CfP: Online communities in social and caring professions (workshop at ECSCW)
by Dearden, Andrew M. 30 Apr '11

30 Apr '11

Call for Participation:Online communities in social and caring professions A workshop at ECSCW 2011 <http://www.ecscw2011.org/> Aarhus, Denmark, 24th September 2011 Workshop Theme Understanding and supporting the practices of collaborative work is one of the core goals of CSCW research. Online communities are an important setting in which shared work practices can emerge and become subject to joint improvement. The concept of communities of practice is frequently mentioned in this context. This workshop will take a closer look at the interplay of technical, social and learning aspects of communities of practice for social and caring professions. These domains have in common that the typical primary activity does not involve computer use to a large extent. Communities of practice still exist (and have their value), but the opportunities for computer mediated communication in these communities are not well investigated. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners experienced in communities for social and caring professions. We will discuss lessons learned with the goal of finding socio-technical design patterns and determining a research roadmap. How to Participate We invite you to share your experiences with designing, facilitating or studying online-communities in caring and social professions. Relevant topics are (but not limited to): -Self-organization and moderation of these communities -Communities of practice involving both professionals and volunteers -Communities of service providers and their relationship with service users -Sharing innovative work practices in on-line communities -Communities for learning, support and improvement of practices -Inter-organizational learning in communities -Communities fostering Open Innovation -Blended interactions in communities (combining co-located face to face interaction with distributed online interaction) -Engagement of "digital immigrants" (i.e. people who are less familiar with digital communications technologies) in online communities -Knowledge sharing in communities -The role of mobile devices as community support technologies -Communities that cross international borders Please submit a short position paper no longer than 6 pages. Submissions should be sent electronically to till.scheummer(a)fernuni-hagen.de <mailto:till.scheummer@fernuni-hagen.de>. Please adhere to the ECSCW style guidelines found at the ECSCW web site (e.g., http://www.ecscw09.org/authors/ECSCW_template.doc) The workshop organizing committee will review all papers. Workshop participants will be selected based on the appropriateness and quality of their position paper. On acceptance, you will be asked to 1) prepare a poster about your position paper, 2) read two other position papers to serve as a discussant, and 3) prepare one slide, answering the following questions: 1. Who is the community? 2. How big it the community (number of participants / broadness/ ...)? 3. Major challenges faced? 4. Number one recommendation for someone else? 5. Stuff not to do? All accepted position papers will be published on-line. We are currently negotiating publication opportunities in special issues of highly visible journals in which extended versions of the best contributions shall appear. Important Dates *1st of June 2011:* Deadline for submitting position papers electronically to Till Schümmer (till.schuemmer(a)fernuni-hagen.de) *15th June 2011:* Acceptance notification *28th June 2011:* Early registration deadline for ECSCW 2011 *24th or 25th September 2011: *Workshop in Aarhus, Denmark Please note that workshop participants are required to register for the full conference. As workers, as authors, and as citizens, we are increasingly summoned and disciplined by new digital technologies that define the workplace and produce ever more complex regimes of surveillance and control. At the same time, new possibilities for agency and new spaces for collectivity are borne from these multiplying digital innovations. This volume explores this social dialectic, with a specific focus on new forms of labour. Papers examine the histories and theories of digital capitalism, foundational assumptions in debates about digital labour, issues of intellectual property and copyright, material changes in the digital workplace, transnational perspectives on digital labour, the issue of free labour and new definitions of work, and struggles and contests on the scene of digital production. Contributors include Brian Holmes, Andrea Fumagalli and Cristina Morini, David Hesmondhalgh, Ursula Huws, Barry King, Jack Bratich, Enda Brophy and many others. This issue also contains vital contributions from union and guild activists hailing from the Canadian Media Guild (CMG), the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), the University of Western Ontario Faculty Association and the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT). > > The Digital Labour Group: Jonathan Burston, Edward Comor, James Compton, Nick Dyer-Witheford, Alison Hearn, Ajit Pyati, Sandra Smeltzer, Matt Stahl, Samuel E. Extended deadline for JCDL workshop STLR2011: Semantic Web Technologies for Libraries and Readers
by Jodi Schneider 29 Apr '11

