We are pleased to invite you to participate in the event "Current trends in audio-visual digital cultures," this Wednesday (March 23rd) in London at the Instituto Cervantes (102 Eaton Square) from 6.30pm to 8.30 pm. This event is part of a series of “Bonus Tracks” organised as part of the Remix Cinema Workshop (Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford), and will consist of two talks and an informal networking session which is aimed at creators, researchers, and professionals involved in initiatives related to emerging audiovisual practices. /////// Intro Networked technologies are facilitating the development of a wide range of new media practices and, ultimately, contributing to notable shifts in audiovisual cultures. For example, we see the proliferation of remix practices in DIY media in the context of every-day life. Likewise, in the domain of independent film-making, online community platforms and innovative production and distribution systems are offering unprecedented possibilities allowing for new forms of co-creation in constellations that were not possible prior to the widespread uptake of the Internet and, more recently, the development of social media applications. /////// Talks Dr. Antoni Roig Telo and Joan Carles Martorell provide an overview of emerging trends in contemporary audio-visual digital cultures in Spain. Each talk will focus on a number of initiatives and projects exemplifying innovative ways in which digital technologies are harnessed for the collaborative production of audiovisual content. While the examples are primarily from the Spanish arena, discussions are placed in a broader international context. Dr. Antoni Roig Telo has done extensive research on a broad scope of audio-visual creation, including emerging forms of participatory film-making, machinima and modding. He will offer a critical glance at phenomena such as co-creation, collaboration and crowdsourcing by drawing from cases of independent film productions. More specifically, he will discuss the Spanish indie projects The Cosmonaut, La Wikipeli and Panzer Chocolate. Dr. Roig Telo has PhD in Information and Knowledge Society, and is the Director of the postgraduate programme in Audiovisual Media Innovation at the Open University of Catalonia (Spain) Joan Carles Martorell will present EMBED.at, a platform where audiovisual researchers, professionals and festivals meet to talk, think and test old and new ideas on cinema, television, games, internet, transmedia, remix, copyleft and people. EMBED is promoting initiatives fostering the disclosure of cultural audiovisual source codes, a metaphor for exploring, showcasing and distributing audiovisual content by inviting film-makers, musicians and artists to share their sources of inspirations. EMBED is an initiative of Festivalito, Movil Film Fest, Yerblues.net and ZEMOS98 with the support of Instituto Cervantes and Junta de Andalucía (all based in Spain). /////// Networking session Following the talks we have scheduled time for an informal networking session aimed at artists, creators, media professionals, and academics with interest in any aspect of audio-visual digital culture. We encourage anyone interested in this session to bring flyers or other printed materials explaining their work or projects (please include contact details). [sorry for crossposting - also feel free to fwd as relevant] *CFP: Digital Diasporas and Transnational Social Movements: Capital, Labor, Mobility and Identity* Editor – Radhika Gajjala (see http://personal.bgsu.edu/~radhik ) “Digital diasporas” occur at the intersection of local/ global, national/ international, private/public, offline/online and embodied/disembodied. In digital diasporas, a multiplicity of representations, mass media broadcasts, textual and visual performances and interpersonal interactions occur. The term *“digital diaspora”* is most often used to talk about how diasporic populations the world over use the Internet to connect to each other. Scholars such as Anna Everett (2009) and Jeniffer Brinkerhoff (2009) have each used the phrase in relation to very specific situated histories of forced migrations (African American histories of slavery) and transnational travel respectively. The link to labor flows and hierarchies of colonialisms and digital globalization is clear in both. In most general usage of the phrase “digital diaspora,” however, it is used to describe migrant populations without attention to the specific conditions of subjectivity that produces diasporas. Further, it is interesting that international NGOs (specifically the United Nations) and Transnational corporations as well as National businesses have mobilized the notion of digital diaspora in “reverse brain-drain” efforts where very materially successful transnationals and migrants with moneys to invest actually get to return home. In the past I have edited a couple publications that center around South Asian Digital Diasporas (a Special Section of New Media and Society in 2006) and South Asian Technospace (a co-edited collection