RA position in Cambridge, MA
by danah boyd 20 Apr '11

20 Apr '11

I know most folks on this list are PhD students and faculty, but if you know of younger scholars or phenomenal about-to-graduate undergrads who are looking for a paid research assistant position for the upcoming year, I'm looking to hire a RA at MSR in Cambridge, MA. (Please understand that this is an on site position; it's not possible for this to be a remote position.) Feel free to forward this to anyone who you think might fit. danah ..... Microsoft Research (MSR) is looking for a Research Assistant for its Social Media Collective in the New England lab, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Social Media Collective consists of danah boyd, Mike Ananny, and Alice Marwick, as well as faculty visitors and PhD interns. MSR is an academic institution and the Social Media Collective consists of scholars doing work in the areas of sociology, anthropology, media studies, and communications. An appropriate candidate will be both passionate and knowledgeable about social media, have strong writing and organization skills, and have experience working on research projects. Job responsibilities will include producing literature reviews, coding ethnographic data, editing manuscripts, and organizing events. The RA will also get to collaborate on ongoing research and, while a publication is not a guarantee, the RA will be encouraged to co-author scholarly articles while at MSR. The RAship will require 20-25 hours per week on site in Cambridge, MA. It is a 1-year only contractor position, paid hourly with flexible daytime hours. The ideal start date would be in May or June, but is flexible. This position does not include benefits or relocation. The candidate must already have a visa to work in the United States. This position is ideal for young scholars who are applying to PhD programs in sociology, anthropology, communications, media studies, information studies, and related fields and want to get involved with research. Current New England-based MA/PhD students are welcome to apply provided that they can commit to 25 hours of on-site work per week. To apply, please send an email to dmb(a)microsoft.com with the subject "RA Application" and include the following: - 1-page personal statement, including a description of research experience, interests, and professional goals - CV or resume - Writing sample (preferably a literature review or a scholarly-styled article) - Links to online presence (e.g., blog, homepage, Twitter, journalistic endeavors, etc.) - The names and emails of two recommenders (faculty recommendations are preferred) We will begin reviewing applications on May 1 and continue doing so until we find an appropriate candidate.

Using archives of the web for research
by Eric Meyer 20 Apr '11

20 Apr '11

Dear AoIR, OII is currently doing some work for the IIPC (International Internet Preservation Consortium: http://www.netpreserve.org) and part of the work involves identifying current and cutting edge research techniques and tools that are available for research on the live web, but that are currently either difficult or impossible to use with web archives such as the Internet Archive (http://www.archive.org/) or other IIPC member organisations. The short version of what we are hoping to get from this group: - do you know of any innovative uses of web archives for research? - what techniques for researching the live web should be adapted for use with web archives? - can you envisage any innovative uses of web archives (or other archived Internet data) for research that you would ideally like to be able to do? The longer version: What we are hoping is that members of AoIR will respond to us (off list) with your ideas about ways you research the live web that could potentially be enhanced using either snapshots from the web at different time points or longitudinal data about the web over time, but which would need additional support, training, tools, or infrastructure to be able to accomplish. Your responses will be used to influence the IIPC community to add web archive support for the kinds of cutting edge research that AoIR members are doing. Also, if you have any types of research or research questions you have been hoping to be able to do with archived internet data but have not been able to do for whatever reason, and you are willing to share the ideas and the barriers to researching them with us for possible inclusion in our discussion paper, that would be appreciated as well. Responses before 1 May will be most helpful. We will post the draft report back to the list in May, and the final report in the summer. Those interested in web archives may also find two reports we wrote last autumn to be of interest: Dougherty, M., Meyer, E.T., Madsen, C., van den Heuvel, C., Thomas, A., Wyatt, S. (2010). by Niels Brügger 20 Apr '11

