Re: [Air-L] Prospects for Peace & Democracy in Russia (Barry Wellman)
by Inna Kouper 26 Mar '11

I hope that the book by Metta Spencer is much more complicated and that the abstract of the talk misrepresented it. We already have claims made by scholars that there would be no orange revolution in Ukraine without livejournal, that facebook and twitter brought changes to Egypt, and so on. Such claims are not only technologically deterministic, they lack historical, sociological, and ethnographic sensibilities. Grassroots movements in Russia need much more than skype (or any new media for that matter) to "proliferate transnational dialogues". It would benefit us as scholars and activists to at least acknowledge that even if we don't have means to theorize and practice it. CfP: ACM CSCW 2012 Papers & Notes: expanded focus, new review process, deadline June 3
by Joe McCarthy 25 Mar '11

25 Mar '11

The ACM Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Social Media is a premier venue for presenting research in the design and use of technologies that affect groups, organizations, and communities. CSCW encompasses both the technical and social challenges encountered when supporting collaboration. The development and application of new technologies continues to enable new ways of working together and coordinating activities. Although work is an area of focus, CSCW embraces research and technologies supporting a wide range of recreational and social activities using a diverse range of devices. The conference brings together top researchers and practitioners from academia and industry who are interested in both technical and social aspects of collaboration. CSCW 2012 will be held February 11-15, 2012, in Seattle, Washington, USA. The deadline for Papers & Notes submission is June 3; titles and abstracts of Papers & Notes must be submitted by May 27. The early submission date of June 3 reflects a new review process, wherein authors of promising submissions will be given a month to revise their 10-page Papers and/or 4-page Notes to address concerns raised by reviewers and increase their potential for achieving the level of clear contribution required for a CSCW Paper or Note. We have instituted this process to promote greater diversity while maintaining the high level of quality expected of CSCW Papers and Notes. Only complete submissions will be reviewed, and not all submissions will be eligible for revision, but we hope that the opportunity for revision in some cases may help prospective authors from outside the traditional CSCW community to structure the presentation of their work in a format that is better aligned with CSCW standards. The complete Call for Participation, including information about Workshops, CSCW Horizon, Demonstrations, Panels, Posters, Videos, the Doctoral Colloquium, and Student Volunteers - as well as Papers and Notes - can be found at cscw2012.org <http://cscw2012.org>. Prospects for Peace & Democracy in Russia
by Barry Wellman 25 Mar '11

25 Mar '11

Speaker: Metta Spencer Date: Thursday March 31st Dept of Sociology, U of Toronto, 725 Spadina Avenue, 1200-1:30 Title: "The Prospects for Peace and Democracy in Russia" Abstract: Metta Spencer's new book, The Russian Quest for Peace and Democracy, is based mainly on hundreds of interviews between 1982 and 2010 that she conducted in Russia and Eastern Europe. It reflects not only the stories of leading members of Gorbachev's advisers, but also intellectuals and dissidents. Focusing on the remarkable interactions between Russian and foreign elites, especially during the Gorbachev years, it shows how markedly his democratic and peaceable political, foreign, and military policies came from Western peace workers. Because those transnational civil society organizations were obviously "bridging" groups (in Putnam's terminology) they were especially conductive to democracy. For twenty years, however, such associations have diminished-largely because Putin, to prevent a Russian color revolution, has blocked international political projects. For the sake of democratization, Spencer proposes that the new media (e.g. Skype) now be used to proliferate thousands of sustained transnational dialogues at the grassroots level.

BODY { font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12px; } BODY { font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12px; }Dear Jeremy and AoIR, I think http://www.webnographers.org [1] in one form or another will be up again at some point. It's presently down, partly due to spam. Webnographers.org was an extensive wiki-listing of papers, books, videos, syllabi, tools and much more, which Jenny Ryan originated, and for which I was the main aggregator. World University and School's 'Internet Studies' wiki subject page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Internet_Studies [2] - also has some of these open teaching and learning resources - such as papers, books, videos, syllabi, tools - and is growing. I hope both wiki Webnographers.org and WUaS's 'Internet Studies' subject page will further complement AoIR's wiki. open access - special issue of Etikk i praksis / Nordic Journal of Applied Ethics
by Charles Ess 24 Mar '11

24 Mar '11

Dear AoIR-ists, On behalf of my co-editors May Thorseth (NTNU, Trondheim) and Johnny Søraker (Twente), and our contributors, I'm very pleased to announce that our recent special issue of Etikk i praksis (the Nordic Journal of Applied Ethics) on the ethical and social aspects of contemporary communication media (Etiske og sosiale aspekter ved moderne kommunikasjonsmidler), with a specific focus on mobility and ubiquitous computing, is now available online: <http://tapir.pdc.no/index.php?utgave=49422&p=EIP> (Depending on your browser, you may also have to click on the "Etikk i praksis" button on the upper-right to get the Table of Contents to load properly.) >From here, you can either read the articles online or download them as PDF files. English-readers interested in the ethical, social, and political dimensions of mobile communication will be especially keen to look at: Rich Ling & Rhonda McEwen, Mobile communication and ethics: implications of everyday actions on social order Litska Strikwerda, Information privacy, the right to receive information and (mobile) ICTs In these directions, readers of the Scandinavian languages in play will also be interested in: Anders Albrechtslund, Deltagende overvågning og sociale fællesskaber på nettet [Participatory surveillance and online social networking] Elin Palm, När vården flyttar hem till dig den mobila vårdens etik [When health care moves in the ethics of mobile health care] along with the additional articles and book review (of the recent books by Jaron Lanier and Nicolas Carr). Echoing our recent discussion regarding publication practices, it is worth noting that the publisher of the journal, Tapir Akademisk Forlag, pursues a mixed model: the paper journal comes out first to subscribers, including libraries - followed by the online, open access version a few months later. In any event, our many thanks and congratulations to our contributors, including our AoIR colleagues, whose articles make for rich and insightful reading indeed. cheers and all the best, - charles ess Institut for Informations- og Medievidenskab Helsingforsgade 14 8200 Århus N.
