Call for Papers for IJDET Special Issue on Emotional Intelligence for Online Learning
by Maiga Chang 02 Oct '11

02 Oct '11

[Apologies if you receive multiple times, please circulate this to your colleagues who might be interested, thank you so much.] ------- SI on Emotional Intelligence for Online Learning Call for Papers ----------- Special Issue on Emotional Intelligence for Online Learning (http://maiga.athabascau.ca/editors/JDET-Special_Issue-2011-Emotional_Intell…) in International Journal of Distance Education Technologies (http://www.igi-global.com/Bookstore/TitleDetails.aspx?TitleId=1078&DetailsT…) Many intelligent tutoring systems have been developed and used to support students' learning. Good online learning systems require emotional communications happened in-between the tutors and the learners. Emotions play an important role when users engage in career or drama training, or language learning situations via role-play. Interpreting player experience and affect from open-ended verbal communication and diverse body language has been challenging research tasks. It further promotes the importance of such studies when employing diverse game-play modalities (e.g. mobile interfaces and augmented reality platforms) and when recognizing affect and mood from metaphorical affective expressions, dialogue context, emotionally ambiguous or non-prototypical spoken utterances, facial expressions and gestures. Such research is significantly beneficial to the development of intelligent virtual agents which are capable of interpreting social relationships, context, general mood and emotion, sensing or reasonably predicating others' inter-conversion, identifying its role and participating intelligently in open-ended interaction. How to develop a system which can identify user's emotion and/or present its feelings to the user according to user's words, behaviors, and performance in online learning is definitely an important, a very helpful as well an interesting research topic. The purpose of this special issue is to explore how models, theories, and solutions of emotion intelligence can be used in online learning and what benefits users can receive from such emotion intelligence-embedded systems and agents. Guest Editors (in alphabet order): Dr. Maiga Chang, Dr. Rita Kuo and Dr. Li Zhang Suggested topics: We cordially invite authors to submit high quality manuscripts for any application domain as long as the core of the manuscript belongs to: - Affect sensing from text, speech, facial expression and gestures - Affect inspired interactive intelligent games (e.g., mobile interfaces, augmented reality platforms, natural user interfaces - non touch based user interfaces) - Emotion modelling and generation - Human computer interaction issues and challenges that affective computing/emotional intelligence solutions for online learning may have - Emotional tutoring agents/learning companions/interactive robots - Affective computing tools, systems and applications for online learning - Emotional intelligent agents for assisting teaching or learning - Multi-agent based affective computing systems and applications - Practical experiences in using & deploying emotional intelligence for online learning - Successful cases of applying emotional intelligence to online learning - Not-so-successful cases and the lessons learnt - Evaluation models for emotional intelligent agents/systems Important dates and manuscript guidelines: All submissions have to follow IGI Global journal manuscript guidelines and should be sent to the guest editors directly via email (maiga.chang(a)gmail.com, rita.mcsl(a)gmail.com and L.Zhang(a)cs.bham.ac.uk) by February 28, 2012. It is encouraged to authors who are interested in submitting your works to submit an one-page abstract with manuscript title by January 31, 2012 to indicate your intention in sending complete manuscript by February 28. All submissions are going to be reviewed by at least three reviewers, the final camera-ready manuscripts have to be revised by the author(s) according to reviewer comments before sending to the guest editors by June 1, 2012. The other important dates are: - February 28, 2012: Submission deadline - May 1, 2012: Review result notification - June 1, 2012: Revised manuscript submission deadline - June 15, 2012: Acceptance notification - June 30, 2012: Final camera-ready manuscript submission deadline IGI Global manuscript guidelines at: http://www.igi-global.com/Files/AuthorEditor/journaltemplate.doc For queries, please contact Dr. Maiga Chang (maiga.chang(a)gmail.com)

SCHED* conference tool?
by Nancy Baym 02 Oct '11

02 Oct '11

Like many of you I suspect, I received an email this morning from the "SCHED* team" encouraging me to sign in as a speaker at IR12. I am wondering if this is a service AoIR has officially connected with to help connect conference attendees or if they have just harvested the speaker list and are spamming us all. Some clarification would be appreciated. Thanks Nancy

