Narrative analysis of social networks
by Sara Buggy 08 Mar '11

08 Mar '11

Hello all, I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of some references regarding narrative analysis of CMC? I'm doing PhD research on Irish young adults' identity construction and performance on social network sites, and am utilising a multidisciplinary methodology that includes this approach. However, my grounding in linguistics is limited, and I would very much appreciate it if anyone had any recommendations for texts in this area. To date, I have been reading more general texts, but if you are aware of anything CMC-specific, it would be very gratefully received. Kind regards, Sara Buggy sara.buggy(a)ul.ie

Re: [Air-L] Air-L Digest, Vol 79, Issue 26
by Olli Sotamaa 08 Mar '11

08 Mar '11

Hi all, Game Studies: The International Journal of Computer Game Research has just published its latest issue (Volume 11, Issue 1, February 2011). All articles are available at: http://gamestudies.org/1101 Enjoy! Olli Sotamaa / guest co-editor -- Olli Sotamaa // Postdoctoral Researcher School of Information Sciences // University of Tampere olli.sotamaa(a)uta.fi // Skype: olli.sotamaa // +358 50 420 1472 *-----------* EDITORIAL Special Issue - Game Reward Systems by guest editors Mikael Jakobsson and Olli Sotamaa The guest editors introduce this special issue on game reward systems by discussing its origin, the focus, the need for further studies, and by presenting the included papers. http://gamestudies.org/1101/articles/editorial_game_reward_systems *-----------* ARTICLES Hats of Affect: A Study of Affect, Achievements and Hats in Team Fortress 2 by Christopher Moore Virtual millinery items were introduced as achievement based rewards for players of Team Fortress 2 in 2009. With attention to these highly sought after items, this article is concerned with promoting attention to the many ‘affects’ involved in the design and play of First Person Shooter (FPS) games. http://gamestudies.org/1101/articles/moore *-----------* Achievements, Motivations and Rewards in Faunasphere by Jason Begy, Mia Consalvo Multiple frameworks for examining the motivations and achivements of MMO players exist, but many are based on assumptions about what kinds of fictional worlds these games contain. Using examples from the casual MMO Faunasphere, this paper argues that any such examinaton must start with the particular game’s fiction and rule systems. http://gamestudies.org/1101/articles/begy_consalvo *-----------* The Achievement Machine: Understanding Xbox 360 Achievements in Gaming Practices by Mikael Jakobsson Xbox 360 achievements are explored through casuals, hunters and completists. The dichotomy between MMOs and console games is questioned by framing Xbox Live as a MMO. The ambiguity towards achievements is seen as a result of deeply rooted ideas of what games should be; while at the same time appealing to some of games' most fundamental pleasures. http://gamestudies.org/1101/articles/jakobsson *-----------* Unlocking the Gameworld: The Rewards of Space and Time in Videogames by Alison Gazzard By exploring ideas surrounding exploration, obstacles and avatar death, this article seeks to understand the various ways in which both space and time create reward systems in the gameworld. New categories of rewards are defined in relation to how goals may be constructed within different genres of videogames. http://gamestudies.org/1101/articles/gazzard_alison *-----------* Player Dossiers: Analyzing Gameplay Data as a Reward by Ben Medler This article presents a framework for understanding player dossiers, data-driven visual reports comprised of a player’s gameplay data. The framework describes how dossier systems validate player motivations and contextualize recorded gameplay allowing players to analyze or share the resulting data. http://gamestudies.org/1101/articles/medler *-----------* Balancing Risk and Reward to Develop an Optimal Hot-Hand Game by Paul Williams, Keith V. Nesbitt, Ami Eidels, David Elliott This paper outlines the development of a top-down shooter designed to investigate the psychological phenomenon known as the ‘hot hand’. Such a game requires a well-balanced risk and reward structure. We chronicle the iterative tuning process, focusing on quantitative analysis of how players adapt their risk taking under varying reward structures. http://gamestudies.org/1101/articles/williams_nesbitt_eidels_elliott *-----------* Brutally Unfair Tactics Totally OK Now: On Self-Effacing Games and Unachievements by Douglas Wilson This article presents a case study of designing an intentionally “broken” console party game. Using Henning Eichberg’s concept of the “impossible game” and Bernie DeKoven’s notion of the “Well-Played game,” the article argues that “self-effacing” games of a certain type can help nurture a distinctly self-motivated and collaborative form of play. http://gamestudies.org/1101/articles/wilson *-----------*

