At the forthcoming OII-ICS Internet in the Past Decade conference this Sept in Oxford, there will be a theatre piece. I'm the Emcee but not the performer. Bev Wellman and I did dance a paper presention many years ago #knees creaked less And about a decade ago, SOcial Network conference was in NOLA right afte Mardi Gras which I attended -- and got lotsa beads -- which I threw out into the audience during my keynote address. My little piece for the Handbook
by Barry Wellman 09 Mar '11

09 Mar '11

Is on my website now in really ugly HTML and PDFing of a doc. "Studying Internet Studies Through the Ages". You're welcome to download. And when the pretty printed version arrives at my door, we will scan and post to the extent feasible. (Ain't gonna rip the book up.) I caution that my piece is dated November 2008. The book was supposed to be out in 2009, but no fault of the editors, it had some troubles and got delayed. My huge thanks to Mia and Charles who have perservered. Looking forward to more discussion on this list of actual research that people are doing . One good start would be to post at the end of your post your most recent article and ongoing project. OK, I'll start: Mostly hibernating finishing Networked, with wonderful coauthor Lee Rainie. Leading NAVEL project of interdisciplinary transcontinental scholarly teams across Canada. First ppt just presneted, but need cleaning. Leasing "Closenss is a Many Splendored Thing" - on varieties of social closenss. Ibid re ppt. And so it goes... spammers & tweeters (2)
by Barry Wellman 09 Mar '11

09 Mar '11

Here's a problem with spammers on tweeters. Suppose you're doing a diffusion of info study, and you want to track RTs and even the memes over a network chain. Trouble is, some worthy folks (like someone who begins with @z) just let all Followers in, even though I betcha most are now spammers who never check Your posts (Narcissim, thy name is Twitter Spammers). So any chain of communication is going to end with them as black holes, and we're going to get quant underestimates of the extent to which memes propogate on Twitter. Re: [Air-L] book announcement
by Jeneen Naji 09 Mar '11

Well actually this pricing reminds me of the costing of a book from lambert academic publishing, a german publisher, who has of late sending out alot of e-mails to post grad students and academics. With Lambert the book appears on Amazon but as it is only printed when someone orders the book the price is incredibly high. Authors get very small royalty fee for each book sold but seeing as the price is so high this is unlikely as most will not buy the book. But I noted this book we are discussing is from Wiley and Blackwell, publishers we know well. Perhaps have they switched their business model to one such as this? It is the only explanation I can come to for such a high price. - Jeneen Naji -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [Air-L] book announcementDate: Tue, 08 Mar 2011 15:40:37 -0500From: Nathaniel Poor <natpoor(a)gmail.com>To: Charles Ess <charles.ess(a)gmail.com>CC: Air list <air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org> Charles- The Amazon link you sent lists the book at $US 200 (well ok $199.95 and then a discount, but $200). Is that accurate? I know that's the hardcover, but if that's the price how is anyone going to buy it? Even the Kindle edition is $150. -Nat.

the history of connecting to the Internet
by Sandra Braman 08 Mar '11

08 Mar '11

Norway and the UK were connected to what was then called ARPANet in 1973. (The name Internet came into use just a year or so later.) Norway was the first, and the UK was linked a few minutes later. Canadians were involved in design discussions as early as 1971, but the first functional linkages were these with Norway and the UK. Importantly, it was the Canadians who, in 1971, insisted that designers incorporate the need to design a network that could connect all users across vast geographic spaces into their governing design principles. (I'm just completing work on an analysis of the internationalization of the Internet during the first decade of the design process, 1969-1979, based on study of the technical document series recording the history of that design process, the Internet Requests for Comments, or RFCs. My Telecommunications Policy Research Conference paper of last October ["The Framing Years"] presented an analysis of the policy frames that developed during the Internet design process during that decade. Other related work is underway. An overview of this very large project was published in INFORMATION, COMMUNICATION, & SOCIETY in 2010 -- "The Interpenetration of Technical and Legal Decision-Making for the Internet.") Oh Canada!
by Barry Wellman 08 Mar '11

I believe that Canada was connected to the then-American Internet before Norway and UK. Sorry, can't document, but as always bear embraced us (and vice-versa), and Sue Thomas and John-Willy Bakke overlooked us. Feeling neglected is so Canadian. :) Barry Wellman _______________________________________________________________________ S.D. Call for Chapters Web Search Engine Research Publisher: Emerald Library and Information Science Book Series http://www.emeraldinsight.com/products/books/series.htm?id=1876-0562 Book Editor: Dirk Lewandowski, Professor in Information Science, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Germany) Proposal Submission Deadline: 31 March 2011, accepted Full Chapters Due: 15 June 2011 Introduction Since the advent of Web search engines in the 1990s, research has been conducted on their use and their quality in both computer science and in library and information science. While research in computer science mainly focuses on technical aspects of search engines, the focus of information science research is on users? behaviour when using search engines and how their interactions can be evaluated. Furthermore, information science research takes into account search engines? impact on society. However, it does not solely take the perspective of search engines as ?new media?, but can take a unique perspective integrating technical aspects, user aspects and their impact on their role in knowledge acquisition. The book therefore will follow a wide approach, and the editor is seeking contributions from a variety of research areas. Specific topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: * Retrieval effectiveness * User satisfaction * Evaluation of search engine interfaces * Search engines? index quality * The impact of search on society * Reliability of search results * Query log analysis * User guidance in the search process * Index and/or results freshness, diversity of results * Influence of search engine optimization (SEO) on results quality. Submission Information Potential contributors are invited to submit a chapter proposal (approx. 500 words) to the Book Editor by 15 March 2011, detailing the background, motivations and structure of the proposed chapter. Authors will be notified in short order as to the status of their proposal and sent organizational guidelines.
