Mobile Family Interaction: How to use mobile technology to bring trust, safety and wellbeing into families Workshop organized in Mobile CHI 2011 30.8.-2.9. @ Stockholm, Sweden. This workshop aims to deepen our understanding of mobile technology use by preteens. The ubiquitous nature of this technology opens up new possibilities for technology use and abuse that need to be considered by parents and governments. This ongoing technological change will also affect family interaction and parenthood, bringing up new uses for mobile technology throughout families. In this workshop, we welcome multiple approaches to start to explore this domain. We particularly welcome contributions from the following approaches: * Empirical studies of preteen use of mobile technology, including use for communication among friends and family. Empirical analysis of themes, opportunities, coping strategies and mediation is also welcomed. * Case studies of campaigns and other efforts to improve media literacy skills, and child-child and child-adult mediation, with particular emphasis on the development of best practices, as well as theoretical work on topics such as child-child or child-adult mediation. * Presentations of innovative solutions and concepts that improve family life and child empowerment. The solutions will likely include mobile aspects, but may include also other media sources, such as the Web. This is a cross-disciplinary workshop, and we explicitly invite contributions from a range of disciplines, including anthropology and ethnography, sociology, education, design studies, social sciences, science and technology studies and computer science. We also welcome contributions from non-academic organizations, such as corporations and both governmental and non-governmental organizations. *** Important dates: Deadline for submissions 8.4.2011 Information of acceptance: 15.5.2011 Workshop: 29.8.2011 For more information, please visit http://familyinteraction.wordpress.com/

twitter useless to study?
by Barry Wellman 07 Mar '11

07 Mar '11

As an object of study, its hard to do quant analysis of Twitter now because so much of it is spam (unless you're studying spam, that is). And even qualitative analyses will have to be careful. Our 2 Twitterology papers got into the sweet spot when Twitter was an appreciable size but before spam dominated (about 80% of my new would-be Followers) OTOH, I find Twitter useful for research leads -- such as the Atlantic article a tweep broadcast today about how the Internet almost fractured -- or Zeynep et al's (@techsoc) discussion of social media and MENA revolutions. No more thank you's !
by Sue Thomas 07 Mar '11

07 Mar '11

A colleague has emailed to object to the stream of thank you's from me. The reason I'm sending them is that although I asked people to reply to me backchannel, lots of you replied to the list, which made me assume you wanted the conversation to be public. But I agree that, due to the high number of responses my thanks are getting very spammy, so please note that from now on I will only reply to you back-channel. CFP: Workshop on Interdependent Networks at the 22nd ACM Hypertext 2011
by Claudia Muller-Birn 07 Mar '11

07 Mar '11

* Apologies for cross-posting * ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ CFP: Workshop on Interdependent Networks: Quality, Influence and Evolution in Social and Information Networks (WIN2011) at the 22nd ACM Hypertext 2011 which will be held in Eindhoven, NL on June 6-9 2011. Website: https://sites.google.com/site/ht2011win/ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The emergence of new social technologies has not only changed our everyday life but also has led to new forms of collective information goods such as media collections, commentary and software. Innovative online production systems have been designed for people to share their ideas, their experiences and their knowledge enabling the collaborative production of such information goods. The nature of these collective information goods produced using online production systems ranges from pooled information (e.g., Flickr, del.icio.us, Slashdot) to structured information (e.g., Wikipedia, Factual.com) and tightly coupled information (e.g., open source software). This spectrum describes both the coupling of the components of an information good as well as to what extent certain coordination, communication and collaboration processes between participants were required to develop this good. Concretely, these information goods consist of a social dimension which comprises links between people based on their interactions and the information dimension which are links based on syntactic, semantic or logical relations within these goods. Thus, to effectively understand collective information goods, one must take a multi-dimensional approach that addresses the interdependence between social relationships and the networked information that those relationships produce. Only recently have researchers begun to study the collective information goods using multi-dimensional approaches. This workshop aims to bring together experts in network analysis, information networks, semantics and social media to further the development and exchange of knowledge around computational network analysis methods for multi-dimensional networks. We are particularly interested in work that convers the following three areas: * Quality - how do we measure quality of a collective information good using network analysis? What is the relationship between quality information and reputation? How do online production systems cater for quality? * Influence - how do we measure the influence of information networks on social networks and vice versa? Are types of networks more influential than others? * Evolution - how do information and social networks co-evolve? What techniques can be used for measuring and describing evolution? +++Topics include+++ * Models of influence in social media including Twitter, Facebook and others * Measures and techniques for assessing quality in online production systems such as reputation systems in Wikipedia * Measures and techniques for assessing influence in online production systems * Empirical studies of influence, quality and evolution in social media * Approaches towards influencing users and quality in online production systems * (Co-)evolution of social and information networks * Network visualizations of quality, influence and evolution +++Important Dates+++ April 1, 2011: Submission Date April 29, 2011: Notification Date May 10, 2011: Early conference registration deadline June 6, 2011: Workshop Date +++Contributions+++ We invite paper submissions consisting of original, unpublished research that is not under review by another conference, journal, or workshop. Dear all I'm having trouble ploughing through the huge mass of info you've given me, and I'm very conscious that many people want to share it. It will take me ages to organise it into a coherent public list so for the moment I've blogged the question and invited others to contribute. I'd be delighted if you'd circulate this to offlist colleagues and invite them to add to it too. Don't want to lose all this knowledge. Famous internet people *not* from North America http://bit.ly/hp2Puz Btw if anyone wants to take up the baton and produce a better resource, feel free and just let me know so I can link to it J Thanks sue _________________ Professor Sue Thomas Faculty of Humanities/Institute of Creative Technologies Clephan 1.01d De Montfort University The Gateway Leicester LE1 9BH, UK e: sue.thomas(a)dmu.ac.uk t: @suethomas w: Nature and Cyberspace: stories, memes and metaphors http://www.thewildsurmise.com <http://www.thewildsurmise.com/>