CFP ICA Mobile Communication pre-conference 2012
by Adriana de Souza e Silva 02 Oct '11

02 Oct '11

***Apologies for cross-postings*** Mobile Communication, Community and Locative Media Practices: From the Everyday to the Revolutionary 2012 International Communication Association (ICA) Pre-conference Workshop May 23 – 24, 2012, Phoenix AZ, USA Conference website: http://sociomobile.org/mobile2012/ Keynote Speaker: Mimi Sheller (Drexel University, USA) Mobile and location-based networked interactions permeate our world. We no longer enter the Internet--we carry it with us. We experience it while moving through physical spaces. Smart phones, GPS receivers, and RFID tags are only a few examples of location-aware mobile technologies that mediate our interaction with networked spaces and the people in them. Increasingly, our physical location determines the types of information with which we interact, and the people and things we find around us. These new kinds of networked interactions manifest in everyday social practices that are supported by the use of mobile technologies, such as participation in location-based mobile games and social networks, engagement with location-based services, development of mobile annotation projects, and social mapping, just to name a few. The engagement with these practices has important implications for identity construction, our sense of privacy, our notions of place and space, civic and political participation, building community, policy making, as well as cultural production and consumption in everyday life. This preconference will provide a venue for innovative scholars from around the world who are doing research in exploring how we experience our locally-rooted mobile networked interactions and mobile communication’s impact on community. It will give them a chance to gather and discuss the challenges that this shift in the use of both mobile phones and the Internet poses not only for the users but for those doing research on mobile communication. We welcome abstracts that will focus on the following areas: § Mobile communication and location awareness in everyday life practices; § New urban spatialities developed with mobile gaming and locative social media; definitions of “community” in a mobile mediated context § Privacy and surveillance issues as they relate to location-based social networks; § Identity and spatial construction through locative media art / performance design and its impact on communities; § Civic engagement and political participation through mobile social media, new mapping practices and location-aware technologies; § Learning and education potentials of mobile and location-based media; The two-day preconference will be comprised of formal panel presentations, one keynote speaker, opportunities for informal discussions, and time for networking. Thirty – fifty attendees are expected. The preconference will be at the main ICA hotel. The pre-conference registration fee will be $100. Abstracts of no more than 500 words are due by November 15, 2010. Please send them along with your name and contact information to Dr. Adriana de Souza e Silva (adriana(a)souzaesilva.com) Accepted abstracts will be notified by December 1, 2010. Final papers will be due April 1, 2012. archival/search tools for Sina and Weibo?
by Aaron S. Veenstra 02 Oct '11

02 Oct '11

Hi all, I have a student who is interested in studying how Chinese microblogs compared to traditional media outlets in covering the July 23 train accident in Wenzhou. She's been looking at Sina and Weibo, and having trouble getting any kind of helpful search results -- the best she's been able to do is trace back individual users who were know to have posted about it from the present back to late July. I've used Twapper Keeper to get a targeted archive of old tweets, and I'm wondering if anybody knows of any similar third-party tools for Sina and/or Weibo. Anything that would allow for a keyword/date search would be perfect. TIA, Aaron -- Aaron S. "From: Jim Parker <drjparker(a)gmail.com> To: air-l(a)aoir.org Subject: Re: [Air-L] Men and the Internet Here is a book that looks at lots of data to see what kind of porn both men and women search. http://www.billionwickedthoughts.com/index.html" That's also a book whose authors got slammed for their misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, also for their unethical (questioning minors about their sexual practices without parental consent among others), biased, and unscientific gathering of data, lack of IRB approval, and pretending to have the blessing of a reputable institution. Sort of representing the worst evolutionary psychology has to offer. Critique of the research the book is based on: http://neuroanthropology.net/2009/09/06/sex-lies-and-irb-tape-netporn-to-su… http://mackle.wordpress.com/2009/09/03/the-curious-case-of-the-game-show-ne… Reviews & tags on amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Billion-Wicked-Thoughts-Largest-Experiment/dp/0525952… This is the only book there with a "your sample population hates you now" tag.
