Cyber Crime

I am writing a book chapter on Cyber crime in Africa focusing on four countries - Egypt, Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria. The focus is on various cybercrimes and activities relating to Africa, various means by which individual and corporate African organizations protect themselves from various crimes that have been perpetrated through the internet, African legislative regulations with the aim of determining their effectiveness in curbing cybercrimes over the years, definition of privacy in Africa and how various government interventions have violated the issue of personal and corporate privacy in Africa, just to mention a few. The IEEE Life Members' Prize The IEEE Life Members' Prize in Electrical History, supported by the IEEE Life Members' Fund and administered by the Society for the History ofTechnology, is awarded annually to the best paper in the history of electrotechnology—power, electronics, telecommunications, and computer science—published during the preceding year. Any article published in a learned periodical is eligible if it treats the art or engineering aspects of electrotechnology and its practitioners. The article must be written in English, although the journal or periodical in which it appears may be a foreign language publication. The prize consists of a cash award of $500 and a certificate. To nominate an article, please send a copy of the paper to each member of the prize committee. Deadline is April 15. Mobile Family Interaction: How to use mobile technology to bring trust, safety and wellbeing into families Workshop organized in Mobile CHI 2011 30.8.-2.9. @ Stockholm, Sweden. This workshop aims to deepen our understanding of mobile technology use by preteens. The ubiquitous nature of this technology opens up new possibilities for technology use and abuse that need to be considered by parents and governments. This ongoing technological change will also affect family interaction and parenthood, bringing up new uses for mobile technology throughout families. In this workshop, we welcome multiple approaches to start to explore this domain. We particularly welcome contributions from the following approaches: * Empirical studies of preteen use of mobile technology, including use for communication among friends and family. Empirical analysis of themes, opportunities, coping strategies and mediation is also welcomed. * Case studies of campaigns and other efforts to improve media literacy skills, and child-child and child-adult mediation, with particular emphasis on the development of best practices, as well as theoretical work on topics such as child-child or child-adult mediation. * Presentations of innovative solutions and concepts that improve family life and child empowerment. The solutions will likely include mobile aspects, but may include also other media sources, such as the Web. This is a cross-disciplinary workshop, and we explicitly invite contributions from a range of disciplines, including anthropology and ethnography, sociology, education, design studies, social sciences, science and technology studies and computer science. twitter useless to study?

As an object of study, its hard to do quant analysis of Twitter now because so much of it is spam (unless you're studying spam, that is). And even qualitative analyses will have to be careful. Our 2 Twitterology papers got into the sweet spot when Twitter was an appreciable size but before spam dominated (about 80% of my new would-be Followers) OTOH, I find Twitter useful for research leads -- such as the Atlantic article a tweep broadcast today about how the Internet almost fractured -- or Zeynep et al's (@techsoc) discussion of social media and MENA revolutions. Website: https://sites.google.com/site/ht2011win/ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The emergence of new social technologies has not only changed our everyday life but also has led to new forms of collective information goods such as media collections, commentary and software. Innovative online production systems have been designed for people to share their ideas, their experiences and their knowledge enabling the collaborative production of such information goods. The nature of these collective information goods produced using online production systems ranges from pooled information (e.g., Flickr, del.icio.us, Slashdot) to structured information (e.g., Wikipedia, Factual.com) and tightly coupled information (e.g., open source software). This spectrum describes both the coupling of the components of an information good as well as to what extent certain coordination, communication and collaboration processes between participants were required to develop this good. Concretely, these information goods consist of a social dimension which comprises links between people based on their interactions and the information dimension which are links based on syntactic, semantic or logical relations within these goods. Thus, to effectively understand collective information goods, one must take a multi-dimensional approach that addresses the interdependence between social relationships and the networked information that those relationships produce. Only recently have researchers begun to study the collective information goods using multi-dimensional approaches. This workshop aims to bring together experts in network analysis, information networks, semantics and social media to further the development and exchange of knowledge around computational network analysis methods for multi-dimensional networks. We are particularly interested in work that convers the following three areas: * Quality - how do we measure quality of a collective information good using network analysis? What is the relationship between quality information and reputation? How do online production systems cater for quality? * Influence - how do we measure the influence of information networks on social networks and vice versa? Are types of networks more influential than others? * Evolution - how do information and social networks co-evolve?
