wiredup. 19 Jun '12

Dear all [ apologies for cross posting, please disseminate ] We have the pleasure to announce that our Scientific and Policy Report 'Pan-European survey of practices, attitudes and policy preferences as regards personal identity data' has been published. It is found at http://is.jrc.ec.europa.eu/pages/TFS/eidsurvey.html. This study presents the results of the largest survey ever conducted in Europe and elsewhere about people’s behaviours, attitudes and regulatory preferences concerning data protection, privacy and electronic identity, both on the Internet and otherwise in their daily lives. The study aims to remedy the lack of EU evidence. It is original in many respects: - It covers EU27; - It targets multiple areas: eCommerce, Social Networking, Authentication and Medical information; - It retrieves data directly relevant to policy making. The full reference is: W. Lusoli, M. Bacigalupo, F. Lupiañez, N. Andrade, S. Monteleone, I. Maghiros (2012). by Swart, Wernard 19 Jun '12

19 Jun '12

Dear All, SAGE will launch an exciting new journal in January 2013 called Mobile Media & Communication<http://www.uk.sagepub.com/journals/Journal202140?siteId=sage-uk&prodTypes=a…>. The journal will be published three times a year and will be edited by Rich Ling (IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark), Veronika Karnowski (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany), Thilo von Pape (University of Hohenheim, Germany) and Steve Jones (University of Illinois at Chicago, USA). Access to the first volume will by free by registering here<https://online.sagepub.com/cgi/register?registration=FTMMC>. If you are interested in submitting a manuscript please visit this<http://www.uk.sagepub.com/journals/Journal202140?siteId=sage-uk&prodTypes=a…> page. About the journal: Mobile Media & Communication is a peer-reviewed forum for international, interdisciplinary academic research on the dynamic field of mobile media and communication. Mobile Media & Communication draws on a wide and continually renewed range of disciplines, engaging broadly in the concept of mobility itself. The journal embraces both quantitative and qualitative approaches to the study of mobility in communication, but above all aims toward state-of-the-art methodology. While the center of gravity lies in social sciences and humanities, the journal is open to research with technical, economic, and design aspects, provided they help to enlighten the social dimensions of mobile communication. Mobile Media & Communication examines the phenomenon of mobility in communication – that is, what is understood as mobile media and communication, but also emerging phenomena such as mobile and ubiquitous computing. Contributions may include, but are certainly not limited to, explorations of the following topics: • Mobile communication as an innovation, including the emergence of new usage forms, the negotiation of norms, and symbolic representation by producers and users • The interrelationship of this nearly ubiquitous technology and the users’ everyday lives • The embeddedness of mobile communication within social networks, and the mutual shaping of technology and social structure • Local cultures and forms of use of mobile communication • Mobile communication in developing countries • Cultural differences in mobile communication • Mobile communication and gender • Specific methodologies that address the mobile character of the phenomenon: ethnography, observation, network analysis, experience sampling, and other still emerging methods • Mobile learning and education. • Persuasion through mobile media in various domains • History of mobile media • Journalism and mobile media • Specific methodologies that address the mobile character of the phenomenon: ethnography, observation, network analysis, experience sampling, and other still emerging methods Please forward this message to any of your colleagues that may be interested. Best wishes, Vern Swart ---------------------------- SAGE, the Independent Publishers Guild Academic and Professional Publisher of the Year 2012 ----------------------------

