Invitation to participate in a survey from Daria Heinemann
by Daria S Heinemann 15 Oct '11

15 Oct '11

Dear colleagues, I am conducting a study about instructor opinions of student cheating behavior in higher education. I have developed an online survey that involves looking at your perceptions, as an instructor, regarding the nature and frequency of cheating behaviors as well as the reasons you think students engage in these behaviors in both online and face-to-face classrooms. It is my hope that this study will enhance our understanding of student misbehavior issues and help course designers tailor course content to reduce the opportunities for cheating. In order to participate, you must have experience teaching in a higher education institution (have taught at least one course in the past and posted final grades), and must have taught at least one course at such an institution since August 2010. First time instructors are excluded from this study. If you fit the criteria, I would like to ask for your participation by taking the survey that you will find at this link [ (Link to the Survey ]. This study is entirely voluntary, so you may withdraw at any time. Your responses will be kept confidential. There is no compensation for your participation. Typical time commitment is about 15-20 minutes (there are 32 questions to answer). If you have colleagues who may be interested in taking this survey, please share this link with them. If you have any questions, please contact me at ec9145(a)wayne.edu or via phone at 517-381-2242. I appreciate your help and thank you in advance for your time and your participation, Daria S. Heinemann (Link to the Survey or to cut and paste: https://qtrial.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_9R04eAQfIDCUu0I)

Maryland Cyber Challenge & Conference 21-22 Oct 2011
by Richard Forno 15 Oct '11

15 Oct '11

For anyone in the DC/VA/MD area next weekend who's interested, I'm co-chairing the Maryland Cyber Challenge and Conference (MDC3) on 21-22 October 2011 in Baltimore, MD. The Cyber Challenge pits high school, college, and professional teams in a series of practical cyber wargames. After two qualifyer rounds last month, we're down to 8 teams in each division that will compete in-person for the finals. First and second place student teams receive scholarship prizes provided by the NSA ($5K/$2K), and members of the winning professional teams receive cash prizes $2K/$1K). The two-day Conference covers a wide array of topics of interest to professional & general audiences alike with special sessions designed to encourage students to pursue education & careers in the scientific and technical fields....among them, quite obviously, cybersecurity. For those curious, feel free to check out www.mdc3.org for details and the program agenda. (Yes, this is why I kept ducking out of #ir12 for morning conference calls this week) -- rick --- Richard F. Forno, Ph.D. Graduate Program Director, Cybersecurity University of Maryland Baltimore County http://www.umbc.edu/cyber Co-Chair, Maryland Cyber Challenge & Conference (MDC3)

Thank you
by Tom Boellstorff 15 Oct '11

I'd like to say a quick "thank you" to all of the organizers and participants at AoIR. It was my first time attending and I had a wonderful time. I'm sending this from Princeton where I'm still at the workshop that necessitated me missing the last day of the conference; I'll look forward to hearing about everything that happened my day. I had so much fun doing my keynote and learned a lot from the great feedback I received. Thank you all - such an amazing group! All the best, Tom Boellstorff

How to record online video interviews (audio and video)?
by Janet Salmons, Ph.D. 14 Oct '11

14 Oct '11

Karin, Thanks for the shout out for Online Interviews in Real Time ;-) You mentioned Adobe Connect as one of your options. Connect has recording capability built in. It allows you to view the recording in Connect or to save the recording in other formats. >From my view, the fewer kinds of software etc.you use, the fewer opportunities for something to go wrong-- so using Connect presents less risk than Skype with another service for recording. You'll have less to worry about when you want to focus on the interview itself. If you have a conference call service you can enter it into your "audio profile" in Connect and use the phone for audio, or you can use VOIP. Connect also allows you (or the research participants) to share other documents, images or digital artifacts. If you are not using those tools you can just use the camera pods in the size you like. All of that said, you can find a number of free Skype recording tools, such as Vodburner. I'd be happy to communicate with you off-list if you have more questions: jsalmons<at>vision2lead.com. Readings on Communication and Community
by Gerald Voorhees 14 Oct '11

