JCMC Call for Papers on Social Media and Communication in the Workplace

JCMC Special Issue Call for Papers: Social Media and Communication in the Workplace Guest Editors Charles Steinfield, Michigan State University, steinfie(a)msu.edu Marleen Huysman, VU University Amsterdam, m.h.huysman(a)vu.nl Paul Leonardi, Northwestern University, leonardi(a)northwestern.edu Social media technologies have the potential to change important communication processes within organizations. As social media proliferate, it seems likely that organizational members will use them to carry out socialization, identification, collaboration, innovation, relationship development, persuasion, learning, social capital formation, and knowledge sharing processes. The explosive growth of these technologies has not gone unnoticed by communication and information scholars, as evidenced by the equally rapid growth in articles related to the uses and impacts of social media, including a prior special issue on social network sites here in JCMC (vol. 13, no. 1, 2007). Much of this prior work has been conducted among student populations or in the context of advertising and marketing, and, as such, has not focused on social media use in organizations. Studies that do take the organization into account, generally relate to such fields as information systems marketing, and strategic management, with the aim of understanding how social media can be leveraged to enhance business performance. Less well studied, however, is the influence of social media on a range of organizational communication processes within workplace contexts. Focus of the Special Issue We invite submissions to a special issue of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication focusing on research on social media within the organizational context. Our aim is to highlight research that explores how the affordances of social media interact with organizational contexts, behaviors, and communication practices to influence processes of interest to organizational scholars. We are interested in submissions that enable us to better understand how social media affordances make a difference in workplace settings. Affordances are the result of the intertwining of capabilities provided by the technologies and the actions taken by the actors using them. Papers are especially welcome that integrate the material aspects of the technology with its use in organizational communication processes. Submissions that focus on such topics as the role of social media in attracting customers or influencing sales will be given less priority as these topics are extensively covered in other outlets. We are intentionally not providing a definition of social media in this call for papers, but ask authors to do so within their manuscripts. We encourage authors to be explicit about what it is about the media they are studying that makes them "social" and to provide definitions that are robust enough to endure over time. We encourage diverse methodological approaches, including both qualitative and quantitative studies. Conceptual papers as well as empirical studies are welcome. All papers must be theoretically motivated. Submission Process and Author Guidelines Papers will undergo an initial screening by the three special issue editors in an accelerated review process. A set of selected papers will then be invited for submission to the JCMC system and will undergo a formal review led by the special issue editors in conjunction with JCMC reviewers. Submissions should follow JCMC formatting guidelines available at the journal site (http://www.wiley.com/bw/submit.asp?ref=1083-6101) and should be sent via email to the special issue editors by February 1, 2012. Initial screening decisions will be completed by March 15, 2012, and selected papers must be submitted to the JCMC system at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jcmc by April 15, 2012. Final acceptance decisions will be completed by July 15, 2012.

Definitely a problem Debbie. I'm writing up my PhD referring to web crawl data and web site content analysis from 2009. I'm using the Internet Archive's Wayback machine whilst referring back to my notes. I have some screen snapshots of sites at the time but not a complete set. The Archive's preserved copy of the site often doesn't capture all of the elements of the site however making the process problematic at times. I wasn't aware of Zotero's functionality for taking a page snapshot, so that's helpful (thanks William). If a site is no longer available I'm citing it with the date accessed and a comment like "now defunct". Thanks for the replies. William - yes. Zotero is great I use it now for most web docs that I need a snapshot of, but unfortunately no use for my current dilemma. Mark - I've been able to get some off the Wayback Machine but not all. Alejandro - yes, I have the original date and that was what I included but the editors are questioning that since the sites no longer exist they are saying that date is irrelevant. Any other ideas? This is going to be an issue that will be faced by many of us in the not too distant future. The various style guides don't offer much advice but I have seen various conversations about the issue and it even has a name - linkrot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Link_rot) Cheers Debbie

I believe Steve Jones is quoted in this article that appeared back in 2005: Carlson, S. (2005). "Scholars note 'decay' of citations to online references." The Chronicle of Higher Education 51(28): A.30. Below are my notes from the article: "After analyzing more than 1,126 citations that made references to Web address, taken from online verisons of five prestigious communication-studies journals, 373 of the links, or 33 percent, were found to be dead. Of the 753 links that worked, only 424 pointed to information pertinent to the citation" (Bugela and Dimitrova, cited in Carlson 2005). "Anthony T. Grafton, a professor of history at Princeton University who has written a book about footnotes, has read a draft of the study and agrees that 'citation decay is a 'real problem'. "I'm looking at a world in which documentation and verification melt into air," he says. He sees this problem growing, as today's students rely more on online sources. (personal communication). As you note, link rot or decay is a real problem. There is a body of scholarship referring to the problem of irretrievable data in the webmetrics community. I refer you to work from Mike Thelwall and colleagues at the University of Wolverhampton, and Paul Wouters and colleagues at the Virtual Knowledge Studio, the Netherlands (cf. the notion of 'internet time' where links come and go. From a few years of watching "Time Team" a UK production that focuses on recovering past archeological finds, as well as advice given from a forensic anthropologist working on the so-called Hobbit of Flores, Indonesia, for longevity, carve it in stone. Hi List, I'm revising some previous work for an upcoming book chapter and some of the websites cited in my original research no longer exist. I'd like to keep the content - mainly blog posts - as it provides context to some of my points? If I include it how should I cite it i.e. should I write 'website no longer available' or something else, and should I even include the url? Thanks in anticipation Brainstrust! Hi Debbie, Just as another aside - I've had a number of political speeches and documents that I have cited in my PhD but with a change of Government in the last few years - these have since become unavailable on the original URLs. However, I've managed to find some of them on other sites - so depending on whether you are wishing to locate web pages or specific texts - you might be able to google the text and locate it elsewhere. I've also used screenshots which is worth doing at the time because so many of my texts for analysis have disappeared or been placed in another location. This is particularly iimportant if images and the look of a web page is important for your analysis. Hope that helps. Regards Philippa Philippa Smith PhD Candidate Institute of Culture, Discourse & Communication AUT University Auckland NEW ZEALAND >>> William Huber <whuber(a)ucsd.edu> 08/25/11 2:26 PM >>> An imperfect solution is to use GMU's Zotero to manage your bibliography, and to create a snapshot for each web page you cite. CFP RC10 Electronic Democracy - IPSA World Congress - July 8-12, 2012
by Stephanie Wojcik 24 Aug '11