of essays). My intent with this next volume on digital diasporas is to include material that helps elaborate on the more current platforms where links between transnational capital and labor flows can be mapped in the context of the increasing NGOization and ITization of the globe. Thus questions include (but are not limited to) – why “digital diaspora” and why now? What forms a “digital diaspora” within gaming environments and social networks? How are non-profits and transnational corporations (similarly or differently) mobilizing this idea of digital diaspora in relation to labor and capital flows? How does a "digital diaspora" form - how does it "look" - how does it function and so on. >From prospective contributors, I will need an extended abstract of 800 to 1000 words that fleshes out the theoretical and methodological approaches in relation to a specific site that will be examined. VV 7 will be held in Zagreb, Croatia, hosted by the Contemporary Arts Museum in April-May 2012. There will be a VV Summer School on the Croatian island Vis in August 2010. This is part of an effort to establish an international VV online video masters degree. development of the information society concept

Petr, the history of the information society concept begins many decades earlier than you have placed it. The concept first appeared in Japan in the early 1960s when the notion of an information society -- joho shakai -- was introduced by a scholar. (The first book using the phrase in its title was in 1968, when Yoneji Masuda published INTRODUCTION TO AN INFORMATION SOCIETY.) The concept was then widely publicized in the Japanese mass media, and taken up vigorously by the Japanese government with an aggressive funding program to support the development of new information technologies, the uses of those technologies, and study the effects of those uses. It was AFTER the concept appeared in Japan that Daniel Bell's work introduced the concept to the English language world (though I believe he independently reached the notion). Subsequently, the concept was taken up in a wide variety of ways by scholars across disciplines and by governments for a variety of purposes, but to be accurate the story begins in the early 1960s. (I've a piece from the mid-1990s that documents some of this story and has citations that will lead you onward, if that's helpful -- Harmonization of systems, in the JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATION.) Hello Petr, Thank you for this interesting question. Just some thoughts... My view is that in the EU policy strategies eEurope 2002, eEurope 2005 and iSociety 2010, the EU a) on the one hand stressed the importance of liberalized and commodified ICTs/digital economy and b) formulated a normative wish list of an inclusive, participatory European information society. It wanted to become "the world's most competitive" information sociey/economy until 2010 and failed in doing so. All three plans were basically neoliberal policy strategies, aiming at a largely commodified European information society. The normative vision of having an inclusive and participatory information society is contradicted by the focus on markets, competition, capital accumulation and commodification, but the European Union never realized this. Ggoal: "The overall aim of the Digital Agenda is to deliver sustainable economic and social benefits from a digital single market based on fast and ultra fast internet and interoperable applications.". "sustainable information economy" = commodified, deregulated, privatized = contradicts the goal of "social benefits" for all With such policy visions, we will also in 2020 have a class-strucuted information society, not a participatory one. The new crisis of capitalism does not seem to have created many cracks, fissures and holes into the neoliberal policy vision. So there is no difference if the EU talks about "information society" or "digital society" - the ideology behind it (neoliberalism) has not changed. The question if there are small policy differentiations in the policy documents over the past 10 years is secondary, the primary issue is the larger concept of society framing it. Also one should once more question if we indeed live in an "information society" or "digital society" or any other prefixed society that implies the dominance of knowledge or ICTs. The prefixes "information", "digital", etc imply that IT and knowledge are the major characteristic of contemporary societies, which they are not. IT and knowledge constitute one of many aspects, we at the same time live in information capitalism, finance capitalism (as the finance crisis shows), hyperindustrialist capitalism (as the reliance on oil and nuclear energy and the Fukushima crisis show), a global war society/imperialistic capitalism (as the various wars fought by the West in the past 10 years show), etc. The claim that "information", "digitization" etc is dominant is simply wrong - first and foremost we live in a capitalist society, which is multidimensionally contradictory and many-faced.