29 Apr '11

Due to several requests, the STLR 2011 submission deadline has been extended to May 8th. We look forward to your demos, posters, and research papers. Since JCDL workshops are split over two half-days, we're pleased to announce *two* keynote speakers: Bernhard Haslhofer of the University of Vienna and Cathy Marshall of Microsoft Research. Please get in touch if you have questions! -Jodi CALL FOR PARTICIPATION The 1st Workshop on Semantic Web Technologies for Libraries and Readers STLR 2011 June 16 (PM) - 17 (AM) 2011 http://stlr2011.weebly.com/ Co-located with the ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL) 2011 Ottawa, Canada While Semantic Web technologies are successfully being applied to library catalogs and digital libraries, the semantic enhancement of books and other electronic media is ripe for further exploration. Connections between envisioned and emerging scholarly objects (which are doubtless social and semantic) and the digital libraries in which these items will be housed, encountered, and explored have yet to be made and implemented. Likewise, mobile reading brings new opportunities for personalized, context-aware interactions between reader and material, enriched by information such as location, time of day and access history. This full-day workshop, motivated by the idea that reading is mobile, interactive, social, and material, will be focused on semantically enhancing electronic media as well as on the mobile and social aspects of the Semantic Web for electronic media, libraries and their users. It aims to bring together practitioners and developers involved in semantically enhancing electronic media (including documents, books, research objects, multimedia materials and digital libraries) as well as academics researching more formal aspects of the interactions between such resources and their users. We also particularly invite entrepreneurs and developers interested in enhancing electronic media using Semantic Web technologies with a user-centered approach. We invite the submission of papers, demonstrations and posters which describe implementations or original research that are related (but are not limited) to the following areas of interest: - Strategies for semantic publishing (technical, social, and economic) - Approaches for consuming semantic representations of digital documents and electronic media - Open and shared semantic bookmarks and annotations for mobile and device-independent use - User-centered approaches for semantically annotating reading lists and/or library catalogues - Applications of Semantic Web technologies for building personal or context-aware media libraries - Approaches for interacting with context-aware electronic media (e.g. location-aware storytelling, context-sensitive mobile applications, use of geolocation, personalization, etc.) - Applications for media recommendations and filtering using Semantic Web technologies - Applications integrating natural language processing with approaches for semantic annotation of reading materials - Applications leveraging the interoperability of semantic annotations for aggregation and crowd-sourcing - Approaches for discipline-specific or task-specific information sharing and collaboration - Social semantic approaches for using, publishing, and filtering scholarly objects and personal electronic media IMPORTANT DATES *EXTENDED* Paper submission deadline: May 8th 2011 Acceptance notification: June 1st 2011 Camera-ready version: June 8th 2011 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Bernhard Haslhofer, University of Vienna Cathy Marshall, Microsoft Research PROGRAM COMMITTEE Each submission will be independently reviewed by 2-3 program committee members. (please excuse cross-posting) Hello All: The Classification Research Special Interest Group (SIG/CR) focuses on theoretical and practical issues surround the classification and representation of information for the purposes of organization, collection building, access, and preservation. We are inviting proposals for panels and contributions to panels for submission to the 74th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T). The theme of this year's conference is "Bridgng the Gulf: Communication and Information in Society, Technology and Work," and will be held October 9-13, 2011 in New Orleans. We are interested in panels that address representation and classification issues related to any kind of material: text or non- text, multimedia, games, scientific information, data, metadata, specific implementations of metadata schemas, visualizations, authority, trust, collection building...we also welcome philosophically inclined panels as well as those that are more practical in nature. Proposals should be formatted in accordance with the call for papers (which can be found at: http://www.asis.org/asist2011/am11cfp.html ) but sent to me (Megan Winget - megan(a)ischool.utexas.edu) as attachments. The deadline for panels to ASIST is May 31. 1) If you send me a fully formed panel proposal, I will submit to ASIST with support by SIG/CR. Please have these proposals to me by May 27. 2) If you send me a proposal for an individual panel contribution (but don't actually have a panel formed), I will attempt to facilitate collaboration between people with similar ideas to generate panel proposals. In order to do this and have enough time to then generate fully formed panel proposals, please have these individual paper proposals to me by May 16. To reiterate the deadlines: -If you have a panel idea, you've gotten your speakers lined up, and it's a done deal: May 27 -If you have an idea for a paper, but you don't have any other speakers in mind: May 16. We must have all panel proposals to ASIS&T by May 31. The ASIS&T call for panel proposals reads: Proposals for panels are invited on topics that include emerging cutting-edge research and design, analyses of hot or emerging trends, opinions on controversial issues, analyses of tools and techniques, and contrasting viewpoints from experts in complementary professional areas. Panels are not a substitute for a set of contributed papers, but must have a cohesive theme and promote lively interaction between panellists and audience members. Submit two to four pages that provide an overview of the issues to be discussed by the panel. Proposals should also list panellists who have agreed to participate and indicate the qualifications and contribution that each panellist will offer. Proposals for Pecha Kucha style presentations, are encouraged. If you have any questions whatsoever, please do not hesitate to contact me (megan(a)ischool.utexas.edu) or Joe Tennis (jtennis(a)uw.edu) and we will be happy to help. Facebook virus alert
by Ken Friedman 28 Apr '11

