FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS: Social Innovation and Social Media (SISoM 2011)
by Karolin Kappler 22 Mar '11

22 Mar '11

APOLOGIES FOR CROSS POSTINGS * * * FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS - First international workshop on Social Innovation and Social Media (SISoM 2011) www.sites.google.com/site/sisom2011 *** Submission deadline extended to March 28th *** In conjunction with the International Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM 2011) July 21, 2011 -- Barcelona; Catalunya (Spain) TOPICS Objectives: The workshop seeks to integrate views at the intersection of several fields: computer and computational social science, policy design, social innovation, and technology development. The formal objective of the workshop is the collaborative drafting of a Manifesto on Social Media for Social Innovation, summarizing the challenges and proposals discussed at the workshop. The workshop will explore two dimensions along which research might help social innovation to take place at a larger scale: * The conceptual and computational development of new frameworks for public policy modeling and implementation to help public authorities to harness the full potential of Social Media and social innovation; * The design of new Social Media tools offering better support to social innovators and policy designers. Overview: Social innovation refers to new strategies, concepts, ideas and organizations that meet social needs of all kinds - from working conditions and education to community development and health - and that extend and strengthen civil society. [Wikipedia] There is an obvious interest in using Social Media to achieve greater proximity between administrations and citizens. Social innovations, encompassing new forms of private-public partnership, are increasingly seen as necessary to better address a number of pressing social problems. The idea behind it is that new forms of engagement of citizens and private organizations can bring about substantial improvements of productivity in the “social sector” (public services plus charity). Empirical research has allowed to identify some basic design principles and rules behind successful and sustained bottom-up collaborative arrangements, of which communication is one key ingredient. Therefore, it could be expected that properly applying existing and new Social Media tools to those communication procedures will be a means of achieving the improvements on speed and scale required to extend the reach of social innovation. At the same time, research in the design and modeling of policies taking full account of this potential will also be required. Research Topics: Topics of interest include, but are not restricted to the following: * Design of innovative tools for social participation and collaboration; * Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of social participation; * Challenges and opportunities regarding the use of Social Media to address public policy problems; * Case studies of successful applications of Social Media to achieve social innovation (in particular, combined with large-scale Social Media data analysis); * Policy areas best suited to apply Social Media as an instrument for social innovation (e.g. for inclusive audience: older people or developing countries). Important Dates: March 28, 2011 (EXTENDED): Paper Submission April 8, 2011: Acceptance Notification July 21, 2011: Workshop Submission: We invite original anonymized position papers up to 4 pages long. Papers should focus more on highlighting agenda issues than on research results. Submissions must be in English, must be formatted according to the AAAI template: http://www.aaai.org/Publications/Author/author.php; and must be made in PDF through EasyChair: www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=sisom2011<http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=sisom2011>. At least one of the authors of a submitted paper would be required to review other submissions, and at least one of the authors of an accepted paper would be required to attend the workshop. For further details on the submission process and the writing of theManifesto, please check the Workshop’s homepage. www.sites.google.com/site/sisom2011<http://www.sites.google.com/site/sisom2011> Karolin Eva Kappler "Información, Tecnología y Sociedad" Tel. 685851090 Barcelona Media – Centre d’Innovació Diagonal 177 Barcelona 08018 Tel: +34 93 238 1400

