altmetrics11: deadline extended

altmetrics11: Tracking scholarly impact on the social Web Koblenz (Germany), 14-15 June 2011 An ACM Web Science Conference 2011 Workshop [1] Keynote speaker: Mike Thelwall, University of Wolverhampton: "Evaluating online evidence of research impact" Call for papers: The increasing quantity and velocity of scientific output is presenting scholars with a deluge of data. There is growing concern that scholarly output may be swamping traditional mechanisms for both pre-publication filtering (e.g peer review) and post-publication impact filtering (e.g. the Journal Impact Factor). Increasing scholarly use of Web2.0 tools like CiteULike, Mendeley, Twitter, and blog-style article commenting presents an opportunity to create new filters. Metrics based on a diverse set of social sources could yield broader, richer, and more timely assessments of current and potential scholarly impact. Realizing this, many authors have begun to call for investigation of these “altmetrics” [2]. Despite the growing speculation and early exploratory investigation into the value of altmetrics, however, there remains little concrete research into the properties of these metrics: their validity, their potential value and flaws, and their relationship to established measures. Nor has there been any large umbrella to bring these multiple perspectives together. The altmetrics 11 workshop aims to encourage both these. Submissions are invited from a variety of areas: * New metrics based on social media * Tracking science communication on the Web * Relation between traditional metrics and altmetrics * Peer-review and altmetrics * Tools for gathering, analyzing, disseminating altmetrics Important Dates: 2-page abstracts due * April 8 *, 2011 Acceptance and abstract publication April 14, 2011 Open pre-workshop discussion April 14, 2011 – June 14, 2011 Workshop at WebSci 11 June 14 – June 15, 2011 Discussion closed June 30, 2011 Invitations for post-workshop proceedings TBA Submissions: Prospective authors should email 2-page extended abstracts (max. 1000 words, not including references) to altmetrics11(a)altmetrics.org. If necessary, the workshop organizers will select the most relevant, original, and significant abstracts for presentation. Experimental results will be given preference, followed by technical reports on working altmetrics tools and position papers. All selected submissions will be published online for open peer review and discussion. Authors are encouraged to participate in the discussions of their work. Based on the presentations and online discussion, selected authors may be asked to submit full papers for peer-reviewed proceedings. Location: The workshop is hosted by the ACM Web Science Conference 2011 (Koblenz, Germany). This interdisciplinary conference focuses on advances in studying the full range of social-technical relationships on the Web. Please visit the Web Science site for more information. Website: http://altmetrics.org/workshop2011/ Organizers: * Paul Groth – VU University Amsterdam, NL * Jason Priem – University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA * Dario Taraborelli – Wikimedia Foundation, USA The organizers have an interdisciplinary background covering Sociology, Information and Library Science and Computer Science. request for assistance with article citations
by Nikki Usher 23 Mar '11

Hi: I'm looking to discuss the relationship between social media organizations as hegemonic institutions and as arbiters of "free speech" - or something to that effect. Essentially, I'd like to place some criticism on the place of big social media orgs and their place in the discourse about freedom of information. I'm fine on privacy articles. For those of you interested in the social media course I've been shaping, it's almost done, with many thanks to your help. Thanks, Nikki Usher -- Nikki Usher PhD Candidate Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism University of Southern California mobile: 213-220-7824 home: 213-493-4204 www.nikkiusher.com

Call for papers - Comparing Media Systems in the Iberian Peninsula
by Patrícia Dias da Silva 23 Mar '11

