PLEASE POST : Subjects needed for Fantasy Project
by June Luchjenbroers 10 Sep '11

10 Sep '11

Hi all, We hope that members of this list will consider (i) participating in this study, and/or (ii) posting details of this study where possible to help advertise the project? Michelle Aldridge (Communication, Cardiff Univ) and I (June Luchjenbroers, Linguistics Bangor Univ) are running a new Survey, and we aim to capture an International, discourse corpus of people's fantasies as communicated online. The full title of this project is: "A cross-cultural study of people's fantasies : The linguistic structure of fantasies across social groups." Participation is accomplished through the Survey Monkey link offered below. To begin, roughly 6 unidentifying questions about the submitter are asked (eg country, age group, gender, English ability) and then after the fantasy is offered (in complete anonymity) we ask another 5-6 questions that relate to that fantasy. The entire process is completely anonymous and this project has University ethical approval. Also of importance is that we are not targeting any particular type of fantasy and All types of fantasy will be welcome contributions. The link is now LIVE and will be open until 1 October 2011 _https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FantasyResearch2011_ cheers, June & Michelle

DML2012 CFP: "Beyond Educational Technology: Learning Innovations in a Connected World"
by danah boyd 09 Sep '11

09 Sep '11

** Please Circulate Widely ** CALL FOR PROPOSALS - BEYOND EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY: LEARNING INNOVATIONS IN A CONNECTED WORLD Digital Media and Learning Conference Website: http://dml2012.dmlcentral.net/ San Francisco, California March 1-3, 2012 Conference Chair: Diana Rhoten (News Corp.) Conference Committee: Tracy Fullerton (USC) Antero Garcia (UCLA) Mitch Resnick (MIT) Mark Surman (Mozilla Foundation) Technology will revolutionize education. That was the shout heard around the world as early as the 1970s when “microcomputers” first appeared on the scene. In the last forty years, the exponentially increasing powers and dramatically decreasing costs of computer technologies have surpassed even the wildest dreams of those early days. Yet, there is still little evidence of any major technology-enabled disruptions to the structure and culture of mainstream education. Today, technology has once again become the rallying call for education innovation. Whether as efforts to establish new institutions, experiment with mobile devices, develop learning applications, or incorporate personalized and distance education platforms, information technologies and digital media are at the center of the education innovation conversation. In 20th Century United States, schools were seen as the primary locus of education, where teachers are transmitters and students are receivers of information and knowledge. As a result, education reform movements focused on promoting school-based practices and processes that would maximize institutional efficiencies. In that context, the then emerging “education technology” community (as it has since come to be known) drew from the “best practice” of their time and focused mainly on the development of instructional hardware to increase standardized test scores, administrative technology to facilitate record keeping, or content management systems to deliver traditional curriculum online. More recently, however, cutting-edge research from the social and behavioral sciences has begun to show that an individual’s learning can be accelerated by tapping into personal interests that span different social experiences including but beyond schooling. Evidence also suggests that individuals may learn more efficaciously and more equitably, without gaps between rich and poor, when they learn in specialty domains and practice areas that they choose and for which they are motivated. Compared to older education paradigms, this 21st Century pedagogical view reframes learning as the creation and acquisition of knowledge through observing, interacting and collaborating with others anywhere, anytime. As a result, we are now seeing new technologies and digital media designed not to deliver a faster, cheaper schooling but rather to enable richer, deeper learning. As this new “digital media and learning” movement (as it is becoming known) expands, we are seeing the emergence of Web-enabled, mobile-based platforms that promote new models of peer-to-peer learning, anywhere / anytime learning, blended learning and game-based learning. The “education technology” and “digital media and learning” views on education innovation represent differences in thinking not just about technologies for but also – more importantly – pedagogies and epistemologies of learning. While there are fundamental differences between these perspectives, we do not think these two visions need be or should be in conflict with one another. In fact, we believe they are complements to one another, with critical and necessary synergies between their approaches. For example, there is great evidence to suggest that "basic skills" and “core competencies” may be best learned in classroom environments but then augmented and advanced with the type of independent, interactive learner-centered experiences that new technologies can provide outside of the classroom. Building a new future for education and learning in a connected world not only allows but actually requires bridging in-school and out-of-school learning practices and philosophies through networks of learning institutions and alliances. Inspired by Silicon Valley’s culture of technology-led innovation, the 2012 Digital Media and Learning Conference will explore ongoing questions and debates around the role of technology and the future of education and learning. What are the primary purposes and practices of education, and how can technology accelerate or decelerate them? When we talk about disruptive technologies, what