CFP: Special issue of JCMC on Participatory Websites
by Joe Walther 23 Aug '11

23 Aug '11

Call for Papers: Special issue of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, "Communication Approaches to Participatory Websites and User-Generated Content." Joseph B. Walther, guest editor. Among the most important developments in CMC are participatory websites featuring user-generated content (e.g., Web 2.0 sites with product/seller reviews, social network sites that invite "friends'" contributions, talk-back features on online news sites, wikis, etc.). This issue of JCMC will focus on the extension, adaptation, and application of theoretical approaches to the uses and effects of these messaging systems. We invite evidence-based papers that address the creation and impacts of user-generated content, system-aggregated indicators of user input, and/or their interplay with owner-generated content, on the perceptions, attitudes, and behavior of participants and viewers of such sites. Criteria for acceptance will involve the degree of exemplification of the communication aspects of the topic, and the degree to which articles join theoretical analysis with rigorous empirical investigation. Manuscripts will be reviewed anonymously by a special editorial board and other JCMC reviewers; authors must prepare submissions to facilitate anonymous review. Submissions must not exceed 30 pages, and must reflect APA (6th ed.) style. Deadline for submission is December 10, 2011. Please contact the editor with any questions, or to submit manuscripts as attachments, at <mailto:jcmc@cmcresearch.org> jcmc(a)cmcresearch.org. === Joseph B. 'Internet Co-Regulation: European Law, Regulatory Governance and Legitimacy in Cyberspace'
by chris marsden 23 Aug '11

23 Aug '11

Apologies for any cross-posting: My latest book was published by Cambridge University Press on 18 August 2011: 'Internet Co-Regulation: European Law, Regulatory Governance and Legitimacy in Cyberspace'. It can be ordered at www.cambridge.org/9781107003484 The brief description is: "Marsden argues that co-regulation is the defining feature of the Internet in Europe. Co-regulation offers the state a route back into questions of legitimacy, governance and human rights, thereby opening up more interesting conversations than a static no-regulation versus state regulation binary choice. The basis for the argument is empirical investigation, based on a multi-year, European Commission-funded study and is further reinforced by the direction of travel in European and English law and policy, including the Digital Economy Act 2010. He places Internet regulation within the regulatory mainstream, as an advanced technocratic form of self- and co-regulation which requires governance reform to address a growing constitutional legitimacy gap. The literature review, case studies and analysis analyze policymaking in Brussels, London and Washington, revealing the extent to which states, firms and, increasingly, citizens are developing a new type of regulatory bargain." New book: Localizing the Internet
by John Postill 23 Aug '11

23 Aug '11

Dear colleagues I am very pleased to announce the publication by Berghahn of my book Localizing the Internet: An Anthropological Account. The book is based on fieldwork in a suburb of Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) named Subang Jaya. The focus of the study is Subang Jaya's field of residential affairs, a digitally mediated domain in which residents, civil servants, politicians, online journalists and other social agents appropriate Internet technologies to pursue local goals. The analysis covers the complex articulations between personal networking and social fields, the uneven diffusion and circulation of new digital technologies and contents, intra- and inter-field political crises, and the emergence of new forms of residential sociality. "[Localizing the Internet] will quickly stimulate a spate of innovative research on the Internet because it provides conceptual tools that open new avenues of study. The key idea, “the field of residential affairs,” is very rich, and I particularly like the way Postill connects this new area of anthropology (internet studies) to the classic works of the Manchester School.” · Andrew Arno, University of Hawai’i More information about this title can be found on the Berghahn website: http://www.berghahnbooks.com/title.php?rowtag=PostillLocalizing If you are interested in obtaining a copy with a 25% discount, please get in touch with Abigail Major at abigail.major(a)berghahnbooks.com. This is a limited time offer available only to individuals and expiring Friday, September 30, 2011.
