****** Call for Papers (for the full text of this call please see: http://www.itu.dk/people/irsh/THCIcfp.pdf) ****** A special issue of Human-Computer Interaction "Transnational HCI: Humans, Computers and Interactions Considered Globally" Deadline for proposals: December 1, 2011 Special issue editors: Irina Shklovski IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark Janet Vertesi Princeton University, USA Silvia Lindtner University of California, Irvine, USA Lucy Suchman Lancaster University, UK HCI researchers are increasingly interested in understanding the role of technology in relation to global processes. ICT4D (Information and Communication Technologies for Development), emerging markets, new forms of mobility, and the internationalization of organizations dominate contemporary conversations about information and communication technology. Whether in academia or industry, all agree that technology design and research today must consider the role these globalizing processes play in the way people collaborate, interact and exchange ideas across national and cultural boundaries. The focus of this special issue is on the relations between transnational processes and technology practice, design and research. We are especially interested in characterizing the theoretical, methodological, and empirical challenges of our work in transnational settings in a way that will be useful for future research and design in this area. For example, what analytical and methodological frames from within the HCI tradition offer new approaches to this empirical context, and which of our existing frames require reconsideration? How does "Transnational HCI" engage with or challenge ICT4D or Reflexive HCI? Thinking interdisciplinarily, what can the broader HCI community learn by drawing on work in other disciplines, such as information studies, anthropology, media and cultural studies, communications, science and technology studies? How can HCI contribute a novel perspective on transnationalism and technology to those disciplines as well? We encourage papers that represent a variety of disciplinary perspectives and analytical approaches. True to the "transnational" perspective, submissions do not have to be limited to "developing world" sites. Examples of topics that fall into the scope of this special issue include but are not limited to: . The network society: global flows, frictions and politics in local-global technology use . Cross-cultural collaboration and culture as encounter . Communication and collaboration across boundaries (not just the nation-state) . Diaspora communities, the politics of international migration, and technology . Use of information and communication technologies in censorship state zones . The role of information and communication technologies in reconfiguring "the local" . Political, local and translocal in new technological sites . Technology design and use in constructing, reproducing, or enforcing notions of global connectedness or local community . The role of technology in preserving versus undermining cultural identity . Mobility and circulation in constructing or moving between the local and the global . Methods for analysis and design in complex, hybrid, or virtual transnational spaces . The relationship between the researcher, designer and user in transnational collaborative projects This special issue follows upon two successful workshops: the Ubicomp 2010 workshop "Transnational Times" organized by Shklovski, Lindtner, Vertesi, and Dourish, and the CHI 2011 workshop "Transnational HCI" organized by Vertesi, Lindtner and Shklovski. *Important Dates* Deadline for proposals: December 1, 2011 Response to authors: January 5, 2012 Full papers due: April 2, 2012 Reviews to authors: July 16, 2012 Revised papers due: October 15, 2012 Reviews to authors: February 15, 2013 Final papers due: April 1, 2013 Submission of proposals Proposals should be at least 1000 words and provide a clear indication of what the paper will be about. scraping google discussion groups?

Has anybody successfully scraped a Google discussion group? I found a script online, but it's thrown off by the fact you now have to login to view any groups. Google is getting squirrely about spammers scraping their data, so it may be a big roadblock. I'm looking at authorization with the Google PHP lib, but I'm not sure it will get me to groups, it all seems app-focused (so if you want to add items to a Google calendar for instance). Tenure-Track Positions in Media, Technology, and Society The Department of Communication Studies at Northwestern University seeks to hire for two tenure-track appointments in media, technology, and society; the appointments will begin September 1, 2012. Both appointments will be at the level of assistant professor. The successful candidates will be expected to publish innovative research, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and perform professional service commensurate with rank. Critical Writing on FOSS and Wikipedia

Dear Fellow Aoiristas! I have a master student who is contemplating doing an MA Thesis on the comparative political economy of FOSS and Wikipedia. She definitely wants to approach the topic through a Marxist lens so I underscore the salience of "political economy" here. My first take on her proposal is that she is awfully naive about the incipient "info communism" of Wiikipedia but really needs some good critical empirical work to lift the histomat scales from her eyes. IR-12: Just before you arrive to Seattle

Hello AoIRers! We are few days away from the IR-12 conference in Seattle, and very excited to host IR-12 in Seattle. Here is some relevant information, just before you pack your suitcases and hop on a plane. If you have other questions, don't hesitate to contact me. REGISTRATION The registration will be open on a limited basis on Monday, October 10 from 12 pm to 5 pm to process folks who arrive early for the workshops. If you get into town during the day on Monday, drop in and pick up your bag. Registration is in the courtyard foyer (which is situated on the B level of the hotel). Tuesday, October 11, the registration desk will open at 7:00 am. Yes, Yes, you read it correctly!!! We will start at 9:00 sharp, so we would like to process everyone before the Conference Opening. KEY EVENTS AND FOOD We decided to have one location (The courtyard foyer) as the main location of gathering in the conference. All the social and key events are located there. This includes the book exhibits, the kissing booth, keynote talks, welcome event, ignite talks, food and beverages during the conference and the Tuesday reception (note that we don't have a reception on Wednesday). Note that the paper sessions, roundtables and panels are all located on the third and fourth floors of the hotel. All Lunch are on your own. MODERATORS AND PRESENTERS Moderators: there is a sheet with instructions that can be taken from the registration desk. Also, we will leave a copy in each one of the rooms. Presenters: All rooms have a projector, and we hope to have a laptop for each room. However, it is recommended that you bring your own laptop for your talk. RECEPTION There is an opening reception on Tuesday, October 11, starting at 6 pm. The reception is sponsored by the department of Communication at University of Illinois at Chicago and the department of Communication and University of Washington. INTERNET Yes, we will have (wired and wireless) internet connections available for those of you with your own laptops during the conference but also in your room in the hotel (free of charge). We are also preparing a downloadable version with all abstracts - this will only be an online version. In order to understand better the view of the Wikiepedia users I compiled a survey. Hello everyone, Here's a problem of literary work in the Internet age. After verifying that Julie Powell's salon.com blog, the Julie / Julia Project was still online in August, I assigned it to my graduate class along with the book that came out of it, and the movie. Now? The blog is gone. It's not in the wayback machine. My RA has been digging around and can only confirn that it is gone, taken down deliberately. Is there any other lurking corner of the Internet in which this blog might still be hiding? This is actually a pretty acute and serious research and pedagogical question, and I would really appreciate any insight any of you might offer. Long time reader, first time poster ... The Department of Communication at North Carolina State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in digital media. The candidate will have an earned doctorate by August 2012 in Communication or a related field (humanities, social sciences, or interdisciplinary). The successful candidate will have an established record of research in digital media, a commitment to the integration of theory and practice, and a commitment to multidisciplinary scholarship. Possible areas of expertise within digital media include, but are not limited to, game studies; mobile communication; locative media; social and public media; digital aesthetics; social networks; digital culture; digital media infrastructure, ownership, and policy; digital media access; new digital research methods; and surveillance, privacy and control. The specific sub-area of practice is less important than a commitment to understanding and exploring digital media as an arena for creative expression, communication, power, and/or social change.
