Canadian Consumers Unwilling to Pay for News Online
by Alfred Hermida 30 Mar '11

30 Mar '11

Canadian Consumers Unwilling to Pay for News Online The Canadian Media Research Consortium (CMRC) releases the first in a series of reports that looks into the changing news consumption habits of Canadians. News consumers, long used to getting their news free, are balking at the idea of having to pay for content online. For the last few years, operators have been scrambling to find a new model that will generate sufficient revenue to keep them afloat. Many, including the New York Times, have seized on paywalls as the panacea for what ails the news business but consumers are not prepared to go along, according to a collaborative survey conducted recently by the Canadian Media Research Consortium (CMRC) and Vision Critical. http://mediaresearch.ca/en/projects/PayingForTheNews.htm

feedback on cyberleisure idea for forthcoming book
by Payal Arora 30 Mar '11

30 Mar '11

Hi, I would greatly appreciate any feedback on my idea of viewing social network sites through the metaphor of "virtual parks" to construct a framework on cyberleisure. My upcoming book with Routledge (2012) stems from this paper that I published with The Information Society Journal (if you do not have access to this journal, I d be happy to provide a pdf to you). Also, if any of you guys have further ideas and suggestions on drawing parallels between "park" spaces and its virtual equivalent, I d love to hear them. Of course I'll give formal credit to those who suggest these ideas. thanks so much! appreciate your time -Cheers Payal http://www.indiana.edu/~tisj/27/2/ab-arora.html Online Social Sites as Virtual Parks: An Investigation into Leisure Online and Offline The Information Society: An International Journal Volume 27, Issue 2, 2011 Abstract Currently, there is much excitement about Web 2.0 as a novel platform for experiencing, producing, and consuming leisure, particularly through social network sites. On the other hand, there are skeptics who sound the alarm on these spaces, viewing them as diluting of human relations. The perspective that guides this paper is invested in neither a utopian or dystopian posture but sees historical continuity, pointing out that performing leisure is a basic human impulse that has also found expression over the centuries. With regard to the online sites used for leisure, it makes the case that the history of the development of the public park, product of a complex interplay of interests and agendas of different stakeholders, provides a particularly rich resource for gaining insights into the evolution of social networking sites. To illustrate this heuristic potential, it draws on experiences ranging from democratization of Beijing’s parks in early twentieth century to the movement of flâneurs across Parisian public spaces to comment on the architecture of and activities on social network sites. ========================== Dr. Payal Arora www.payalarora.com Assistant Professor in International Media & Communication Department of Communication, Erasmus University Rotterdam The Netherlands ==========================

Re: [Air-L] Facebook and people in their thirties
by Jessica Vitak 29 Mar '11

Hi Feona, Myself and some fellow researchers at Michigan State ( https://www.msu.edu/~nellison/TOIL) have conducted two studies of adult Facebook users over the last year and a half. Last year we did a qualitative (interview) study of adult users ages 25-55 and had three papers come out of it, one which is currently being reworked for a journal and two which have been published in proceedings. We also just wrapped up a second study of university staff users (so mainly adults in the same age range) that included a survey and lab session. We've recently submitted our first paper to a conference and are working on others. As we've done research with adults, we've done a fair amount of searching for other researchers using adult populations and not found much. Pew Internet makes their datasets publicly available so you could always do a reanalysis of one of their many datasets (or simply read their reports). Also, Moira Burke has done some solid research using surveys and server-level data of adult Facebook users (not limited to 30-somethings). Cites for our papers: - Wohn, D. Interested in online interview research? Join a focus group?
by Janet Salmons 29 Mar '11

29 Mar '11

Hello everyone, I am new to this list ;-) Last year I wrote a book called Online Interviews in Real Time, available from Sage (See: http://tinyurl.com/einterview) This book focuses on synchronous interviews conducted with or in text, videoconferencing, virtual worlds or meeting spaces. I've edited a companion that is coming out next fall: Cases in Online Interview Research. (See: http://tinyurl.com/e-interview2) The new book contains 10 multi-disciplinary cases of research with data collected from mostly synchronous interviews. Each case is followed by two commentaries-- one by another book contributor and one from me, using an "E-Interview Research Framework" as the basis for my analysis. The "E-Interview Research Framework" is a collection of models and key questions; I created this framework to further develop and organize materials introduced in Online Interviews in Real Time. My purpose is to offer some guiding principles for people who are designing research with online interviews or who are reviewing proposals for or completed studies that include online interviews. In mid-April I want to convene 2-3 online focus groups with people who either a) teach research methods (qualitative), b) serve on doctoral committees or c) are on IRB or other review boards. I want to see what others think about this "Framework" and the key questions I've identified so far and learn about additional questions or concerns they would have about a research proposal or study that uses online interviews for data collection. I am looking for a diverse group of maybe 20 people altogether. Once I see who is participating I will schedule based on time zones. The focus groups will be held in Adobe Connect. If you are interested please contact me off-list: jsalmons-at-vision2lead.com. Thanks! deadline approaching: moral economies of creative labour conference
by Helen Kennedy 29 Mar '11

29 Mar '11

The final deadline for receipt of papers for Moral Economies of Creative Labour, a two day conference on Thursday 7th & Friday 8th July 2011 at the University of Leeds, UK, is approaching. Please email abstracts (150 words max for a 20 minute paper) to ics-conferences(a)leeds.ac.uk by the close of play on Thursday 31st March 2011. More information is available at: http://www.moraleconomies.leeds.ac.uk/ --- In analyses of the cultural, media and creative industries, considerable attention has been paid to the negative, unethical or amoral aspects of the labour process – such as the exploitation of ‘precarious’ workers, the self-exploitation that results from internalizing mechanisms of control, or the damaging aspects of inequality and individuation at work. While it remains vital to theorise these aspects, a number of scholars have sought to offer contrasting accounts that point to the diverse array of moral and ethical practices evident in cultural/creative labour, with workers appearing to routinely invest their work with social and non-instrumental values, ethics and politics – however ‘commercialised’, ‘networked’ and ‘immaterial’ their workplaces may appear to be. Such scholars draw their energies from accounts of the cultural or moral aspects of economic life (Sayer), the limits of market thinking in the cultural sphere (O’Neill, Keat), autonomist and post-Marxist approaches (Lazzarato, Hardt and Negri) and varied attempts to move beyond the ethical impasse of post-structuralist critique. Yet whether it is possible to identify any substantively ‘moral’, ‘ethical’ or critical features of this sector remains contentious. This conference therefore asks: what are the moral or ethical dimensions of creative work? What are the political outcomes of efforts to infuse creative labour with ethical intent or content? How might an ethical politics of creative labour be theorized and organized? Or, given the propensity of capital to absorb or exploit normative critique, should the prospect of ‘ethical’ cultural work be regarded as illusory and damaging? Confirmed keynote speakers include: Russell Keat, Andrew Sayer & Susan Christopherson. Other speakers include: David Hesmondhalgh, Helen Kennedy, Mark Banks, Jason Toynbee, Vicki Mayer, David Lee. Papers are invited on the following (or similar) topics: creativity, cultural work and ethics; media work and ethics; ethics and aesthetics; creative/cultural policy, politics and organizing; ethics and exploitation; ‘good’ and ‘bad’ work; ethics of caring; emotions and affective creative labour; practices and virtues; the commodification of ethics; the limits of workplace ethics. Conference fee: £75 (waged) £30 (Postgraduates/unwaged), includes some meals and refreshments.