23 Mar '11

Special issue of the International Journal of Iberian Studies (Intellect). In the last years, comparative studies have quickly developed in the field of communication studies. Specifically, the publication of Hallin and Manciniís Comparing Media Systems has been a turning point of cross-national research into the structure, politics and performing of media systems. In this work, Spain and Portugal appear, alongside other countries, under the umbrella of the Polarized Pluralist or Mediterranean model. However, not all the literature agrees on these similarities between Spain and Portugal. Equally, areas like those of journalism, policies, texts and audiences, just to name a few, remain largely unexplored from this comparative perspective. The aim of this special issue is to stimulate the debate on cross-national media research between Spain and Portugal. The Iberian perspective on media studies is hardly developed. However, in the context of increasing comparative research, it seems a logical step forward. Among others, relevant questions include: - Is there space for an Iberian dimension in Portuguese and Spanish media systems? - What are the difficulties faced by researchers when comparing the Spanish and Portuguese media systems? - Whatís the research agenda for an Iberian perspective on media systems and its relation to political, economic or cultural systems? - What is the theoretical and empirical justification for Iberian research? - How do researchers interpret similarities and differences found when studying both countries and media production, distribution and consumption? - Do media texts reflect the Iberian perspective? How do they reflect it? - How the different languages spoken in the Iberian Peninsula affect this Iberian dimension? - Whatís the role of nations and regions within these systems and among them? - Whatís the relationship and position of the Iberian media and communication space with other systems in the context of globalization? To that end, possible topics include (but are not limited to): journalism practices and cultures, structure of national broadcasting systems, transborder texts, experiences and practices, audience analysis, international communication, political communication, communication and cultural policies, and media theory and sociology. Cross-national studies will be privileged. Only articles written in English will be sent out for review. Articles should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words including notes and references. The submission guidelines can be downloaded from http://www.intellectbooks.co.uk/MediaManager/File/IJIS%20Notes%20for%20Cont…. The deadline for submissions is 20 September 2011. This special issue will be published in 2012. Re: [Air-L] Twitter no longer allowing use for scholarship - Update
by Amanda Lenhart 23 Mar '11

23 Mar '11

Hi Andrea & AoIR List Sure, in the name of transparency, here's the text of the email I sent to the person I know at Twitter, with all the personal pleasantries edited out. I also included an attachment with more detailed needs from the people who emailed me, but as those were off-list messages, I don't feel like I have permission to repost them here. However, if anyone who emailed me wants to repost their message to the list to get a broader discussion going, that's fine with me. And of course, let me know if I missed anything or misrepresented anyone's needs. * * * "I'm going to try to summarize the main feedback. Basically, the type and breadth of research even among the 12 or so projects that I heard about from my outreach are so varied that at least one researcher out there is using every element of a tweet, profiles, and the interface to measure or look at something. For example there's a guy looking at regional variations in linguistic forms on twitter - so he's using geolocation, tagging and the words in individual tweets for analysis. There is a big project looking at crisis response by looking at twitter hashtags, and other projects where people are using twitter data to do network mapping - so they need @reply data, and individual user ids -- names or something else, at a minimum, that give them access to the body of tweets from individuals. One Australian researcher, Jean Burgess, put it well: "There are two main research needs: one is the need for public, (semi)open and reusable archives of tweets, particularly for keywords and hashtags, [but also location data (Amanda add)]; and the other is the more specific needs of particular research groups to track *users* and their social networks, for whatever reason." For academic researchers and serious scholarly work, researchers can't just use a cool website that pulls up pie charts of stats about users - they need to be able to access the data as directly as possible. Here's a list of the types of data people are using for their research work: -geotagging -location -institutional tweets -@replies -hashtags and post keywords -collocating a single user's tweets -RT counts and tracking -words within tweets -follower/following data -number of tweets -links -images/avatars -lists Sometimes researchers need subsamples of the twitter stream based around: 1. A date and time (e.g. all tweets two days before, during and two days after the Superbowl) 2. Hashtags or keywords 3. Individuals (e.g. top ten most active people in a particular community of practice) 4. Random subsample of the public twitter stream I'm sure I've missed some items that creative researchers will want to use. I think the big takeaway is that researchers are doing a ton of creative things with Twitter data and would be hugely grateful for the most robust access you can offer them. Also, that as you continue to update Twitter's capabilities, researchers will want to take advantage of the new functionality. Scholars (myself included) find Twitter fascinating and truly want to do research that examines the ways in which Twitter is being used, which I think helps scholars, helps Twitter, and helps your users. I hope this is useful. Let me know if there's anything else I can do that would help make the case that Twitter can and should release its data to academic and non-profit researchers." -Amanda Amanda Lenhart Pew Research Center alenhart(a)pewinternet.org -----Original Message----- From: Andrea Kavanaugh [mailto:kavan@cs.vt.edu] Sent: Friday, March 11, 2011 5:09 PM To: Amanda Lenhart Subject: Re: [Air-L] Twitter no longer allowing use for scholarship - Update hi Amanda, can you send us what you sent to Twitter as our collective research needs?
