survey of researchers interested in education & the internet
by Neil Selwyn 30 May '12

30 May '12

*Apologies for cross-posting * In conjunction with colleagues at Monash University, I have just started a study which aims to map the scope of academic research in the broad area of education and digital technology. If your research focuses on education (in any form) and the internet/digital media then we would be very grateful if you could take 10 minutes to complete the survey here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DTVB3PG Once we’ve gathered data from as many researchers as we can, then will produce (and publicise) an open access report in the autumn of 2012 summarizing the key findings. Many thanks Neil Selwyn Institute of Education – University of London @LNM_Monash

Study into fans' changing usage patterns of the sports media landscape
by Hugh Macdonald 29 May '12

29 May '12

Hi all, I'm a PhD candidate at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. I'm doing a comparative study of the use by sports fans of different types of sports media. For my methodology I'm using a survey. The first round of the survey was done in 2008, and over the past year I've been doing the second round. The reason I mention it here is that I need a few more responses for the second round and so I'm wondering if anyone is interested in sport, whether you'd like to take a few minutes to complete the survey for me. If so you can find it at http://newmediamogul.net/survey2/ Also, I'd love to hear from anyone who is doing similar research, or if you're interested in finding out more about the results of the comparative study, let me know. Cheers, and thanks a lot, Hugh. ---Hugh Macdonald Sessional Academic School of Media and Communication RMIT University Building 9.2.2, City Campus GPO Box 2476, Melbourne VIC, 3001 Tel:+61 4 0394 9574 Email: hugh.macdonald(a)rmit.edu.au (mailto:hugh.macdonald@rmit.edu.au) Web: www.rmit.edu.au/mediacommunication (http://www.rmit.edu.au/mediacommunication) CRICOS provider code: 00122A This message contains privileged and confidential information intended for the use only of the addressee named above. Call For Papers: Media, Fans, and The Sacred: Neoreligiosity Seeks Institution
by kelly boudreau 29 May '12

29 May '12

This might be of interest to some members on the list. -Kelly Call for paper proposals *The deadline for submissions for this issue is August 1st, 2012* Kinephanos’ fourth issue aims to explore the relationship between the sacred, the mythological motifs in modern popular fictions, and fandom. Our goal is to understand how the sacred, a pure human emotion, is disembodied from the ‘official’ religious institutions – at least in the Western countries – in order to be reinvested in secular cultural activities like ‘going to see a movie’ or ‘playing a video game’. Eliade wrote: “Movies, a ‘factory of dreams’, are highly inspired by countless mythological motifs, such as the struggle between the Hero and the Monster, battles and initiation ordeals, figures and exemplary patterns” (freely translated from *Le sacré et le profane*, 174). These mythological stories, highly symbolics, exist since ancient times. However, we would like to address the following issue: how the immersive experience in a work of fiction, now facilitated with various technological media forms (movies, videogames, television shows, etc.), changes our own relationship with the emotion of the sacred sparked in people’s life. We propose to identify this emotion with the term “neoreligiosity”. An English scholar of fan culture, Matt Hills, says in this regard: “Neoreligiosity implies that the proliferation of discourses of ‘cult’ within media fandom cannot be read as the ‘return’ of religion in a supposedly secularised culture” (*Fan Culture*, 2002, 119). Indeed, putting side by side the experience of the fan with the religious experience might seem appropriate. Due to a lack of words, needed by fans to describe their own affective experience with their favorite movies, the use of religious terminology seems logical, without calling upon religious institutions structure. Hills quotes Cavicchi: “(…) fans are aware of the parallels between religious devotion and their own devotion. At the very least, the discourse of religious conversion may provide fans with a model for describing the experience of becoming a fan” (2002, 118). This issue of Kinephanos proposes to explore how the sacred, the religiosity, and the neoreligiosity play out in modern popular fictions, and with those who experience it : the fans. Possible topics include, but are not limited to; - *Sacred and reappropriation (fans creations : fanfics, fanfilms, etc.); * - *Social network, sharing interests through Internet;* - *Reception, modern and contemporary myths (Star Wars, Matrix, Lord of the Rings, etc.);* - *Cinema and religion, displacement of the sacred;* - *Videogames, replayability as a tool of self-exploration (Mass Effect, Heavy Rain, morality system, etc.);* - *Revelation, epiphany, and the fan’s experience;* - *Cinema and videogames, mythological motifs between the lines; vestiges of the sacred;* - *Repetition viewing as a ritual, ‘cult fandoms’ and television shows (Star Trek, Doctor. Who, etc.);* - *Archetypal figures in the modern mythologies (Order and Chaos, Lovecrafts’s Great Old Ones, the hero’s journey (monomyth) in Hollywood movies, etc.).* While Kinephanos privileges publication of thematic issues, *we strongly encourage writers to submit articles exceeding the theme* which will be published in each issue. How to submit? Abstracts of 1000 words including the title, the topic and the object(s) that will be studied. Please include bibliographical references, your name, email address and your primary field of study. Send submissions (in French or English) by August 1st, 2012 to: marc.joly(a)umontreal.ca and vincent.mauger(a)arv.ulaval.ca Following our approbation sent to you by email (2-3 weeks later after deadline), please send us your completed article by December 1st, 2012. Editorial rules Kinephanos is a peer-reviewed Web journal. Each article is evaluated by double-blind peer review. Kinephanos does not retain exclusive rights of published texts. However, material submitted must not have been previously published elsewhere. Future versions of the texts published in other periodicals must reference Kinephanos as its original source. Production demands All texts must be written in MLA style. 6,000 words maximum (excluding references but including endnotes) with 1.5 spacing, Times New Roman fonts 12pt, footnotes must be inserted manually in the text as follow : … (1), references must be within the text as follow (Jenkins 2000, 134), a bibliography with all your references, and 5 keywords at the end of the text. For the editorial guidelines, refer to the section Editorial Guidelines<http://www.kinephanos.ca/politique-editoriale/> . *Kinephanos accepts articles in French and in English ** * *****This issue edited by Marc Joly-Corcoran and Vincent Mauger* Kinephanos is a bilingual web-based journal. book announcement - The MoveOn Effect
by Dave Karpf 29 May '12