14 Oct '11

I'm working with a grad student who is interested in studying communication practices/norms as barriers to inclusion in virtual communities. While this topic abutts my own interests, it is not my area of expertise. I've already turned him toward Nancy Baym's _Tune In, Log On_ and Lynn Cherny's _Conversation and Community_, as well as some more foundational work in socio-linguistics, speech communities and ethnography of speaking (e.g. Hymes, Gumperz, Philipsen). I'd appreciate any suggestions of relevant work that might inform his research. Scholarship from a critical/rhetorical perspective is particularly desirable. Thanks and best regards, Gerald Gerald Voorhees, PhD Assistant Professor of Media and Cultural Studies Speech Communication/New Media Communication Oregon State University

IPSA - paper proposal Technology and Higher Education: The Role of the Internet
by Monica Zuccarini 14 Oct '11

14 Oct '11

Dear colleagues, we invite you to submit your paper proposals to our panel for the International Political Science Association (IPSA) World Congress. *LAST DEADLINE for paper proposals: 17 October 2011* ** *"Technology and Higher Education: The Role of the Internet" * RC11: Science and Politics http://www.ipsa.org/my-ipsa/events/madrid2012/panel/technology-and-higher-e… *Chair*: Mauro Calise (University of Naples Federico II, IPSA Portal Editor) *Co-Chair*: Derrick Cogburn (American University, COTELCO) *Discussants*: Michael Brintnall (APSA Executive Director) *The modern information and communication technologies promise to improve the quality, flexibility and effectiveness of higher education. Students are more and more computer and IT literate and, for their part, universities are realizing that the new technologies are one of the most important springboards for innovation.
The introduction of new technologies into teaching is progressing along similar lines to those seen in other fields some years before. One example is that of libraries and the way they organize the output of the knowledge industry. The progressive integration of new multi-media technologies with teaching methodologies is creating an environment of virtual knowledge-sharing through the interconnection of learning and teaching spaces.
Following these considerations, this panel looks into the new methodologies and new tools used to study and research online, it investigates how computers and the Web can be used to improve student learning and skills development, how the Internet can enhance traditional teaching and learning methods, how scientists design and implement the innovations, looks at experiences and innovative projects in the universities, and more generally at the cutting-edge approaches and techniques that can be applied in social sciences.
Case studies, applications of new methodologies and tools are welcome.* *LAST DEADLINE for paper proposals: 17 October 2011* Please use the IPSA internet in order to submit your paper proposals: http://www.ipsa.org/events/congress/madrid2012/submit-abstractpaper-proposal Anyone can submit an abstract. You do not need to be a member of IPSA in order to submit your abstract. In case you have problems, you could contact directly the Convenor (Monica Zuccarini: zuccarini(a)gmail.com) *Apologies for cross-posting*

post-IR12 thank you
by Steve Jones 14 Oct '11

14 Oct '11

I would like to thank all those who made IR12 a terrific conference and experience. In particular I want to thank Karine Nahon, her colleagues, staff and students in the University of Washington Communication Department, particularly Beth Patin and Lassana Magassa, and the UW volunteers generally. I would also like to thank Lori Kendall, reviewers and presenters for putting together an excellent program, and for continuing the tradition of trying to do things differently at AoIR events. In that light I particularly want to thank Ignite talk participants and all those who use AoIR as a chance to try to do something different, something you can't do at traditional disciplinary conferences. Such things take time and effort, of course (and in many cases bravery) and they may not “count” in ways that traditional disciplinary activities, such as giving a paper, do, but they are part of what makes AoIR truly valuable, because they inspire creativity, innovation and new ideas. AoIR conferences continue to be intellectually stimulating and also supportive, warm, anti-elitist and fun, so allow me to also thank everyone who has been a conference attendee, everyone who has been a member, everyone who has served AoIR in some capacity, or who has otherwise supported the glorious mix of people and ideas that makes AoIR so special. This is the only conference I leave with such a sense of sadness that it’s over, and such a sense of anticipation for the next one. With gratitude, Steve
