[Reminder] Media Pluralism & New Media Forum - European Parliament Brussels - 27th June
by Jo Pierson 13 Jun '12

13 Jun '12

** REMINDER ** Only 10 days left to register and engage in this important debate in the European Parliament: wIDER? wORLD? wEB? PAN-EUROPEAN FORUM ON MEDIA PLURALISM & NEW MEDIA Wednesday 27 June 2012; European Parliament - Plenary Chamber, Brussels (9:30 - 18:00) "Twenty years after the "big leap forward" in democracy, media pluralism is in trouble in too many countries in the wider Europe. Governmental or oligarchic monopolies are getting thicker by the year, and not only in post-Soviet nations but also inside the EU walls. The burgeoning Internet-based media alone cannot provide for a functioning diversity of public opinion, and yet they are already under attack. This Pan-European Forum should pick the brains of all those concerned for the future of our shared freedoms, and move the European Union beyond non-intervention, to become a protector of media diversity in our nations." (Miklos Haraszti, former OSCE representative on Freedom of the Media, writer, journalist, human rights advocate and university professor - 7 June 2012) Don't miss this opportunity to follow – and take part in – this debate in the heart of the European Parliament with top speakers from the media, telecoms and internet industries, politics, regulators, judiciary, academics, NGOs and civil society, such as: Neelie Kroes (Vice-President of the European Commission); Herta Däubler-Gmelin (member European Commission High Level Expert Group); Nils Muižnieks (Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights); Ženet Mujić (OSCE); Ingrid Lieten (Flemish Media Minister); Christian Van Thillo (CEO De Persgroep; Chairman European Commission Media Futures Group); Anu Nissinen (CEO Sanoma Media Finland); Tobias Schmid (Executive Vice-President Governmental Affairs, RTL–Group); Jean Paul Philipott (President EBU and CEO RTBF); Helen Boaden (Director BBC); Denis Staunton (Deputy Editor The Irish Times); Duco Sickinghe (CEO Telenet); Santiago de la Mora (Director Print Content Partnerships EMEA, Google); Erika Mann (Director EU Affairs, Facebook); Brian Message (Manager of Radiohead; Chairman, Music Managers' Forum), Nick Mason (Pink Floyd), Hugh Grant (Film Actor)… Reserve your seat and register today: http://www.mediapluralism.eu If you cannot access the website, or need to cancel your participation, please contact nmf27(a)mediapluralism.eu DEVISED BY: The Honourable Society of Gray's Inn (UK), University of Leuven, ICRI & IBBT (Belgium) and the Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom (Italy) SUPPORTED BY (a.o.): Alliance Internationale de Journalistes; London School of Economics; Mirovni (Peace) Institute, Slovenia; Central European University, Budapest; University of Westminster; European Publishers Council; Reporters Without Borders (Reporters Sans Frontières); Index without Censorship; International Federation of Journalists; European Alternatives; Centre for Freedom of the Media, University of Sheffield; European Platform of Regulatory Authorities (EPRA); European Broadcasting Union (EBU); MEDIADEM; Music Managers Forum; Association of European Journalists; European Association of Viewers Interests; BEUC (the European Consumer Organisation) Prof. Dr. Peggy Valcke Research Professor KU Leuven - Lecturer media law HU Brussel - Guest Professor University of Tilburg & Florence School of Regulation Director Interdisciplinary Centre for Law & ICT (ICRI) ICRI KU Leuven - IBBT Sint-Michielsstraat 6, box 3443 BE- 3000 Leuven Belgium Tel. +32 16-32 54 70 / Fax +32 16-32 54 38 peggy.valcke(a)law.kuleuven.be - http://law.kuleuven.be/icri - http://www.ibbt.be SSRN author page: http://ssrn.com/author=1093142 NEW! Wow. And thank you.
by Steve Jones 13 Jun '12

13 Jun '12

Thank you to everyone who has posted comments to air-l, emailed me privately, posted on Facebook, Twitter and elsewhere about my being named an ICA Fellow. I'm having a George Bailey moment (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038650/ though rest assured the reference is not to Bailey's state of mind but rather to being the recipient of such generosity). My thanks also go to all students, scholars, staff, colleagues, with whom I've worked, and to my family. Being recognized at the ICA conference was wonderful, but getting all these messages, too... wow. Just... thank you! Steve

CFP for the new journal Mobile Media and Communication
by Richard.Ling＠telenor.com 12 Jun '12

12 Jun '12

Dear all, I am happy to announce the opening of our journal, Mobile Media and Communication. As the title suggests we are welcoming scholarly articles focusing on the different dimensions of mobile communication from a social and humanities perspective. Along with myself, the co-editors are Veronika Karnowski, Thilo von Pape and Steve Jones. The web link is. mmc.sagepub.com (web site) http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/mmc (submission site) A short desccription of the journal: Mobile Media & Communication is peer-reviewed forum for international, interdisciplinary academic research on the dynamic field of mobile media and communication. Mobile Media & Communicationdraw on a wide and continually renewed range of disciplines, engaging broadly in the concept of mobility itself. The journal embraces both quantitative and qualitative approaches to the study of mobility in communication, but above all aims toward state-of-the-art methodology. While the center of gravity lies in social sciences and humanities, the journal is open to research with technical, economic, and design aspects, provided they help to enlighten the social dimensions of mobile communication. Mobile Media & Communication examines the phenomenon of mobility in communication – that is, what is understood as mobile media and communication, but also emerging phenomena such as mobile and ubiquitous computing. Contributions may include, but are certainly not limited to, explorations of the following topics: * Mobile communication as an innovation, including the emergence of new usage forms, the negotiation of norms, and symbolic representation by producers and users * The interrelationship of this nearly ubiquitous technology and the users’ everyday lives * The embeddedness of mobile communication within social networks, and the mutual shaping of technology and social structure * Local cultures and forms of use of mobile communication * Mobile communication in developing countries * Cultural differences in mobile communication * Mobile communication and gender * Specific methodologies that address the mobile character of the phenomenon: ethnography, observation, network analysis, experience sampling, and other still emerging methods * Mobile learning and education. * Persuasion through mobile media in various domains * History of mobile media * Journalism and mobile media * Specific methodologies that address the mobile character of the phenomenon: ethnography, observation, network analysis, experience sampling, and other still emerging methods

Predatory journals
by Brabham, Daren C 11 Jun '12

11 Jun '12

Some of you who subscribe to CRTNet saw a discussion of predatory journals a week or two ago. In case you didn't see it, though, you should check out this list of predatory open access journals maintained by a U. Colorado-Denver librarian: http://metadata.posterous.com/83235355 I know every discipline has a different culture about this kind of thing, but with great online journals in our field that are truly free and open access (e.g., First Monday, International Journal of Internet Science, Game Studies), I honestly don't know why anyone would want to send their work to a pay-to-publish vanity press. db --- Daren C.
