by Nicole Ellison 13 Oct '11

13 Oct '11

Apologies for X-posting; hope this will be of interest to some of you. - Nicole ----------------------------------------- CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS AT ICWSM-2012 ----------------------------------------- Workshops at the Sixth International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media Dublin, Ireland, June 4-8, 2012 http://www.icwsm.org/2012/ Sponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence ----------------------------------------- SUBMISSION DEADLINE: December 14, 2011. SUBMISSION SITE: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=icwsm2012workshops ----------------------------------------- The ICWSM-12 Committee invites proposals for Workshops Day at the Sixth International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM-12). The Workshops Day will be held at the end of the conference on June 8 2012 in Dublin, Ireland. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to meet and discuss issues with a selected focus ó providing an informal setting for active exchange among researchers, developers and users on topics of current interest. Members of all segments of the social media research community are encouraged to submit proposals. To foster interaction and exchange of ideas, the workshops will be kept small, with 25ñ50 participants. Attendance is limited to active participants only. The format of workshops will be determined by their organizers, who are encouraged to avoid a mini-conference format that is dominated by long talks and short discussions. Instead, the organizers should leave ample time for discussions and interaction between the participants, and should encourage the submission and presentation of position papers that discuss new research ideas. Workshops can be a half-day or full-day in length. A half-day workshop is assumed unless you specify otherwise in your proposal. ---------------- PROPOSAL CONTENT ---------------- Proposals for workshops should be no more than three (3) pages in length, and should contain the following: * A description of the workshop topic. Identify the specific issues and research questions the workshop will focus on. * A brief discussion of why the topic is of particular interest at this time. * A list of related workshops held previously at related conferences and a brief statement on how the proposed workshop differs from or how it follows-up on work presented at previous workshops. * A brief description of the proposed workshop format, regarding the mix of events such as paper presentations, invited talks, panels, and general discussion. * An indication as to whether the workshop should be considered for a half-day or full-day meeting. * The names and full contact information (email and postal addresses, fax and phone numbers) of the organizing committee ó three or four people knowledgeable in the field ó and short descriptions of their relevant expertise. (Please specify main contact.) Strong proposals include organizers who bring differing perspectives to the workshop topic and who are actively connected to the communities of potential participants. * A list of potential attendees. Workshops are an excellent forum for exploring emerging approaches and task areas, for bridging the gaps between the social science and technology fields or between subfields of social media research, for elucidating the results of exploratory research, or for critiquing existing approaches. Because workshops are intended for focused exploration of special topics, topics that are already the subject of regular meetings are not appropriate. --------------------- WORKSHOP ORGANIZATION --------------------- Workshop organizers will be responsible for the following: * Producing a call for submissions/participation. The call for papers is due January 13, 2012; due to the short turnaround time, you should create a draft in tandem with your proposal. Organizers are responsible for additional publicity such as distributing the call to relevant newsgroups and electronic mailing lists, and especially to potential audiences from outside the ICWSM community. Organizers are encouraged to maintain their own web site. * Selecting participants. Workshop attendance is by invitation of the organizers. Selection of attendees will be made by the organizers on the basis of submissions due March 2, 2012. Workshop organizers will need to provide ICWSM-12 with a preliminary list of the participants on April 2, 2012. * Coordinating the production of the workshop papers and abstracts. AAAI coordinates the collection, production, and distribution of the technical reports or working notes for the workshops. Workshop papers and abstracts must be received by AAAI no later than April 2, 2012, and volumes are limited to a total of 200 pages. Workshop organizers who want to publish the papers from their workshop (or significant portions of it) will have the opportunity to do so through the AAAI Press. The Press (which retains the right of first refusal to publish) will furnish details of its program to interested organizers and authors. ICWSM will provide logistical support, and meeting places for the workshops, and will determine the dates and times of the workshops. ICWSM reserves the right to drop any workshop if the organizers miss the above deadlines. Workshops are not to be used as a vehicle for marketing products. A reduced workshop registration fee will be offered to ICWSM-12 technical program registrants. ------------------- SUBMISSION DEADLINE ------------------- Proposals must be received by December 14, 2011. I wanted to let you know about a special discussion I'll be leading during the opening week at The Angelika in NYC of award-winning Sundance documentary “CONNECTED: An Autoblogography about Love, Death & Technology,” directed by Tiffany Shlain <https://plus.google.com/111478439486714402941> . I was asked to host the discussion after the Wednesday 7:15pm screening, and decided to talk about how the current evolution of media has led to a revitalization of direct democracy, ranging from the Arab Spring to the Occupy Wall Street protests. The event is part of a line-up of speakers all week. If you can't make it to my screening, by all means come this weekend (opens Friday) during opening weekend, or any other time next week, if you're in New York or nearby. Canadian Internet Use Survey 2010 Statistics Canada results released today October 12th. Fremch and English
by Peter Timusk 12 Oct '11

