Social Media Collective research blog announcement
by Alice Marwick 06 Sep '11

06 Sep '11

Hi all, I am proud to announce that the Social Media Collective at Microsoft Research has launched our research blog! http://www.socialmediacollective.org For those of you who aren't familiar with our team, we are a group of academics at Microsoft Research who use qualitative methods like ethnography and content analysis to study a broad range of online phenomena like social network sites, video games, blogs, participatory culture, mobile devices, news and activism, and more. Microsoft Research is an industry-sponsored organization dedicated to conducting both basic and applied research in computer science and software engineering. Our group represents one part of MSR's effort to expand its research agenda in social science and the humanities. We're lucky enough to have had many AOIR-affiliated scholars visit and work with us over the last two years. On the blog, we talk about our research, comment on social media trends and events, post lectures and news stories, and hope to engage widely with academics and technologists alike. CFP: Children's Periodicals panel
by Patrick Cox 06 Sep '11

CFP Reminder Panel: “Fun With a Purpose”: Periodical Pedagogy and Early Edutainment Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA) 43nd Annual Convention, March 15-18, 2012 Rochester, New York – Hyatt Rochester Host Institution: St. John Fisher College Panel Description: Children’s periodicals published in the US over the last 300 years provide a wealth of textual and visual insight into US culture, pedagogy, and conceptions of childhood. The movement of traditional paper magazines to websites, from print on paper to digital content, both enriches and complicates this genre. This panel will engage with this under-examined body of texts in their most salient mode: as pedagogy. Children’s magazines have been used as instructional tools with lessons spanning literacy, manners, morality, crafts, citizenship, “mental hygiene,” and beyond, transmitting enduring lessons in an ephemeral format. By packaging their lessons in an entertaining and disposable blend of fiction, non-fiction, images, activities, games, jokes, and riddles, these magazines can be considered a print medium variety of (or precursor to?) “edutainment.” They are, as the motto of *Highlights for Children* puts it, “Fun with a purpose.” This panel is open to explorations of particular mechanisms, contents, and contexts of periodical pedagogy past and present, including examinations of child-readers’ participation in, subversion against, or re-creation of, that pedagogy. Possible topics from all disciplines may include: - histories or analysis of particular children’s periodicals - pedagogies in periodicals (ideological, curricular, religious, etc.) - convergences of traditional magazines and digital media - pedagogy, periodicals, and power - magazines produced by children - fiction and poetry in magazines - use of periodicals in classrooms - transnational periodicals - accidental pedagogy - production, distribution, and circulation of pedagogy - cross-cultural comparisons of periodical pedagogy - marginalia and ephemera - pedagogy in the home (or doctor’s office waiting room) - periodical pedagogy as pop culture - children’s responses to and uses of magazines - periodicals and/or their auxiliary products in the marketplace Please send 500-word abstracts to Patrick Cox at ptcox(a)camden.rutgers.edu by Sept 30. New Media? – publication announcement
by UG-Feldman, Zinaida 06 Sep '11

NEW MEDIA? RE-IMAGINING TECHNOLOGY, CULTURE AND THE SOCIAL explores the enduring fascination with the idea of novelty through a new media lens. The brand names in the discourse are familiar: Twitter, Facebook, Google, Digg, Tumblr, MySpace, to name a few. But these buzzwords reveal more than their commercial application. Critical analyses of these tools reveal ongoing dialogue and tensions between technology, culture and society. As these vectors – with ever-shifting contours, contested meanings and competing claims – overlap, they raise important questions about what can be claimed by ‘new media’ and why and how this term maintains currency and power within the social realm. Articles in this issue include: • Introduction: New media? Re-imagining technology, culture and the social (Zeena Feldman, City University London) • Novel noise? A systems-theoretical approach to Twitter (Richard Wigley, City University London) • Navigating digital publishing law without a ‘night lawyer’: an exploration of informal legal support networks (Judith Townend, City University London) • Power struggles in Korean cyberspace and Korean cyber asylum seekers (Dong-Hyun Song, Goldsmiths, University of London) • Designing scripts and performing Kurdishness in diaspora: the online-offline nexus (Jowan Mahmod, Goldsmiths, University of London) • Are new media democratic? (Jenny Kidd, City University London) • Reading the stranger in the age of social media (Zeena Feldman, City University London) This is a special issue of the Cultural Policy, Criticism and Management Research journal. All articles are available for free download on the journal's website, http://culturalpolicyjournal.org. .... Fwd: Critical Perspectives on Addiction (CFP)
by Jessie Daniels 05 Sep '11

