Reminder! CFP Local and Mobile conference 2012
by Irina Shklovski 14 Oct '11

14 Oct '11

***This is a reminder that the call for paper for the Local and Mobile conference ends on October 30th, 2011. Please submit your abstract before the deadline via our website below.*** * Local and mobile: Linking mobilities, mobile communication and locative media* a joint international conference of the Pan-American Mobilities Network and the Cosmobilities Network, and the 3rd annual research symposium of the Communication, Rhetoric and Digital Media (CRDM) program at NCSU. *Conference website and abstract submission: *http://crdm.chass.ncsu.edu/mobilities/ *Invited keynote speakers:* · Paul Dourish (University of California, Irvine) · Rich Ling (IT University of Copenhagen) · Teri Rueb (University of Buffalo, SUNNY) Mobilities has become an important framework to understand and analyze contemporary social, spatial, economic and political practices. Being interdisciplinary in its nature, Mobilities focuses on the systematic movement of people, goods and information that “travel” around the world in rates much higher (or much slower) than before. As such, mobility studies challenge traditional scholarship that often ignores the social dimensions of mobility, overlooking how travel, movement, and communication and transportation networks help to constitute modern societies and communities. Mobility has always been critical for the creation of social networks and to the development of connections to places. In addition, Mobilities contributes to study of the technological, social and cultural developments in transportation, border control, mobile communication, “intelligent” infrastructure, surveillance. While mobility is an important framework to understand contemporary society, the pervasiveness of location-aware technology has made it possible to locate ourselves and be networked within patterns of mobility. As user generated maps and location-aware mobile devices become commonplace, we experience a shift in the way we connect to the internet and move through space. Networked interactions permeate our world. We no longer enter the internet--we carry it with us. We experience it while moving through physical spaces. Mobile phones, GPS receivers, and RFID tags are only a few examples of location-aware mobile technologies that mediate our interaction with networked spaces and influence how we move in these spaces. Increasingly, our physical location determines the types of information with which we interact, the way we move through physical spaces, and the people and things we find around us. These new kinds of networked interactions manifest in everyday social practices that are supported by the use of mobile and location-aware technologies, such as participation in location-based mobile games and social networks, use of location-based services, development of mobile annotation projects, and social mapping, just to name a few. The engagement with these practices has important implications for identity construction, our sense of privacy, our notions of place and space, civic and political participation, policy making, as well as cultural production and consumption in everyday life. We invite papers that address themes at the intersection of mobility and location, or related topics, such as: · Mobile communication and location awareness in everyday life practices; · New urban spatialities developed with mobile gaming and locative social media; · Privacy and surveillance issues as they relate to mobile and location-based social networks; · Identity and spatial construction through locative media art / embodied performance; · Civic engagement and political participation through mobile social media, new mapping practices and location-aware technologies; · Borders, surveillance, and securitization with ubiquitous and mobile technologies; · Aeromobilities, air travel, and aerial vision; · Alternative mobilities and slow movements; · Planning, policy and design for future mobilities and location-based services; · Tourism, imaginary travel, and virtual travel; · Transitions toward sustainable mobilities; · New methodologies for mobilities research. Disciplines represented at the conference may include (but are not exclusive to): Anthropology, Architecture and Design, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Communication, Criminology, Cultural Studies, Geography, Media and Visual Arts, Politics and International Relations, Public Policy, Sociology, Theater and Performance Studies, Tourism Research, Transport Research, and Urban Studies. *Conference location:* North Carolina State University, Raleigh (NC), USA *Conference hotel:* Brownstone Hotel (http://www.brownstonehotel.com/) Discounted rates will be available to registered participants. *Important dates:* Deadline for abstracts: 30 October 2011 (800 words, including references) Notification of acceptance: 15 December 2011 Registration deadline: 30 January 2012 Conference Dates: 16-18 March 2012 Please submit your abstracts through the conference website: http://crdm.chass.ncsu.edu/mobilities/ *Organizing Committee:* Adriana de Souza e Silva (NC State University, USA) Heather Horst (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia) Lee Humphreys (Cornell University, USA) Ole B. Re: [Air-L] How to record online video interviews (audio and video)?
by Karen Smith 13 Oct '11

13 Oct '11

Hi Karin, I've used ScreenFlow software to record interviews conducted over skype (http://www.telestream.net/screen-flow/) from my mac. Using an external microphone is essential for decent sound quality. The software generally performs flawlessly but I have had an error message or two that required a reboot. This is obviously not ideal if it happens mid interview. Best of luck with your project, Karen Karen Smith karen.louise.smith(a)utoronto.ca PhD Candidate Faculty of Information and Knowledge Media Design University of Toronto www.karenlouisesmith.net

