As part of our new UK Economic and Social Research Council Doctoral Training Centre we have a number of MA/MSc/Phd scholarships available for study across the social sciences at the University of Essex. In Sociology we're offering a number of training pathways including: • Sociological Research • Survey Methodology • Longitudinal Social Research which include supervision in (amongst others) • Economic sociology • Science in society • Survey methodology We would welcome applications from students interested in studying most aspects of socio-technical change through these pathways and approaches. We would especially welcome students interested in making use of: • 'Understanding Society', the new UK 40,000-strong household longitudinal study (http://www.understandingsociety.org.uk/) and it's predecessor the British Household Panel Survey (http://www.iser.essex.ac.uk/survey/bhps) Together these datasets provide a unique longitudinal resource tracking the socio-ecomic circumstances and, more latterly, new media use of UK citizens over the last 20 years. Both of these surveys are/were lead by our colleagues at Essex's renowned Institute for Social and Economic Research (http://www.iser.essex.ac.uk/) to which our students have everyday access. • two unique telephone call record datasets from the late 1990s collected by BT plc and licensed to the University of Essex for research purposes. The first contains records of all outgoing calls made by a sample of 100,000 households across the UK in each of October and March in 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998. Call for Teaching Ideas - Social Media & Revolution

Julie Wilson and I created the website www.teachingmedia.org to help college-level, media studies faculty and instructors share teaching ideas and resources such as recommended readings, media clips, assignments, and syllabi. We're trying to create an online commons for media studies pedagogy. In addition to housing an ongoing database of teaching ideas, we're periodically posting calls for ideas about specific topics. Our first topic: In the wake of recent revolutions and popular protests in Moldova, Iran, Tunisia, and Egypt, there has been a lot of speculation about the relationship between these social uprisings, authoritarian states, and social media applications such Facebook and Twitter. How might you examine this relationship in an undergraduate media studies class? Have you come across any texts, articles, or podcasts you’d recommend assigning? Internet Taxation: Call for Papers (deadline 31 May 2011)

Hello all, Policy and Internet is calling for papers for a forthcoming special issue on Internet taxation (paper deadline: 31 May 2011). See: http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/news/?id=453 The seamless transmission of digitally malleable products across jurisdictions, with the potential for bypassing of governmental controls, leads to many unique problems in Internet taxation. The issue will synthesize the extant research in the area and include recent research developments. The goal is to improve the understanding of the issues involved for both researchers and policy makers, to provide policy recommendations, and to suggest avenues for further research in the area. Papers should be based on empirical research and analysis and help to further theoretical and/or methodological development. In all cases, authors should consider the policy implications of the research presented. (2010). *The corporate blog as an emerging genre of computer-mediated communication: features, constraints, discourse situation. * (S. Hagenhoff, D. Hogrefe, E. Mittler, M. Schumann, G. Spindler, & V. Wittke, eds.) Göttinger Schriften zur Internetforschung (Vol. 7). Göttingen: Universitätsverlag Göttingen. Abstract: Digital technology is increasingly impacting how we keep informed, how we communicate professionally and privately, and how we initiate and maintain relationships with others. The function and meaning of new forms of computer-mediated communication (CMC) is not always clear to users on the onset and must be negotiated by communities, institutions and individuals alike. This thesis examines the linguistic and rhetorical properties of the weblog, another relatively young genre of CMC, to determine its function in private and professional (business) communication. It approaches the question of what functions blogs realize for authors and readers and argues that corporate blogs, which, like blogs by private individuals, are a highly diverse in terms of their form, function and intended audience, essentially mimic key characteristics of private blogs in order to appear open, non-persuasive and personal, all essential qualities for companies that wish to make a positive impression on their constituents. Undergrad software studies seminar question

dear AoIR Listers, I am currently working on a syllabus for an undergraduate software studies seminar. While I have been able to find essays that perform close readings on video games and digital art pieces, I have been having more trouble with finding articles that perform similar types of close readings on commercial software (like Microsoft Word, Final Cut Pro, TurboTax, WindowsXP, etc). If anyone knows of good essays that employ semiotic, phenomenological, and/or deconstructive methodologies in the analysis of these forms of software, I would be quite appreciative. IR12 help with Paticipation Panel version 2

Hello are there any senior scholars who would like to help put together another participation and community/politics/art online panel? I would like to write about exclusion and the digital divide and DIY punk rock art as well there was early interest in elections participation online when I first suggested a political participation panel. There are two of us interested in this panel 2 submission right now and I would need a more senior scholar to help the process along. Although I sometimes write on the Internet at work at Statistics Canada it is not my main duties at work and I am not working in a school nor do I have a Ph.D. I think we would want more than one participation panel and more performance arts than just online games eh? Colleagues, Please pass this on to anyone you know who might be interested... ----------------------------------------------------------- *Call for Chapters - “The Intersectional Internet: Race, Gender, and Culture Online” edited by André Brock (University of Iowa)* *Technology as Culture: Media, Machines, and Ideology* I am soliciting research articles or essays for an edited collection on the production, maintenance, or contestation of cultural identities in information and communication technologies. I invite contributions from scholars and practitioners in any field or endeavor that approaches information and communication technologies from a cultural or humanist perspective. *I am interested in chapters that contextualize ICTs within sociocultural contexts drawing upon the interactions of multiple categorical axes of identity (e.g., race and class). * ** The collection, entitled “The Intersectional Internet: Race, Sex, and Culture Online”, will be published by Peter Lang in late 2012 as part of the Digital Editions series (Steve Jones, series editor). For this collection, intersectionality frames the examination of intersecting, multiple identities that complicate, extend, and maintain Internet/ICT beliefs, design, and practices. ICTs recreate social worlds *in situ*, removed from direct physical and emotional feedback and contravening time and geographical constraints. However, this social separation from the material world still retains ideologies born of physical, temporal, and social beliefs. That ideological retention can be seen in technological beliefs privileging governments over citizens, corporations over people, and the expansion of white privilege in cyberspace. Contributions should address technocultural beliefs from a structural perspective, examining institutional discourses about technology’s effects on perceptions of intellect, sociability, progress, or culture as mediated by technology. Contributions to this collection could consider but are not limited to: - technology-based debates on privacy, surveillance, or insurrection - identity formation in new media - public policy debates about the expansion of broadband to underserved areas - Internal or external discourses about technology’s possibilities for mainstream or minority cultures. - technoculture and the West - the Social Web a decade after 9/11 Authors are requested to submit an abstract of no more than 750 words (in plain text or word format) by *March 15, 2010* to andre-brock(a)uiowa.edu.
