CFP InVisible Culture Issue 19: Blind Spots
by iskandar zulkarnain 08 Jun '12

08 Jun '12

My colleagues and I in *InVisible Culture* just launched our latest call for paper for our journal. And we would like to use this list to spread the word. Feel free to disseminate this CFP! *Blind Spots*<http://ivc.lib.rochester.edu/cfp-invisible-culture-issue-19-blind-spots/> *InVisible Culture* <http://ivc.lib.rochester.edu>, Issue 19 To set up a critical conversation under the thematic framework of “blindness” runs the risk of holding one mode or locus of vision above others. In other words, by inviting our peers to carry out their thinking with the question of “blind spots” in mind, do we mean to encourage a purely negative criticality or counter-discourse aimed at new technologies of vision: of revealing their artifice and lamenting their hegemony? Such concerns might provisionally be put to rest when we consider blindness less as a metaphor for criticism and more as an actual phenomenon, even how blindness itself might ground a phenomenology. In considering such questions, we began by inquiring into the horizon of vision as it currently presents itself. It is as if everything increasingly makes itself available to sight. Google now not only seeks to “organize the data of the world” but evidently has in mind the visualization of that data as well--of turning seeing itself into a question of data, as evident in the company’s various projects (or products?) such as Google maps and its latest Google glasses technology. In part because of this hyper-availability of information by way of (for instance) technologies of algorithmic vision, seeing has not only become de-centered from the eye: the eye is itself becoming an obsolete organ, at best a point of *support *for the manifold ways in which technology narrows the space between itself and bodies. And yet, how might the blindness of the eye—its “ability” to falter—assist us in thinking about these new and complex modes of vision? In what way can sensorial limits be understood as horizons of possibility? What fresh insights might a critical examination of past discourses on technological vision and blindness offer to our current understanding of contemporary technologies of augmented vision? Another question we hope to address with this issue, then, concerns the relationship between blindness as a condition of the lived body and blindness as a condition attributable to certain media. In Derek Jarman's 1993 film *Blue*, film itself is taken up as a medium that might provide the basis for reflecting upon and even substituting for the AIDS-stricken artist's own faltering vision. Comprised entirely of a single, seamless blue image, *Blue *incorporates voice-over from a variety of sources (including Jarman himself) as a means of envisioning what is “technically” absent to sight. Both the eye and the film camera lens are, in the case of * Blue,* mediated by a larger “poetics” of blindness. By mentioning the examples of emergent technologies of algorithmic/augmented vision as well as a film such as Jarman's, and by generally proceeding under this rubric of “blind spots,” we at *InVisible Culture** *wish to encourage a cross-disciplinary and vibrant conversation as well as creative/artistic expression concerning the rhetoric of vision and blindness from the perspective of our culturally, historically, and technologically unique moment. Topics could include: *new media and sensorial “authenticity” * blindness as a critical-discursive symptom * blindness and affect * media decay/rejuvenation * glitches * how media reflect on their own blindness * gender and blindness * impairment and access * blind temporalities * blindness as form and content * histories and theories of technologies of visualization (i.e. stereoscope, 3D, IMAX) * race/ethnicity/nationality and technological blindness * code/algorithm and augmented vision technologies * blindness and the politics of (in)visibility* Please send inquiries and completed papers (MLA style) of between 4,000 and 10,000 words to ivc[dot]rochester[at]gmail[dot]com by *September 1st, 2012 at 11:59pm EST*. *Creative/Artistic Works* * *In addition to written materials, *InVisible Culture* is for this issue accepting work done on other media (video, photography, drawing, codework) that reflect upon the theme as it is outlined above. For questions or more details concerning acceptable formats, please use the contact form on our website with the subject "Creative/Artistic Work Submission." *Reviews* * **InVisible Culture* is also currently seeking submissions for reviews of book, exhibition, and film (600-1000 words). To submit a review proposal, please use the contact form on our website with the subject "Review Submission." *Blog* * *The journal also invites post submissions to its blog feature, which will accommodate more immediate responses to the topic of the current issue. All best, Becca --- *Project Manager <https://sjobs.brassring.com/1033/asp/tg/cim_jobdetail.asp?jobId=880847&Part…>:* The Center is looking to hire a Project Manager to drive forward a diverse portfolio of Berkman's research projects; support critical institutional initiatives; and provide high level, strategic management to project teams, focusing on systems/efficacy of the efforts. The project manager will have a broad skill set, including deft management abilities, project team coordination and experience with direct supervision and mentoring; extensive research and writing experience; adaptive workflow management; event planning and implementation; and outstanding writing and verbal skills. In addition, the project manager will have outstanding interpersonal skills; a proven capacity to work independently and as a team member; sound judgment; and exceptional