Hi Sue, a few Israeli net celebs come to mind: Yossi Vardi is kind of our Bill Gates, father of many startups, but the most famous of them is his son's startup, Mirabillis (ICQ). Not many ppl know today that instant messaging was invented by a few Israeli boys and then sold to AOL. they're still a myth here. Ehud Tenenbaum is our Kevin Mittnick, the hacker nicknamed the Analyzer who broke into the Pentagon, NASA computers and many more, last decade. I think he works for the people he breached now after serving his sentence: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ehud_Tenenbaum Kutiman is a local musician and artist that became world famous for his YouTube mixing project: http://thru-you.com/#/intro/, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kutiman I dunno if meme stars count as famous internet people, but we have Tasha and Adi who started the "hey" lip-sync meme in 2005: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_CSo1gOd48 and if memes count you'll find many meme stars outside North America. "Juan Mann" from the free hugs campaign of 2006 is Australian, for instance. Good Luck! Carmel Vaisman http://www.absolutecarmel.com Twitter @carmelva

famous unAmericans

I can think of several famous Canadians, such as David Lyon (Queens) and Steve Mann (Toronto) A few have even heard of me. In Italy: Leopoldina Fortunati (Udine) In Israel: Gustavo Mesch, Sheizaf Rafaeli, Ilan Talmud - all at Haifa (hope this isn't a British server, or else it may boycott) In Japan, Kakuko Miyata In UK: Bill Dutton (American until 10 years ago), Bernie Hogan -- both at OII (but Bernie is a Canadian -- or even better, a Newfie) And then there is the special case of Manuel Castells, Spanish raised, became famous in France, became internet involved in US, and now cycles between US and Catalonia Apologies, if I have forgotten some of my best friends' names. Call for papers: HICSS minitrack on Open Movements
by Kevin Crowston 06 Mar '11