systems and players are we really seeking to change and to what end? What sectors, institutions and populations are we mobilizing for innovation and for whom are we mobilizing them? How do we design, build and fund infrastructures around new connections across and configurations of learning? How do we cultivate a healthy, symbiotic ecosystem of innovation that leads to a future of Connected Learning? In answering these and other questions, we hope attendees will challenge their assumptions and share their visions about what education and learning could or should look like in a connected world. To that end, we invite provocative sessions that address the intersections and tensions inherent in different approaches to innovation, and we strongly encourage interactive discussions that push panelists and participants alike to ask themselves where they are in the innovation conversation and how they plan to translate that conversation into action. ABOUT THE WORKSHOP, PAPER AND PANEL PROPOSALS We welcome workshops, panels and papers along five themes: Making, Tinkering and Remixing; Re-imagining Media for Learning; Democratizing Learning Innovation; Innovations for Public Education and Digital Media and Learning. Making, Tinkering and Remixing. To become full and active participants in 21st century society, young people must learn to design, create, and invent with new technologies, not simply interact with them. What are the pathways for becoming a maker and not just a user in a world of Connected Learning? What social and technical infrastructures provide the best support for young people as they learn to tinker with materials, remix one another’s work, and iteratively refine their creations? Re-imagining Media for Learning. What does it mean to think of media and games in the service of diverse educational goals and within a broad ecology of learning? In particular, how can we balance the needs of multi-stakeholder alliances against the challenges of designing engaging, playful and truly innovative media experiences? Especially those that go beyond implementations of technologies and platforms to create real communities of playful learning and rich opportunities for individual discovery and growth. Democratizing Learning Innovation. Looking to the groundswell for massively collaborative innovation and change, what does it take to pull from a participatory and networked ecology to push innovation from the bottom up and from the outside in versus top down and inside out? Innovations for Public Education. Too often cutting edge technology innovations serve the interests of the already privileged “creative class.” What can we do to ensure that the most innovative forms of learning are accessible to all educators and young people relying on public education infrastructures? How can digital innovation directly impact disparities in achievement of students based on race and class? Digital Media and Learning. We also welcome submissions that address innovative research and practice in the field of digital media and learning. Presentation Formats This year we will be accepting proposals in three formats: panels, workshops and short talks. Panels bring together in discussion four participants or presentations representing a range of ideas and projects. Panels are scheduled for 90 minutes and should include a mix of individuals working in areas of research, theory, and practice. We also encourage the use of discussants. Workshops provide an opportunity for hands-on exploration and/or problem solving. They can be organized around a core challenge that participants come together to work on or around a tool, platform, or concept. Workshops are scheduled for 90 minutes and should be highly participatory. Finally, we welcome short, ten minute talks where presenters speak for ten minutes on their work, research or a subject relevant to the conference theme and/or subthemes. Note: Proposals for ignite sessions will be announced in January 2012. Submitting Your Proposal The DML2012 Conference proposal system is now open and full proposals will be due on October 19, 2011 (11:59 pm PST). To propose a panel, participants will be required to register with Fastapps http://fastapps.dmlcentral.org, our submission system at the Digital Media and Learning Research Hub. Participants will be able to edit their proposals up until the final deadline. Panel and Workshop proposal abstracts should cover the theme, format (e.g. discussion, interactive, presentations), how the session addresses the theme of the conference and/or subtheme in up to 500 words. Short talk abstracts should cover the theme, format (e.g. discussion, interactive, presentations), how the talk addresses the theme of the conference and/or subtheme in up to 250 words. List of participants, affiliations, emails and titles of talks/presentations (if applicable) should also be included. We will not be soliciting full papers or publishing conference proceedings. Please note that each participant will be limited to participation on no more than two panels at the conference. Participants will be expected to fund their own travel and accommodation. About the Conference The Digital Media and Learning Conference is an annual event supported by the MacArthur Foundation and organized by the Digital Media and Learning Research Hub located at the UC Humanities Research Institute, University of California, Irvine. The conference is meant to be an inclusive, international and annual gathering of scholars and practitioners in the field, focused on fostering interdisciplinary and participatory dialog and linking theory, empirical study, policy, and practice. The third annual conference – DML2012 – is organized around the theme “Beyond Educational Technology: Learning Innovations in a Connected World” and will be held between March 1-3, 2012 in San Francisco, California. ------ "taken out of context, i must seem so strange" -- ani http://www.zephoria.org/thoughts/ http://www.danah.org/ @zephoria

