Neighbor to Neighbor Networking Online, Reaching Diverse and Immigrant Communities
by Steven Clift 24 Jun '11

24 Jun '11

We have a new in-depth presentation on our neighborhood-level Issues Forum work: http://blog.e-democracy.org/posts/1215 (the audio version is at the bottom) While Hampton's i-neighbors.org site and the practice of Front Porch Forum recommends small typically private (not in Google) covering areas with around 500 residents, we've found our sweet spot at ~10,000 residents, in very public (therefore accessible) online spaces. We've further found that when you reach 10% of households (one member ~one household) the online exchange becomes quite self-generative. I am curious if others have explored these variables and compared either the user satisfaction with these differing models or any differences in the content exchanged? We do see real value private small scale electronic block clubs (covering under 100 households) out there that we are exploring - http://beneighbors.org - but with our Inclusive Social Media work - http://e-democracy.org/inclusion -with lower income, high immigrant communities, the word of mouth "virtual gated community" approach in larger areas seems to work against that goal. (On the other hand, the concern about over exposure online can be a limiting factor for many, but our foundation is civic engagement in public life.) So any researchers working on these questions out there? Let's connect offline and here: http://e-democracy.org/locals We'd love to see some deeper analysis of what is going on across our dynamic network - http://tcneighbors.org including my own neighborhood with over 750 members reaching ~17% of households - http://e-democracy.org/se . On a related note, I'd love to put a number to the comparable "likers" needed on a community-based Facebook Page, then Groups and neighborhood e-mail lists to generate similar traffic. Perhaps the best against the best ... my sense is that you need 10+ likers to generate the value of one e-list member in critical mass online spaces. It could be much higher. Facebook in Rural Communities, Elected Officials and the Friend Cap
by Steven Clift 24 Jun '11

24 Jun '11

Is anyone out there researching the use of Facebook in rural communities and its connection to political and/or public life? When many of your friends are the "who's who" in a town of say under 20K how does this mix with public life. Are thing more or less transparent? Are connections among the "in" crowd excluding folks on the other side of the tracks or are socio-economic layers starting to mingle more? On another track with the tornados in North Minneapolis our Mayor was unable to "like" the Facebook page about it because he already had 5,000 friends. Your cap seems to combine friend and page liking. Folks were asking the mayor to respond but he couldn't.

cfp: cultures in virtual worlds
by jeremy hunsinger 23 Jun '11

23 Jun '11

distribute as appropriate, apologies for x-posting -jh Cultures in virtual worlds A special issue of the New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia Guest-edited by Jeremy Hunsinger and Adrienne Massanari Virtual worlds (VW) embody cultures, their artefacts, and their praxes; these new and old spaces of imagination and transformation allow humans to interact in spatial dimensions. Within these spaces, culture manifests with the creation, representation, and circulation of meaningful experiences. But virtual worlds are not novel in that regard, nor should we make the mistake to assume that they are novel in themselves. Virtual experiences have been around in some respect for hundreds of years, and virtual worlds based in information technology have existed for at least 40 years. The current generation of virtual worlds, with roots over four decades old in studies of virtual reality, computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), sociology, cultural studies, and related topics, provide for rich and occasionally immersive environments where people become enculturated within the world sometimes as richly as the rest of their everyday lives. We seek research that encounters and investigates cultures in virtual worlds in its plurality and in its richness. To that end, we invite papers covering the breadth of the topic of cultures in and of virtual worlds. Some possible areas/approaches of inquiry: 1. How culture of virtual worlds affect relationships 2. VW interfaces and culture/s 3. Hidden subcultures/communities in virtual worlds 4. Ages and VW cultures 5. Emic and etic experiences of virtual worlds 6. Producing VW cultures 7. Traditional cultural/critical studies inquiries of VWs 8. Transnational or cosmopolitan cultures in/of VWs While all forms of scholarship and research are welcome, we prefer theoretically and empirically grounded studies. We seek a Special Issue that exemplifies methodological pluralism and scholarly diversity. The use of visual evidence and representations is also encouraged. We especially seek pieces that investigate virtual worlds that have received little scholarly attention. Submission guidelines This special issue is Guest-Edited by Jeremy Hunsinger (Virginia Tech) and Adrienne Massanari (Loyola University Chicago). Queries regarding the Special Issue should be directed to them at jhuns(a)vt.edu and amassanari(a)luc.edu. The Guest-Editors welcome contributions from both new researchers and those who are more well-established. Submitted manuscripts will be subject to peer review. Length of papers will vary as per disciplinary expectations, but we encourage articles of around 7000 words (longer articles may be possible, if warranted). Short discussion papers of around 3000 words on relevant subjects are also welcomed as 'Technical Notes'. Detailed author submission guidelines are available online at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/journal.asp?issn=1361-4568&linktype=44. Papers must be submitted via the journal’s online submissions system: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tham Please indicate that your submission is for the Special Issue on Culture in Virtual Worlds. The special issue will be published in summer 2012. Important dates: November 11, 2011 Paper submission deadline February 10, 2012 Author notification May 5, 2012 Final copy due Summer 2012 Publication Jeremy Hunsinger Center for Digital Discourse and Culture Virginia Tech Words are things; and a small drop of ink, falling like dew upon a thought, produces that which makes thousands, perhaps millions, think. --Byron

