21 Mar '11

Hi all ! Matthieu Latapy ( http://www-rp.lip6.fr/~latapy <http://www-rp.lip6.fr/%7Elatapy%29>) will animate the "Paper-Sprint" workshop at Fabelier, Wed. 20th April 2011, 7pm. http://fabelier.org/papersprint-by-matthieu-latapy/ The goal of this meeting is to explore the possibility of writing from scratch a (reasonably good) research paper within 4 hours. We plan to discuss how to identify a suitable topic, a target conference or journal, how to gather and select ideas and references in order to structure the paper, and then write it down, with the most legitimate manners. The basics of paper submission processes will be discussed too. In order to make the best of this event, please prepare it by selecting paper topics, example papers, calls for papers, suitable scientific ideas, etc.. Please add any suggestion to this event program by talking directly on Fabelier's mailing-list ( https://groups.google.com/group/fabelier?hl=fr) All best, Antoine http://ant1.cc/ ________________ (FRENCH) Matthieu Latapy animera un atelier sur l'écriture rapide d'article de recherche au Fabelier, le mercredi 20 avril à 19H. À moins qu'il n'y est que des francophones parmi les participants, l'atelier se déroulera en anglais.

by Stuart Shulman 21 Mar '11

21 Mar '11

Since we just got our draft program out last Friday, we are extending the early registration period for JITP 2011 through March 27: http://www.umass.edu/jitp/2011.htm Students - $50 All others - $75 The conference highlights include a keynote from Jaimie Teevan of Microsoft Research: http://www.umass.edu/jitp/Teevan.htm We are also pleased to offer an invited panel with Karen Fisher, Kirsten Foot and Karine Nahon, three huge stars of the UW research community, on the future of data and methods. In addition to our selected research papers, there will be a vendor panel on "Research in the Cloud" and a Round Table discussion on the future of JITP. My five year stint as Editor of JITP is concluding soon and we are discussing important issues of editorial rotation, requirements for Board membership, and the direction of the journal for the next five years. If you have not been to a JITP annual meeting and you want to shape the future of the journal, this is a great conference to attend. We are typically about 75 people in one room for two days with sustained interactions. Presenters of research papers enjoy extended speaking slots and longer than usual Q&A. The Journal of Information Technology & Politics is the Official Journal of the Information and Technology and Politics Section of the American Political Science Association. The journal community, however, is comprised of more than 770 "members" who are drawn from a wide range of disciplines and countries. Hope to see you in Seattle May 16 & 17, 2011. thanks, ~Stu

Global perspectives on media piracy: Joe Karaganis and Ravi Sundaram (Melbourne, 6pm Thursday)
by Ramon Lobato 21 Mar '11

21 Mar '11

*With apologies for cross-posting* The Institute for Social Research, Swinburne University of Technology and the ARC Centre of Excellence in Creative Industries and Innovation present an evening of public lectures by Joe Karaganis (Social Science Research Council, New York) and Ravi Sundaram (Sarai/Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi) on the topic of media piracy and informal economies. 1. MEDIA PIRACY IN EMERGING ECONOMIES: Joe Karaganis This presentation will introduce a major collaborative study of music, film, and software piracy conducted in India, Brazil, South Africa, Russia, and Mexico between 2007 and 2010. The study focuses on the relationship between the licit and illicit media markets in these countries, and on the emergence of enforcement as a primary concern of the knowledge economy. Joe Karaganis is Media, Technology and Culture program director at the Social Science Research Council in New York. His work focuses on changes in the organization of cultural production in the digital context and on the intersection between information policy and social practice. He is editor of the collection Structures of Participation in Digital Culture (SSRC, 2007). 2. POSTCOLONIAL MEDIA AFTER THE INFORMAL: Ravi Sundaram Informality has arrived on the postcolonial media landscape with a kinetic force in the last two decades. More media is now distributed through bazaars, small markets, street vendors and neighbourhood retail that ever before. Informality is seen as a threat by large media industries, who see it as distributing pirate media or simply indifferent to the Law of Property. Informality, once a grey zone of paralegal production and work for economists, now presents media research with a series of new research questions. What are the stakes for media after the informal? What is the relationship between the practices of postcolonial informality and the larger landscape of new media? Is there a connection between the street market and the world after Wikileaks? This lecture will suggest that we are entering a new media condition today that may disrupt many of the received models of cultural modernity of the last 100 years. Ravi Sundaram is a Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi and Co-Director of the Sarai programme on Media and Urban Culture. He is the author of Pirate Modernity: Delhi's Media Urbanism (Routledge, 2009). Respondents: Stuart Cunningham (ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation, QUT), Kathy Bowrey (Faculty of Law, UNSW), Julian Thomas (Institute for Social Research, Swinburne). DATE: Thursday March 24, 2011 TIME: 6pm-8pm VENUE: Village Roadshow Theatrette, State Library of Victoria (enter via 179 La Trobe St) CONTACT: rlobato(a)swin.edu.au / (03) 9214 8637 All welcome. Current trends in audio-visual digital cultures (23rd March, London)
by Daniel Villar Onrubia 21 Mar '11