ethical standards. This project is a key component of a future, new, robust Internet and is an enabler for free and open online expression, disaster recovery, and load balancing in any online arena. For this project, the Berkman Center is considering two possible candidate profiles: either a very hands-on technologist to work as a Senior Systems Architect or a skilled project manager to work as a Lead Platform Manager. Both iterations of this role are listed and we ask interested candidates to please apply to the one that best suits you. The Senior Systems Architect <https://sjobs.brassring.com/1033/asp/tg/cim_jobdetail.asp?jobId=881344&Part…> is a very hands-on technical position. The candidate must have demonstrated expertise in complex, multi-tiered application development and displayed experience developing large-scale applications. The Senior Systems Architect will own the roadmap for this project and must collaborate with project managers and technical team on features, requirements, and critical technical decisions. She or he will produce and review high-level, detailed technical designs for architecture enhancements and additions; review code with developers and ensure adherence to coding standards; write and execute test cases at various phases of the project. As well, she or he will be responsible for the progress of the project during research, pilot and implementation phases. For a full description of the responsibilities, qualifications, and application instructions, please visit the Harvard Human Resources Senior Systems Architect listing <https://sjobs.brassring.com/1033/asp/tg/cim_jobdetail.asp?jobId=881344&Part…>. This position will work closely with the entire project team, including Berkman Center staff and Principal Investigator, and will oversee the contributions of junior staff and Research Assistants. A passion for Internet freedom and history of delivering great products are instrumental for this role. A specific focus on tools for network health, network proxies, routing robustness and/or network circumvention is helpful, but any background in managing a complex development project may be considered. For a full description of the responsibilities, qualifications, and application instructions, please visit the Harvard Human Resources Lead Platform Manager listing <https://sjobs.brassring.com/1033/asp/tg/cim_jobdetail.asp?jobId=881338&Part…>. *Junior Web Developer <https://sjobs.brassring.com/1033/asp/tg/cim_jobdetail.asp?jobId=865430&Part…>:* Our Geek Cave is in a phase of exciting expansion, and, along with the above additions that will all touch and work with the technologists on staff, we are still accepting applications for a junior web developer. We welcome applications from adaptable, flexible and persistent geeks who love clean, well-designed code and who want to help us expand our Blogs@Law platform. The successful candidate will support a growing WordPress installation, develop web-based applications and build UIs, and create technical and end-user guide documents. In concert with others, the developer will interface with clients. The developer will need to keep current with tools and technologies of open source software. He or she will work as part of a team and support other developers on their projects. "how we met" FB research
by Nicole Ellison 07 Jun '12

Hi Ali, This isn't exactly what you are looking for, but a recent short paper at ICWSM (International Conference on Weblogs and Social Media) in Dublin used Facebook data to explore the "how we met each other" meme on Facebook, which some analysis of these trends. It is linked on Lada Adamic's site (http://www.ladamic.com/) as: How you met me. Lada A. Adamic, Thomas M. Lento, Andrew T. Fiore, ICWSM'12 short paper. Abstract: A popular Facebook meme asks a user’s friends to recall how they met that user and then to paste the same query in their own status. We study the spread of this particular meme, which engaged millions of Facebook users, and the insights into relationship formation that the resulting compilation of answers provides. We describe the locations, relationships, and circumstances that contribute to formations of friendships that are represented on Facebook. I'll take this opportunity to say I'm at ICWSM now, and have been very impressed with the quality of the papers (disclosure: I'm a co-chair) and its relevance for AOIR-ers. I encourage you all to look through the proceedings (online at http://www.aaai.org/Library/ICWSM/icwsm12contents.php) and consider this as a venue for your work. It will be in the US next year - venue TBD. Nicole ---------------- Message: 5 Date: Wed, 06 Jun 2012 14:59:14 +0100 From: "S. M. I appreciate it. Natalie, the link you gave me isn't working, but I guess, you were trying to share this paper: Lewis, K., Kaufman, J., Gonzalez, M., Wimmer, A., & Christakis, N. (2008). What I was looking for, for instance, how people have developed their links in Facebook feature by self-reporting (how X met with Y in real life). -----Original Message----- From: ciresearchers-owner(a)vancouvercommunity.net [mailto:ciresearchers-owner@vancouvercommunity.net] On Behalf Of Susan O'Donnell Sent: Monday, June 04, 2012 3:34 PM To: ciresearchers(a)vancouvercommunity.net Subject: [ciresearchers] JoCI Special Issue on the First Mile of Broadband - call for submissions from outside North America Hi CI colleagues, Thank-you to everyone who responded to our call for papers by the deadline, much appreciated. We have some interesting proposals to review and are excited about the upcoming special issue... However we received few proposals from outside North America and so are extending the deadline for abstracts for contributions about communities in South America, Asia, Africa and Europe. Attached is