CSCW Workshop:The Future of Collaborative Software Development
by Jim Herbsleb 13 Oct '11

13 Oct '11

CSCW Workshop:The Future of Collaborative Software Development February 12, 2012 Full Details: http://research.microsoft.com/futurecsd Call for Participation This workshop brings together researchers who are interested in the evolution of software development organizations and the role of collaboration technology, such as crowdsourcing, social media, software hosting, and application marketplace services. This CSCW 2012 workshop will include brief presentations, moderated discussions, a poster session, and a forecasting exercise to inspire participants to come up with their next big research idea. The major themes of the workshop are 1. How can empirical research methods be adapted to study and evaluate radically decentralized software organizations, where communication occurs on public social media channels and no centralized software repositories are used? 2. What are the organizational aspects of decentralized software teams, and how do they differ from more traditional enterprise or open source teams (for example, participants’ roles, work practices, and performance incentives)? How do these teams form, establish processes, operate, and reflect on their work? 3. How do the organizational, functional, technical, and social aspects of decentralized software teams vary over the course of their projects and overall collaboration? 4. How do software development practices co-evolve with collaboration technologies? 5. Why are particular application domains (for example, socially-relevant projects, health, gaming, energy efficiency, citizen science, education) attracting the focus of decentralized software teams, and how do the teams’ development methodologies and tools enable them to successfully meet their goals? We invite interested participants to submit a 2 to 3 page position paper. The submission deadline is November 22. Please see the workshop website http://research.microsoft.com/futurecsd for all the details. Workshop Organizers: Andrew Begel, Microsoft Research, Redmond James D. Looking for AoIR support for Occupy Seattle ("Digital Media and Protest 101" teach-in)
by qCentral 13 Oct '11

13 Oct '11

Hi all, As we start winding up things for IR12, I'm looking to help occupyseattle organizers connect with area researchers to hold a "Digital Media and Protest 101" teach-in next week? The goal: 60-90 minute teach-in the week of 17 October with a focus on internal and external communication strategies for the area #Occupy effort. There are several local community groups (a church and local union in particular) who are also interested in attending a "Digital Media and Protest 101" teach-in. If you are interested in participating in the teach-in or would like to contribute resources (syllabi, reading lists, student interns, gear) to it, will you email me directly (qcentral(a)indiana.edu) or to the list so that I can get a show of hands from folks interested in helping out. Many thanks and good to see/meet many of you at IR12. Best, Mary _______________________ On sabbatical until January 9, 2012 Mary L. CSCW Workshop CFP: Reconciling Privacy with Social Media
by Michael Zimmer 13 Oct '11

13 Oct '11

CSCW Workshop: Reconciling Privacy with Social Media February 12, 2012 Full Details: http://phitlab.host22.com/cscw2012privacyworkshop.html Call for Participation Much research on privacy in social media has focused on limiting personal information disclosure, increasing control, and perpetuating social withdrawal. Therefore, privacy goals are often characterized as diametrically opposed to goals of sharing and connecting via social media. However, privacy can also be characterized as a broader process where individuals and groups coordinate social interaction with others. In this broader conceptualization, privacy behavior moves beyond binary decisions to withhold or disclose and becomes an interactional process that involves the cooperation of others in the relationship. The goal of this workshop is to explore privacy in broader contexts and to understand its relationship to the benefits of social media and the support of online cooperative relationships. The workshop will focus on two main themes: Focusing on the benefits and outcomes of interactional privacy behaviors in social media environments, and emphasizing design and evaluation solutions for bringing such benefits to fruition. We invite potential workshop participants to submit 2-4 page position papers that describe research related to the workshop themes. The deadline for submission is November 25. Please see the workshop website athttp://phitlab.host22.com/cscw2012privacyworkshop.html for more information. Workshop Co-Organizers: Heather Richter Lipford, University of North Carolina at Charlotte Pamela Wisniewski, University of North Carolina at Charlotte Cliff Lampe, University of Michigan Lorraine Kisselburgh, Purdue University Kelly Caine, Indiana University Bloomington Program Committee: Coye Cheshire, University of California Berkeley Catherine Dwyer, Pace University Woodrow Hartzog, Samford University Adam Joinson, University of Bath Jen King, University of California Berkeley Airi Lampinen, Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT & University of Helsinki Deirdre Mulligan, University of California Berkeley Fred Stutzman, Carnegie Mellon University Janice Tsai, Microsoft Michael Zimmer, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