12 Oct '11

Hope some of you at the conference watch this survey. BTW it changed a bit this year to be more up to date see the note to readers. English below http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/111012/dq111012a-eng.htm Individual Internet use and E-commerce 2010 In 2010, 80% of individuals aged 16 years and older used the Internet for personal use. Significant differences in use rates exist based on age, income, location and other factors. Residents of British Columbia (86%) and Alberta (84%) reported the highest use rates. Rates were lowest in Newfoundland and Labrador (73%) and New Brunswick (70%). Table 1 Individuals using the Internet from any location <http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/111012/t111012a1-eng.htm> Among individuals living in census metropolitan areas (CMA) or census agglomerations, 82% used the Internet, compared with 72% of those living outside of these areas. CMAs with the highest rates of use included Calgary, Saskatoon, Barrie, OttawaGatineau, and Halifax (all at 88%), as well as Vancouver and Victoria (both at 87%). More results on the link. NOTE: Note to readers The 2010 Canadian Internet Use Survey was conducted in October and November as a supplement to the Labour Force Survey. The survey was redesigned for 2010 to meet the measurement needs of the Broadband Canada: Connecting Rural Canadians Program, sponsored by Industry Canada. The survey now consists of a household component, which measures home access, and an individual component, which measures online behaviours. To keep abreast of changing technologies and online activities, questions were modified and new content developed as part of the redesign with Industry Canada. For these reasons, results from the 2010 survey cannot be directly compared with those of past surveys. This release features individual Internet use and e-commerce, based on a sample of approximately 22,600 individuals aged 16 years and older. Results from the household component were released in The Daily <http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/110525/dq110525b-eng.htm> on May 25, 2011. Peter Timusk B.Math statistics. KISSING BOOTH (Hoping that got your attention!)
by Terri Senft 11 Oct '11

11 Oct '11

Dear AoIRFolk: Greetings from the glamorous Renaissance Hotel, where we are gearing up to run the Internet Kissing Booth installation today and tomorrow! Here are some things worth knowing: You can watch footage on camera here: www.stickam.com/kissingbooth You can “blow a kiss” (AKA comment) using Twitter hash tag: #ir12kiss Our hours of operation will be: Tues: 3:30pm -5:30pm; 6:00pm-8:00pm PST Wed: 10:00pm-2:30pm; 4:30pm-6:00pm PST (note: all times are three hours later for those on the U.S. east coast) So, what is an Internet Kissing Booth? Lots of you have asked what on earth this is all about, and it’s a fair enough question. The idea for an Internet Kissing Booth originated over a year ago while watching a colleague who had the misfortune of being upstaged by a Twitter stream broadcast running behind her while she spoke. That episode got us thinking about similar episodes in our own lives: --times we realized students were talking online backchannel during our lectures; --times we ourselves were Tweeting at a conference to get new followers rather than looking at a live conference presenter; --concerns many of us have about having our free-form in-class exchanges recorded for podcasts; --the general anxiety nearly everyone experiences when asked to sit in front of a camera for more than one minute, wondering what the rest of the world is thinking about our image… Since the conference theme this year is “performance,” we thought it would be a good time to think through some of these issues, starting with our own bodies. We set up the booth with a sign that says the following: GET KISSED! Here’s How: 1. Enter the booth. 2. Face the camera. 3. Set the egg timer for three minutes. 4. Watch the Twitter feed on screen, and read the world’s comments about your image. Your sound will be muted and you won’t be able to type responses. 5. Think about what it means to be watched (we’re usually the watchers!) 6. Try to stay the entire three minutes. 7. Leave the booth. 8. Have a lollipop (on us.) 9. Have a drink (you pay for that.) 10. If you can, come talk with us at roundtable: “Performance & Presence, Absence & Silence" (begins at 3:15 pm on Thursday) What Can I Do From Afar? To make this fun and interesting, we need everyone’s help. Even (especially) if you aren’t at the conference, we are hoping you will be able to watch and comment via Twitter (hashtag: #ir12kiss) when you have the time. We’ve asked people to “blow a kiss” intentionally. We’re not interested in rudeness, but in general comments and observations of what you seen on your screen. Certainly, this isn't meant to be some Skinnerian experiment in trolling, and if it even seems to be getting weird or ugly, we’ll stop the project and talk about that. Mostly, we are interested in gauging peoples’ experiences as they watched themselves being watched. And speaking of watching: I’ll run the conversation at the roundtable on Stickam for you to see remotely, if people are interested in that. Okay, that is more than enough from me. Feel free to shoot any questions to my gmail address: tsenft(a)gmail.com And see you on the Twitter stream! #irkiss Terri (the one with the good hair on camera) -- Dr. Theresa M.
