2012 AoIR Dissertation Award
by Kendall, Lori 11 Jun '12

11 Jun '12

I am pleased to announce the recipient of AoIR's first annual Dissertation Award. The author of the award-winning dissertation, titled "Youth and the Generation of Political Consciousness Online," is Jessica L. Beyer. Beyer received her PhD from the Department of Political Science at the University of Washington in 2011 and is currently a post-doc in the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. Her dissertation examines political mobilization occurring on non-political websites and defines three attributes important to such mobilization: degree of anonymity, formality of site regulation, and opportunities for small-group interaction. The Dissertation Award committee consisted of Lori Kendall (chair), Soraj Hongladarom, and Irina Shklovski. We received twenty dissertations, all of high quality, demonstrating the vibrancy of our field. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Beyer! New Call for Papers: ISPR 2012 (Intl Society for Presence Research conference)
by Matthew Lombard 11 Jun '12

11 Jun '12

A personal preface: As president of the International Society for Presence Research (ISPR) and editor of ISPR Presence News, I see a ton of calls for conference submissions. There are a lot of interesting events in interesting places out there. But the presence conferences (I've been at all but the first of the 13 held since 1998) have consistently provided the most useful and enjoyable conference experiences of my career. It's the only conference I go to where I want to attend every session. If you're interested in any aspect of (tele)presence, the combination of single-track format, social events and meals together with a diverse group of unusually nice people, and especially the compelling topics, makes it something special. Please consider submitting your work and joining us this year in Philadelphia. If you have questions, concerns and/or suggestions, please let me know directly (at lombard(a)temple.edu) --Matthew CALL FOR PAPERS ISPR 2012 "Presence Live!" Conference International Society for Presence Research Annual Conference Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA October 24 - 26, 2012 http://ispr.info THE SUBMISSION DEADLINE IS NOW JULY 1, 2012 Online submission is open at: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ispr2012 INTRODUCTION -- What´s it about? Presence, short for telepresence, happens when people use technology and overlook at least part of its role in the experience: A telepresence conferencing system makes us feel as if we´re face-to-face; an online virtual world seems real; a 3D IMAX film makes us reach out to touch objects on the screen; we get `lost´ in the worlds of novels, TV shows, movies, videogames and theme park rides; doctors, engineers, explorers and many others operate machinery thousands of miles away as if they were at the remote site; students learn about the world and workers learn how to do their jobs using compelling simulations; we think of and interact with computers, agents, avatars, robots and androids as if they were living social entities even though we know they´re not; we´re delighted by perceptual illusions in everything from ancient Trompe-l´oeil paintings to modern digital art. As we expand technology´s capabilities and applications, we´re having ever more, and ever more compelling, presence experiences. -- A New Kind of Presence conference Following a series of 13 successful PRESENCE conferences, ISPR 2012 extends presence scholarship to new audiences: ISPR is teaming with Interwork Media to produce a ground-breaking event that will showcase ISPR researchers and research studies to not only a diverse academic community in communication, computer science, psychology, philosophy, the arts, business, education and other fields, but to researchers and professionals in commercial, government, educational and other industry sectors. Technology firms - hardware, software, infrastructure, services - will be encouraged to attend to contribute their findings and projects that support the goals of the conference. ISPR 2012 will retain the single-track format and pleasant social environment of previous conferences while featuring expanded presentations, workshops and hands-on demonstrations of presence applications, services and projects. TOPICS We seek original, high quality papers and demonstrations that contribute to our collective understanding of the power and breadth of presence phenomena and presence applications in any/every aspect of life. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): * Presence technologies * Mobile & ubiquitous presence * Presence applications in business * Presence applications in entertainment * Presence applications in games * Presence applications in medicine and therapy * Presence applications in the arts and humanities * Presence applications in augmented/mixed reality * Presence applications in education * Other presence applications * Presence theory * Measures of presence * Philosophical perspectives on presence * Psychological perspectives on presence * Neuropsychology of presence * The ethics of presence * Presence in the next 25 years All accepted papers will be collected in the official conference proceedings (with ISBN) and will be permanently available for download in the ISPR conference archive. We expect to have all accepted papers included in the ACM Digital Library. One or more special journal issues are likely as well. CONFERENCE FORMAT ISPR 2012 will have an interactive format in which all participants (attendees, presenters, invited speakers) attend each of the sessions as well as social events, allowing participants to exchange ideas and build knowledge together as the conference progresses. The first two days will feature hands-on demonstrations by researchers as well as technology and application vendors; keynote presentations and panels that feature research related to diverse presence applications; and short, dedicated workshops on a variety of topics designed to provide focused educational experiences on subjects related to presence technology, theory and measurement. The final day of the conference will feature additional academic presentations on additional presence-related topics. The language of the conference is English. VENUE The conference will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. The birthplace of the nation, Philadelphia is a city rich in history and steeped in culture. It´s the fourth largest media and telecommunications market in the country, conveniently located between New York and Washington, D. C. (each approximately 2 hours away by train). Details about the conference site will be announced soon. ACCOMMODATIONS A free online hotel booking facility with specially discounted rates for conference attendees will be available via the ISPR web site. REGISTRATION Registration will be available online. Fees, which will include meals and social events, will be at or below those for previous ISPR PRESENCE conferences; every effort will be made to reduce fees for participating academics, and particularly for graduate students. SUBMISSIONS We invite researchers and practitioners to submit work in the categories below. Call for Videos on Audiovisual Learning 2.0 - DEADLINE EXTENDED
by oranit klein 10 Jun '12