Fwd: CFP Deadline extended - CHArt annual conference 2011- The Challenge of Ubiquity in Digital Culture

Begin forwarded message: > From: Vicky Brown <victoria.brown(a)HOA.OX.AC.UK> > Date: June 21, 2011 2:11:22 PM GMT+01:00 > To: DIGITAL-PRESERVATION(a)JISCMAIL.AC.UK > Subject: CFP Deadline extended - CHArt annual conference 2011- The Challenge of Ubiquity in Digital Culture > Reply-To: Vicky Brown <victoria.brown(a)HOA.OX.AC.UK> > > With apologies for cross-posting: > > > Please note the deadline extension to 1 July 2011. > > The Challenge of Ubiquity in Digital Culture > > CHArt 27th Annual Conference, Thursday 17th and Friday 18th November 2011, London venue to be confirmed > www.chart.ac.uk > > Utopian hopes for the ubiquity of digital and networked technologies leading to a more transparent and democratic society are being met by expressions of concern about their implications for art. Nicholas Bourriaud has observed that such technologies can bring about a “collective desire to create new areas of conviviality and introduce new types of transaction with regard to the cultural object”. However, others perceive an imminent threat, characterised by such terms as a digital 'deluge' or 'oblivion’. CHArt is interested to examine critically both positive views and apocalyptic concerns about the implications of the widespread merger of telecommunications and computer technology in society for art, its history and practice. > > We are looking for papers that engage with issues including, but not limited to: > The implications of the ubiquity of digital and network technologies for evaluating what constitutes an original work of art and the originality of its creator(s). > What effects have these technologies had on valuing art in terms of its aesthetic quality? > What impact have real-time technologies had for the creation, ownership and distribution of culture? > What are the impacts of the widespread proliferation and use of such technologies on curatorial practice and the processes of selecting, preserving and enabling access to art? > How have they affected both the content and methods of teaching the history and practice of art? > Are other disciplines and areas of society affected by art mediated by real-time technologies? How? > We are particularly interested in work that engages with such questions and extends beyond simply understanding digital and network technologies as transparent conduits of data and information. CHArt encourages proposals addressing complex artefacts that, in Friedrich Kittler's words, “determine our situation”. > > Contributions are welcomed from all sections of the CHArt community on the intersection between art and art history and semantic web developments; cloud computing; data mining; screen scraping; crowd sourcing; mashups; and freely available sites that enable data and images to be stored and accessed. > > CHArt seeks papers from art historians, artists, architects and architectural theorists and historians, curators, conservators, computing scientists, scientists, cultural and media theorists, archivists, technologists, educationalists and philosophers. > > Postgraduate students are encouraged to submit a proposal. CHArt is able to offer assistance with the conference fees for up to three student delegates. Priority will be given to students whose papers are accepted for presentation. An application form and proof of university enrolment will be required. For further details about the Helene Roberts Bursary please emailanna.bentkowska(a)kcl.ac.uk. > > Submissions should be in the form of a 300-400 word synopsis of the proposed paper with brief biographical information (no more than 200 words) of presenter/s, and should be emailed tochart(a)kcl.ac.uk by Friday July 1st 2011. > > Notification of paper acceptance: 1 September 2011 > Submission of papers: 17 October 2011 Jeremy Hunsinger Center for Digital Discourse and Culture Virginia Tech Live without dead time. -graffitti Paris 1968

Re: [Air-L] Asking help about Facebook censorship criteria
by Seda Guerses 21 Jun '11

in the uk the facebook pages of various anti-cuts groups were shut down before the royal wedding. I believe facebook claimed that they had violated the terms of use. however, one of the affected groups (the goldmiths students) made a freedom of information (FOI) requests to find out more. The response to the foi said: "These are questions relating to the operational policing of extremist organisations and as such the standard Neither Confirm Nor Deny approach applies. This means that the MPS will not confirm either way, whether communications with Facebook exist or whether requests regarding this matter were/were not made." So, it seems that facebook uses the tou infringement as a blanket excuse for a variety of take down practices. you may find more information here: response to foi: http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/suspension_of_facebook_profiles#incom… statements and petition: http://goldsmithsinoccupation.wordpress.com/2011/04/29/stop-the-facebookpur… https://network23.org/facebookpurge/