AoIR Ethics Guidelines Draft: Membership Comment and Review
by Elizabeth Buchanan 09 Sep '11

09 Sep '11

Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the AoIR Ethics Working Committee, Annette Markham and I would like to announce that the Ethical Decision-Making and Internet Research (version 2.0): Recommendations from the AoIR Ethics Working Committee is now ready for AoIR membership review and comment. As you may know, in 2002, the first version of the document was released, and has enjoyed extensive use. Given the many changes in Internet studies and research since that time, the Ethics Working Committee has been working on a revision for a number of years. The draft revision has now been approved by the committee. We invite your comments, and your suggestions. We realize that discussions of ethics, in particular research ethics, generate much debate, given disciplinary, cultural, and epistemological differences. We have seen this over the years on the Air-l list, and we've reviewed those discussions as we've worked through this document. We hope we have provided a document that speaks to a range of stakeholders and represents the AoIR community. To review and comment on the draft, please visit: http://aoirethics.ijire.net/ Instructions for making comments are specified on the website. As described, we will collect comments through Sunday, October 2. An open session will be held during the AoIR conference, and is scheduled for Tuesday, October 11, at 4:00 (room TBA). Once all comments and considerations have been received, the document will be revised accordingly, and then will be open for a vote by AoIR membership. We look forward to your participation in this process. If you have any questions about the process, feel free to email buchanane(a)uwstout.edu or amarkham(a)gmail.com With best regards, Elizabeth Buchanan and Annette Markham

PLEASE REGISTER Attendance of the workshop is free. If you wish to participate, please register at http://web.me.com/emcnglworkshop/JEC2011/Registration.html ? Premise: Recent years have seen a revolution in MT triggered by the emergence of statistical approaches and improvements in translation quality. MT (rule-based, statistical and hybrid) is now available for many languages for free (on the Web) or for a fee and MT technologies are making strong inroads into the corporate localisation and translation industries as well as large public and administrative organisations dealing with multi-lingual content. Open-source MT solutions are competing with proprietary products. Increasing numbers of (professional) translators are post-editing TM/MT output. MT is a reality for internet users accessing and gisting content which is not available in their native language. At the same time, there has been a degree of disconnect between mainstream academic research and conferences on MT, often (and rightly so) focusing on algorithms to improve translation quality, and many of the important practical issues that need to be addressed to make MT maximally useful in real translation and localisation workflows, with human translators and users in general. ? Objectives: JEC 2011 brings together translators, users, academic and industrial MT researchers and developers to discuss issues that are most important in real world industrial settings and applications involving MT, but currently under-represented in research circles. ? Call for Participation: 'Bringing MT to the User: Research Meets Translators' Third Joint EM+/CNGL Workshop (JEC2011)
by Венцислав Жечев ( Ventsislav Zhechev) 09 Sep '11