29 May '12

Dear AoIR members, I'm excited to announce the publication of my first book, *The MoveOn Effect: The Unexpected Transformation of American Political Advocacy*, by Oxford University Press. The book details internet-driven changes at the organizational layer of American politics. It is a far-more-extensive version of the talk I gave at IR 12.0 in Seattle last October. Regards, Dave Karpf ---- Book Description The Internet is facilitating a generational transition within America's advocacy group system. New "netroots" political associations have arisen in the past decade and play an increasingly prominent role in citizen political mobilization. At the same time, the organizations that mediate citizen political engagement and sustained collective action are changing. They rely upon modified staff structures and work routines. They employ novel strategies and tactical repertoires. Rather than "organizing without organizations," the new media environment has given rise to "organizing through different organizations." The MoveOn Effect provides a richly detailed analysis of this disruptive transformation. It highlights changes in membership and fundraising regimes - established industrial patterns of supporter interaction and revenue streams - that were pioneered by MoveOn.org and have spread broadly within the advocacy system. Through interviews, content analysis, and direct observation of the leading netroots organizations, the book offers fresh insights into 21st century political organizing. The book highlights important variations among the new organizations - including internet-mediated issue generalists like MoveOn, community blogs like DailyKos.com, and neo-federated groups like DemocracyforAmerica.com. It also explores a wider set of netroots infrastructure organizations that provide supporting services to membership-based advocacy associations. The rise of the political netroots has had a distinctly partisan character: conservatives have repeatedly tried and failed to build equivalents to the organizations and infrastructure of the progressive netroots. The MoveOn Effect investigates these efforts, as well as the late-forming Tea Party movement, and introduces the theory of Outparty Innovation Incentives as an explanation for the partisan adoption of political technology. Written by a political scientist who is also a longtime political organizer, The MoveOn Effect offers a widely-accessible account of the Internet's impact on American politics. Operating at the intersection of practitioner and academic knowledge-traditions, Karpf provides a reassessment of many longstanding claims about new media and citizen political engagement. Jacket Reviews "Amidst all the attention to social media, the transformation of political organization is still poorly understood. Drawing on his activist and academic experience, David Karpf not only claims - but demonstrates - that the real impact of the new media environment comes not through politics without organizations but from new forms of organization. This engagingly written book will tell both activists and academics how it is being done."--Sidney Tarrow, Cornell University, author of Power in Movement "David Karpf's deep understanding of his subject matter is evident on every page of this book: I ran MoveOn, and there are things in here even I didn't know about us. For anyone who wants to understand how new organizational models are changing the advocacy world and politics more generally, The MoveOn Effect is indispensable."--Eli Pariser, Board President, MoveOn "This book provides a thorough and insightful look at the organizational layer of political advocacy in the digital media age. Karpf dives deftly into the depths of online politics in a way that is informed theoretically as well as rich in the details of real political advocacy. He advances a number of new concepts and models for understanding contemporary politics."--Bruce Bimber, Professor of Political Science and Communication, University of California-Santa Barbara Click here for more detail on the book:http://bit.ly/JKHjbe Click here for more detail on the book series and forthcoming titles:http://bit.ly/eVTQPa Available on Amazon: http://amzn.to/JcsPTY -- Dave Karpf, PhD Assistant Professor Journalism and Media Studies Department School of Communication and Information Rutgers University, New Brunswick www.davidkarpf.com davekarpf(a)gmail.com Preorder my book, *The MoveOn Effect: The Unexpected Transformation of American Political Advocacy<http://www.amazon.com/The-MoveOn-Effect-Unexpected-Transformation/dp/019989…> *(May 30, 2012: Oxford University Press) -- Dave Karpf, PhD Assistant Professor Journalism and Media Studies Department School of Communication and Information Rutgers University, New Brunswick www.davidkarpf.com davekarpf(a)gmail.com Preorder my book, *The MoveOn Effect: The Unexpected Transformation of American Political Advocacy<http://www.amazon.com/The-MoveOn-Effect-Unexpected-Transformation/dp/019989…> *(May 30, 2012: Oxford University Press)

