October 20, 2011 Dear AoIR Colleagues, You have been selected to participate in a web-based survey to assess the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and how this use relates to stress and health among employed adults 19 and older. Your help in this study is important to help us understand how technology can positively or negatively affect the health and well-being of individuals who use technology in their jobs. The survey should only take you approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. Your participation is entirely voluntary; none of your responses can be traced back to you. The survey is being conducted by doctoral students in the Departments of Sociology and Health Services Administration and the School of Public Health as partial fulfillment of course requirements at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. We would greatly appreciate your taking the time necessary to complete the online survey. It would also be helpful to the success of this study if you would consider FORWARDING THIS EMAIL TO OTHER PEOPLE IN YOUR SOCIAL NETWORKS so that they could potentially participate in this study. To take the survey, click on the link below. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/UAB-SOC-ICT-USE-STUDY If you have any questions regarding this survey, please feel free to contact us at uab.tech.work(a)gmail.com or contact the principal investigator, Shelia R. CFP: Network Archaeology Conference (April 20-21, 2012), deadline Nov 29
by Nicole Starosielski 26 Oct '11

26 Oct '11

*Network Archaeology* Conference at Miami University, Oxford OH April 20-21, 2012 Call for Papers (submissions due November 29, 2011) This conference will bring together scholars and practitioners to explore the resonances between digital networks and “older” (perhaps still emergent) systems of circulation; from roads to cables, from letter-writing networks to digital ink. Drawing on recent research in media archaeology, we see network archaeology as a method for re-orienting the temporality and spatiality of network studies. Network archaeology might pay attention to the history of distribution technologies, location and control of geographical resources, the emergence of circulatory models, proximity and morphology, network politics and power, and the transmission properties of media. What can we learn about contemporary cultural production and circulation from the examination of network histories? How can we conceptualize the polychronic developments of networks, including their growth, adaptation, and resistances? How might the concept of network archaeology help to re-envision and forge new paths of interdisciplinary research, collaboration, and scholarship? The conference will trace continuities and disjunctures between a variety of networks, including telecommunication networks, distribution systems for both digital and non-digital texts, transportation routes, media storage (libraries, databases, e-archiving), electrical grids, radio and television broadcast networks, the internet, and surveillance networks. We seek to address not only the technological, institutional, and geopolitical histories of networks, but also their cultural and experiential dimensions, extending to encompass the histories of network poetics and practice. The proceeds of the conference will form the basis for a substantial publication on Network Archaeology. This conference is organized by the Miami University Humanities Center and is the final event in a year-long series entitled “Networked Environments: Interrogating the Democratization of Media.” It is a companion to our Fall 2011 symposium, “Networks and Power,” on November 17-18th featuring panels, interventions, and keynote presentations by Wendy Chun (Brown University) and Lisa Parks (UC Santa Barbara), that interrogate the interrelationships between networked environments, both old and new, and varied forms of power. The “Networked Environments” series, involving an interdisciplinary group of ten humanities scholars, seeks to show how the network dynamics so crucial to contemporary political developments have deep and perhaps unexpected roots in the histories of earlier forms of information production and circulation. We welcome presentations of academic research and artistic projects on contemporary and historical network studies. Please send abstracts of 250 words and a short bio to cris cheek (cheekc(a)muohio.edu) and Nicole Starosielski (nicole.starosielski(a)muohio.edu) by November 29, 2011. Keynote speakers include: Lisa Gitelman, Associate Professor of Media and English at New York University, and author of *Scripts, Grooves, and Writing Machines: Representing Technology in the Edison Era* (2000), *New Media, 1740-1915*(2004), and *Always Already New: Media, History, and the Data of Culture* (2008). Richard R. John, Professor of Journalism at Columbia University, and author of *Spreading the News: The American Postal System from Franklin to Morse*(1995) and *Network Nation: Inventing American Telecommunications* (2010). Alan Liu, Professor of English at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and author of *The Laws of Cool: Knowledge Work and the Culture of Information* (2004) and *Local Transcendence: Essays on Postmodern Historicism and the Database *(2008). Jussi Parikka, Reader in Media & Design at Winchester School of Art (University of Southampton), and author of *Digital Contagions: A Media Archaeology of Computer Viruses* (2007), *Insect Media: An Archaeology of Animals and Technology *(2010), and *Media Archaeology: Approaches, Applications, Implications *(2011).

FYI............Alex Kuskis Centennial Reflections: Marshall McLuhan's Legacy and Media Studies Marshall McLuhan's is best known for his well-known piercing and provocative statements such as our world has effectively become a "global village" and that the medium is the message/massage. In celebration of his trailblazing work, several conferences are being held around the world on how McLuhan's writings have informed and influenced media studies. The *American Communication Journal (ACJ) *welcomes original submissions for a special issue on Marshall McLuhan's legacy and thought that deal with this general question: How has McLuhan's legacy influenced media studies, particularly our understanding of the impact of new media on society? *ACJ* Editors seek manuscripts that tackle this question from diverse methodologies and perspectives. While we are especially interested in papers that have been presented in recent conferences about McLuhan, all submissions will be peer-reviewed. For any inquiries about potential submissions, please contact Prof. Aziz Douai (azizdouai(a)gmail.com) Deadline for Submission is November 30th, 2011. Please send your submissions to Anita McDaniel [mcdaniela(a)uncw.edu] and Aziz Douai [azizdouai(a)gmail.com] with the subject line [*ACJ* Special Issue: McLuhan]. About *ACJ*: ACJ is the official peer-reviewed journal of the American Communication Association. Although *ACJ* publishes traditional research regularly, *ACJ* actively seeks articles, essays and reports that make use of hypertext, audio, video and PowerPoint-features characteristic of the media rich environment of the Internet. *ACJ* has been published online since 1999 [ac-journal.org] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------- Aziz Douai, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Faculty of Social Science and Humanities University of Ontario Institute of Technology 55 Bond Street East Oshawa, ON L1G 0A5 Tel: 905.721.8668, ext. 3790 Fax: 905.721.3372 E-mail: aziz.douai(a)uoit.ca ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------- "A popular government without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a prologue to a farce or a tragedy, or perhaps both." Study on International Reporters working across Africa
by Paulo Nuno Vicente 26 Oct '11

26 Oct '11

Dear colleagues, In the scope of a study on the ongoing transformations in international news reporting I'm building an e-mail contact list of news people (professional correspondents, freelancers, citizen journalists, etc) working across Africa. I would like to build a comprehensive database, so that an online survey can be launched in the beginning of 2012. In the next stage, I will be doing some in-depth interviews and spending some weeks in the field, sharing their daily routines. Do you have any direct and/or indirect contact that can help this endeavour? Please accept my very best regards, Paulo Nuno Vicente journalist | documentarian | phd student http://digital-storytelling.net/ +351 96 2056247