09 Sep '11

======================================== CALL FOR PARTICIPATION –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– “Bringing MT to the User: Research Meets Translators” Third Joint EM+/CNGL Workshop (JEC 2011) http://web.me.com/emcnglworkshop/JEC2011 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– The EuroMatrixPlus Project (http://www.euromatrixplus.eu) the Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL) (http://cngl.ie) the Directorate-General for Translation (DGT, European Commission) (http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/translation) and Autodesk (http://www.autodesk.ch) are co-organising the Third Joint EM+/CNGL Workshop (JEC 2011), entitled “Bringing MT to the User: Research Meets Translators”. The JEC 2011 workshop will be hosted by the Directorate General for Translation (DGT) (http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/translation) in Luxembourg on October 14th, 2011. In keeping with previous JECs, the format of the workshop is highly interactive with research paper presentations, invited talks and a panel discussion. PLEASE REGISTER Attendance of the workshop is free. If you wish to participate, please register at http://web.me.com/emcnglworkshop/JEC2011/Registration.html • Premise: Recent years have seen a revolution in MT triggered by the emergence of statistical approaches and improvements in translation quality. • Objectives: JEC 2011 brings together translators, users, academic and industrial MT researchers and developers to discuss issues that are most important in real world industrial settings and applications involving MT, but currently under-represented in research circles. • Invited Speakers: Lucia Specia, RIILP, UK: "Quality Estimation for Machine Translation: Different Users, Different Needs" Jörg Porsiel, Volkswagen, Germany: "Machine translation at Volkswagen" Arle Lommel, GALA Global, USA: Panel Discussion Chair • List of Accepted Papers for Oral Presentation: 1. "Online Self-Serve Access to State-of-the-Art SMT" Andy Way, Kenny Holden, Lee Ball and Gavin Wheeldon 2. "User-Focused Task-Oriented MT Evaluation for Wikis: A Case Study" Federico Gaspari, Antonio Toral, Sudip Kumar Naskar and Andy Way 3. "Towards Application of User-Tailored Machine Translation" Andrejs Vasiļjevs, Raivis Skadiņš and Inguna Skadiņa 4. "A Review of Machine Translation Tools from a Post-Editing Perspective" Lucas Vieira and Lucia Specia • To be Confirmed for Oral Presentation: 5. "Putting Hybrid Machine Translation into Practice through Large-Scale Involvement of Human Translators in SomeProject" Christian Federmann, Aljoscha Burchardt, Maja Popović, David Vilar and Eleftherios Avramidis 6. "Using Statistical Machine Translation for Computer-Aided Translation at the European Commission" Andreas Eisele and Caroline Lavecchia The preliminary workshop program is available at http://web.me.com/emcnglworkshop/JEC2011/Preliminary_Program.html Abstracts of the accepted papers are available at http://web.me.com/emcnglworkshop/JEC2011/List_of_Accepted_Papers.html • Deadlines (all 23:59 GMT -11): 30th September: Camera-ready deadline for accepted papers 6th October: On-line registration closes 14th October: Workshop takes place at DGT in Luxembourg Workshop Chair: Ventsislav Zhechev (Autodesk) Workshop Senior PC: Ventsislav Zhechev (Autodesk) Andreas Eisele (DGT) Philipp Koehn (Univ. of Edinburgh) Josef van Genabith, Declan Groves (CNGL) Program Committee: Submitted papers were reviewed by a joint industry–academia committee. Hello All--I have a grad student, not a member of this list yet, who is interested in representations of nuclear war, as part of this interest, is researching the "Fallout" video game series. He wonders if there's any existing scholarship that list members might point him to about 1) nuclear representations in video games, and 2) the need to teach video game literacy as either a subset of media literacy or a parallel to it. Any thoughts and suggestions much appreciated. AoIR is just around the corner! Thanks, Ken Hillis Professor of Media and Technology Studies Department of Communication Studies The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Chapel Hill, NC 27599-3285 USA

Professionalization Website
by Jonathan Sterne, Dr. 09 Sep '11

Hi Everyone, Apologies for crossposting. Since 1999, I have maintained a collection of web pages that provides links to useful resources for people on the academic job market in communication studies, though others in critical humanities fields may find the materials useful as well. In recent years, I have added material on other aspects of professional life and will continue to do so. You can find it at: http://sterneworks.org/Academe I am always looking for good suggestions for material to add to the site, and as you'll see, I have used it to archive some material that has been circulated in other fora. If you have a suggestion for a link or a document worth archiving, please email me at jonathan.sterne(a)mcgill.ca. Please note that I do not post or keep track of job ads, nor am I particularly interested in promoting commercial services. I intend to continue building the site, so suggestions for other areas to cover would be appreciated. There are also probably typos and other small errors on the new pages that need correction. Thanks for reading. Sincerely, --Jonathan -- http://sterneworks.org http://mcgill.ca/ahcs http://media.mcgill.ca

by Jonas Fransson 09 Sep '11

In my phd-project I plan to use pop-up web surveys on a couple of large online cultural heritage collections. Now I am looking for recommendations on software and web services that could be used for the surveys. Good or bad experiences, lessons learned and other tips are of interest.
