by michael gurstein 31 Aug '11

31 Aug '11

This is a great event and there is the added (and superlative) bonus of getting to know a unique part of the world! Mike -----Original Message----- From: Roger Harris [mailto:roger.harris@rogharris.org] Sent: Tuesday, August 30, 2011 8:41 PM To: 'Roger Harris' Subject: IIIrd eBario Knowledge Fair Call for Papers: Third eBario Knowledge Fair 2011: ICTs for Indigenous Peoples 16-18 November 2011, Bario, Sarawak Malaysia About the eBario Knowledge Fair The e-Bario Knowledge Fair (eBKF) is a bi-annual conference, held in the village of Bario, Malaysia, which showcases the use of ICTs for rural development. It is conducted in conjunction with the local community, bringing together researchers, practitioners and policy makers with the residents of Bario and the wider Kelabit indigenous ethnic community. The eBKF is a pioneering example of Development Conferencing, the process by which development specialists articulate their plans and share their ideas together with the people whose lives they are trying to improve, and in their own surroundings. Theme The Third Knowledge Fair will adopt a theme of Technological Innovation for Indigenous Peoples. As part of this, and with the assistance of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Knowledge Fair will feature the Asian recipients of grants under the IFAD's Indigenous Peoples Assistance Facility (26 projects in 13 countries) with particular reference to their potential use of Information and Communication Technologies and sources of renewable energy in support of development for Indigenous Peoples. Additional contributions are also sought that can stimulate further debate on the applicability and deployment of these technologies towards solutions to the specific problems faced by Indigenous Peoples. As eBario has been awarded Malaysia's first license to operate a community radio station, the Third eBario Knowledge Fair will include a focus on the use of community radio for engaging with indigenous issues. Suggested topics The topics for regular sessions include, but are not limited to: Preservation of cultural heritage with ICTs ICTs and environmental protection ICTs and climate change Giving voice; new media for public debate Traditional knowledge; collection, preservation and intellectual property rights Creativity, adaptation and indigenisation of ICTs for social transformation Indigenising ICT4D ICTs for community mapping and community memory Renewable energy for ICTs http://ebarioknowledgefair.org/ Dr. Roger Harris Consultant in ICTs for poverty reduction and rural development. http://www.rogharris.org/ Director Business Development; eBario Sdn Bhd http://www.ebario.org/

FW: Need expert advise - Internet and social behavior
by Janna Anderson 30 Aug '11

Perhaps people on the AoIR list have some advice for Kate... ------ Forwarded Message From: Екатерина <kate_kot(a)ukr.net> Date: Wed, 31 Aug 2011 00:07:36 +0300 Subject: need expert advise > Dear colleagues, I'm studying at T. Shevchenko Kiev National University (Ukraine) - graduate (first year) at the department of methods and methodologies of sociological researches. Also I work at online research agency as a analytic. Aproximate topic of my thesis is "Methodological grounding of internet audience research", BUT in Ukraine there are no advanced scientists in this sphere and nobody can't advise me on what questions I should focus on, what is more or less important etc. I hope you'll be able to direct my research vector in the right direction. I want to show to Ukrainian scientific community that Internet audience is a source of sociologiacal information and we should study this audience, their socio-demografic characteristics, behavoir using different methods, techniques (I'm interesting in combination of site-centric and user-centric measurment). No one takes this subject seriously and I intend to prove the falsity of this position. Because, in my opinion, investigation of internet audience is very important not only for marketing goals, but for socioilogical especially. > > P.S.: I am afraid that my work will be reduced to a banal and somehow not quite significant for the science conclusions. > > > Thank you in advance. > > Kind regards, > Kate Tkachuk > Ukarine, Kiev > > +3 8 (066) 149 49 49 > SKYPE - tkachuk_kateryna ------ End of Forwarded Message

graduate student funding options
by danah boyd 29 Aug '11

29 Aug '11

In the world of sciences, there are lots of funding programs that exist beyond a graduate student's home institution. The US's NSF, for example, has all sorts of programs that incoming students can apply for and have their entire graduate school paid for without placing any burden on their home institution. (In lots of programs, this makes taking someone with an NSF grant an extra special appeal.) I'm trying to get a sense of what programs exist out there in the social scientists / internet studies / digital humanities space. I'm mainly looking for programs that help fund people to attend US institutions (whether they are US citizens or not). I recognize that the norm is for the department itself to fund through faculty grants, TA-ships, and university dissertation fellowships, but I'm wondering if there are non-institution specific programs out there in the amorphous field we call internet studies. (Feel free to send info to me offline; I will happily compile and share back with you.) danah

Games for Health Europe – Call for content and participation
by Alex Gekker 29 Aug '11

29 Aug '11

** Apologies for cross-posting. Dear friends, Games for Health Europe is the upcoming first international conference on the use of games and simulation in health, medicine and well being. GFHEU has extended its call for content, in the form of posters, talks, case studies and anything creative related to the topic at hand. The conference will be held in Amsterdam on October 24 & 25. Registration for the conference outside of submission is also possible, of course, and discounts can be discussed with interested organizations. The call for content: http://www.gamesforhealtheurope.org/callforcontent/ Registration: http://www.gamesforhealtheurope.org/register Speakers list: http://www.gamesforhealtheurope.org/program/speakers For all enquiries please feel free to contact Alex Gekker at alex(a)gamesforhealtheurope.org *Short description:* Bringing together academics, medical professionals and video game industry leaders we strive to engage them in an innovative and groundbreaking discussion on the impacts games, simulations and game-like techniques might have on us all in the near future. This is the first conference on European soil, after Games for Health conferences have been taking place annually in Boston for the past seven years. Participants are encouraged to bring their own issues and concerns to the discussion – the call for content is now open! By providing the framework during and after the conference, we hope to facilitate creative solutions for problems in healthcare, mental well-being and medical training. The central theme is: How games & simulations can improve health(care) and make it affordable. The conference consists of five main tracks, with additional tracks and topics interwoven throughout the program: Cognitive and emotional health (mental health) Stress and depressions are often referred to as the plagues of the 21st century. In this track we discuss how games in their different forms and platforms can contribute to alleviating those conditions among target audiences. Participatory health Games for Health founder Ben Sawyer sees the medical professional as an “interface” between the patient and the health system. In this track we ask how can gaming techniques improve this interface, and provide more engaging, encompassing experience for the individual with their own health. Exergaming, active gaming & fitness >From the Nintendo Wii and to the PS Move and Xbox Kinect, games for training and exercise are filling or lives. Similarly, sports applications for mobile devices and smart phones are on the rise. In this track we discuss the long term implications of using those platforms for health and fitness. Rehabilitation games Patients going through rehabilitation after disease and injury are experiencing pain and discomfort. By using games both as distraction and rehabilitation techniques, this track explores the possibility of helping them. Medical education, medical training, medical modeling & medical simulation In a world where the US military is recruiting hardcore gamers for support roles, video games have been recognized as a tool for improving one’s skills and reflexes. This track explores the role of games in providing training and practice for medical personnel. Additional inforamtion on www.gamesforhealtheurope.org