28 Apr '11

Friends, My Facebook account seems to have been hacked when I responded to a message from a colleague at a US university that turned out to be a virus. The trick seems to be that the message comes from friends as a fun event to see who has been stalking your page. When you try it, it raids your address book to contact all your friends, and when people use it, the process goes on. The message is actually a quiz phishing for mobile phone numbers. To get the information from the "game," you take a quiz, but the quiz is itself linked to a mobile phone payment system. The program is activated and spread when you paste it into the URL bar, and by the time you discover that this has happened, it raids your address book, then it contacts your friends. I spent thirty minutes trying to find out how to report phishing abuse, but the system gets into a recurrent loop without ever allowing me to report this. Since many people on this list use Facebook and some are my Facebook friends, I am sending this warning to the list. If the virus gets to you and you know how to report this to Facebook, I'd be grateful for you to either do so or perhaps tell me how. Since Facebook reporting doesn't permit you to make a simple report -- at least not from Australia -- I do not know to stop it. Most of what I get through Facebook doesn't interest me. The message and information are trivial and I don't use Facebook for any serious email or contact information. I'm thinking of unplugging. If Facebook cannot provide real security help with their billions of dollars, it's not worth remaining on the system. For now, my apologies if a message seemingly from me contacts you via my Facebook account. I never contact people through my Facebook account -- I use email. Online ethnography and Word Counts
by Joseph Reagle 28 Apr '11

28 Apr '11

I welcome any advice (off list, or on if thought to be of general interest). In communications, most journals have a word count limit of 7-8K. Even IJoC, an online journal not limited by paper constraints, is 9K. I generally support word count limits, but I have a draft wherein I excerpt and reference a lot of online discourse. I started at 11K words of prose, obviously far too long. After much slashing of clumsy prose, sacrificing of interesting digressions, and paraphrasing and cutting of cherished excerpts, I got it down to 8K. However, the bibliography is still about 2K (800 words of offline -- mostly secondary -- sources, and 900 words of online -- mostly primary -- sources). What are some options to being in such a pickle? * Are there reputable (even print) based journals that permit ~10K? * Perhaps in different disciplines (related to ethnography?)? * Or that distinguish between prose and bibliography (i.e., one can always print the bib really small)? * Break paper into pieces? (Always an option, but doesn't work for me here). * Host the primary sources online, but not in article? * Only provide URLs to those exclusively online sources. (The counts above already reflect this, and I did this in the print version of my book's bibliography.) * ... ? -- Regards, Joseph Reagle http://reagle.org/joseph/ (Perhaps using speech recognition, sorry for any speakos.)