Description: In what ways do innovations in media require new research approaches? This one-day workshop welcomes all PhD- and post-doctoral researchers dealing with new approaches to researching users, producers and texts arising from Media Innovations. Media Studies is an interdisciplinary field, traditionally combining approaches primarily from the humanities and the social sciences, and related quantitative and qualitative methods such as audience research, ethnographic studies, case studies, discourse, content and textual analysis. However, innovations in media technologies and changing modes of usage and engagement bring about transformation of the media sector. These in turn result in the integration of additional approaches to the interdisciplinary palette, such as Information and Communication Technology and Innovation Studies; or, in the broadening of perspectives related to particular methods, such as ethnography. These developments highlight the importance of insight into new business models, algorithmic manipulation and the availability of Big Data, and additional ethical challenges in new media environments. These approaches both enrich the study of media and give rise to additional questions relating to how best to deal with empirical and theoretical approaches to research. This workshop will address methodological and ethical questions of relevance to the study of media innovations, and welcomes the submission of papers dealing with these questions as they relate to the following topics: • Innovation and Media Innovation as Concepts; • Audiences and Users of Media Innovations; • Questions of privacy, intervention and critical approaches in the context of Media Innovations; • Power and Control in Media Innovations; • Control and manipulation of personal data in the context of Media Innovations: • Media Institutions, Industries and Producers as they relate to Media Innovations; • Approaches to researching New Business Models arising from Media Innovations; • Approaches to researching innovations in Media Texts; • Approaches to researching innovations in Media Technology; • Approaches to understanding the technological composition and format of Media Objects; and • Questions relating to the impact of Media Innovations for the Public Sphere. casual lecturer position in Online Research Methods (Australian National University)
by Robert Ackland 28 May '12

28 May '12

Dear List, I am looking to hire a casual lecturer who can co-teach a course in online research methods in the Master of Social Research (MSR) at the Australian National University in Canberra (DEMO8087 - Online Research Methods - http://studyat.anu.edu.au/courses/DEMO8087;details.html) The course is compulsory in the successful Social Science of the Internet specialisation of the MSR (http://adsri.anu.edu.au/graduate-study/ssi) and it also attracts students from other MSR specialisations and ANU programs. I expect we will have 15-20 students. The course is running in Second semester this year, which commences 23 July and runs for 13 weeks (with two weeks teaching break in middle). I am specifically looking for someone who can teach the following topics: - online interviews - online focus groups - online field research (e.g. virtual ethnography) If the person can also teach about online surveys, that would be great (but not essential). I envisage the teaching would be for a minimum of 4 weeks, but up to 6-7 weeks i.e. half of the course. The timing of the block of teaching is flexible i.e. could be first or second half of semester. I will continue to be course coordinator (and deal with student administration etc.), and I'll be teaching the other half of the course, which will be on social media network analysis. But otherwise, the casual lecturer will have quite a bit of flexibility regarding mode of teaching, assessment etc. The expected qualifications for the casual lecturer are PhD in related area and experience using qualitative online research methods. My preference is for someone who can teach in-person in Canberra, but for an exceptional candidate I'd be willing to investigate the possibility of teaching from off-site (e.g. via skype). -- Dr Robert Ackland Associate Professor, Australian Demographic and Social Research Institute, The Australian National University Coordinator, Master of Social Research e-mail: robert.ackland(a)anu.edu.au homepage: https://researchers.anu.edu.au/researchers/ackland-rj project: http://voson.anu.edu.au ph./fax: +61 2 6125 0312/+61 2 6125 2992 Information about the Master of Social Research (Social Science of the Internet specialisation): http://adsri.anu.edu.au/graduate-study/msr CRICOS No: 061772F --