*Call for Videos on Audiovisual Learning 2.0 - DEADLINE EXTENDED* * * *Audiovisual Thinking Issue #2012:5* * * When the development of digital technology changes the media landscape – with for example social media, Web 2.0, mobile platforms and advanced animation capabilities – the conditions for teaching and learning also change. We invite theoretical and practice-based submissions as well as case studies on all aspects of education, lifelong learning and audiovisuality. Topics could include (but are not limited to): ● Moving Image Education (MIE) in practice ● Case studies, analysis and theories of MIE platforms and resources ● Audiovisual dissemination of academic research about learning and pedagogy ● Theories of audiovisual learning, learning managements systems (LMS) and virtual learning environment ● Theories of audiovisuality in the classroom and lifelong learning ● Educational sites and programmes on TV and online ● Educational wikis, viral videos & learning clouds *DEADLINE EXTENDED: 1ST OCTOBER 2012* *What is Audiovisual Thinking?* Audiovisual Thinking is a peer reviewed academic online journal and pioneering forum where academics and educators can articulate, conceptualize and disseminate their research about audiovisual culture through video. International in scope and multidisciplinary in approach, the purpose of Audiovisual Thinking is to develop and promote academic thinking in and about all aspects of audiovisuality and audiovisual culture. Advised by a board of leading academics and thinkers in the fields ofaudiovisuality, communication and the media and hosted by Copenhagen University, the journal seeks to set the standard for academic audiovisual essays now and in the future. We study, teach and research the moving image, media and audiovisuality, yet we rarely mediate in these same forms and media. Audiovisual Thinking hopes to change this. Video submissions are welcome from all fields of study and, as one would expect, the main criteria for submissions are that the discussion and thinking are conveyed through audiovisual means. Please visit us on www.audiovisualthinking.org to watch academic videos and submit your own.

Recommend mailing list software
by Julian Hopkins 09 Jun '12

09 Jun '12

Dear All, I am looking into setting up a mailing list. I note that AoIR uses Mailman (http://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/index.html) which seems to do what I am looking for (simple but effective mailing list management). However, does anyone have any other recommendations and/or key criteria that I should be aware of? Thanks, Julian ++++++++++ Blog: www.julianhopkins.net Twitter: @julianhopkins Skype: julhop

Please post call for papers : Culture, Technology and Globalization in the Information Age
by Harrison, Teresa M 08 Jun '12