21 Mar '11

We are pleased to invite you to participate in the event "Current trends in audio-visual digital cultures," this Wednesday (March 23rd) in London at the Instituto Cervantes (102 Eaton Square) from 6.30pm to 8.30 pm. This event is part of a series of “Bonus Tracks” organised as part of the Remix Cinema Workshop (Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford), and will consist of two talks and an informal networking session which is aimed at creators, researchers, and professionals involved in initiatives related to emerging audiovisual practices. /////// Intro Networked technologies are facilitating the development of a wide range of new media practices and, ultimately, contributing to notable shifts in audiovisual cultures. For example, we see the proliferation of remix practices in DIY media in the context of every-day life. Likewise, in the domain of independent film-making, online community platforms and innovative production and distribution systems are offering unprecedented possibilities allowing for new forms of co-creation in constellations that were not possible prior to the widespread uptake of the Internet and, more recently, the development of social media applications. /////// Talks Dr. Antoni Roig Telo and Joan Carles Martorell provide an overview of emerging trends in contemporary audio-visual digital cultures in Spain. Each talk will focus on a number of initiatives and projects exemplifying innovative ways in which digital technologies are harnessed for the collaborative production of audiovisual content. While the examples are primarily from the Spanish arena, discussions are placed in a broader international context. Dr. Antoni Roig Telo has done extensive research on a broad scope of audio-visual creation, including emerging forms of participatory film-making, machinima and modding. He will offer a critical glance at phenomena such as co-creation, collaboration and crowdsourcing by drawing from cases of independent film productions. More specifically, he will discuss the Spanish indie projects The Cosmonaut, La Wikipeli and Panzer Chocolate. Dr. Roig Telo has PhD in Information and Knowledge Society, and is the Director of the postgraduate programme in Audiovisual Media Innovation at the Open University of Catalonia (Spain) Joan Carles Martorell will present EMBED.at, a platform where audiovisual researchers, professionals and festivals meet to talk, think and test old and new ideas on cinema, television, games, internet, transmedia, remix, copyleft and people. EMBED is promoting initiatives fostering the disclosure of cultural audiovisual source codes, a metaphor for exploring, showcasing and distributing audiovisual content by inviting film-makers, musicians and artists to share their sources of inspirations. EMBED is an initiative of Festivalito, Movil Film Fest, Yerblues.net and ZEMOS98 with the support of Instituto Cervantes and Junta de Andalucía (all based in Spain). /////// Networking session Following the talks we have scheduled time for an informal networking session aimed at artists, creators, media professionals, and academics with interest in any aspect of audio-visual digital culture. We encourage anyone interested in this session to bring flyers or other printed materials explaining their work or projects (please include contact details). The aim of the session is to facilitate the exchange of ideas, knowledge and possibly establish contacts for future collaborations among the participants. /////// Sign up for this event The event is free, but registration is required. If you would like to attend the event please send an email to reservas.londres(a)cervantes.es or make a call: (0)20 7201 0750. If you are interested in participating in the networking session as well please send an email to inquiry(a)remixcinema.org including a few lines about your work, and any URL or contact details you would like us to distribute to other participants. /////// About the Remix Cinema Workshop This event is part of the Remix Cinema Workshop, an international 2-day conference on audiovisual digital cultures. Remix Cinema is a student-led initiative funded by the Beyond Text programme of the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC). It is organised by the Oxford Internet Institute (University of Oxford, UK), in collaboration with UNIA Prácticas y Culturas Digitales (Spain) and it is supported by St. Antony’s College (Oxford University), Modern Art Oxford and the Instituto Cervantes (London). book on participatory culture
by Mirko Tobias Schaefer 20 Mar '11

