CALL FOR WORKS - DeSForM 2012:MEANING.MATTER.MAKING
by Anne Galloway 02 May '11

02 May '11

Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce DeSForM 2012:MEANING.MATTER.MAKING, the 7th International Workshop on Design & Semantics of Form & Movement, to be held 18-20 April, 2012, at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. http://desform2012.schoolofdesign.ac.nz/ DeSForM was conceived as “the first international conference seeking to present current research into the nature, character and behaviour of emerging new typologies of co-designed, content rich, connected and intelligent objects within adaptive systems.” (http://www.northumbria.ac.uk/sd/academic/scd/research/desformhome/desformwh…) It is a global conference with truly international participation, as witnessed in the recent success of the 2009 DeSForM conference in Taipei, Taiwan and in 2010 in Lucerne, Switzerland. DeSForM 2012:MEANING.MATTER.MAKING will continue this tradition of diversity and exchange, bringing its sphere of influence for the first time to the Southern Hemisphere. DeSForM 2012 workshop and conference will be hosted by Victoria University School of Design in Wellington, New Zealand from 18th–20th April 2012. In reaching out to the many innovative schools, businesses, designers, researchers and cultural organizations in the Southern Hemisphere and beyond, DeSForM 2012:MEANING.MATTER.MAKING will grow the organisation’s community, offering new horizons, insights and audiences. The School and its location in New Zealand’s ‘Creative Capital’ embodies many of the ideals behind DeSForM as a pioneering forum for exchanging knowledge and ideas, unburdened by tradition and accepted ways of doing things. Our South Pacific location has inspired a commitment to digital technologies, which offer real opportunities to overcome distance with new forms of communication, interaction and enhanced experiences. As a result the city has a colourful and growing community of pioneers in digital design, fabrication and distribution, game and interface designers, software specialists, technology developers, usability experts, social networking service providers, film makers and special effects researchers, as exemplified by the internationally recognized leader, Weta Digital. Against this backdrop, DeSForM 2012:MEANING.MATTER.MAKING invites participation from practice-led researchers and research-led practitioners from academia and industry, as well as representatives from the many disciplines, perspectives and interpretations integral to the design and semantics of form and movement. Extended abstracts for proposed research papers, performances and demonstrations are due 19 August, 2011. More information and submission details are available on the conference website. http://desform2012.schoolofdesign.ac.nz/call-for-works/ We look forward to receiving your submissions and to seeing you in Wellington in 2012! CfP RDSRP '11 - Deadline extended to May 15
by Peter Kraker 02 May '11

02 May '11

(apologies for cross-posting) Special Track on Recommendation, Data Sharing, and Research Practices in Science 2.0 (RDSRP '11) 7 September 2011 Graz, Austria http://i-know.at/RDSRP Deadline extended to 15 May 2011! Science 2.0 has become an umbrella term for the involvement of the web in science. It spans from the utilization of Web 2.0 tools and technologies in research to a more open and sharing approach to science. Some definitions of Science 2.0 even include notions of a methodological change due to the abundance of data, and the nature of the socio-technical systems on the web. For this special track, we would like to address three issues in Science 2.0 that have proven both promising and challenging at the same time: 1. The management of scientific data, both primary and secondary data (such as publication metadata, and other scientific content on the web) as a precondition for Science 2.0. 2. The recommendation of people and resources as a consequential next step in an exponentially growing scientific environment. 3. The change in scientific practices due to the involvement of Science 2.0 tools and technologies in the research process and the effects this has on science itself. This one-day special track is a program item of i-KNOW 2011, the 11th International Conference on Knowledge Management and Knowledge Technologies which takes place in Graz, Austria from September 7th to September 9th 2011. The workshop provides an interdisciplinary forum for international scientists and practitioners to discuss theoretical and practical aspects of Science 2.0. i-KNOW 2011 brings together international researchers and practitioners from the fields of knowledge management and knowledge technologies. The conference will cover relevant aspects from the fields of Knowledge Management, Knowledge Discovery, Knowledge Services, Social Media, Enterprise 2.0 and the Social Web. i-KNOW 2011 will be held concurrently with I-SEMANTICS 2011, the International Conference on Semantic Systems. Please note that there is a related call for participation in the dataTEL Challenge. Powered by STELLAR & TEAM (Mendeley) presenting the respective approaches. Topics Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * Definition of data schemes and interoperability formats * Semantic Web standards for Science 2.0 * Social mining and metadata extraction in academic resources * Metadata quality and quality assessment * Design and architecture of data sharing facilities * Systems design accounting for standardized data sets * Applications for recommendation in science * Specific challenges for recommendation in science * Information retrieval in academic papers * Recommendation algorithms and quality indicators * Changes in scientific practices due to Web 2.0 * Methodological issues and interdisciplinarity in Science 2.0 * Opportunities and threats for researchers and research organizations * Applications in and for Science 2.0 * Awareness-support for Science 2.0 activities Important Dates 15 May 2011 (extended): Submission of full papers (8 pages) 14 June 2011 (extended): Notification of acceptance 30 June 2011: Camera ready version (8 pages) 7 Sept.-9 Sept. 2011: i-KNOW 2011 Conference Submission Procedure Paper Submission Details: http://i-know.at/i-science/paper-submission In case of problems or questions concerning the submission of papers, please contact the track chairs at RDSRP(a)know-center.at. Notification of Acceptance and Publishing Authors of accepted papers will be notified by 14 June 2011. Accepted papers will be published within the i-KNOW 2011 conference proceedings. The conference proceedings of i-KNOW 2011 will be published by ACM ICPS and available in the ACM Digital Library. At least one author of an accepted paper must register for i-KNOW 2011 before the deadline for camera ready versions (30 June 2011) in order to get the paper published in the conference proceedings. I'm looking for information on SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence project) history and how data have been managed through the years, by what CMS, by a library? An archive? How this database has grown and where the data are going to be stored and used now that SETI should turn off? i know anyone can join in and process on his own computer signals from space, but i miss the rest of the story, the infrastructural one. Can someone help me?