24 Aug '11

Call for papers - RC10 "Electronic Democracy" - International Political Science Association (IPSA)World Congress Madrid (Spain), July 8-12, 2012 The 22nd World Congress of the IPSA will take place in Madrid (Spain) from 8 to 12 July 2012. Use www.ipsa.org to submit a paper. Deadline for paper proposals and abstracts is October 7, 2011. Panel 1. Open government Chairs: Richard Engstrom, Duke University (USA) - richard.engstrom(a)duke.edu Stéphanie Wojcik, University of Paris Est Créteil (France) – stephanie.wojcik(a)u-pec.fr Discussant: Albert J. Meijer, Utrecht University (A.J.Meijer(a)uu.nl) (TBC) Calls for governments to provide open, easy-to-use and largely free-of-charge access to public data have grown in recent years - such as the 'Transparency and Open Government' programme initiated under Obama’s presidency in the US or the Public Data Corporation supported by the UK Cabinet Office (2011) while the European Commission, through the SEMIC.EU platform, is promoting the idea of Linked Government Metadata (2010). Making public information and data more widely available is indeed thought to support democratic citizenship by increasing transparency and accountability in government, allowing individuals and groups to monitor and evaluate particular policies, services, and the performance of government in general. While little systematic research has been done on open government so far, initiatives associated with the term have generated opposing views. This panel issue is concerned with the concrete benefits and the downsides of the various opendata initiatives worldwide. Which public policies and strategies of implementation are known? Are European initiatives adopting such strategies or are there new instruments? Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - Surveillance, data privacy and regulations - Transparency, accountability and civic engagement - Production of services and public goods and changing roles of government, public authorities, business, civil society and citizens - Technological and organizational challenges of open government Panel 2. E democracy and deliberation Chairs: Raphael Kies, (University of Luxembourg) - raphael.kies(a)uni.lu Norbert Kersting, (University of Münster, Germany), -norbert.kersting(a)uni-marburg.de Dialogical deliberative instruments are vitalizing democracy. Participatory budgeting, deliberative polls, forums and other participatory instruments are implemented . These instruments are often combined with e-participation tools. Internet conference, open space online, participatory budgeting online, e-petitions, blogs, web forums etc. are implemented to support or to substitute traditional instruments for participation. This raises the question about the quality of deliberation in the internet. The panel will try to categorize, analyze and evaluate the different tools. Panel 3. Electronic voting re-vitalized? Chairs: Richard Niemi, (University Rochester, USA) - niemi(a)rochester.edu Josep Reniu, (University of Barcelona, Spain) - jreniu(a)ub.edu Discussant: Alexander Trechsel Electronic voting and internet voting seems to be reinvigorated. This panel discusses strategies of national and supranational institutions such as Council of Europe regarding Electronic and internet voting. New experiments in Mexico, Argentina, new trends in India etc will be presented. Latest developments in Norway in the local election will be analyzed. New experiences in Estonia, Switzerland, USA, Russia evaluated. Panel 4. e-Revolution and Pluralism in Countries of the 2011 "Arab spring": Egypt and Tunisia joint panel with RC 16 Socio political pluralism and RC 10 e-democracy Chairs: Rainer Eisfeld (RC 16) (University Osnabrueck, Germany) -rainer.eisfeld(a)uni-osnabrueck.de Norbert Kersting (RC 10) (University of Münster, Germany), -norbert.kersting(a)uni-marburg.de Paper or discussant: Jason Abbott A pluralist alliance of various civil society groups – workers, women, urban professionals, moderate islamists, underemployed (particularly from among the youth) – with different, sometimes overlapping, grievances, ousted the previous regimes in Tunisia and Egypt. Largely mobilised via the Internet, these groups have different interests and pursue differing political projects for their countries’ post-revolutionary future. The panel will trace sources of several important Egyptian and Tunesian protest groups’ politicization and subsequent mobilisation, also attempting to spell out implications of their projects for the post-Ben Ali and post-Mubarak eras. Are there lessons to be learned for the rest of the world? RC10 website : http://rc10.ipsa.org/ Contact : Norbert Kersting (norbert.kersting(a)uni-marburg.de)
