by Robert Sandusky 17 Mar '11

17 Mar '11

See https://www.dataone.org/content/2011-summer-internship-program for further details and application instructions. Please post / distribute widely. The Data Observation Network for Earth (DataONE) is a virtual organization dedicated to providing open, persistent, robust, and secure access to biodiversity and environmental data, supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation. DataONE is pleased to announce the availability of summer research internships for undergraduates, graduate students and recent postgraduates. Program Structure Up to eight interns will be accepted in 2011, each paired with one primary mentor and, in some cases, secondary mentors. Interns need not necessarily be at the same location or institution as their mentor(s). Interns and mentors are expected to have a face-to-face meeting at the beginning of the summer, and interns are encouraged to attend the DataONE All-Hands Meeting in the fall to present the results of their work. DataONE will pay all necessary travel expenses. Schedule * March 15 - Application period opens * April 8 - Deadline for receipt of applications at midnight Pacific time * April 15 - Notification of acceptance. Scheduling of face-to-face kickoff meetings based on availability of interns and mentors * May 23 - Program begins* * June 27 - Midterm evaluations * July 29 - Program concludes * October 18-20 - DataONE All-Hands-Meeting, New Mexico (attendance encouraged) * Allowance will be made for students who are unavailable during these date due to their school calendar. Eligibility The program is open to all undergraduate students, graduate students, and postgraduates who have received their masters or doctorate within the past five years. Given the broad range of projects, there are no restrictions on academic backgrounds or field of study. Interns must be at least 18 years of age by the program start date, must be currently enrolled or employed at a university or other research institution and must currently reside in, and be eligible to work in, the United States. Interns are expected to be available approximately 40 hours/week during the internship period (noted below) with significant availability during the normal business hours. Interns from previous years are eligible to participate. Financial Support Interns will receive a stipend of $4,500 for participation, paid in two installments (one at the midterm and one at the conclusion of the program). In addition, required travel expenses will be borne by DataONE. Participation in the program after the mid-term is contingent on satisfactory performance. The University of New Mexico will administer funds. Interns will need to supply their own computing equipment and Internet connection. For students who are not US citizens or permanent residents, complete visa information will be required, and it may be necessary for the funds to be paid through the student’s university or research institution. In such cases, the student will need to provide the necessary contact information for their organization. -- Robert J. call for expressions of interest: Critical Theory of The Internet Project
by jeremy hunsinger 17 Mar '11

17 Mar '11

distribute as appropriate -jh Does the internet need critical theory? Does the internet have critical theory? What is would non/traditional critical theory/ies have to say about the internet? How do the schools of critical theory engage with the internet? and Why bother with critical theory in this day and age? Those and others are the topics of the project on the Critical Theory of the Internet. Some of you may have heard me mention this project before. It is meant to be a fairly large project, parallel to one of the recent handbooks, only it will be free, and it will be open, much like my last book "Putting knowledge to work and letting information play", which has had over 3000 downloads so far from my servers. The critical theory of the internet project will be a publication distributed electronically via the internet, comprised of works, textual and or internet-based mixed media. It is going to be produced and distributed through the Center for Digital Discourse and Culture via the internet. This call is for expressions of interests to be a topical or area sub-editor and thus be a member of the editorial board of the volume. The volume is intended to find utility in having breadth and depth, and since I could not do that alone, sub-editors will be necessary. As a sub-editor, you will be responsible for collecting, obtaining permissions to publish, and editing 3-7 'papers' or 'works' of 4000-15000 words on a specific area of your interest in critical theory that will comprise an identifiable 'section' of the volume. A section for instance could be 'Frankfurt School Traditions' , 'Critical Theories of Learning', or 'Labor'. You are also encouraged to submit a paper yourself. You also will likely be invited to attend a workshop or two at various conferences to discuss your work, etc. As a sub-editor: You will have to be able to work within google docs to the extent possible with your 'works'. You will have to be able to meet deadlines within reasonable standards. You will be responsible for marshaling the texts through a period of open peer review. and Hopefully you will do this with good judgment and applicable grace. The timeline for the project is not immediate, nor rushed, I expect it will take 3-4 years to come to final completion. An expression of interest will comprise of: your name your topic in 100 words or less (main idea and how it relates to critical theory and the internet) your academic, artistic, or other credentials (especially if we've not worked together before) sent by April 3rd 2011 questions and expressions of interest can be sent to jeremy(a)tmttlt.com Jeremy Hunsinger Center for Digital Discourse and Culture Virginia Tech Live without dead time. -graffitti Paris 1968

Thank Peter for your note. If anyone else tried to access the survey Wednesday afternoon, the university servers were down the better part of the day (of course they would go down after sending out a call to do the survey!) I just checked and all is working again now. C&W 2011 Online / Collaborvention

Collaborvention 2011: A Computers and Writing Unconference http://computersandwriting.org/collaborvention-2011-cfp<https://owa1.brookdalecc.edu/OWA/redir.aspx?C=ec11ef027ff249b4bd1ae96cb617b…> Having seen a surge of interest for an online conference that would take Computers and Writing in a new, more collaborative and less hierarchical direction, we announce Collaborvention 2011: A Computers and Writing Unconference. As with successful face-to-face unconferences, we hope to see collaboration and synthesis without formal proposals, acceptances, or a program set in stone before the online conference begins. This activity will take place during two windows. 1. Connections window: Starting immediately, participants can toss out ideas, put together events and connect with collaborators. We expect most of that activity to happen in cyberspace, using the #cwuncon hashtag, on listservs like techrhet and wpa-l, through collaborvention groups in social networks, through local collaborations, and in any other ways that will help the conference achieve a critical mass of interest and participation. 2. Unconference window: Between April 22nd and May 13th (prior to the f2f Computers and Writing conference) and between May 22nd and May 30th (after the f2f conference), the unconference window will open. Events during the unconference might take the form of a hosted conversation, a showcase of a project or activity, a presentation, or really anything. We also hope to see links develop between the unconference and the f2f conference on May 19-22. As you begin planning your event with others, you'll want to review the Instructions for Submitting to Collaborvention 2011. http://computersandwriting.org/collaborvention-2011-submissions<https://owa1.brookdalecc.edu/OWA/redir.aspx?C=ec11ef027ff249b4bd1ae96cb617b…> The instructions will provide you with a link to the submission form for adding your event to the Collaborvention 2011 Event Schedule. If you have questions about the unconference, the support documents offer quite a bit of additional information. http://computersandwriting.org/collaborvention-2011-help<https://owa1.brookdalecc.edu/OWA/redir.aspx?C=ec11ef027ff249b4bd1ae96cb617b…> We look forward to seeing your participation! http://computersandwriting.org/collaborvention-2011-home<https://owa1.brookdalecc.edu/OWA/redir.aspx?C=ec11ef027ff249b4bd1ae96cb617b…> The Collaborvention 2011 Facilitators