06 Mar '11

Call for Papers HICSS-45 Minitrack on OPEN MOVEMENTS: FLOSS, OPEN CONTENTS, OPEN ACCESS AND OPEN COMMUNITIES Conference Site: Grand Wailea Maui Dates: January 4-7, 2012 (Wednesday-Saturday) HICSS conferences are devoted to the most relevant advances in the information, computer and system sciences and encompass developments in both theory and practice. Accepted papers may be theoretical, conceptual, tutorial or descriptive in nature. Those selected for presentation will be included in the Conference Proceedings published by the IEEE Computer Society. Additional detail about the conference may be found on the HICSS primary web site: http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu MINITRACK DESCRIPTION This mini-track covers all aspects of the Open Movement phenomena, such as Free, Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS), Open Contents (OC), Open Access Publishing (OA) and Open Communities (OComm, each with distinctive features and issues: o FLOSS is a broad term proposed for naming software released under some kind of free or open source software license. Currently, development and adoption of FLOSS projects spans a wide range of applications and critical infrastructure. o Open Content refers to published content (e.g., articles, engineering designs, pictures or any other type of multimedia) released under some form of open license, allowing the content to be modified and redistributed. Examples of Open Contents are Wikipedia and MIT’s Open Courseware. These principles have also been extended to fields such as scientific collaboratories. o Open Access Publishing means publishing of works in a way that allows access to interested users without financial or other barriers. Examples include a variety of Open Access journals as well as a variety of institutional or topical paper repositories. o Around all types of projects we often find an active and even devoted community of developers, users, leaders, authors and readers, exhibiting complex interactions with each other. Some of the aforementioned projects comprise both types of Open Communities (developing FLOSS and also open content, e.g., Wikipedia and Creative Commons). We also find other Open Communities of users in successful large projects, supporting interactions among users and also with open multimedia contents provided by users themselves, e.g., YouTube, MySpace, del.icio.us, Diggit, Twitter and Facebook. Researchers from a variety of disciplines have turned their attention to the phenomenon of FLOSS, Open Content, Open Access Publishing and Open Communities, frequently presenting them as an intriguing new form of Internet-supported work and collaboration. However, open collaboration and peer production create new challenges, as team members typically work in a distributed environment, in which contributors can come from many independent organizations, many working as volunteers rather than employees. The empirical literature on software engineering, programmers and the social and technical aspects of software development suggests that such teams would face insurmountable difficulties in developing quality code or coherent information collections, yet in fact some of these teams have been remarkably successful. Study of these open projects may thus provide guidance for improving the performance of these teams and of distributed collaborations more generally. As well, open development is an important phenomenon deserving of study in its own right. Millions of users depend on systems such as Linux and the Internet relies extensively on FLOSS tools, Furthermore, there exists a clear trend in Public Administrations all over the world (with some remarkable cases like Australia, The Netherlands and Spain) towards the promotion and widespread adoption of FLOSS technologies. But many FLOSS projects fail to take off, suggesting that the necessary success factors are still not well understood. Wikipedia has quickly become an extensive and widely-used if sometimes controversial resource. Some studies suggest that, despite the apparent heterogeneity of the group of authors behind Wikipedia, the accuracy of some of its articles could rival with other traditional encyclopedic projects like Encyclopedia Britannica. However, we lack a deep understanding of the conditions of its production that lead to such outcomes. This mini-track will provide a place for research and conceptual work to address a variety of questions, such as examining the implications of open content from technical, economic and policy perspectives. As well, the mini-track welcomes studies of the deployment of FLOSS and OC studies, exploring the motivations of individuals to contribute to projects. Studies of the structure and function of open teams and communities are also in the scope of this mini-track, including analysis of the social networks created by those communities and their evolution over time. In addition to studies of specific communities, we seek papers that draw connections across different settings to pose more general questions and explanations or to explore the design and analysis of novel systems. Possible topics for this mini-track include (but are not limited to): o Ideologies behind and motivations for participation in open projects o Member satisfaction and effectiveness in open projects o Creators' roles in open projects and their evolution over time o Leadership, management and policies in open projects o Distributed project, team and group development and management for open projects o Distributed collaboration in and coordination of open projects o User involvement and user support in open projects o Knowledge management and learning in open projects o Issues in distributed software development for FLOSS o Issues in content development in open content and open communities o Open projects as Communities of Practice and problems implementing open practices o Social networks of open projects o Economics of open projects o Community development and its evolution in Open Communities o Information quality and credibility of open content o Applications, adoption and Implementation of open project products o Systems supporting open projects (e.g., FLOSS "forges", wiki platforms) and their impact on project success o Forecasting the evolution of open movements o New application areas in FLOSS o Evaluation, comparison, unification and differentiation of technical aspects of open projects o Methods for simplifying development, maintenance and multi-platform portability in FLOSS o Applications of open source software in education, government and other domains HOW TO SUBMIT To submit a paper, follow the author Instructions posted on the conference web site: http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_45/apahome45.htm o HICSS papers must contain original material. They may not have been previously published, nor currently submitted elsewhere. o All papers will be submitted in IEEE double column publication format. o Submissions are limited to 10 pages including diagrams and references. o All submissions undergo a double-blind peer review process. Therefore, author name(s) are not to be included on the manuscript during the June 15 submission process. o Abstracts are optional, but strongly recommended. You may contact the Minitrack Chair(s) for guidance or verification of content. o Submit a paper to only one Minitrack. If a paper is submitted to more than one minitrack either paper may be rejected by either minitrack without consultation with author. If you are not sure of the appropriate Minitrack, submit an abstract to the Track Chair(s) for determination and/or seek opinion(s) of Minitrack Chair(s) before submitting. o An individual may be listed as author/co-author on no more than 5 submitted papers. Track Chairs must approve any names added after submission or acceptance. IMPORTANT DATES [Optional] From now until June 1: Prepare abstracts and contact minitrack chairs for guidance and indication of appropriate content. 15 June 2011: Authors submit full papers by this date. 15 August 2011: Acceptance notices are sent to authors.