20 Apr '11

PhD scholarship in the field of The history of cross-media with focus on the world wide web and its relation to one or more other media types, primarily radio or tv. The Graduate School of Humanities, Aarhus Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University, in collaboration with The State and University Library, invites applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship in The history of cross-media with focus on the world wide web and its relation to one or more other media types, primarily radio or tv starting on 1 September 2011. Candidates who are awarded the scholarship must commence their PhD programme on 1 September 2011. The PhD scholarship will be financed by the Aarhus Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University, and The State and University Library. The PhD scholarship is advertised within the field of the historical interplay of media. Scholarship about the interplay of media (cross-mediality) is an emerging field within media studies, but especially the number of historical cross-media studies is very limited. With this PhD-project we wish to further historical studies of the interplay of media. Despite the fact that the history of cross-mediality is by and large unchartered, the phenomenon itself has a long history, and with the advent of new media types within the last 10-15 years (eg. internet and mobile media) the media interplay has grown. The project must be historical and it should focus on one or more of the following points: theoretical and methodological issues, institutions, production, content and forms of expression, reception, technology, and social use. The project should benefit from the existing collections of media content at The State and University Library, primarily the national internet archive Netarkivet as well as the collections of radio and television. The State and University Library wants to further research projects which shed light on how research accross the librarie's media collections can be undertaken. The PhD scholar must complete the studies in accordance with the valid regulations for the PhD degree programme, currently the Ministerial Order of 14 January 2008 on the PhD Programme at the Universities:http://www.phd.humaniora.au.dk/en/rulesandforms/degreeprog/phd_order.pdf Description of the graduate school’s PhD programme: http://www.humaniora.au.dk/en/studies/phd/gradschool/graduate_school_uk The PhD scholar will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Graduate School of Humanities, Aarhus Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University, with the aim of completing a PhD degree at the Institute of Information and Media Studies, Aarhus University. The PhD scholar will be affiliated with the PhD programme ICT, Communication, Media Studies and Journalism. Call for papers - Academic Exchange Quarterly
by Larry Davies 19 Apr '11

19 Apr '11

Academic Exchange Quarterly<http://www.rapidintellect.com/AEQweb/index.htm> Fall 2011, Volume 15, Issue 3 Expanded issue up to 400+ pages. Articles on various topics plus the following special sections. Addressing the Challenges of the 21st Century Paradigm for Virtual Colleges Feature Editors: Larry Davies, Ed.D. - Senior Instructional Designer Virtual College, Miami Dade College, Miami, Florida, USA <http://virtual.mdc.edu/portal/index.aspx> Email: ldavies(a)mdc.edu & Marti Anderson, Ph.D. - Education and Teacher Training Consultant Bangkok, Thailand Email: marti.r.anderson(a)gmail.com *Focus:* The exponential growth of online curricula is culminating in new organizational culture models, new instructional design concepts and a new set of policies for online educational institutions. The new Virtual College is managed by Virtual administrators and instruction is delivered by Virtual faculty. Virtual students are mainly non-traditional students in a demographic that is increasingly female and in an older age group. Virtual college faculty, guiding courses delivered entirely online, face an interesting set of unprecedented challenges: they may never meet their students, they may teach for multiple virtual colleges, and they may never have face-to-face interactions with the inhabitants of the institutions at which they teach. These changes have important implications for the nature, quality and management of online curricular and courses development, and online instruction. There is an increasing awareness that, indeed, online learning carries with it far-reaching implications on all aspects of higher education. Quantitative and qualitative research and scholarly reflection which examines these phenomena is invited. Teaching online, part-time online adjuncts, instructional quality, the management of distance education programs, organizational structures in distance education organizations, faculty workload issues, policy issues, and the economic and social impact of these phenomena are all invited topics. Other related topics are also accepted. Articles containing research on academic and administrative policies that are re-aligned with 21st Century realities in Virtual Education are especially encouraged and welcome. * Who May Submit:* Submissions are welcome from distance education administrators, full time and part time faculty teaching online, and others involved in the process of teaching or managing online courses. Please identify your submission with keyword: VIRTUAL-2 *Deadline for submissions:* Any time until the end of May 2011. See details for other deadline options like early, regular, and short.<http://www.rapidintellect.com/AEQweb/rufen1.htm#date> Early submission offers an opportunity to be considered for Editors' Choice<http://www.rapidintellect.com/AEQweb/edchoice.htm> *Submission Procedure:* http://rapidintellect.com/AEQweb/rufen1.htm

New report: Citizens in @ction: Social media and civic engagement in Indonesia
by Yanuar Nugroho 19 Apr '11

19 Apr '11

Dear AoIR members For you who are interested, I would like to let you know that a new report on social media and civil engagement in Indonesia has just been launched. All best, yanuar ------------ CITIZENS IN @CTION Indonesia is booming on social media. It has the second largest population on Facebook and also scores second on the amount of tweeps in Asia. Recently Hivos and University of Manchester's Institute of Innovation Research (MIOIR) carried out a research into the way civil society organisations and groups engage in civic activism by means of the use of Internet and social media in Indonesia. This research shows how various civic engagements impact the shaping of the civil society in the country, and more importantly, social change. It contributes to the overall debate on the use of social media and civil society organizations in Indonesia in particular and global at large. The report “Citizens in @ction” was launched in Manchester on the 4th of April 2011. Download it from MIOIR here http://research.mbs.ac.uk/innovation/Ourresearch/Ourpublications/Reports.as… Direct link to PDF http://research.mbs.ac.uk/innovation/Portals/0/docs/Citizens%20in%20action%… -- _________________ Yanuar Nugroho Secretary General Uni Sosial Demokrat Jakarta - Indonesia yanuar-n(a)unisosdem.org www.unisosdem.org