the original CfP. Please note the contributions can be in either English or French and in addition to research articles we are also looking for short case studies or community stories and position papers. If you think your research might fit this call but are unsure please contact me and we can discuss... Call for papers - Journal of Community Informatics (JoCI) Special Issue: The First Mile of Broadband Connectivity in Communities http://firstmile.ca Please distribute this call for papers to your colleagues. Articles will be published in English and French. The Journal of Community Informatics (http://ci-journal.net) is concerned with research on the uses and appropriations of information and communication technologies (ICT) that enable communities to "improve their processes, achieve their objectives and overcome the 'digital divides' that exist both within and between communities." Since its first issues, in 2004, the journal has built an excellent reputation among academics, professionals and policy-makers involved in ICT initiatives aiming at the empowerment of citizens and communities. The Journal of Community Informatics is preparing a special issue on the "First Mile" of broadband connectivity in communities, scheduled for publication in 2013. We invite contributions from community members, researchers, graduate students, government policy makers, policy analysts, activists, practitioners, community developers, project and program leaders and staff, technology developers and technicians. Traditionally, the "last mile" of broadband refers to the final leg of connectivity from the telecommunications provider to the home. The First Mile concept turns that around - it refers to policies and practices that support communities to invest in, own and build their local broadband infrastructure and to shape and use it to meet community needs. The First Mile is an alternative to the traditional corporate, institutional, and urban-centered telecommunications approaches. In Canada, the First Mile project is documenting cases of First Nations communities connected to broadband in ways that support sustainable, locally-driven services and activities (http://firstmile.ca) We would like to share Canadian First Mile-related research and stories with the international community and learn from First Mile, parallel and associated experiences internationally. This JoCI Special Issue will accept contributions in either English or French and will publish articles in either or both languages. The deadline for abstracts is May 31, 2012. What we are looking for: Contributions exploring the First Mile of broadband connectivity and parallel or associated experiences in Canada and internationally. Contributions based on accepted abstracts can be: .Original research (maximum 4,000 words) .Vision statements, theoretical position papers (maximum 4,000 words) .Case studies / community stories (500 to 1,500 words) Contributions can focus on these and related topics: .Case studies of First Mile initiatives or parallel / associated experiences in communities .Theories about First Mile initiatives and related experiences in communities .Community alternatives to corporate telecommunications services .Policy frameworks and public funding programs structured to support community-owned construction and operation of broadband infrastructure .How communities are applying principles of OCAP (ownership, control, access and possession) to the data flowing on their local networks .Experiences of strategic partnerships that sustain these community initiatives .Community ownership and delivery of community services using broadband .Community economic development using broadband networks .The economic business case to sustain the operation and maintenance of the community network and the applications .The supports, partners, infrastructure and local capacity necessary to sustain First Mile operations .Public / government procurement policies and programs for services that support the First Mile telecom network .Challenges and opportunities for community-owned local broadband networks .Community-based approaches for researching First Mile initiatives Timelines: .Anytime: Email any of the guest editors with questions .May 31, 2012: Deadline for abstracts - abstracts must include author(s) and affiliation(s) and an outline of the contribution (maximum 200 words). Email abstracts to Susan O'Donnell (susanodo(a)unb.ca) .June 30: Decisions to authors .September 30: Deadline for authors to submit completed contributions .October-November 2012: Peer-review .November: Decisions, requests for revisions sent to authors .January 2013: Authors submit final versions for publication .January-February 2013: Translation of articles into French / English .April 2013: JoCI Special Issue published online Guest co-editors: .Susan O'Donnell (susanodo(a)unb.ca) - University of New Brunswick (www.unb.ca) .Brian Beaton (brian.beaton(a)knet.ca) & Brian Walmark (brian.walmark(a)knet.ca) - Keewaytinook Okimakanak (www.knet.ca) .Tim Whiteduck (TWhiteduck(a)cepn-fnec.com) - First Nations Education Council (www.cepn-fnec.com) .Kevin Burton - (admin(a)firstnationhelp.com) - Atlantic Canada's First Nation Help Desk (www.firstnationhelp.com) .Rob McMahon (rma29(a)sfu.ca) & Richard Smith (smith(a)sfu.ca) - Simon Fraser University (www.sfu.ca) .Michael Gurstein (gurstein(a)gmail.com) - Centre for Community Informatics Research, Development and Training (www.communityinformatics.net) .William McIver, Jr. (Bill.McIver(a)nrc.gc.ca) - National Research Council (www.nrc.ca) & University of New Brunswick (www.unb.ca Deadline for abstracts: May 31, 2012 Email abstracts to: Susan O'Donnell susanodo(a)unb.ca The new deadline for submissions from outside North America is Saturday, June 30.