CFP of Social Networking and Communities minitrack at HICSS-45
by Karine Nahon 08 Mar '11

08 Mar '11

Hello everyone, The Social Networking and Communities minitrack at HICSS has been part of HICSS since 2003, and over the years has gained a lot of visibility and esteem from the academic and professional community. At HICSS 45 in January 2011, this minitrack was the biggest one of the conference, spanning a day and a half (6 total sessions), with a full audience throughout. We hope to maintain that momentum and make this another great year! Please consider submitting a paper to the minitrack. More Information and papers presented in previous years may be found at: http://ekarine.org/news/hicsscommunities/ Due date is June 15, 2011 (please note, this is a hard deadline set by HICSS, not the minitrack organizers). Karine Nahon and Caroline Haythorntwaite ----------- HICSS 44 HAWAII INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SYSTEM SCIENCES, http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/, January 4-7, 2012 Minitrack: Social Networking and Community Papers due JUNE 15, 2011. Minitrack Organizers: . Karine Nahon, University of Washington, karineb(a)uw.edu hrosenba(a)indiana.edu . Caroline Haythornthwaite, University of British Columbia This minitrack focuses on social networks and their interrelations with communities in the context work, learning, social and/or personal life. At present, there is tremendous research interest in these topics, driven by the fact that these sociological phenomena are changing the way people work, play and socialize, and how they spend their time and money. Accordingly, billions of dollars are being spent by businesses and consumers on these technologies, and the rate of adoption has been phenomenal, while empirical and theoretical work on social and technical design, and economic and social outcomes lag behind. We would like to attract papers that address issues of online communities of practice, inquiry and interest created in the interest of political, educational, business, social and/or gaming pursuits, and with attention to how online community building and management contribute to success in the digital economy and society. While the focus is primarily online communities, papers are also welcomed that address the interplay between online and offline means of interaction. We call for empirical and theoretical papers that add to our understanding of the social, political, and economic landscape of communities and social networks at work, school, home, and play. Examples of the possible interdisciplinary topics of interest in these contexts include, but are not limited to the following: . Social, political and/or economic impact of social media . Communities as sociological phenomenon in the digital economy . Community development and community informatics . Design, development, and user studies of social media . Online communities of practice, inquiry or interest . Business models of Second Life . E-learning: structures, implementations, and practices . Serious leisure communities online . Organizational behavior of communities . Social network studies and analyses of online communities . Mobile applications, services and use for and by online communities . Case studies and topologies of online communities . Case studies and analyses of the rise and fall of social network sites and online communities . Theoretical models of virtual worlds . Advertising in online communities and social networks . Models for managing behavior in online communities . Behavior in online gaming communities . Models and cases of synergies and/or conflicts between real and virtual worlds . Diffusion and adoption of social networking applications and practices . Development of social networking applications and practices . Critical perspectives on social media and local and/or virtual community . Disruptive strategies of virtual worlds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr. Karine Nahon - http://eKarine.org Associate Professor The Information School, The retroV (Virality of Information) Group - http://retroV.org University of Washington Twitter - http://twitter.com/karineb Office tel. - (206) 685-6668

Cyber Crime
by Bella Minw 07 Mar '11

07 Mar '11

I am writing a book chapter on Cyber crime in Africa focusing on four countries - Egypt, Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria. The focus is on various cybercrimes and activities relating to Africa, various means by which individual and corporate African organizations protect themselves from various crimes that have been perpetrated through the internet, African legislative regulations with the aim of determining their effectiveness in curbing cybercrimes over the years, definition of privacy in Africa and how various government interventions have violated the issue of personal and corporate privacy in Africa, just to mention a few. Any suggestion will be appreciated. ~Bella Ezumah, PhD

Spam and Twitterology
by Barry Wellman 07 Mar '11

07 Mar '11

2 ways in which Spam can affect your Twitterology 1. Looking at an ego-centered personal community of tweeps when a large chunk of them are spammers will affect the size and network structure of your findings. 2. Looking at the geographical spread of tweeps (a whole network analysis), when a large chunk of spammers .... Of course, YMMV Barry Wellman _______________________________________________________________________ S.D.