05 Sep '11

This call for papers may be of interest to some on the list who may be doing critical work on Internet or video-game "addiction." ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Julie Netherland <julie.netherland(a)gmail.com> Date: Mon, Sep 5, 2011 at 1:53 PM Subject: Critical Perspectives on Addiction To: Jessie Daniels <jessiedanielsnyc(a)gmail.com> Below is a call for papers for an edited volume in the series Advances in Medical Sociology. The volume is seeking contributions that examine the expanding meanings and uses of "addiction" to explain a range of behaviors, including those related to technology and media. Contributions that explore t.v., internet, cell/smart phone, video gaming, and social media "addiction" are especially welcome. *Call for Papers: Critical Perspectives on Addiction* (Volume 14 of Advances in Medical Sociology<http://www.emeraldinsight.com/products/books/series.htm?id=1057-6290> ) Editor: Julie Netherland (City University of New York Graduate Center) Series Editor: Professor Barbara Katz Rothman Publisher: Emerald Group Publishing Our understandings of addiction are rapidly changing. New technologies and biomedical treatments are reconfiguring addiction as a brain disease, and the concept of “addiction” is expanding to cover an ever widening array of substances and behaviours, from food to shopping. As addiction has taken up the discourse of neuroscience, gained some legitimacy within mainstream medicine, and become popularized through reality televisions shows and media attention to celebrity “addicts,” its cultural resonance has increased, but the meaning of “addiction” remains contested and confused. Despite new efforts to medicalize addiction, moral and punitive frameworks for addressing addictions persist, and theories about addiction are also increasingly framed within neoliberal and public health ideologies that emphasize the individual’s responsibility to make him or herself “well.” This edited volume of Advances in Medical Sociology aims to look critically at how addiction has been framed historically, how it being characterized and understood through contemporary cultural representations, how new treatments and technologies are reconfiguring addiction, and how “addiction” is being expanded beyond illicit drugs and alcohol to explain phenomena such as “excessive” eating and gambling and the exponential rise in prescription narcotic use. This volume also seeks to examine how medical, behavioural and punitive frameworks for understanding and treating addiction come together to shape and control “addicts.” Building on a rich sociological literature about drugs and addiction, this volume aims to interrogate the meaning(s) of addiction and critically examine the ways in which addiction is used as a lens for understanding individual behaviour, deviance, illness, politics, and policy. Empirical pieces are especially encouraged. This edited volume aims to be a benchmark text in the sociology of addiction, bringing together a broad array of critical perspectives and issues. Therefore, we are calling for papers addressing a wide variety of topics pertaining to the sociology of addiction, including - but not limited to: · Historical and new efforts to medicalize addiction · Critical interrogations of medical, public health, scientific, behavioural, moral, and punitive frameworks for understanding and/or treating addiction · Changing perceptions of addiction and addictive disorders within different settings and in the broader society · The rise of novel applications of addiction frameworks (e.g., obesity as caused by ‘food addiction’) and novel treatments (e.g., deep brain stimulation, vaccines, and psychopharmaceuticals, like buprenorphine and naltrexone) · Critical analyses of non-substance addictions (e.g., gambling, shopping, sex, internet, etc...) and how these support and/or challenge traditional notions of addiction · Representations of addiction in the media and popular culture · Addiction treatment interventions and how they reflect and/or shape larger sociopolitcal contexts · The relationships between frameworks for understanding addiction, interventions to address it, and subjectivity · The relationship between addiction and larger sociological constructs, such as racism, gender, structure/agency, etc... · The rise in addiction to prescription medications and how this challenges existing conceptual, policy and treatment approaches to drug addiction. This list should be treated as suggestive rather than prescriptive. Papers addressing other relevant topics are welcome as are informal inquiries about proposed topics. Potential contributors should email a 500-750 word abstract by October 3, 2011 to: julie.netherland(a)gmail.com . Informal inquiries to this address are also welcome. Name and institutional affiliation of author(s) should also be supplied, including full contact details of the main author. Proposals will be reviewed by the editor, and authors notified by November 7, 2011. The deadline for full submissions (7500-8500 words) will be February 7, 2012. Publication of the volume is expected in mid- to late 2012.