IR 12.0 (Seattle) Fee Waiver Application--DUE June 1
by Alex Halavais 22 Mar '11

22 Mar '11

Fee Waiver Program In order to increase the diversity of participation in the AoIR annual Internet Research (IR) conferences, the Association of Internet Researchers will make available up to three conference fee waivers per year. The number of fee waivers will depend first of all upon the ability of the conference budget to sustain such waivers (a judgment to be made by the AoIR Executive Committee upon the advice of the AoIR Treasurer and the local organizing committee) as well as upon the quality of the applications for fee waivers. Applications for fee waivers are invited from student or faculty authors whose paper or panel proposals have already been accepted via the AoIR IR conference reviewing process. All applications should be directed to the Vice-President of AoIR (Alex Halavais, vp(a)aoir.org) and must be received by June 1, 2010. Late applications cannot be considered. Applications should be no longer than 2 pages, and must include the following information: 1) A brief description of how the author’s presentation or contribution to the AoIR IR conference will uniquely articulate and/or represent a distinctive perspective (e.g., of persons and/or cultures) otherwise unlikely to be represented at the annual AoIR Internet Research conference. 2) An explanation of the author’s distinctive circumstances that would warrant a fee waiver. These may include, but are by no means limited to: * exceptionally limited financial resources (e.g., as a graduate student or scholar in a non-OECD country, as a disabled person on a limited income, etc.); * exceptional limits on institutional support otherwise normally available (e.g., travel funds, grant funds, etc.); * other exceptional circumstances that render the usual AoIR IR conference fees an insurmountable obstacle to attending the IR conference in order to present one’s own work. Applicants may also include a letter of support from someone familiar with her / his circumstances, special needs, etc. Such a letter is optional, however, not a requirement. Applications will be reviewed by the AoIR Executive Committee. Fee waivers will be awarded on the basis of the Executive Committee’s collective judgment as to which presentations will make the most distinctive contribution to the AoIR IR conference. In order to respect and protect the privacy of the applicants, all Executive Committee discussions and deliberations of fee waiver applications will be held in strict confidence. The AoIR Executive Committee regretfully acknowledges that there will be more fully meritorious applications than we will be able to award and support. Nonetheless we hope that awarded fee waivers will not only assist deserving scholars and researchers, but also thereby enrich the AoIR IR conferences in important new ways. Dear All, For those who are missing twapperkeeper services and cannot run their own twapperkeeper server, we've decided to released a small software we previously used for our reseach. This Java software uses a distributed architecture and allows you to do basically the same things that Twapperkeeper did. You can download the software together with a short manual here: http://is.gd/kQEmjk Please note that this is just an simplified alpha version of something used internally, nevertheless we hope it could help many researchers looking for a Twapperkeeper alternative. CFP "The Culture of Remix"
by Carla Ganito 21 Mar '11

21 Mar '11

*Research Center for Communication and Culture 2nd International Graduate Conference in Communication and Culture The Culture of Remix Lisbon, 13-14 October, 2011 * This inter-disciplinary graduate conference seeks to address questions concerning the multiple dimensions of remix at the intersection of culture and communication. Lawrence Lessig has proposed “remix” as one of the main outcomes of social and cultural practices enabled by new technologies that allow for easy production and sharing. Remix is the creative mixing of cultural elements, a collage, a blending, a hybridization of genres, creative destruction. Henry Jenkins talks of a “convergence culture” and many other authors refer a participatory turn. But this surge of creativity and participation also poses authority, legal, economic and ethical challenges. Against the hype of an amateur culture, many voices from academia and industry question the value of remixing practices, namely regarding authorship. According to the net-generation mentality, originality is a fallacy and legitimacy resides in authenticity. In the scope of this perspective, creativity is expressed in the way one approaches an existing text, or the text is reorganized; among critics, a set of questions on the cultural consequences of these new practices and values has been raised. This conference aims to bring together doctoral students, post-doc and junior researchers from different areas and disciplines to share research interests and works-in-progress, learn and engage in fresh intellectual discussion with international key academics and build a community of young scholars. We seek academic work from any field of communication or cultural studies. Papers are welcome on the topics listed below, amongst others: - The ethical dimensions of remix; - The politics of remix; - Technologies of remix; - Journalism and remix - Hybridization; - Participatory Culture; - The current challenges of/to authorship; - Entertainment as a remix; - Gender remix; - Remix in the literature and the arts; - The economics of remix; - Free culture; - Philosophical roots of remix; - Cultural citizenship; - Remix and Education: Learning by Remixing; - Remix and Identity; - Remixed Cultures; - Fandom. *Deadline for submissions: May 31st, 2011* The conference language is English. Please send a 250-word abstract, as well as a brief biographical note (100 words) to cultureremix(a)gmail.com by May 31st, 2011. Proposals should list paper title, name, institutional affiliation, and contact details. If you are submitting a work in progress, we welcome your submission! Please state that it is a work in progress in your abstract. We acknowledge receipt and answer to all paper proposals submitted. If you do not receive a reply from us in a week you should assume we did not receive your proposal. We suggest then resending it. Successful applicants will be notified by June 17th, 2011.
