IPSA call for paper - Technology and Higher Education: The Role of the Internet
by Monica Zuccarini 06 Oct '11

06 Oct '11

Dear colleagues, we invite you to submit your paper proposals to our panel "Technology and Higher Education: The Role of the Internet" (RC11: Science and Politics http://www.ipsa.org/my-ipsa/events/madrid2012/panel/technology-and-higher-e…) for the International Political Science Association (IPSA) World Congress. Chair: Mauro Calise (University of Naples Federico II, IPSA Portal Editor) Discussants: Michael Brintnall (APSA Executive Director) The modern information and communication technologies promise to improve the quality, flexibility and effectiveness of higher education. Students are more and more computer and IT literate and, for their part, universities are realizing that the new technologies are one of the most important springboards for innovation.
The introduction of new technologies into teaching is progressing along similar lines to those seen in other fields some years before. One example is that of libraries and the way they organize the output of the knowledge industry. The progressive integration of new multi-media technologies with teaching methodologies is creating an environment of virtual knowledge-sharing through the interconnection of learning and teaching spaces.
Following these considerations, this panel looks into the new methodologies and new tools used to study and research online, it investigates how computers and the Web can be used to improve student learning and skills development, how the Internet can enhance traditional teaching and learning methods, how scientists design and implement the innovations, looks at experiences and innovative projects in the universities, and more generally at the cutting-edge approaches and techniques that can be applied in social sciences.
Case studies, applications of new methodologies and tools are welcome. NEW DEADLINE for paper proposals: 17 October 2011 Please use the IPSA internet in order to submit your paper proposals: http://www.ipsa.org/events/congress/madrid2012/submit-abstractpaper-proposal Anyone can submit an abstract. You do not need to be a member of IPSA in order to submit your abstract. In case you have problems, you could contact directly the Convenor (Monica Zuccarini: zuccarini(a)gmail.com) Apologies for cross-posting

CFP: A Special Issue on Transnational HCI
by Irina Shklovski 06 Oct '11

06 Oct '11

****** Call for Papers (for the full text of this call please see: http://www.itu.dk/people/irsh/THCIcfp.pdf) ****** A special issue of Human-Computer Interaction "Transnational HCI: Humans, Computers and Interactions Considered Globally" Deadline for proposals: December 1, 2011 Special issue editors: Irina Shklovski IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark Janet Vertesi Princeton University, USA Silvia Lindtner University of California, Irvine, USA Lucy Suchman Lancaster University, UK HCI researchers are increasingly interested in understanding the role of technology in relation to global processes. ICT4D (Information and Communication Technologies for Development), emerging markets, new forms of mobility, and the internationalization of organizations dominate contemporary conversations about information and communication technology. Whether in academia or industry, all agree that technology design and research today must consider the role these globalizing processes play in the way people collaborate, interact and exchange ideas across national and cultural boundaries. The focus of this special issue is on the relations between transnational processes and technology practice, design and research. We are especially interested in characterizing the theoretical, methodological, and empirical challenges of our work in transnational settings in a way that will be useful for future research and design in this area. For example, what analytical and methodological frames from within the HCI tradition offer new approaches to this empirical context, and which of our existing frames require reconsideration? How does "Transnational HCI" engage with or challenge ICT4D or Reflexive HCI? Thinking interdisciplinarily, what can the broader HCI community learn by drawing on work in other disciplines, such as information studies, anthropology, media and cultural studies, communications, science and technology studies? How can HCI contribute a novel perspective on transnationalism and technology to those disciplines as well? We encourage papers that represent a variety of disciplinary perspectives and analytical approaches. True to the "transnational" perspective, submissions do not have to be limited to "developing world" sites. Examples of topics that fall into the scope of this special issue include but are not limited to: . The network society: global flows, frictions and politics in local-global technology use . Cross-cultural collaboration and culture as encounter . Communication and collaboration across boundaries (not just the nation-state) . Diaspora communities, the politics of international migration, and technology . Use of information and communication technologies in censorship state zones . The role of information and communication technologies in reconfiguring "the local" . Political, local and translocal in new technological sites . Technology design and use in constructing, reproducing, or enforcing notions of global connectedness or local community . The role of technology in preserving versus undermining cultural identity . Mobility and circulation in constructing or moving between the local and the global . Methods for analysis and design in complex, hybrid, or virtual transnational spaces . The relationship between the researcher, designer and user in transnational collaborative projects This special issue follows upon two successful workshops: the Ubicomp 2010 workshop "Transnational Times" organized by Shklovski, Lindtner, Vertesi, and Dourish, and the CHI 2011 workshop "Transnational HCI" organized by Vertesi, Lindtner and Shklovski. *Important Dates* Deadline for proposals: December 1, 2011 Response to authors: January 5, 2012 Full papers due: April 2, 2012 Reviews to authors: July 16, 2012 Revised papers due: October 15, 2012 Reviews to authors: February 15, 2013 Final papers due: April 1, 2013 Submission of proposals Proposals should be at least 1000 words and provide a clear indication of what the paper will be about. Proposals should be submitted by email to the special issue editors (transnationaltimes(a)gmail.com) Mention explicitly in the email that your submission is intended for this special issue. The proposals will be evaluated for relevance to the special issue themes and guidance will be given. The full paper submissions will be peer reviewed to the usual standards of HCI. -- ============================================== Irina Shklovski Assistant Professor Design, Culture, Mobility& Communication (DCMC) IT University of Copenhagen Rued Langgaards Vej, 7 2300, Copenhagen S. scraping google discussion groups?
by Andrew Schrock 06 Oct '11