20 Mar '11

Dear all, a couple of weeks ago Amsterdam University Press released my book 'Bastard Culture! How User Participation Transforms Cultural Production'. It is an updated and expanded version of my 2008 dissertation and includes a new chapter on the discourse on 'social media'. My aim in this project has been to deconstruct the ideological connotation of participation and to offer a pragmatic view on technology and media practices in digital culture. The book is published under creative commons and is also available for free download: http://mtschaefer.net/entry/bastard-culture-how-user-participation-transfor… Comments and critical feedback are very welcome, mirko Mirko Tobias Schäfer | Assistant Professor for New Media & Digital Culture | Department for Media and Culture Studies | Faculty of Humanities | Utrecht University | MCW | Muntstraat 2a | 3512 EV Utrecht | Visitors address: KNG 20, room 2.13a | T: +31-644620751 | M: m.t.schaefer(a)uu.nl | W: www.mtschaefer.net

CFP: Digital Diasporas and Transnational Social Movements: Capital, Labor, Mobility and Identity
by Radhika Gajjala 20 Mar '11

20 Mar '11

[sorry for crossposting - also feel free to fwd as relevant] *CFP: Digital Diasporas and Transnational Social Movements: Capital, Labor, Mobility and Identity* Editor – Radhika Gajjala (see http://personal.bgsu.edu/~radhik ) “Digital diasporas” occur at the intersection of local/ global, national/ international, private/public, offline/online and embodied/disembodied. In digital diasporas, a multiplicity of representations, mass media broadcasts, textual and visual performances and interpersonal interactions occur. The term *“digital diaspora”* is most often used to talk about how diasporic populations the world over use the Internet to connect to each other. Scholars such as Anna Everett (2009) and Jeniffer Brinkerhoff (2009) have each used the phrase in relation to very specific situated histories of forced migrations (African American histories of slavery) and transnational travel respectively. The link to labor flows and hierarchies of colonialisms and digital globalization is clear in both. In most general usage of the phrase “digital diaspora,” however, it is used to describe migrant populations without attention to the specific conditions of subjectivity that produces diasporas. Further, it is interesting that international NGOs (specifically the United Nations) and Transnational corporations as well as National businesses have mobilized the notion of digital diaspora in “reverse brain-drain” efforts where very materially successful transnationals and migrants with moneys to invest actually get to return home. In the past I have edited a couple publications that center around South Asian Digital Diasporas (a Special Section of New Media and Society in 2006) and South Asian Technospace (a co-edited collection of essays). My intent with this next volume on digital diasporas is to include material that helps elaborate on the more current platforms where links between transnational capital and labor flows can be mapped in the context of the increasing NGOization and ITization of the globe. Thus questions include (but are not limited to) – why “digital diaspora” and why now? What forms a “digital diaspora” within gaming environments and social networks? How are non-profits and transnational corporations (similarly or differently) mobilizing this idea of digital diaspora in relation to labor and capital flows? How does a "digital diaspora" form - how does it "look" - how does it function and so on. >From prospective contributors, I will need an extended abstract of 800 to 1000 words that fleshes out the theoretical and methodological approaches in relation to a specific site that will be examined. Due Dates: 1] Extended abstract due on June 1st, 2011 2] You will hear back about your abstracts by June 30th 2011 – with suggestions on how you can proceed if the abstract is considered acceptable for the collection. 3] Full essays are due by September 1, 2011. If you have questions regarding the publisher and what exactly I’m looking for and so on – feel free to email me – <Radhika(a)cyberdiva.org> radhika(a)cyberdiva.org <Radhika(a)cyberdiva.org> with the subject header “digital diasporas.” -- Radhika Gajjala Director, American Culture Studies Professor of Communication Studies and Cultural Studies 101 East Hall Bowling Green State University Bowling Green, OH 43403 http://personal.bgsu.edu/~radhik
