apologies
by Charles Ess 08 Apr '11

08 Apr '11

Dear AoIR-ists, As has happened to many of us, earlier today my co-editor May Thorseth inadvertently sent to the list what was clearly meant to be a personal note. The good news is that we have cleared matters up - part of the problem was that the Amazon pages she found indeed neglected to include her as co-editor; for that, the one I was thinking of clearly identified her as co-editor: <http://www.amazon.com/Trust-Virtual-Worlds-Contemporary-Perspectives/dp/143 3109220/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1302254576&sr=1-2> In all events, on behalf of both of us, please accept our regrets for the inadvertent email. cheers and all the best, - charles

persons with disabilities and digital politics research
by FILIPPO TREVISAN 08 Apr '11

08 Apr '11

Dear AoIR-ers, just wondering if anyone may be able to help with the identification of case studies for my research. in my PhD, I am investigating ways in which disability organizations, disabled activists, and persons with disabilities more generally use the internet to participate in politics, with a view to determine whether this can in any way lead to empowerment. this project will include a section comparing British and American groups/campaigners. I will soon be traveling to the US to carry out fieldwork and I have already identified a series of "formal" disability organizations that I will be looking at. however, I would also appreciate if any of you were able to suggest other American disabled groups/individuals that are using the internet for lobbying/campaigning/organizing that I may not yet be aware of and you think should not be overlooked. I would be particularly interested in hearing about independent campaigners/networks that may not be immediately visible through keyword searches on Google. so far, I have privileged federal/national organizations but would also be happy to look at significant state-specific ones. any suggestions welcome - please do get in touch directly at f.trevisan.1(a)research.gla.ac.uk or through the list. wishing you all a great weekend, Filippo ------------- Filippo Trevisan Doctoral Candidate: Digital Politics & Disability School of Social and Political Sciences University of Glasgow 25 Bute Gardens Glasgow - UK G12 8RS tel: +44 (0)141 330 4377 email: f.trevisan.1(a)research.gla.ac.uk web: http://www.gla.ac.uk/departments/urbanstudies/studentpages/filippotrevisan/

CFP: The Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy (DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 5/31)
by matt.lists＠gmail.com 08 Apr '11

08 Apr '11

Dear Colleagues, Please see the CFP below and forward to anyone you know who might be interested. Many thanks. Matt --------------------------------------------------------- Matthew K. Gold, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, New York City College of Technology (English) and CUNY Graduate Center (Interactive Technology and Pedagogy) Project Director, CUNY Academic Commons <http://commons.gc.cuny.edu/> 300 Jay Street, Brooklyn, New York 11201 http://mkgold.net mattgold(a)gmail.com ------ Subject: CFP: The Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy (DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 5/31) Please forward this to your department listserv and to any colleagues to which it would be of potential interest. Thank you! *** The Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy, a new, peer reviewed publication, seeks scholarly work that explores the intersection of technology with teaching, learning, and research. We are interested in contributions that take advantage of the affordances of digital platforms in creative ways. Submissions that focus on pedagogy should balance theoretical frameworks with practical considerations of how new technologies might be employed in the classroom. Research-based articles should include discussions of approach, method, and analysis. In addition to scholarly articles, we will consider: * Manifestos and jeremiads: ideological statements that strongly articulate new visions of academic life and work. * Interviews, dialogues or conversations: interviews with teachers or researchers using new tools or techniques in innovative ways; dialogues between scholars on new directions in pedagogy and research; or roundtable discussions about pedagogy, research, or academic development. * Reviews of relevant materials in the field: descriptions and critiques of recent offerings in the field, such as new books, hardware, software, CMSes, etc. * Assignments or exercises, classroom-based or otherwise, accompanied by critical reflection. * Creative works: videos, animations, poems, games, photographs, presentations, etc. On average, full-length articles range between 3,500 and 8,000 words, but more important than length is the work’s ability to engage an audience in critically reflecting on the uses of technology in academic contexts. All submissions must be previously unpublished. We regret that we cannot consider simultaneously submitted work. For our complete guidelines, please go to http://ojs.gc.cuny.edu/index.php/itcp/about/submissions.

yet another shameless book announcement ...
by Charles Ess 08 Apr '11

08 Apr '11

Dear AoIR-ists, On behalf of my co-editor and our contributing authors, I'm very pleased to announce the recent publication of _Trust and Virtual Worlds: Contemporary Perspectives_ co-edited by Charles Ess and May Thorseth, as part of the Digital Formations series, edited by Steve Jones - Peter Lang. - and reasonably priced @ $29.95 ... >From the back cover: Trust is essential to human society and the good life. At the same time, citizens of developed countries spend more and more time in virtual environments. This collection asks: How far do virtual environments, especially those affiliated with Web 2.0, challenge and foster trust? Opening chapters establish historical, linguistic, and philosophical foundations for key concepts of trust, embodiment, virtuality, and virtual worlds. Four philosophers then analyze how trusthistorically interwoven with embodied co-presencemay be enhanced through online environments. Final chapters tackle the specific challenges of virtual child pornography and democratic deliberation online. This is the first collection devoted exclusively to the philosophical dimensions of trust and virtual worlds. In doing so it helps to bring the reader up to date on the relevant concepts and issues, and on ways in which widely ranging insights and approaches may nonetheless cohere into a reasonably comprehensive account of trust. Those interested in more details can easily track down the table of contents and sample pages at amazon.com. enjoy! - charles ess Institut for Informations- og Medievidenskab Helsingforsgade 14 8200 Århus N. by Elisenda Ardévol 07 Apr '11

Digital Culture: Innovative practices and critical theories. ECREA Digital Culture& Communication 3rd workshop Barcelona, Spain, November 24-25 co-organised by the ECREA Digital Culture& Communication (DCC) section, Humanities Department and Information and Communication Sciences Department Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, with support from the Centre for Material Digital Culture (DMDC), University of Sussex, UK CALL FOR PAPERS: This workshop seeks to explore innovative perspectives on digital culture and the study of digital culture. Our concern is to focus on developing forms of theorizing, critiquing, understanding and researching digital culture, forms and practice. Our intention is to contribute to emerging work responding (1) to ‘new’ new media technologies of all kinds, and (2) to respond to developments in media research on technology and innovation. We invite contributions of all kinds, but suggest proposals for papers may fall into three main areas. Each relates to theories, practices and methodologies of innovation. They are: 1) Digital Media and the senses. This may include works on or related to enhanced reality, locative media and virtual worlds. 2) Creative practices and participation in new media. Here we are particularly concerned with discussing concepts of participation, co-creativity, co-design or co-innovation in creative processes involving audiences and independent creators in a wide spectrum of activities including art, photography, video, videogames. 3) Digital research and education in digital culture. This would seek to explore innovative theoretical and methodological approaches in digital media studies as well as innovative teaching tools. The workshop develops concepts and ideas developed at the previous Digital stream workshop ‘Revisiting Digital Theories’ – our goal in exploring innovative forms of media culture is to do so within frameworks that are capable of thinking through technological and critical innovation whilst also recognizing the connection of both with earlier forms. World Bank report on the virtual economy of gold farming and microwork
by Vili Lehdonvirta 07 Apr '11

Hi All, A report I coauthored for the World Bank's InfoDev programme about the "virtual economy" has just been published. It contains some new research on gold farming in MMOs, but also tries to expand the virtual economy concept to digital microwork, the real-money trade of Facebook likes and Twitter followers, and similar phenomena. Comments/views would be more than welcome!