08 Jun '12

CALL FOR MANUSCRIPTS -- Special Issue: Culture, Technology and Globalization in the Information Age Issue Editor: Shaheed Nick Mohammed, Pennsylvania State University at Altoona Culture as lived experience and academic concept exists and evolves under the pressure of global trends in the modern information age. Outdated notions of culture as a set of parochial markers of identity lose their relevance in a world where identities are not only hybrid, but also fluid and (often deliberately) constructed from multiple competing influences. Technologies of the information age enable cultures to exist outside of the confines of geography, history and politics traditionally associated with cultural emergence and maintenance. These technologies foster transnational and diasporic communities, enabling traditional migrants to reconstruct the traditions of home wherever they may wander. At the same time, these technologies also enable non-traditional groups with members of diverse geographic and historic backgrounds to evolve into their own "cultures" that feature membership, participation, mythology and lore in evolving forms. The Electronic Journal of Communication (http://www.cios.org/www/ejcmain.htm) invites papers on the multiple intersections of Culture, Technology and Globalization in the Information Age for an upcoming special themed issue to be published in early 2013. Manuscripts may take a variety of empirical or theoretical perspectives; topics may include, but are not restricted to, the following areas: * virtual diasporas, * identity and technology, * hybridity and group/identity construction, * "culture" in the Information Age, * ethnogenesis and imagined communities. Regardless of the specific topic, special emphasis should be placed on fundamental social changes that arise from the increasingly important role of information technologies in defining and transforming human culture. For the full call, see: http://www.cios.org/www/ejc/calls/cultechcall.htm Address all manuscripts and queries to Shaheed Nick Mohammed (snm11(a)psu.edu<mailto:snm11@psu.edu>). Authors who would like to discuss paper ideas are encouraged to contact the editor.

'MEN Invented the Internet'?

Hi list members, In case you haven't already seen David Streitfeld's controversial NYTimes piece this weekend, here it is<http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/03/technology/lawsuit-against-kleiner-perkin…>. The controversy stems from his lede, "MEN invented the Internet'. You may also be interested in the response from tech journalist Xeni Jardin<http://boingboing.net/2012/06/03/nyt-men-invented-the-inter.html> . I also wrote a response piece about the controversy from an historical perspective for Ms. Magazine<http://msmagazine.com/blog/blog/2012/06/04/the-women-and-people-of-color-wh…> today. Interesting to think about the history of the Internet in terms of gender and 'race' consciousness, no? Also, if any list members could recommend further reading on Internet history (including computing) that includes discussions about gender, 'race', and so forth, I'd appreciate it! Tara -- Tara L. men invented feminism
by Alex Juhasz 08 Jun '12

08 Jun '12

I am part of a global effort--FemTechNet--to archive and teach the history of feminism and technology and invite members of this list to join us in our collective efforts in building the world's first MDCLE. “Dialogues in Feminism and Technology” is a Massively Distributed Collaborative Learning Experiment: a feminist rethinking of a MOOC. For our feminist endeavor, teaching and learning are adaptive, dispersed, and shared. As technology remakes academia and the arts, we see that critical analysis of gender, sexualities, and race have been absent in much of this re-thinking of disciplines and practices. Feminist scholarship that made great strides in the pre-Internet era may be lost in the digital one. Feminists who work in a variety of disciplinary and institutional homes may not share their histories or current work. Course Description Produced collectively by FemTechNet—a network of hundreds of international feminist scholars in a variety of fields and disciplines—“Dialogues in Feminism and Technology” delivers (and grows) ten weeks of course content covering both the histories and cutting edge scholarship on technology produced through art, science and visual studies. Recorded conversations between luminaries in these fields will anchor each of ten weeks of themed content, but from there, each professor will tailor a course best-suited to her students, institution, locale, and discipline from a diverse, robust, and growing database of “Boundary Objects that Learn”—readings, media, web-resources, and conversations that are submitted and peer-reviewed for teaching by the network. Shared assignments will link learners across disciplines, institutions and national boundaries as their own efforts become part of the feminist database and dialogue. You can join the network by joining our listserv which sits on the fembotcollective.org<http://fembotcollective.org/> site under the pull-down "Register" Thanks and I hope to be collaborating with many of you soon.