MEA Convention 2013: problematic dates
by Sam Lehman-wilzig 18 Jun '12

18 Jun '12

I assume that the MEA board is aware that the timing of next year's MEA Convention in Michigan (June 20-23) is somewhat problematic. The ICA conference will be held in London from June 15-19, so that anyone attending there will have a hard time making it back to Michigan in time for the MEA -- assuming that once overseas, the ICA attendees tend to stay on for a mini-vacation in our former "Motherland". FYI. Peterson (petersov(a)gvsu.edu<mailto:petersov@gvsu.edu>) Grand Valley State University In 2013, Grand Valley will happily host the Media Ecology Association?s 14th annual convention in the city of Grand Rapids. Our aim is to provoke academic dialogue, raise public awareness of media ecology, and discuss the relevance of media ecological thought to the broader culture. The 14th Annual Convention, with the theme of ?unplugged,? invites papers, panels, creative projects, and other proposals presenting research and/or exploring topics and ideas related to the convention theme. Media ecology ?unplugged? seeks to remind people that media technologies are simply plug-in devices. The ?unplugged? theme is meant to capture the wide span of environmental mediation prior to the wired and plugged-in revolution of mass media, including architecture, literacy, urban design, transportation, art, and other discursive and non-discursive forms. It also turns attention to recent and cutting-edge technologies that have de-tethered from the plug, including satellites, nanotechnology, robotics, genetic engineering, modern pharmacology, cell phones, Bluetooth, e-readers, solar cells, green technologies, neuroscience, and much more. All abstracts, completed papers, and panel proposal submissions, etc., are welcome, but priority will be given to submissions that touch upon or align with the convention theme. A maximum of two submissions per author will be accepted. Authors who wish their papers to be considered for the Top Paper or Top Student Paper award must indicate this on their submission(s). All submissions will be acknowledged. The convention site, approximately 15 minutes by taxi from the Gerald R. Ford International Airport, is located in the heart of Grand Rapids, Michigan at Grand Valley?s downtown campus. It has an assortment of hotels and a wide range of places to eat, from inexpensive eateries to fine restaurants, all within a few city blocks. Accommodation and excursion information is forthcoming. Guidelines for Submission For Manuscripts: 1. Suggested length of manuscripts is 15 to 25 double-spaced pages (4,000?6,000 words). 2. Include a cover page (or e-submission first page) with your academic or professional affiliation and other contact information. 3. Include a 150-word abstract, with the title. Use APA, MLA, or Chicago style. For Paper and Panel Proposals: 1. Include title, abstract, and contact information with your proposal. 2. Outline, as relevant, how your paper or panel will fit with the convention theme. With the list you are guaranteed that everyone gets everything thereby avoiding the "research polarisation hypothesis". There is also a reasonably clear and exhaustive archiving system which can be organised in different ways. Re. "information" overload I can usually tell by glancing at the header or first few words if the message is relevant to my interests so it's not too big a problem. cheers, Mathieu On 06/18/12, Peter Gloviczki <glovi002(a)umn.edu> wrote: > the list is also what connects us: email is the platform, the list is > the thing. i suspect that if the list were a wiki, we would use the > wiki tools. i personally like the list in email format, it's > ubiquitious and easily accessible anywhere around the world > > peter > > > > > On Mon, Jun 18, 2012 at 6:20 AM, Jeremy hunsinger <jeremy(a)tmttlt.com> wrote: > > we have in the past had all of those tools. want to why we don't use > > them much?... because you don't use them. you use the list, and that > > is about all you use. > > > > On Mon, Jun 18, 2012 at 4:16 AM, Meelis Ojasild > > <meelis.ojasild(a)gmail.com> wrote: > >> Perhaps it's my subjective angle and isn't necessarily representative, but > >> for me it's rather weird that the interactions take place through an e-mail > >> list. CATaC'12 keynote on Egypt and social media today - follow on Twitter
by Charles Ess 18 Jun '12

18 Jun '12

Dear AoIRists, Those of you interested in but unable to attend the CATaC'12 conference this year (<catacconference.org>) may get some nuggets from Twitter: #CATAC12 I'm hopeful this will be useful especially with our opening keynote this morning (+1 GMT) by (AoIRist) Dr. Rasha Abdulla (American University of Cairo): "Lessons from Egypt: The roles and limits of social media in political activism and transformation." In light of recent events, most especially today's (inofficial) victory of Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsy as first elected President of Egypt, Dr. Abdulla's comments should be of particular interest. Cheers and all best, - charles ess -- Professor MSO Media Studies, Institute for Aesthetics and Communication Aarhus University Helsingforsgade 14 8200 Aarhus Denmark ³At vove er at miste fodfæstet for en stund, ikke at vove er at miste sig selv² [To dare is to lose one's footing for an hour; not to dare is to lose oneself]- Kierkegaard