06 Oct '11

Has anybody successfully scraped a Google discussion group? I found a script online, but it's thrown off by the fact you now have to login to view any groups. Google is getting squirrely about spammers scraping their data, so it may be a big roadblock. I'm looking at authorization with the Google PHP lib, but I'm not sure it will get me to groups, it all seems app-focused (so if you want to add items to a Google calendar for instance). Much appreciate any ideas that don't involve me adding 6000-some message to my analysis software by hand :/ best Andrew Andrew Schrock USC Annenberg Doctoral Student aschrock(a)usc.edu 714.330.6545

Critical Writing on FOSS and Wikipedia
by Andrew Herman 05 Oct '11

05 Oct '11

Dear Fellow Aoiristas! I have a master student who is contemplating doing an MA Thesis on the comparative political economy of FOSS and Wikipedia. She definitely wants to approach the topic through a Marxist lens so I underscore the salience of "political economy" here. My first take on her proposal is that she is awfully naive about the incipient "info communism" of Wiikipedia but really needs some good critical empirical work to lift the histomat scales from her eyes. Any suggestions you might have our comrade, however deviant or deviationist, would be most appreciated. IR 12 is coming! AH Andrew Herman, Ph. D. The survey is here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Y7DRNL5 If you mod games, I hope you will take the survey. If you know anyone who mods games, perhaps you have students who do, I would be grateful if you could pass along this email. The survey is open for two weeks (until Oct 19), and there will be one $20 Amazon gift card given away to three randomly-chosen respondents who complete all the questions and submit their email address (you do not have to submit your email address to complete the survey, but you do if you want to enter the drawing). If you get into town during the day on Monday, drop in and pick up your bag. Registration is in the courtyard foyer (which is situated on the B level of the hotel). Tuesday, October 11, the registration desk will open at 7:00 am. Yes, Yes, you read it correctly!!! We will start at 9:00 sharp, so we would like to process everyone before the Conference Opening. This includes the book exhibits, the kissing booth, keynote talks, welcome event, ignite talks, food and beverages during the conference and the Tuesday reception (note that we don't have a reception on Wednesday). Note that the paper sessions, roundtables and panels are all located on the third and fourth floors of the hotel. All Lunch are on your own. WEATHER Seattle in the fall is cool (10-15 degrees celsius, or mid-50s for those in Farenheit) and a high probability of showers. Dress warmly, bring a waterproof jacket, and shoes that you can walk in the rain in and not have wet feet. You'll have more fun. WHAT TO DO OR EAT IN SEATTLE Seattle is known for its great restaurants. Our hotel is located in a great place which is nearby many dining and entertainment sites. Check here http://ir12.aoir.org/dining-in-seattle and http://ir12.aoir.org/fun-around-seattle.
