***Apologies for cross-postings*** Mobile Communication, Community and Locative Media Practices: From the Everyday to the Revolutionary 2012 International Communication Association (ICA) Pre-conference Workshop May 23 – 24, 2012, Phoenix AZ, USA Conference website: http://sociomobile.org/mobile2012/ Keynote Speaker: Mimi Sheller (Drexel University, USA) Mobile and location-based networked interactions permeate our world. We no longer enter the Internet--we carry it with us. We experience it while moving through physical spaces. Smart phones, GPS receivers, and RFID tags are only a few examples of location-aware mobile technologies that mediate our interaction with networked spaces and the people in them. Increasingly, our physical location determines the types of information with which we interact, and the people and things we find around us. These new kinds of networked interactions manifest in everyday social practices that are supported by the use of mobile technologies, such as participation in location-based mobile games and social networks, engagement with location-based services, development of mobile annotation projects, and social mapping, just to name a few. The engagement with these practices has important implications for identity construction, our sense of privacy, our notions of place and space, civic and political participation, building community, policy making, as well as cultural production and consumption in everyday life. This preconference will provide a venue for innovative scholars from around the world who are doing research in exploring how we experience our locally-rooted mobile networked interactions and mobile communication’s impact on community. It will give them a chance to gather and discuss the challenges that this shift in the use of both mobile phones and the Internet poses not only for the users but for those doing research on mobile communication. We welcome abstracts that will focus on the following areas: § Mobile communication and location awareness in everyday life practices; § New urban spatialities developed with mobile gaming and locative social media; definitions of “community” in a mobile mediated context § Privacy and surveillance issues as they relate to location-based social networks; § Identity and spatial construction through locative media art / performance design and its impact on communities; § Civic engagement and political participation through mobile social media, new mapping practices and location-aware technologies; § Learning and education potentials of mobile and location-based media; The two-day preconference will be comprised of formal panel presentations, one keynote speaker, opportunities for informal discussions, and time for networking. archival/search tools for Sina and Weibo?

Hi all, I have a student who is interested in studying how Chinese microblogs compared to traditional media outlets in covering the July 23 train accident in Wenzhou. She's been looking at Sina and Weibo, and having trouble getting any kind of helpful search results -- the best she's been able to do is trace back individual users who were know to have posted about it from the present back to late July. I've used Twapper Keeper to get a targeted archive of old tweets, and I'm wondering if anybody knows of any similar third-party tools for Sina and/or Weibo. Dear AoIRists, with the usual apologies for cross-posting: On behalf of the CATaC (Cultural Attitudes towards Technology and Communication) Organizing Committee, I am very pleased to pass on to you the first CFP for CATaC¹12: Beyond the digital/cultural divide: in/visibility and new media. The biennial CATaC conference series, begun in 1998, has become a premier international forum for current research on the complex interactions between culturally-variable norms, practices, and communication preferences, and interaction with the design, implementation and use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Our 2012 conference, as the title suggests, begins with the recognition that the ongoing issues and challenges clustering around digital divides often involving mutually reinforcing cultural divides extends beyond classic and stubborn problems of access to new media and communication technologies. For example, matters of representation come into play, issuing in a cluster of questions: Whose images and words are seen/presented/promoted and whose aren't? And why? If activists are using new media to represent realities of, say, oppressed indigenous people in a given country, is this better than no visibility at all, even if the people in question do not have access or skills to present themselves as subjects? In particular: Local and indigenous HCI/ID is about making visible the semiotic scripts and political processes of meaning construction that shape the process of technology design and knowledge representation from a sociotechnical perspective. Making visible these scripts enables the assessment of the value of these tools and frameworks from indigenous and/or local perspectives. Key concerns here are (1) to examine the meaning and validity of democratic values that drive participatory design as a discipline, and (2) to question 'exported' representations of what constitutes good usability and user experience. And: How do new practices of cloaking messages in otherwise public or semi-public media; for example, the strategies of online steganography work to create intentional invisibility in otherwise visible spaces? Are there important culturally-variable elements in these practices that, when brought to the foreground, help illuminate and clarify them in new ways? Finally: What are the role(s) of (culturally) diverse understandings and representations of gender in structuring the frameworks and practices of design and implementation. How do these roles foster the visibility of some vis-à-vis the invisibility of ³others² (in Levinas¹ sense, in particular)? Additional submissions are encouraged that address further conference points of emphasis: Theoretical and practical approaches to analyzing ³culture² New layers of imaging and texting interactions fostering and/or threatening cultural diversity Impact of mobile technologies on privacy and surveillance Gender, sexuality and identity issues in social networks Cultural diversity in e-learning and/or m-learning Culturally-variable approaches to online identity management/creation, privacy, trust Copyright and intellectual property rights recent developments, culturally-variable future directions? Culturally-variable responses to commodification in online environments Both short (3-5 pages) and long (10-15 pages) original papers are sought for presentation. Digital tools like websites, blogs or social networking sites, among others, are reshaping communicational dynamics and mobilising strategies. This panel calls for papers aiming at expanding our knowledge on the changes in mobilisation processes that are taking place as a consequence of the spread of internet mediated communication. We invite paper proposals addressing any of the following questions: Can we characterize online mobilization as comprising considerably different processes from those used in more traditional channels? What can we learn from differences between online mobilisation strategies by different type of actors in multiple contexts? What are the factors explaining the use of new media for political mobilisation? The Egyptian government response was to have the internet and mobile networks completely shut down. This was, however, not the end of the role that social media ideas played in the events that followed. People inside and outside of Egypt collaborated to re-create the missing networks using the still-available technologies of landlines, dial-up and ham radio. This paper argues that this use of pre-digital technologies to form the kinds of infrastructure afforded by modern social technologies is evidence of a radical change in people’s perceptions of their world and its connectedness. Social media has constituted a real change that goes beyond specific technologies. This flies in the face of many sceptical critics who argue that new technologies only reinforce old practices and social structures. This view of the effects of social media presents a challenge to its study. Technological studies and formal analyses of relationships inscribed in social networks will never be able to capture fully the way people understand and interact with these technologically-enabled structures. In this paper, I use the internet shutdown in Egypt to raise issues that I believe need to be considered in analysing the influence of social media on social movements. I discuss how existing models need to become hybridic, heterogeneous and responsive to the grassroots appropriation of technology, especially the future creation of alternatives to the corporate internet. In conclusion, I analyse the phrase 'Egypts Facebook Youth' as the emblem of social media's impact.
